Sadly our Saturday morning (January 17, 2026) breakfast was not as good as our previous meals. My eggs were cooked exactly as I asked. The biscuits and gravy were perfect as well. Server was very polite and helpful. I asked for crispy bacon. It was crispy, all right, like cinders in a fireplace...all the flavor cooked right out of it. Hash browns were also overcooked. In fairness, Anna loved her chicken fried steak and everything about her meal. Coffee was nothing to write home about, and they didn't have heavy whipping cream, but our very sweet server attempted to make up for that by bringing us some whipped cream. It isn't the same, but I appreciate her effort. We will probably be back (maybe not for breakfast) but this motivated us to try other local restaurants, for breakfast and other meals. read more

I ate here twice while visiting the Avenue of the Giants. Breakfast restaurants are few. I had the choice of here, or the chain restaurant next door...I chose the local's spot. Glad I did. It's super cute, love the cows everywhere. It's not very big, so no large parties unless you don't mind being at separate tables. I sat at the counter both times since I was by myself. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The food is good and the prices reasonable. read more

We had breakfast two mornings of our weekend Ave of the Giants motorcycle trip. Always a wonderful experience both food and service. Veggie omelet was very good, as was the huevos rancheros and my wife's poached eggs. Servers are knowledgeable and very nice. Day one the CHP was giving route advice to a group of adventure motorcyclists in the restaurant. Love to see that. This is a gem. Don't miss it. read more

Heading home from the Avenue of the Giants we stopped in for breakfast. a travel back in time to the good old days of great food, atmosphere and friendly /kind staff. We al ordered the country fried steak breakfast. Came with two eggs, and hash browns. Honestly the best hash browns I believe I've ever had. Over easy eggs cooked perfectly, gravy includes small chunks of bacon that was a nice touch. Ice cold milk to boot! read more

We stopped for lunch on our road trip. We prefer small independent restaurants over chains and this place was perfect. I had the chili which was delicious, meaty with beans and a slight kick to it. My husband had a tuna sandwich with the special soup of the day, turkey rice. He loved the soup! We sat at the counter and chatted with the owner's daughter-in-law who was our server. She was so friendly and gave us a quick history of the restaurant after I told her I loved all the cows. Definitely worth a stop! read more

Tuna melt was well cooked, with great bread and nice onions, but the tuna salad itself seemed to pretty much just be tuna with tons of mayo. I'll pass on that next time and try something else. 2019 was my first visit and I still rave about the pancakes whenever someone tells me they're headed that way. Fast forward to this past weekend in 2025, I FINALLY went back and turns out that I did not hype up the pancakes the first time around. They were still perfectly cooked; slightly sweet, perfectly fluffy on the inside, and perfectly brown and slightly crispy on the edges. The hash browns were excellent as well... it was a good thickness and just right with the crispiness. I did add a bit of salt and black pepper, to taste. Great service and still delicious food at a fair price. I got a little nervous but considering the size of the cute little town and the friendly welcome we received I was put to ease! The food was fantastic! I'm so happy we drifted into the Eel River Cafe by happenstance. Our original plans fell thru (hey businesses - make sure your posted Yelp hours are accurate), but no worries because this warm little cafe was there for us in a pinch. Our waitperson was super friendly and assured us we made good choices with our veggie omelettes. She was right! The hash browns and sourdough toast were delicious too. It's a pretty good value too, $13.25 for omelette and two sides. We're from the SF Bay Area, where many places charge $17-$20+ for a meal this hearty. Amazing hot and fresh food! Classic atmosphere. Love the decor. Service was very very good. Love the small town feel. Met my friend for lunch who lives in town. Didn't get a pic of the food but the Grilled chicken Sando special on ciabatta was so juicy and good, the temperature was so nice on the bread. Inside was equally vintage with a formica counter and high-back booths. They mounted lucite dividers between the booths to help us feel safer. I chose the $11.95 Veggie Lover's Omelette with spinach, tomato, mushrooms, onion, and Swiss cheese. 3.5 stars. It's a decent diner. Very cute ambience dedicated to cows and cars. Limited seating in a very small area so they have panels for social distancing. We got here around 9 am on a federal holiday so there was still place to sit. Typical breakfast diner food is served. We ordered the french toast and the fiesta omelet, a hot chocolate and freshly squeezed orange juice. The french toast started just ok but towards the end we liked it, esp with the butter and syrup. The fiesta omelet is basically beef chili with egg, avocado, olives, etc inside the egg with a side of hash and toast. The omelet itself was good but the hashbrown was very tasteless and needed a lot of salt. The orange juice, freshly squeezed, was AMAZING! Def pay the extra $1 and get this. The hot chocolate was on the sweeter side. The meal lasted us a good 4-5 hours in terms of hunger. read more

This restaurant was a wonderful find! Jennifer, our waitress, would have made this our favorite stop of the day even if the food wasn't as delicious as it was. It's a special talent of some waiters and waitresses to make children feel seen and heard in a restaurant. There were seven of us so we ate the whole range of the menu from pancakes to burgers to half salad and soup. We wanted an early start to our drive back so we skipped breakfast in Eureka and stopped in for a meal at Eel River Cafe after seeing so many good reviews. I'm glad we did. This place is small but packed the entire time we were there. It looked like there as an equal number of out of towners and locals. All coexisting peacefully in a great diner with friendly and prompt service. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with a side of curley fries and my husband ordered an omelet with toast. Both of us were very happy with our orders. Great portion sizes and reasonable prices. The decor of this diner is also very cute and charming. Lots of cow pictures and figurines. The food and service are top notch. The portions are well sized and not too large nor meant for a toddler. The place is clean and well run by a staff who obviously care about what they do. We had a large party and all of us were seated and served within 15 to 20 minutes. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and they were cooked perfectly. All in all, I will go other again the next time I am in the area.
