Yumm! This place is good and cheap. Went here with a friend when I was visiting DC. We had a short wait and then were seated in the 2nd floor garden, which was a great space. I had the blackberry mezcal drink, which was delicious. We split guacamole, which was very fresh and came with salsa, which was also very good. It was a smokey salsa. Which is one of my favorites. We split the tacos carnitas and the tacos al pastor, both very good, but small, so if you're hungry get a few orders others to split. Each taco dish comes with 2 tacos. And we also had he corn on the cob, which was clearly a staple as everyone seem to be eating it. And no wonder there, it was delicious! Grilled corn with cheese and a smoky creamy sauce. It was super fast service. We were in and out in under 45 mins, so if you're looking for so,etching quick (we weren't) this is a good spot. read more

I like these guys. DC's not the best place for simple, reasonably-priced Mexican food, but this fits the bill. The on-tap Margaritas are solid, the tacos are tasty, and the corn is required eating. Great roof deck, too. Go for all-night happy hour on Monday's for absurdly good deals on both the food and drinks, too. read more

You can't miss the sign at this Mexican spot. I came here for "brunch" but since I had been up for several hours I treated this as a lunch. We started with the chicken flautas which were tasty. I really enjoyed my tacos they packed flavor but weren't spicy. To my delight they were served sans globs of sour cream, bland guac and cheese. I liked that these tacos came a la carte instead of with rice and beans which I never enjoy. It's a little less food but the price is a bit less too which I think leads to a better deal for the consumer...rice and beans are pretty cheap. I really enjoyed the low key vibe and the fantastic waiter. He was very nice and had great suggestions. Also for brunch they were fresh squeezing the oranges for my mimosa! I don't live in the area but hopefully I'll come back with some warmer weather for dinner or happy hour. read more

I recently went to El Chucho in Columbia Heights when visiting friends in DC. The wait was crazy long because their food is great and they don't have many tables but they took our number and agreed to call us when our table was ready. We went down the street and got a beer while waiting for our table. After 1.5 hours we got the call that they were ready for us! Our table was on the top floor which was open and patio style seating. I enjoyed a blackberry margarita which was DELICIOUS. For dinner I had the chicken tacos and thought they were decent but definitely not the best I've ever had. I found a chicken bone while biting into my taco, not pleasant. The three stars are for location, service and the drinks. The two star deduction were for the food. read more

El Chucho is really fun. There's a great vibe both inside and also out on the roof patio. The tacos are super tiny so order two or three even if you are actually hungry for a meal. Our waiter was very friendly and understanding that we took his table for many, many hours. He was a little condescending about the types of tequila they have, but not a huge deal. There are not too many tables so there can be a wait. They also won't seat you until everyone (or almost everyone) is there. Go there to drink a lot and then drink some more. read more

El Chucho has a happy hour on Monday when the Chicken and Al Pastor tacos are $3 and the Elote is $2.50. It's a regular spot for my boyfriend and his friends who live in Columbia Heights. I joined them on a rainy night. It was pretty crowded, but we were lucky enough that it wasn't too busy that night since there is nowhere to wait for your table and again... it was raining. The rooftop has such a chill night atmosphere. I was really glad we were seated upstairs. I ordered some Carne Asada tacos and the Elote. The Carne Asada tacos were not that good. I would not recommend at all. I didn't even want to finish it. My boyfriend had an order of the Al Pastor tacos. The sauce made these so much tastier. The elote though... I'll come back just for this and some Tecate and some good times with friends. All else, I wouldn't care for. To sum it up, I wouldn't come back solely for the food, but if my friends were in the area and we needed a place to drink and chat, this would be a neat place to hang out. read more

This place is pretty good - the swirly magarita w/ chile lime salt is excellent! I don't normally like frozen margaritas but the strawberry habenero was what drew me and it didn't disappoint. The corn is delish (per other reviews). The asada tacos - meh - the grilled onion was great and the radishes were a nice addition - but I don't expect ground beef when I order an "asada" taco and I wouldn't order a ground beef taco on purpose. Nothing special about the cemita - a chicken sandwich w/ mole. One yucky note - the ladies' room smells like cat urine. Not sure if others have an opinion on this - maybe it's just that they are using ammonia to clean the bathroom and I'm overly sensitive to it....i'm not sure but it is a little gross. read more

The decor is absolutely amazing. I have yet to be on the roof deck, it was closed due to the weather. The tacos are tiny, you get 2 for an order. If you're starving and want to pig out on tortilla chips, shit tons of rice and beans, and cheap tacos, go to El rinconcito on Park (It is delicious). If you're looking for affordable gourmet Mexican food, with interesting concoctions go here. You might need to order quite a few things to leave full, so it might end up slightly pricier than you thought. The corn is amazing. The drinks are interesting, they might be a bit too interesting, but again do you want a generic margarita the size of your head, or a habanero strawberry margarita? The only thing that's been annoying is that the service is not that great. It seems they're always under staffed. If you're looking for a cheap Mexican feast, washed down with Corona don't go here. If you're looking to try a wide variety of eclectic (pricier) food and cocktails go here. Better yet go when they have their happy hour, you can sample a lot and save some $. PS things tend to be spicy here. read more

DC is in desperate need of good Mexican food and El Chucho is the best I have found! Be warned they have limited seating space and it was packed the rainy Wednesday night I was there, I can only imagine what a sunny weekend evening looks like. They also don't do pitchers of margaritas. These are my only two complaints. The food was excellent, the drinks were great (and we sampled a number of them while we waited), and the servers were polite and courteous despite cramped conditions. I will go back frequently! The menu is also pretty vegetarian friendly I shared with a veggie and non-veggie friend and we were all very happy. read more

Federal snow days in the District essentially mandate going to an early happy hour. My friend and I relished our opportunity to arrive and chose prime seats at the tender hour of 4:30. The happy hour specials here are not to be missed. Well maybe you can miss them. The thing is, the discount for HH isn't SO spectacular that if you miss it you're paying out the nose. The tacos and margaritas are generally affordable already. Once those prices drop though, and you can get 4 (delicious) tacos and 1 (revitalizing) margarita for $10--you should probably do that. All I experienced were the pollo and al pastor tacos, along with their margarita on tap. Why don't more places have margarita on tap? Brilliance. So while I didn't examine the menu to much breadth, I enjoyed my snowy happy hour at El Chucho quite a bit. I look forward to returning. read more

Came here for dinner and drinks at the recommendation of a friend who lived in the neighborhood. Man their margaritas are good! They have a huge tequila tasting menu with decent prices as well as some unique mixed drinks including a spicy frozen margarita. The corn was everything it's cracked up to be. Whatever that cheesy, buttery goodness they put on top is amazing. We almost ordered more! We also tried the flautas which were good, but overshadowed by the corn for sure. I had the steak tacos for dinner and really enjoyed them. I love corn tortillas and was happy to find them here. They also had a lamb taco on special which my boyfriend ordered. He said they were good, but note great. Our friends had the chicken and fish tacos and said both were great. Individual dishes are inexpensive, but they are also small portions. definitely order two items to make a full meal. Narrow restaurant with close tables, so be prepared to know your neighbor! read more

El Chucho is great for happy hour! I specially enjoy going on the rooftop. It's a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The margaritas with chili salt are good. The best thing about El Chucho is their street corn. It's the best one I've found in D.C. so far. I've tried their tacos al pastor, chicken, and beef. I've also tried the huaraches, which are good. Aside from the street corn, the food I've tried at El Chucho is not the best Mexican food I've had in DC. I don't think the quality is worth the regular price, but the happy hour prices are appropriate for the quality of the food. read more

Came for bottomless brunch and really enjoyed it! Our group of 7 all took up the bottomless brunch deal - $25 for an entree and unlimited brunch drinks. I had the al pastor breakfast burritos and 2 hours of orange mimosas - it was great! The portion sizes are modest, which I appreciate. They have patio and rooftop seating, although service is slightly slower there. Worth the trip overall! read more

Finally got in last night. I live 3 blocks away and the waits have always been insanely long. Now I know why. The food is very good, fun and relatively cheap. The cuisine is apparently from the state of Pueblo in Mexico. My wife and I had the corn on the cob which came with shredded cheese, lime, salt and chili powder. Super delicious. We also had a chimicurra (?) which is basically a little burrito filled with sauteed vegetables. Also super tasty. We had a gigantic sandwich that I found so-so. It was too busy, too big and too salty. Finally, we had a chocolate mousse that was really nice. The tiny space is nicely designed but it's a very loud place. They crank punk rock (which I love but the music pre-dates 90% of the clientele and staff) and people are packed in so tightly that conversations have to be loud. The staff was uniformly graceful and nice to us despite the mayhem that's inevitable when you pack so many people in such a small place. All in all a nice place. Try to go off-peak. Otherwise you'll never get a table. And brace yourself for commotion and noise, buy you'll be rewarded with really tasty food and drink. read more

THE CHOOCH! This review is just for their happy hour, which I believe ends at 7pm (but double check that.) We ONLY go for their happy hour and we absolutely love it. $4 margaritas and beer, $2.50 tacos, and $2.50 (or 3? Can't remember) corn on the cob. I don't know what cheesy spicy goodness they slather all over that corn, but you will be addicted. I normally avoid corn, but this is just so good you can't pass it up. A friend of mine that I regularly go here with has been known to go through 4+ corns in one sitting. That good. Now, if I were paying full price for this, I'm not sure I'd give them past a 3. But the HH deals are so, so worth it. Plus, on a nice day, you can sit outside or upstairs on the normally enclosed roof and do some great 11th St. people-watching. read more

I love this place! Kevin, who sometimes works at the bar, is great and has really good tips on what to drink. I've heard the same about other bartenders here. I love that they have mezcal! Not easy to find at bars. The veggie tacos are great--but a little dry without a side of salsa. The food is definitely a little different, not always what'd you'd expect. For example, the queso is really fried pieces of cheese, not dip. The torta is like 90% loaf of bread, 10% other ingredients. Maybe this is what everyone expects when they order these things and I am just ignorant. But sometimes you just gotta experiment. I really like the tortilla soup, when they have it as a special. I think the prices are definitely a little high for the portions. But the food is quality and they have good specials on Tuesday nights. I'm not aware of all their deals but I'll report back next time I'm there. read more

My friends and I decided to stop here for an early dinner after an art exhibit. We wanted tacos and tequila and this place did not disappoint. Being in the service industry, I don't always get the chance to go out. When I do, service is usually shitty or snobby. What a refreshing change! Our server was involved, interested, and friendly. We moved to the bar after we ate and the bartender was engaged and excited about sharing his knowledge with us about my favorite spirit. He even ran out to our car as we were leaving to give us stickers. We drove from Richmond and could have eaten anywhere--so glad we chose this gem! We can't wait to revisit! read more

My actual rating is 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up for the good service. I came here with a group this weekend and overall had a positive experience. The price was super reasonable! $22 for bottomless mimosa/hibiscus drinks and your choice of entrée. I got some sort of breakfast nachos, with eggs, black beans, cheese, etc...it was okay, I found the chips extremely dry. The drinks were standard. A friend got a "manmosa", a bloody mary with beer. I hated it, but if you're into that type of thing you may like it. The atmosphere was nice - always appreciate a place where you can actually hear yourself talk. The service was fast and very friendly, and they kept the mimosa glasses full which is crucial to a successful bottomless brunch. It's a little out-of-the-way...I'm in Arlington, and it was close to a 30 minute Uber - so I'm not sure if I'd venture out this way unless I was already in the area. I found the food pretty average as well. Regardless, if you DO live in this area, this is a solid choice for brunch. read more

This place was amazing! Took my girlfriend here on a date and everything about the place was 5/5. The tacos were some of the best we've had anywhere in the world and the Al Pastor burrito was fantastic. The elote was also a perfect start to the meal. So I really had high hopes for this place and took a chance and ordered off Uber Eats. First of all seriously guys please invest in to go boxes/packaging! My elote came wrapped in checkered paper and foil so by the time I unwrapped it all the cheese and sauce were stuck on the paper which left me with a plain ol' naked corn on the cob. I was literally licking the paper in between taking bites of my corn so I could get the goodness of the flavors. So sad! My fish tacos also came balled up in aluminum foil and paper and were completely mushed together. Ugh!!! Maybe next time Ill actually go in the spot instead of ordering out. But cmon guys if you are going to offer to go options then please buy the necessary packaging to preserve the quality of your food. Also, napkins and plastic utensils would be nice as well. Something I failed to get in my bag!!!! read more

This place has incredible food and absolutely unbelievable service. I have celiac and moronically forgot to ask about gluten free for the tacos that I ordered--when I noticed the server immediately took them away and repeatedly asked if I wanted a different order (which I declined) and then brought me additional tacos "just in case I was hungry." They didn't end up charging us for any of the tacos I ordered when it was all entirely MY fault and were super sympathetic to my dumb mistake. These people are amazing and the rest of service was ridiculously fast and amazing. read more

This is one heck of a taco spot and in a great location in Columbia Heights. My girlfriend and I decided to come on a whim and split their house margaritas and shared an assortment of tacos. My favorite was the Asada, but some of their specialty tacos look like they need further investigation. Normally I would give this place a 4-star rating, however, the service, atmosphere, and prices set it apart. This is a great place to go on a date night, or catch up with 5 friends you haven't seen in a minute. read more

Hands down the best happy hour in the area. Incredible food and service. Not much for vegans, but they were happy to hold the cheese on their veggie tacos, which were delicious! Fresh salsa and Strawberry Habanero Margaritas- this will definitely be my go-to place in the neighborhood. read more

As far as service is concerned, we ate at the bar and while the bartender was a bit cold at the beginning, he warmed up to us and eventually provided a wealth of information about everything from the food to their vast tequila selection- he really knows his stuff. The drinks were delicious. The house marg can be spiced up with a chili lime salt, which was great. Maybe I'll be a bit more adventurous next time with the drink choice. The tequila tasting we were talked into at the end of the night was great as well. The food overall was phenomenal with very few low points. Most items we ordered seemed to have a complex layering of flavors that took the chiched "American-Mexican" food to a whole new level. We started out with the chips and guac. While it was good, I would second-guess ordering it again due to its high price tag ($8- and you get about 12 chips total). The queso frito was delicious and the sauce it came with was a great add. For the second round, the flautas were life-changing. They were definitely the best thing we ordered overall. The street corn was incredible as well- really, really decadent but still sweet. The last round was the most underwhelming of the bunch. The calabacita was really bland. It only took about six bites to consume the entire thing and only 1 or 2 of those bites actually had any flavor. The rest was overwhelming by the corn in the tortilla. More seasoning/squeeze of lime and they would be on par with everything else. Others I was with enjoyed their main courses more than I did, so I just think I'll branch out from the calabacita when we return. Overall- great, great neighborhood spot! read more

I love coming here on Mondays for their all day happy hour. I essentially always end up getting the same thing: a few tacos, elote, and the spicy margs they have on tap. It's always packed, so you might have a wait a little bit-- especially with a group-- but the happy hour deals are worth it. On a nice night, their roof is one of the more enjoyable places in the city. It's definitely a trendy place, so thats why the prices are a little higher than some other mexican restaurants in the area. read more

I live down the street from this place and I'm always excited to go back. Great tacos, and a great value at happy hour. Also, the guacamole is excellent. Beers are mostly Mexican, with some good craft ones thrown in. The on-tap margaritas are damn good, and -- though I'm not much of a mescal drinker -- I hear that's top-notch as well. I've seen some reviews complaining about the service; I've never had an experience that's left me aggravated, but I don't think I set my expectations as high for a chic Mexican hole-in-the-wall as I would for other places, so I might be biased. Lastly, I have not had their brunch since they brought it back, but when I tried it before, I loved it. Glad to see it's back on the menu and pumped to have it again. read more

SO disappointing lately! No mas. I've always been a lover of El Chucho mostly because it's cheap-ish and the rooftop and outside feel are nice and there are some delicious items on the menu. Lately, however, everything has been sub-par. I went twice in the last week hoping that it would redeem itself the second time, but alas no. The first time it took 40 minutes for our drinks to come (20 minutes for the food, which we'd finished by the time our drinks arrived). The second time it was the same story: the drinks came well after we were done eating, but there was almost NO ONE IN THE RESTAURANT. How is this even possible? So yes, in sum the service is terrible -- like REALLY terrible. And the food is honestly hit or miss. The queso frito (which used to be a favorite) changes every time I go there, but not for the better, and the carne asada tacos are always rubbery. My friends and I were all quite let down because we all used to love this place. I guess we'll have to find a new spot because El Chucho has severely disappointed way too much recently. :( read more

Walked by el chucho last month and thought it looked really hip and fun. Finally made it in for a drink last night and was very pleased! My friend and I had already had dinner and were just looking to extend our night a little more. We found two seats at the bar and were greeted with menus and glasses of water from the bartenders. They have quite a few margaritas on the menu (in addition to the slushy ones!) as well as a pretty cool beer selection. I opted for a maui coconut porter (which was $6 and delicious), while my friend opted for a ginger margarita with chili lime salt on the rim which was strong and flavorful! When we left at midnight, the place was pretty much cleared out. It is a great place to catch up with friends- good music, but not too loud, good drinks, friendly staff. I'll definitely repeat! read more

My friend and I made it to El Chucho for happy hour (til 6:30PM). We waited a couple of minutes until we could be seated upstairs. It was super noisy because they had a plastic curtain closing it in, without which we would have had some fresh air on our faces. We had ginger margaritas, frozen strawberry margaritas, squash tacos, street corn on the cob (delicious!), chips and salsa, and steak tacos. Everything was delicious except the steak tacos, as the steak was pretty tough. Service was speedy and friendly. I wish this place were in my neighborhood- I'd be a regular here!!! read more

I've been to El Chucho probably 5 times and had very enjoyable service and food. This past time made me change my mind about it, and I will likely not go again. I won't get into the little details, but I will say that service was so bad that my party decided to leave before we had even had our drink orders taken. We were made to feel like second-class patrons. It's unfortunate because we leave about three blocks away and had made this a regular go-to dining spot. Not anymore. All in all, food and service are mostly good. But look out for an off night and it will leave a bad taste in your mouth for a long time. read more

I really like this place. This was my second time here and it's a good take on Mexican cuisine. It's a nice change compared to all the Tex Mex spots around the DMV. I also really like the atmosphere, it's kind of divvy feeling with a little bit of rustic modern cowboy! As for the food, I really like it. Traditional Mexican street style tacos with fresh ingredients and oh so tasty! Yum, Beef Tongue, what a good choice! The portions aren't huge, but just right to allow one to try many different items. One thing I wish I had tried was the corn and by some of the reviews, I'm definitely missing out. Not to worry though, I'll be back. Also to mention, I really like that they have 3 Stars on Draft! read more

We ordered for delivery on a snowy Saturday, we were better off starving. In short, the menu at El Chucho appears to be a hipsterized version of Mexican food. While I appreciate the concept if executed properly - think Jaleo - El Chucho misses the mark. We ordered tacos de asada, the enchiladas, and the pork belly burrito. I address each in turn. Because this was for delivery, this review does not address ambiance or other attributes that could, but are unlikely to, change my rating. ASADA TACOS: We went with the asada tacos because they were a popular delivery option. While the size and proportions were similar to street tacos, that's where the similarities ended. The tortillas were dry and the asada was overcooked. The tacos were topped with items that I can describe as not being onions and cilantro. The lack of salsa was almost as disappointing as the attempt to hipsterisize these tacos with the use of cotija cheese. ENCHILADAS: These were two braised chicken tacos laid on their side with a splash of mole and - you guessed it - a lot of cotija. PORK BELLY BURRITO: El Chucho, I have smoked pork belly, braised pork belly, and rendered pork belly. That burrito was not made with pork belly. It was made of braised and shredded pork with none of the fatty deliciousness that makes pork belly, well, pork belly. RICE AND BEANS: Having grown up in a Mexican household, like many Mexican-Americans, I judge a Mexican food restaurant by its rice and beans. As the Russian-agent elect would say of the rice and beans at El Chucho - so sad. Mexican rice is not yellow, it's supposed to have a tomato base. Mexicans don't do refried black beans; they are supposed to be pinto. AND THERE WAS HAIR IN MY CONTAINER OF CHEESE. Less cotija, more coti-hair, I suppose. read more

First, I'd like to begin with a background story leading up to the horrible experience I had yesterday 08/21/2017. It was my sisters birthday and she wanted to meet here at 7.30pm but my group of 4 (including myself) were late and did not arrive until 8.30pm. My sisters group of 5 asked to be moved to a table for 5, after being at the bar downstairs for 45 minutes catching up. When I arrived with my group, I texted her asking her where she was and she said upstairs. So we approached the restaurant/bar and was presented with 3 people surrounding the host booth with one lady (hair shaven on the sides, pony tail and shorter sized lady) slouched over the booth having a conversation with the other two people. Vey unwelcoming, so we proceeded into the restaurant/bar to locate my sister. After not being able to find the stairs case, we went back to the front only to be greeted with A HUGE attitude from the same lady who took no interest in our presence walking towards her when we entered. She asked us what we were doing and she finally told us to go to the back and our party would be up there. Now begins the horrific story about the poor service we experienced that night. Please keep in mind that my group of 4 has never been here and didn't know what this place was about. The server, Michael, came to the table and look at us (the new guests to the table) and in doing so I started to ask for a glass of water. I was quickly interrupted by him with an index finger and the words "I'll be back." He proceeded to grab empty plates and grabbed glasses, which were not empty and our friends were still drinking, and did not ask if we needed another or didn't even ask if my one friend was finished with that. He left and came back and sat on the table next to us and asked my group if we wanted anything to drink. Here is where I knew it was going to be horrible service. Me: May I have a coke? Michael (server): We don't have coke Me: (thinking they have pepsi products and not coke) oh ok do you have pepsi? Michael: We don't have soda Me: So you don't have any soda at all? Michael: We don't have any commercialized sodas. we only have in house sodas. (looks at my friend to take their order and doesn't help or explain anything about their in house sodas to me) Drinks are being ordered and since I didn't know what I wanted because of the soda debacle I ordered a Lime margarita frozen. He asked if I wanted regular or chili salt. I said regular. He asked me again and said do you want regular salt or chili salt. Raising his voice slighty but still sitting on the table next to us giving off a "I don't even want to be here" vibe. So I repeated Regular a little louder. With an attitude he repeated regular salt or chili salt and at this point I was getting irritated that this Michael character was not attempting to be friendly nor help explain the fact that they had 2 choices of salting for their margaritas. So I looked at him and said "Regular! As I have said the last three two times sir." The night went on and after being there for an hour one group decides to ask for their bill and keep in mind they had been sitting their before we arrived and had ordered their own food before we arrived as well. when the bill came he had put our group and my sisters groups bill together and didn't even ask our end of the table if we needed anything else or wanted dessert or another drink. We got his attention and asked to split the bill seeing how it was a party and two groups came at different times. He said we cant do that and walked away. After that we did not see him again until we left on our way out. The food was good and the margaritas were great but the service between Michael and the lazy and unwelcoming host downstairs are the main reason for this rating. if it weren't for those two ruining the night for all of us, we would have had a great time celebrating a special event here. I am not at all saying we didn't enjoy the food and the endless happy hour they have for Monday nights, because we did. We will not be going back and it is a shame because this place has potential. If Michael and the Host on duty last night represent the service El Chucho endorses, I don't see myself recommending this place to anyone. read more

Came here for Happy Hour with some friends on a Monday after work around 5:30. Not too crowded, which was nice! They have an adorable little rooftop area where we ate, cute twinkle lights and the happy hour prices are great! Really cheap tacos and drinks! They are kind of small portions though but if you're with friends, it works well to order a couple things and share and still ends up being pretty cheap! We had the vegetarian and the pork tacos, both were great! Also tried the chips and guac and the churros with chocolate sauce! Everything was delicious! The margs were of course good, as well. The only downside of the whole place was that our one friend arrived first and they wouldn't seat her till we were all there, which is kind of an annoying policy - lucky for us it wasn't too crowded so we were still seated right away when we all got there. read more
