My family has been going here since we were young kids, now going in my late twenties. I'm sad to say that the service and the quality of food have gone down over the years. My dad and I went there on Taco Tuesday last week and we waited over 15 minutes just for someone to acknowledge us and get us water. Then another 20 minutes to come back to even take our order. Finally when we got our food, it just wasn't good, food was very greasy and cold. It made me sad to see one of our favorite childhood places go down hill. read more

Been going here since I was a little kid, i.e. many years. Not pretentious, just good food. I like bell peppers but they don't put them in everything like some places do. My wife likes that. Best taco, the chips are always ultra fresh, and they have the very best tomato salsa in LA, it is a secret recipe and it doesn't taste like tomato sauce out of the can.Their shredded beef hard shell taco are simply divine and succulent. I have been eating there for more than 20 years. Great service and very professional friendly staff. Their lunch special is a very good deal. I have to go there at least twice a week. We went here about a month ago at lunch time on a weekend. The place was fairly busy but I don't really see why. Atmosphere-wise it's dark and kind of dreary. Sometimes dark can feel comfortable and lived-in; here it just feels old. The waitress seemed tired and frazzled and the food was just o.k. We'll probably give it another try just because we usually try things a couple times before writing it off but we aren't in any hurry. La Cabanita is right down the street and we usually end up there instead. Someone mentioned parking is a problem. There's some parking right behind the restaurant but if that is full you can always park in the public lots on the north side of Honolulu. It's not a far walk. read more

My friends and wife lovingly and jokingly call this place Cheese Crisis after a mistake was made on the specials board years ago. One thing is true, they love their cheese! For a small Mexican rest. it is Ok in my book. The service was great! The food was good too. Enchilladas were big and stuffed with chicken. My taco was not soaked in wet sauce and was loaded with meat & lettuce & cheese & tomatoes but the best was the real avacado. It was not a puree or avacado & water or have alot of garbage in it, it was avacado. The price was great too. Very friendly staff. read more

I like El Charro. It is a little bit dark, deco is 1970's, food is average. But it has ATMOSPHERE! I specifically love taco Tuesdays (tacos and burritos are very cheap). It is not fine dining, but I get a kick out of eating here. They also have a full bar. read more

I have been going to El Charro's Taco Tuesday deals for about 5 years now, and their shredded beef tacos and bean and cheese burritos are fantastic representatives of Los Angeles' Mexican cuisine. Went here the other night and my fiancé and I were both happy. The portions were large and they didn't skimp on the guacamole for my fiances taquitos. She even had extra for me to put on my shredded beef tacos. I got the large also digs soup and it was just that. Large. Very pleased. Will definitely be back. read more

I cannot believe the service we just received from the owner tonight at this establishment. We have come here every Tuesday for months with our family and friends. We loved this place! My friend wanted a drink so decided to go to the bar while waiting for a table, she then refuses service because he smells like booze and weed. Which was strange because he just got off of work. She then has the audacity to come back to the table while we are already seated ordering drinks and take my husbands ID and say "it's better if no alcohol is served at this table" as if we were causing a problem or making a scene. All we did was come to enjoy our weekly Taco Tuesday dinner at El Charro. NEVER AGAIN, I cannot tell you how embarrassed and degraded I feel by that woman. Please don't come here, she obviously does not care about regulars or costumers. You've been warned. read more

Had been going here for 6-7 months for Taco Tuesday. I usually go with my friend and young daughter. Two weeks ago i had to draw the line. Every time we are seated in the North/ East side of the Restaurant and we get this server Jose, at least that's what was written on the bill. He always starts by taking my friends and her daughters order and asks what they want to drink but when he takes my order he never asks me what i want to drink and he turns quickly and walks away. It has happened 4-5 times that my friend and i even joke about it and the last time i ordered she even had to raise her voice as he turned away and told him "he would like something to drink as well" Two times ago i ordered guacamole with my tacos and he brought them back without guacamole so i told him that i ordered with and he replied "No you didn't". We where all hungry so i said "that's OK ill just eat them like that" he then left. My friend then tells me "i clearly heard you tell him you wanted guacamole with your tacos" i replied "i know what i said but that's OK". May i add that every time we are seated in this section and get this server, he NEVER comes back and checks on us and i mean NEVER. We have had to get my drinks from the bus boy the 4-5 times he left me dry. This is only with me that he does this to, my friend and her daughter get there order and drinks with no issue. It has happened every time that in the beginning we joked about it but it got to the point that we thought it was now personal towards me. Well, this last time two weeks ago we went back on our regular Tuesday and this time i need to add that he didn't ask me again if i needed a drink and my friend got his attention as he was turning away but when he left my friend and i started conversation and i'm not kidding, he was next to us within 2min with our orders. "WOW that was fast" i said. I take a bite and the Taco was cold. i ask my friend "how are yours? "cold" she replied. The meat was cold. We where hungry so we at them like that. OK, I DRAW THE LINE! I had a conversation with my friend and we both came to an agreement that we should say something. So since we knew that Jose would not come back to check on us anyways, we got the attention of the bus boy and asked to speak to the owner. She came to our table and we explained from the beginning and added that we didn't want to say anything about how i was being treated but this time our food was cold to top it off and Jose just never comes back to check up on us. The owned really got on the defense side and said that her staff is changing and she is doing what she can and that she never has had a complaint on Jose before. We explained about the cold Tacos how we got them just within the time that it took to go to the kitchen and bring them back and they where cold. How can that be if they are coming straight from the kitchen. The owner grabbed our bill and said "this one is on me". That is not the answer i wanted to hear. Throughout the entire conversation with her she was defensive towards staff, service and food quality. The owner turns around and leaves so we get up and go out to the door and i tell my friend "that was not the outcome i wanted' i didn't want to get a freebee. My friend replies "you didn't hear what she said at the end? i said "No, what did she say?" she told my friend "By the way, OUTSIDE FOOD IS NOT PERMITTED" she said that at the end of the conversation. OMG! my friends daughter had a small bag of chips she was holding on to from earlier and had maybe 5 chips in it that she didn't finish. I will also add that we had ordered in 3 separate occasions from the kids menu and they ran out of Chicken Strips that are m friends daughters favorite so on those days the little girl just sat and ate nothing because kids can be picky. On those day we would have wanted to bring outside food since we cant get what is on the menu. How Unprofessional is that? I could not believe i missed that. This comment was coming straight from the owner... OMG! its not like we had an outside drink or Fast Food from another establishment. What customer service.... WOW. What a way to make a situation worse... I do want to add that the other female servers are awesome and always come back and check up on you and are just sweet people. Awesome customer service from them every time. If i had a restaurant i would honestly hire them on the spot. To end with... I will never go back to any place that treats customers in that manner. read more

El Charro has been a family go to for a lot of years but in the last couple years the service has become the worst! The bar is very click-y - regulars get served first and if you just happen by the bar to wait for a to go order you wait and wait for bar service - maybe they think you order more alcohol if you have to wait longer - watched while folks not in the bar who ordered to go food after us get their order first. Some of the wait staff are very unattentive-like we were invading their space/time. While we love the food when dining IN the restaurant - crunchy tacos are great. The TO GO tacos on taco Tuesday are noticeably smaller and EXTREMELY greasy than what you get when dining in. I don't see this favorite lasting too long if this all keeps up. read more

Horrible. Margarita glass was filthy on inside. The food was mediocre at best. The decor is really old. When we walked in it smelled like an old persons house. And they messed up one of our food orders. Really not a great place. The staff is friendly but the menu is like a diner menu. Limited food selection,and a really poor drink selection. I've been on a Mexican food kick lately, and locally, I normally frequent Joselito's for my Mexican food and that's more because of the margaritas than anything. Visiting El Charro right after a trip to Joselito's really made me realize how much El Charro sucks. The food is alright, but they do have $1.50 Taco Tuesday. The margaritas although made strong are not very good. They're also served in a lo-ball glass that looks like you sip scotch on the rocks out of. Instead of the traditional Margarita Monday, they have Margarita Wednesday, so if you're looking for a cheap drink, it's not bad. Aside from those two perks if you're in the area head over to Joselito's or Los Gringos. read more

El Charro is one the best Mexican restaurants in the area! Good food and service. We like their cheese enchiladas, soups, and fajitas, but everything we've tried over the past 2 years has been very good. Beans and rice = tasty, chips and salsa = very good as well. I found the menu online and it sounded quite tasty and offered many options. This was my first time there and I will not be returning. I was looking for something more authentic than Joselito's but this place was so much worse. The salsa and beans were totally from a can and the rest of the food was extremely salty.That carpet was disgusting and has probably been there since they opened. The waitress didn't even offer us dessert and just disappeared after dropping off the check. We will definitely not be returning to this restaurant. read more

Came by here, had some dinner. I was craving mexican and this was the only mexican restaurant in the area, so i decided to try it. They have a large menu. I was craving a quesadilla so i ordered it with chicken. I must say, this place had the TASTIEST & MOST DELICIOUS chicken quesadilla I've ever had. The chicken had this bbq roasted taste. It was very good. 4 slices comes with guac and sour cream. I ate 3 slices and was already full. There was one piece left, but i didnt want it to go to waste, it was just too good so i ate the last piece. BEST chicken quesadilla I've ever ate. For sure whenever I'm craving a quesadilla, this is the place to be to eat it! DELICIOUS! I'm sure the other foods they offer are just as good. Haven't tried other dishes, but the ambiance is nice and quiet. Dimmed lighting, they have a bar its a nice quiet restaurant. Not so crowded with people but over all I give it 5 stars for the food i experienced. Will return again! read more

Met my family here for taco tuesday and I have to say the tacos were ok they give you a lot of lettuce and cheese on top of the taco that kind of overpowers the whole thing. The salsa is decent and the service was ok. I was not a huge fan of the atmosphere it very dark and needs a big update. read more

We love Taco Tuesday! Our family has decided to make it a weekly tradition, with $1.50 shredded beef taco's, $3.25 bean and cheese burritos, how can you go wrong? The service is usually decent, the only thing I would ding it for is the decor, very dated. The staff seems to know us now, we usually get the chile verde burrito (normally I don't eat the pork, but the sauce is awesome). They have excellent rice and beans (beans are very cheesy). The salsa is not the best (they overdue the cilantro), but the other food makes up for it. The kid will sometimes get the kids burger or kids chicken and he seems to enjoy it. read more

Anyone who gives this place more than one star is seriously smoking something. It is by far the worst Mexican food ever. I don't know how they stay in business when even their chips and salsa suck. That should have been my first clue...besides the dark and dingy atmosphere. But I gave them a chance and was in awe at how bad the food was.
