Portion, prices and location is great, but food authenticity is disappointing. I ordered the Comprade Burrito which was massive (I ended up eating half of it for lunch the next day) and we were able to walk to the taqueria from a different event we were at downtown. We got there right before closing so it was pretty quiet so I'm not sure how crowded it gets during normal dinner hours. You order at the register and then seat yourself, so that was all easy and we obviously got seats easily. The waitress was super friendly too! The disappointing piece was the actual food experience. It was exciting to see how big the burrito was, but the taste was very Americanized. I feel like a lot of taquerias in SLO county don't have enough flavor with their food. It makes me not want to eat Mexican food when I'm here and I wait to eat it when I'm in the Bay Area or SoCal.

Mediocre Mexican food. Not fantastic, but not bad. I've tried a few of their burritos and enchiladas. They are stingy on the carne asada. Maybe two bites of actual meat in the burrito. Most of all, I am a huge salsa person, and their salsa just isn't good at all. The hot is bitter and leaves a nasty after taste. But the pico de gallo is okay. You have to try pretty hard to screw pico up, right? read more

I give it an extra star because this is the best Mexican food in Atown. Try the carnitas torta it is excellent. You will not walk away from this place hungry. They have some fresh creative specials too. Breakfast lunch dinner this place does it all, just no table service. read more

If you are traveling and want some good food. Stop here. It was fast, the girl was friendly and the food was delicious. My husband had the burrito vaquero and I had two chicken soft tacos. The best fish & shrimp tacos you will find ANYWHERE! Super-duper fresh & tasty! Friendly hard-working folks. Not a fancy looking place & that's fine because they put all the effort into their wonderful menu. The freshest seafood you will find! Awesome fresh salsa bar. Carnitas, delightful, fresh local halibut tacos, sublime, sopes, a bit doughy but tasty chicken, Chile Colorado, very tender, shrimp tacos, don't taste like frozen shrimp! Just had Luis and his family come and cater our big party (120) and they rocked it. Super easy to deal with, exactly as ordered and the food was incredible. I love this place. One of the only places that I really like to eat at in Atascadero and in my view, one of the best Mexican restaurant in SLO county. The food is always fresh and the service is excellent, even when they're busy. I also would recommend the salsa bar and in particular, the pico de gallo and salsa verde. Like any restaurant, some dishes are better than others, although tastes differ. My personal favorites are the tortas, tostadas, and burritos (carnitas, pastor (when they have it), and asada). In any event, if you haven't been there, it's certainly worth trying! read more

El Compadres has gone from being my go to Mexican food joint to being my all time favorite. Originally when I started going here I loved everything on the menu. Especially their San Dieguito Burritto. ITS HUGE!!!!! And then recently they have started offering free chips and salsa if you eat there and its just become that much better. This was pretty run of the mill Mexican food. I had an order to go (two chicken tacos and the nachos) and my husband had a carne asada taco and nachos. It was pretty bland. Salsa - lots of it, but the hotter salsa just tasted off. The salsa verde was pretty yummy. I hear the tortas are good, so if we ever go back, I'll probably try that. Everyone was very nice, they had a table in front of the cashier for to-go orders to sit. But, it was just too americanized for my liking. read more

For sixteen years our list of signature plates continues to grow. We create all of our recipes in-house, they are original, often asked for and more than often unsuccessfully re-attempted by others! Grilled fish tacos~local halibut prepared with garlic, cajun, or spicy style, cabbage, mango salsa. Baja style halibut tacos with our chipotle cream sauce and Mexican coleslaw are a new favorite. We have perfected our dish of Crab Enchiladas in tomatillo cream sauce you won't find anywhere else. Salads~ the Fiesta has chicken breast marinated in herbs; grilled and placed on a bed of fresh romaine, black beans, avocado, tomatoes and cucumber with a side of our flavorful tostada chips and amazing Citrus Basil dressing. Mexican Chopped Salad has fresh corn, black beans, queso fresco, and tortilla strips perfectly tossed in our Avocado Vinaigrette dressing. Looking for a great burger? After working the restaurant industry for 22 years, opportunity knocked and we purchased "Papi's" from our Compadres. The new name, El Compadre, was a natural fit. I love their big portions and their salsa bar. Customer service has always been friendly, and when I've eaten inside the restaurant, staff has been attentive and helpful. I always loved their small restaurant, but their bigger location makes it a go-to place to enjoy the experience that they create with their love for good Mexican food.

I've been to Garcias several times and this most recent visit was a huge disappointment considering the price of our beef fajita and carnitas burritos. If you're going to charge $15+ per burrito just do it right! If you can't afford to cut out the gristle and fat then charge $20! There is no acceptable reason for serving this disappointment. I usually stop by a few times while I'm in town visiting family for vacation but not this time.

Our tasty ceviche appetizer came with a more-than-generous portion of chips, followed by the best creamy poblano soup I've ever had. My husband's Habana & Shrimp dish was not only flavorful, but incredibly tender as well. He said it was the best meal he's had in quite a while. My Reserva De La Familia salmon plate was fantastic -- it practically melted in my mouth. And the flavorful rice smothered in the sauce was the icing on the cake. Was visiting from Southern California and was told to come here. Was sorry I listened. Not much taste in the Chile Colorado burrito which had so much rice and beans and the tostado was an absolute joke for what they charged. I thought they made a mistake so called them and sure enough that is what they charged 8.50 for...it was a joke!! Only thing good was the salsa bar where you can get as much as you want in bigger size containers and they are pleasant who work there. Won't go back tho because of high cost on portion size and taste. read more
