Our experience was very unfavorable. We were the only two in the restaurant, the waiter was clueless. Both our lunches were wrong, not what we ordered. They tried making it right, but what was brought was soggy, wet and bland, no flavor at all. We paid but left the food. We will not go back. Tex Mex it is not! read more

A couple of things. I ordered, for takeout, a taco salad with chicken in it. It was a Friday evening (July 2025 to be exact). I called ahead. The shredded chicken -- ew -- which was EXTREMELY DRY, and the flavorless shredded cheese (shredded chicken???), were on the BOTTOM of the salad. The overly abundant shredded lettuce, the very minimal guac and sour cream, along with the pieces of colored corn strips (WHY were those there if the salad is in an edible shell???), were on top, which was bizarre. The taco shell tasted like it had been fried a day or TWO before. Stale. No crunch. Not crispy. It was heavy, dull, and tasted old. No dressing or salsa comes with this disaster. If I didn't have salsa verde at home, this would have been MORE of a tragedy. Who wants a dry, old-tasting "salad" without an appropriate dressing? $12.99 for this? Nope. Not even close to worth it. You guys want to know how to make an incredible taco salad? Go learn from Tacos el Rancho in Orlando. I've NEVER had a bad one from there. What a shame my first -- and LAST -- from your establishment was so depressingly bad. Is it because expectations in Youngstown are so much lower when it comes to TexMex? I guess Florida and Texas have higher standards and expectations. Calling the order in was ridiculous. I'd expect the English-as-a-second language problem in Florida, not Youngstown. But making myself understood, and trying to cut through the accents of staff, was unacceptable. Is the hispanic population here that large? Is the customer base of that demographic? WHY would this place make communicating so challenging? If not, which I suspect is the case, cater to your paying audience. If I have to work that hard to make myself understood by your staff, I'll go elsewhere. These guys can't get a taco salad right. I am an accomplished home cook. I can make my own TexMex. I can make my own taco salad better than the awful mess I got from this place. It's nice, though, to have a tasty go-to when I don't have the time and energy. El Cowboy is definitely NOT that go-to. This was our first time here, and we'll definitely be coming back. Don't let the location in the Wedgewood Plaza put you off, the interior is nice and the food is outstanding! We had a party of four, and our server Vialetta brought out separate bowls of chips and salsa. for the Men and the Ladies in our group. Smart move! The chips are freshly made on-site each day, and the salsa was excellent. Interestingly, the chips and salsa also came with a small bowl of coleslaw, which was delicious. For dinner, I ordered a three enchilada platter (one beef, one chicken, and one cheese). They were prepared very well, and came with rice and beans. My wife had the Taco salad bowl, and she loved it, especially the fresh guacamole. My friend ordered a Burrito plate and was very satisfied. Let's give it a four out of five just because I love me some tacos! And the chips are great. The salsa is chunky, not a smoothie like at the two El Gallo's. And that freaking slaw salsa! Yow! So darn great! Tuesday so getting a side of guacamole and four steak street tacos. Of course wifey wife has to get cheese and lettuce on hers. (Hmmm I wonder about wifey wife at times) I however got me two soft corn tortillas and onion lime wedges and cilantro (you know, the GOOD way) with steak (carne asada) and if it is as good as I am expecting I will be as happy as I believe I will be as I believe I will be when I get the food I believe will be as good as I believe it will be. You wouldn't think so from the outside, but El Cowboy is really nice: huge portions, good quality, & a nice interior. I also like that you can get black beans instead of refried beans! I've never seen that anywhere else before. In fact, I'll go on record for saying that El-Cowboy is likely tired for being being my favorite Hispanic joint in the area - tied with Mission Taco. I do have one complaint with the patio area. There isn't much to look at outside, but it's a nice option when the weather cooperates. However, the BIG PROBLEM is that they let people smoke on the patio, beyond that they outright encourage it by putting ash trays on the tables. Not only is this annoying & uncomfortable for non-smokers, but frankly it's illegal according to State Law. I believe the law dictates that you cannot smoke within 30 feet of a door. They need to get their act straight, moreover, I've considered turning them in on multiple occasions. read more

The Food is absolutely amazing!!!! However the service is something to be desired.... To start off with the young waitress argued with my wife over what she ordered ( chicken quesadilla with the fajita chicken instead of the shredded chicken it comes with) and tried saying she ordered a fajita. At this point a what I'm assuming was the manager comes over ends up fixing the issue at hand and explains the girl is brand new, but in a not so nice way. Final straw was we get our check and we were charged for four drinks (free refills on fountain drinks) we only ordered two drinks with two refills... I ask the young lady about it she says she's new here but it's per drink, I ask her to find out for sure because I've been here countless times and never been charged for a refill, she still charged my card for 4 drinks instead of two then offered a $5 gift certificate. And as we're walking out yells across the restaurant have a great day with a super smug smirk on her face. The food can be good all day long but when you have crappy customer service it just makes it a bad experience all the way around. You would think an economy like we're in now they would try to keep that business in house Instead of running them out. I don't know how others had such a poor experience. The food was off the charts and the margaritas were amazing. We've had Mexican food literally all over the world, so I'm at a loss as to how this place has relatively low scores. Between the two if us, we tried the following tacos: barbacoa, grilled chicken, shrimp, carne asada, carnitas, and al pastor. Each were prepared in a manner that supported the protein perfectly. You could get hard shell or soft. The margaritas were huge. The chips were light and crisp, and served with a cabbage slaw or a wonderfully flavorful salsa. This was an absolute awful experience, the manager Amanda was absolutely terrible, rude and not professional at all! She actually told one of the people in our party that "she should learn to read the menu" and thew the dish on the table. If that's what Managment is like at this place we will not be back. They also screwed up the entire order! I would hope the owner would want a better experience for their customers. That manager should be fired for the way she was treating everyone. Ate here for the first time after hearing about it several times. The salsa was really good. We got a side of guacamole, it was good. But our dinners were not good. I did the carnitas, huge plate of food. But unfortunately I left 80% of it as it just sucked. Everything sucked. The rice was so so. The beans weren't good and the carnitas was just odd tasting and not good. I was still hungry and left so much food just because it wasn't good. My wife got a chicken quesadilla, she ate it. Said it was ok. Nothing special. The bill was over $45 and I'm going to need to eat something in the hour or two. Very disappointing. Maybe it was an off night or something. We decided to check this place out on a Saturday night. When we walked in the door we were pleasantly greeted by the girl who ended up being our waitress. She was also waiting on tables on the other side of the restaurant so she kept up pretty good considering she was running back and forth. We weren't big fans of the margarita on the rocks that we ordered. So we switched to beer. The carne asada was delicious. The beans and rice were awesome. I didn't try the burrito but dh said it was delicious and tried to eat it all. (Like John candy from the great outdoors) but he failed leaving a few bites on his plate. The portion was pretty large and I didn't have a single bite left. I didn't fill up on the chips because they had quite a few hard nacho cluster (you know when the nachos get stuck together and you can't even bite into them) so I only had a few nachos with awesome coleslaw that they bring out to dip in. The salsa they bring out was just ok. I wouldn't say it was my favorite. We bought a few my valley dining coupons which saved us 10 bucks is why we came back and give this place another try. Happy hour margarita prices went until 6, we were in the building before 6, but when we ordered the margarita at 6:02 the waitress refused to give it to us. My father loved his food but got sick in the night after. My biggest complaint is I wanted the $4 ala carte burrito because it was cheap and I wasn't tht hungry. The waitress asked if I wanted the red sauce, I said no, she asked if I want the queso, I said sure. When we got the bill, they charged us $4 (the same price as the burrito) for queso. She said it was $4 for a side of queso but I didn't get a side of queso, all they did was drizzle a little bit on the top of my burrito. She should have told me while I was ordering that my $4 burrito was going to cost double for alittle white sauce. My family have been enjoying this restaurant since it opened. Tonight will be the last time. The food was good but the service was horrible. Baskets of chips were bottom the bag crumbs. I understand if they are busy but it wasn't that bad. Ask for chips- they never came. Asked for drink- she forgot. Asked for carry out- took her three tries to get it out to us. My fries didn't come out with my meal the waiter said he'd go get them but they came after i finished the rest of my food. I thought it was all very over priced as well. Took forever for us to have our order taken and for drinks to be refilled. Miscommunication led to having two waitresses and still waiting 45 minutes for our food to come out. 2 out of the 3 meals we ordered were wrong and the questions we asked about how things were plated and what sides we could receive were incorrect. After all of this they could not comp our meals or even just the steak that was ordered and specifically said to be medium rare and not well done. Horrible service. Good potential for food.
