El Chido is a Mexican grocery with a restaurant in the back. It definitely has a no-frills type ambiance, but i have always found these hole-in-the-wall type places are where you are going to find the best Mexican food. I took a seat and my server came with a smile. She asked if I spoke Spanish. I replied not really and she said she did not speak much English, but we managed to get my order with no issue. I went with four tacos and I loaded them st their salsa bar. The tacos were pretty good. I was debating giving it four stars, but everyone here was just so incredibly friendly that I had to elevate my score to five stars. I would definitely recommend El Chido. read more

Hidden in the back of a Mexican meat market, this little dive of a restaurant is the Real Deal. Caldo de res and a large horchata will cost you $ 11.50. The folks are pleasant, friendly and helpful...if a little standoffish. Good stuff if you find yourself in Montgomery, Alabama with a flat tire and this little gem is right next to the motorcycle shop... Definitely recommended. read more

I'm a sucker for Mexican food, but especially for those places that look super authentic; sometimes, the more no-frills/hole-in-the-wall the spot is, the better it turns out to be, at least in my experiences. Naturally, I was excited to try El Chido, as it fits the description perfectly -- it's a no-nonsense Mexican market offering both Mexican grocery/produce/snack items, as well as hot food from a restaurant window in the back. I ordered three tacos at $1.95 a piece: one carne asada, one al pastor, and one lengua. The service was prompt, and I was pleased that I didn't have to wait long at all before my tacos were ready at the window. As for the food itself, though, I wasn't completely floored. The carne asada was solid and had a somewhat decent level of seasoning, but nothing super out of the ordinary. The lengua was passable and pretty tender, but was missing a bit more flavor. The portion of meat in my al pastor taco, unfortunately, had quite a lot of fat chunks, and made for a chewy and kind of unpleasant experience. Not the worst place I've ever been to, but I was definitely a tad disappointed considering how authentic the atmosphere feels. I guess the hole-in-the-wall hypothesis doesn't work every time... oh well, can't win 'em all. read more

Good place to get your fill of Mexican food on the cheap! The restaurant is in the back part of a Mexican grocery store. Food was good, came out in around five minutes per order, and enough seating to accommodate groups of around ten or so. If you are looking to drink a few beers with your meal, might want to go somewhere else. read more

This has got to be the only place in Alabama where you can find Pupusas. The tacos were good, and the Pupusas were good too. I got two tacos al pastor and 1 Pupusa with chicharron and queso-all very delicious! Love the salsa bar. Lived in CA for a few years (and my wife is from Mexico) and this place is as good as you can find in Alabama. This supermarket has a small restaurant in the back where they cook up tortas, tacos, and other food. It's probably the best and most authentic Mexican you'll get in Montgomery. Don't come in expecting a fancy place- there are just a few tables and chairs where you can sit and eat your food. But isn't there beauty in simplicity? Plus, the food is cheap and the people are nice. I'd definitely recommend stopping in for a couple of tacos and making liberal use of their salsa bar, which is pretty impressive for Montgomery. read more

El Chido is a tiny Mexican grocery store with a secret taqueria in the back. They have fresh and AUTHENTIC food, which is just about impossible to find in this town. As a snobby West Coast transplant with serious Mexican food needs, I can vouch for their tacos. They are open till 10pm, and the staff is incredibly nice. There is barely any English on the menu, but there are helpful pictures posted above the counter. There are also agua frescas and a salsa bar. Do yourself a favor and eat a meal here. There is no mention of food on their sign, but make your way to the back and immerse yourself in taco bliss. read more
