I have been coming here for years and it is an old school style hole in the wall. Not much to look at on the outside and inside needs some updating, however, food has always been great. We love this place for old school Mexican food. Any thing with the chili verde is excellent. You can even get it for salsa with your chips. The nachos are very good and generous in portions and worth a visit by themselves. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. I was looking for a different place to eat on a Friday night, and was also in the mood for Mexican. When i narrowed it to that, i chose this restaurant because it got reviews and was close by. Aand i was really in the mood for some nachos, so my gf and i decided to head to El Charro to give it a try. For one, the place looked nice. It took us a bit to find the hostess because it wasn't right at the front door, which seemed odd. But anyway, let's get down to the food. I ordered my nachos with asada, and my gf ordered an asada plate. The nachos were actually good, however i didn't like the beans on them. Maybe cause I'm used to not having them but otherwise good. My gf's plate however, she told me that her piece of meat had more fat than anything which was unappealing. Drinks were goofld though In the end, i would give it a B- as a grade. If I could put ZERO STARS I would... taco Tuesday and it's busy.. Took a while for the chips and salsa to be served. Even before getting water or ordering food, we were told by a waiter that "There's a lot of people waiting for their food and it will take an hour. Look this big table waiting for their food". It felt like he was implying we should leave which we did. Got up and left the table. WOW. NEVER AGAIN. I've NEVER felt so out of place being non Caucasian. I felt everyone's eyes on us as soon as we walked in. Montrose is known for being a racist little town with the older Caucasians. After 30 years of going to El Charro and loving Taco Tuesday as a lifelong customer I felt disrespected. Many years we have lunch and drinks. In this particular Taco Tuesday it was my wife's birthday on 7-30-19 and we had poor service due to waiter was distracted, unresponsive, and no one brought a candle , cake, or flan. Old school restaurant since 1955. A local told us not to bother eating here because the food was nasty. We love old classic restaurants so no matter what we still were going, bad food or not. When we walked in after 700pm there were only two guys at the bar watching a game, we were the only patrons. We still took our seats at the booth. The waitress who I believe is the owner recommended a few dishes especially the Chili Verde pork combo plate which is the one I ordered, she said it was very hot, I love chili hot. The chips and salsa that they bring to the table was very good and hot, no gringo sauce here. It wasn't long before we got our order and just like she said the Chili Verde was chili hot. The only thing I didn't care for was the rice which was a bit dry, but still edible. If you like to walk into a time warp with friendly service I would recommend that you try this place. read more

Don't miss this classic, long-standing local gem. My wife had the shredded beef and I asked for a surf and turf grande burrito--a combo of shrimp and carne asada of my own invention that turned out much better than the hostess supposed it would. The meats and sauces are tender and flavorful. This is an iconic local sit-down Mexican spot, different from the taco truck fare more common nowadays in LA (which is delicoous in a different way). Here you are expected to wash down copiously large amounts of meat, cheese, rice and tortilla with margaritas. Much obliged. Nice atmosphere inside. You can find me here every Tuesday during my lunch break. Why? On taco tuesday, tacos are $1.75 and they are delicious. I repeat, $1.75 for delicious tacos. My usual order is one chicken and one beef and a side of beans with cheese. I eat the beans with the chips and basically drink the salsa. When I am finally done with my tacos, I use all the extra lettuce and cheese from the Taco and create a taco salad. I am giving four stars for the quality of food. It is definitely not the best but the service and price really make up for that one extra missing star. The seats can be a little uncomfortable, but this place has been around for decades and I am happy El Charro is still there. read more

El Charro is a Montrose institution. It's not fancy, really low-key, and you can get takeout from them during the lockdown. We just had the tostada grande with shredded beef (comes with lettuce, tomato and shredded cheese, beans if you want them and a side container of guac and sour cream to top it off). We also ordered the beef enchilada and chili relleno combo, with rice and beans and they threw in tortillas just because I asked if it came with. They were willing to come out to the parking lot, but it was quiet enough to go in to pick up without getting close to anyone (and the woman was wearing a mask). This is an old-school kind of place that's never needed a website and doesn't really do social media or email. Because of that, they are now quiet and could really use customers. read more

I get cravings for there chicken taco. I am not usually a chicken guy but there crispy taco is just shredded chicken, lettuce (with some Italian? dressing on it), guacamole and cheese. Simple and amazing. There Chili Verde is good but crazy hot , so be warned. When ordering the cost of rice and beans seems a tab high but they are really good. The decor is very throw back and could use some love. Strawberry margaritas are worth getting. So yes- I am a fan! If my family liked it as much as me this would have been a 5 star review. read more

Decided to check this place out because it's across the street from my new office. It was nearly empty at lunch hour, save for a handful of dudes drinking at the bar and scattered middle-aged people in booths. The service was good, but the food was mediocre at best. I ordered cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans. The rice and beans had the taste and texture of last week's leftovers. The enchiladas had turned into a greasy soup. Don't waste your time. It's just obvious being there the owner doesn't care about this place. They should sell it to someone who can run a restaurant with good food/service! We got there as a party of 10 they tried to sit us at a 8 person table. We ordered margaritas which were tiny and terrible. Maybe not the worst I ever had but for a Cadillac def not good. They didn't have avacado? Obviously their quac isn't fresh. The tacos were just ok. The salsa is served in styrofoam bowls. I will never come back.
