We came for lunch the next day and it was more manageable. We bucked up and dove in. We learned that the drill is to find a table or bar space and order drinks, then peruse the tapa offerings along the bar. You pay when you've ordered the items you want. When you want more, you return to the bar, get more and pay. Tables are precious, but they do turn over so just be patient. The folks behind the bar get busy. If you speak Spanish, you can get their attention more easily. If not, don't be shy, signal you are ready to order. The staff is there to move customers, so be quick about decisions. They do understand and speak some English though there's not much chatting going on. This was some of the best tapas we've had on the the trip and we went to Madrid and San Sebastian. We just picked things that looked interesting not knowing what they were. Everything was delicious. Several items were creamy and rich like the crispy duck, crispy spinach and shrimp, and the sea urchin. The foie gras was cooked just enough to brown but still had plenty of melty richness. We had everything plus 4 beers for about $57. It's a great place and definitely worth a visit if you're in Pamplona.

Café Iruña was founded in 1888 and is located in the Plaza del Castillo of Pamplona. This is an…read moreimportant historic site in itself, as it exudes local culture and tradition, and apparently was one of the first places in the City to be lit by electricity. This is Center City and the Sunday were were here, all the book sale booths in the square were in full operation and the place was buzzing with activity. Iruña is the Basque name for Pamplona, which is also a main thoroughfare for the Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago (French Route) as they descend from the Pyrenees, and of course a famous place for the "Running of Bulls". Gayle and I sat outside to enjoy our coffee, to watch the world walk by, and to meet a tour guide. Our informative Basque guide immediately lit up when we told him that we were from Nevada, as that were a lot of Basque people ended up. After showing us the comfortable historic main Cafe room, he led us to a smaller ornate room that also serves as a monument to Ernest Hemingway. We had previously been to Hemingway's former home in Havana Cuba, so experiencing another siting of this famous author was a real treat. So was the opportunity to experience this iconic "coffee shop" and the various local and global folks who linger here for the moment.

Upstairs is a delightful restaurant that's a favorite with locals. The service here is impeccable and the food was fabulous. We started with a grilled vegetable plate -- vegetables are hard to find in Spain in October! We also enjoyed the classic Spanish meal of grilled steak and potatoes. Our waitress recommended a very nice rioja, the wine of the region. That was superb too! We're not normally dessert eaters, but we wanted to extend this lovely experience so we ordered the waitress' suggestion of a chocolate dessert with cafe con leche.

There are chefs from some of the bigger cities in Spain relocating here and doing great things. But there are also local ones that have gone through the world and have come back to make great restaurants. The long standing Pilar Idoate has her small little empire with her family for sure. Chef David Yarnoz has taken the old mill house on the outskirts of Pamplona in Urdaniz and created a gastronomic oasis for the area. Navarre is an interesting area. People consider themselves Basque or Spanish, there is not a lot of folks that think of themselves as both. Kingdom back in the day was quite powerful and of course comes lots of influences of war and conquest. So you get the influences of the cooking of said Kingdom and a chef that expresses all the products and techniques of what it is to be in this region. It's an amazing experience to off the beaten path, away from the main city and be able to eat high end interpretations (they also make classics at the sister space) of the Navarran countryside.
