Hidden off the highway one block, by the surf store. Excellent Mexican food with a focus on seafood. But definitely don't stop just at the ceviche shrimp tower, read the back page! Started with the salsa and beans. Medium hot, and the beans were flavorful. Not too salty. I had the birria, which was remarkable. Less consume and more intense flavors than some styles. Also had the carne asada sope, a little art project as well. The meats were a touch salty, and the asada not quite seared. The shrimp tower was great, firm clean taste on the shrimp and the tomatoes were surprisingly fresh and tasty. There were 3 sauces including one that was very hot. Takeaways- great service and a fast kitchen. The right level of staff attention. The ambiance is straight strip mall, so no surprise there. Take your time on the menu. Probably 3-4 visits to really get the whole span. Portions were huge, 1 sope could be a meal. You could have split these 2 mains and a side for 3 hungry people. This place is a strong 4. The waitress was solo but she did a great job. Salsa was good and there was a warm bean dip served with the chips that is worth trying to copy. I had the chile verse and it was delicious as were the beans and rice. Coffee was good and the aquas Fresca watermelon flavor was not to be missed. I wish this didn't happen because I genuinely like El Cora. Last week, I placed an order over the phone while sitting alone in my truck. The server read the order back to me. When my girlfriend and I got home, nearly half our order was missing. I called back to notify the staff and they graciously offered to fix the mistake. The server also apologized and told me their staff "was a bit off" that night. Today, I redeemed the offer. While the restaurant did comp the missing food (plus some sides, to be fair), the server implied that the error was my fault ("very drunk party") and that I was lying about placing the order myself. I'm sober and I'm honestly insulted by the situation. I am a local resident and I order $60-$80 meals from El Cora at least twice per month. I really wish this wasn't my interaction, but it's unacceptable for restaurant staff to make incorrect accusations to a regular customer. Mistakes happen, but I've worked in service and this is not how mistakes are handled. As with some previous reviews the decor was eye catching and were promptly greeted and sat ourselves. Beer selection was decent but we always as if possible the coldest beer from the back of the fridge. It appears that they must have stocked recently cause they were cool at best. Menu needs to be done in larger format as most items on the back page are crammed together. We were up for a quick bit so a couple of super burritos were ordered.....here is where things turned down. These burritos were mostly RICE! I opened the whole thing up and litter can say only a couple of spoonfuls was meat all Rice which was sort of dry. The chips and the small bean dip and salsa was the only plus. Also the "no tip to be added to the credit card" is strange been to so many places and this is a first limited on cash so a minimal tip was left to the staff/them. read more

The place it is very pleasant. The servers and food preparers were extremely nice. The beans and rice are tasty. But the red sauce on the enchiladas is lacking in flavor. They do not put much sauce on their food. There needs to be more flavorful dishes (spices/sauces). And the food needs to be more balanced. What I mean by balanced is when you serve enchiladas, whether it has cheese or meat, you should have that in an enchilada, not just a smidgit. And mexican food should always have flavor whether spicy or mild but never bland. I do want to finish this off with saying, the staff was wonderful and the atmosphere was very joyous. read more

I am pleased to tell you this is the best Mexican food that I have found up here... not perfect but their food game was spot on... The servers were attentive and talented . We wanted to love this restaurant so much but our visit was severely lacking. A positive note is that the decor is absolutely eye catching and immediately provided a happy, good-vibe feeling. Someone greeted us and told us to pick a table. When we did, we she promptly brought us our menus and asked us for drinks (amazing service). But that's where the great experience ended as we sat for quite awhile waiting for someone to come back and take our order and bring drinks. Someone brought us our drinks but my husband's horchata was chalky tasting (hadn't been mixed well before being served from the gallon jug they keep on a table). My husband ordered 3 carne asada tacos and I ordered the cheese enchiladas. Someone brought my husband's tacos out but my food took another 5 minutes to come to the table. After I had my food, I waited another several minutes to start eating because there was no silverware on the table and I had to ask for someone to bring silverware. Then a second person tried to bring silverware (lack of communication amongst the staff). His tacos were flavorless and the meat was cold. I've never had such horrible enchiladas. Hailing from San Diego, I feel I have a pulse on good Mexican food. The red sauce was an abnormally bright red and tasted like watered down tomato paste (also completely flavorless). The best part of my dish was the shredded lettuce, tomato, and avocado garnish they put atop the enchiladas. We sat for nearly 15 minutes waiting for someone to collect our plates and finally had to ask for the check. During this time, we watched as another couple arrived and left because no one greeted them, the table behind us sent food back to the kitchen, and another patient couple waited an insanely long time to be greeted and offered menus. The waitress closed out our bill but did so in a way where we were unable to leave a tip (we didn't have cash on hand). I really hope the owner sees this and implements some serious changes because we felt duped based upon previous reviews that we were visiting a great restaurant. Generally, I do not always believe a yelp review and have never posted. El Cora is the exception. We were traveling through Garberville heading north on 101 and very hungry. After checking yelp we decided to try El Cora. The food is 5 star and there is nothing that compares to it in the bay area. The salsa's were delicious as were the entrees. Our favorite was the cervichi and shrimp tostadas. The service was great and even though the restaurant was a little dated, the business is immaculate. The female owner was in the back cooking up her home made salsa and other wonderful smells were coming out of the kitchen. If you have the opportunity to stop here you will not regret it. read more

I had such high hopes for this place since it had some good reviews however, the taquitos that I ordered were made out fried flour tortillas instead of usual corn tortillas. The tortillas were so thick that I had to peel off the tortilla only to find small overly cooked inedible pork carnita meat! The Spanish rice was flavorless. The only saving grace was the refried beans. Left hungry and disappointed! Giving extra stars for the dining room cleanliness and nice serving staff. Tables are nicely spaced. Really excellent food, and highly recommended. Almost skipped it because of the middling Yelp rating, but we ended up coming twice in two days. The menu is an unholy mess and needs a complete reboot, but stick it out and ask if you have questions. You'll see what I mean. Just know that they have all the usual Mexican things. Always great & delicious food! We've been eating here since the food truck was at the old Ed's gas station. Some of the best Mexican food in Humboldt. Haven't had anything on the menu I dislike, even my picky kids enjoy the tacos. Love going here, great addition to our town. read more
