After arriving at the Martim Moniz Square in the morning, I looked for a long line to figure out where the tram starts. The wait wasn't too bad- less than 30 minutes. We hopped onboard the third tram that came around as they have limited seating- about 20 seats. You can stand though. The ride was about 30 minutes and ended around Chiado. We got to the train station in Martin Mainz And waited in a long line, :45 for the electric tram. Realized we needed to get a day pass and walked back to the station to get a 48 hour pass. We were warned at our hotel about pickpockets here, they were hawkers offering us rides & things. We weaved past churches, shops, cafes, museums, lots of beautiful tiled buildings. The ride ended at a cemetery where we all disembarked and waited for an electric car back. I don't know what o was expecting, but it wasn't anything special. read more

Tram 28 will take you around much of Alfama and as far west as Estrela. The tram starts at Martim Moniz station. There is always a huge lineup at Martim Moniz and I don't recommend boarding here as you'll wait for 2 hours. Instead, get on the tram from the other direction, such as at Baixa Chiado. The tram costs €3 per person. If you plan on taking this tram at least 3 times in 24 hours, I recommend getting the 24 hour combined metro pass for €6.40 (+€0.50 for the Viva Viagem card) to save some money. I've read that locals take this tram, but I don't know how they could when the wait is extremely long and the tram is packed full of tourists. The tram also slows down a few times while tourists get in its way to take a photo of the tram in action. My recommended stops are: 1. Graca - to walk to Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen for a panoramic view of Lisbon, the water, and Sao Jorge castle. 2. Limoeiro - to visit Se Cathedral. 3. Limoeiro - to take the 737 bus up to Sao Jorge castle, after visiting Se Cathedral. read more

Totally over rated tram ride! Here are a few tips. - It costs €3. - Long line at M Moniz can be avoided by walking to the next stop or two. Or go in reverse from Baixa Chiado. - Tram can often get packed. So it's really hard to see much nor take pictures along the way. - If you really want to see the sights, best to just walk the route. - I could not figure out which 28 goes to the end and which only goes to Campo Ourique. The one I was on stopped at Campo so had to the Uber to the end. Bottom line, long wait, crowded, can't see much, totally not worth your time. If all you want is a ride on the unique Tram...take any of them....don't waste your time on this one. read more

Simply loved the 28 tram. We had read that it would be overcrowded but since travel was significantly limited with Covid we had the whole tram to ourselves. We were able to really get a feel for all of the lovely neighborhoods around Lisbon. We also were able to see many sites along the way and catch some beautiful views. We also use it as a means to get to the S. George's castle. I purchased a magnet with the tram on it to remember this experience. Sure beats walking up and down all of those hills! read more

This is a very cheap, easy way to get around Lisboa, but if you're looking forward to running into some charismatic locals, don't kid yourself, for you're more likely to run into someone from Cleveland than Lisbon. Yes, the locals tend to walk everywhere so these quaint trolleys are overloaded with sweaty tourists. However, just because it is popular with tourists, doesn't mean you shouldn't try it at least once. You really will feel as if you have stepped back in time on these antique trolley cars. Get a shot of yourself getting on or off the trolley and you have a great photo, providing you can get a friend to take a quick pic before the car rolls down the track...But then again, maybe you're rolling with a selfie stick. read more

The only time to do ride Tram 28 for a tour is first thing in the morning before 8am otherwise you will be packed in the tram like sardines (appropriate metaphor for Portugal). We saw the tram many times in our time in Lisbon and it was always stuffed full. We caught the tram early in the morning on a weekday near our Airbnb in Bairro Alto and rode it into the city. Contrary to what you might read you cannot just keep riding it in a loop. At the end they made us all get off - good thing we rode it into the city vs out to the suburbs. read more

There are many stops along the Tram 28 route but I recommend getting on at the Martim Moniz stop. You can't miss it you would see a long line when you arrive Martim Moniz. The line is not too long if you get there by 10am. I'd recommend you wait until you can get a seat. Trust me its worth the wait. First you can't see anything if you are standing. Secondly you don't have to worry about pickpockets. And the trams always make sudden stops which can make your ride really uneasy. Fare was 3euro but you get discount if you have the Lisboa card. read more

I loved this a must ride in Lisbon! For 1.65 euro or so you can see the whole entire city with your heart in your throat...why you ask? well, lets just say that the drivers drive fast and the streets are super narrow and yes there are people walking everywhere as well. It is an experience to say the least BUT totally worth it and I am not sure if it was just me but the drivers are like men from GQ magazine....hot !!! And if you smile and ask for a pic, well they will be more then accommodating, my hottie took me by my waist and leaned in close....oh my ! I will let you on a little secret, instead on waiting at the first stop for the 28, follow the tracks and go to the second stop, you will get a standing seat and someone will get off within 5 min and you are good. I waited about 30min to get on to only discover that people are waiting for seats. You are welcome. :) read more

Yep, it's a fun thing to do! Great alternative to the more formal Yellowbus tours even though you only see a portion of old Lisbon. And without narration! But if you have a 24 hr metro card there is no cost at all! And you can jump on and off as you wish! Suggestion: definitely catch it at Martim Moniz station (the start) even though you'll have to wait in line. We waited over half an hour but it was worth it!! Many great places to stop and check out the sites! You could spend the whole day exploring just the area covered by Tram 28! And plenty of spaces to stop for a beer and look over the river at incredible views. Oh, we did just that!! We loved the ride and yes, at times you wonder how it makes it through those narrow streets! Although we had many unplanned stops where people parked their cars on the trolley tracks and we had to wait for the idiot to come back and move. What's wrong with some people?? I had heard about how this is a must do and it certainly was a great way to see the whole city. We caught the tram near downtown so most were crowded and standing room only. But if you wait, they sometimes have 2 cars come back to back, and the second car is empty. Once on, get a window seat and take in the views. the driver simply drives and there is no narration from him/her. In some parts of the ride, you will not want to stick your hand out the window because you come so close to the buildings. One of the stops is right at the view point on the hill near the castle. You can't beat it. It takes you far west too, but do not confuse this with the tram that takes you to Belem, that is different. There are many options and we opted for the 24 pass for 6 Euro, which is good for the subway and buses too. read more

Hands down the best way to travel from one part of town to the other. The hills in Lisbon are no joke and it's easy to end up on a street that you think will take you up to your next destination and ends up taking you to other random side streets. We were at La Catedral de Estrela and wanted to head into town to go to St Jorge Castle and there was no way we were going to miss the best chance to get on Tram 28! If you're in Estrela, the tram runs every 15 minutes or so and picks you up right across from the Park or the Cathedral. Really easy! We didn't pay for the 24 hour pass because we didn't know what our plan was going to be for the day. But you can buy it at any metro station for €6 and it makes life easy for you so you can essentially turn the tram into your own " hop off, hop on" tour. We paid the single use €2.90/person fee and enjoyed the 15-20 minute ride up the castle. I would recommend opening the windows so you can get some great fresh air and pictures of all the sites you pass. If you catch the tram in Estrela or well before the heart of town you are almost guaranteed a seat, rather than having to stand awkwardly as the tram jolts you around. We also lucked out that December isn't really peak season for tourism here anyways. read more

I read about the Tram 28 on Tripadvisor and other guidebooks, so it was on my list to do in Lisbon. I almost changed my mind when I saw the long line and after a long wait. It's just an old tram and it's not like I have never been on rickety transportation before... However, after the ride, my conclusion is: most astoundingly yes, most certainly, it's worth the wait! The ride gives you a view and an experience unlike the metro, a newer tram, on foot, or by car. It's fun to see how it twists and turns in the alleys, exhilarating to pass through streets so narrow that the trams in opposite directions have to share the same track, and that you can extend your hand and touch the buildings (not that I recommend you to actually try that). It most certainly is the best cheap thrill. Some notes to make the best of it: Do get on the tram at the terminal by Praca Martim Moniz, a short walk from downtown and nearby metro stations. When I waited, for a good 15 minutes no tram showed up and then two came together, so it's hard to say how long you'll have to stand in line. Definitely get a window seat. Don't try to squeeze onto a crowd tram. There is no fun being sardined inside a tram, you can do that on your daily commute. Be a gentleman and let others go first, then get a seat by the window (an open window if possible though some windows are stuck.) You will be rewarded with a memorable ride. read more

The classic tram ride in Lisboa is the number 28 which will take you from the centre of town to the Castelo de Sao Jorge. It's a nice trip up the hill with some great views and interesting architecture on route. My advice would be to take the tram up and then slowly wander down taking in the vibe of the lovely Alfama district which contains a number of stunning miradouros (viewing points) and some great places to stop for a snack and a cold refreshment. read more

Careful careful careful. Hold on to everything. Had my iPhone stolen by a very clever pickpocket on the trolley. Lisbon is beautiful but ladies, hold onto your handbags and backpacks and gentlemen, don't leave wallets or valuables in your pockets. Take precautions and don't be a victim as we were. Again, Lisbon and it's people are wonderful, just be careful. Also, we were taken advantage of by a taxi driver from the airport to our Airbnb. EXCELLENT TRANSPORT TO BELEM: We took advantage of the tram exiting the Metro in Lisbon to go to Belem. Like the Metro, you pre-purchase a card then swipe it (slowly) at the meter. The tram was a very tourist way to view the city route to Belem and it has many stops along the way. The only consideration is that it does not have air conditioning so it can get a bit warm with a lot of people. Also, be mindful of the stops because there is no notification of the upcoming stops and the outside tram shelters don't always have signage. This is a cheap, fast, easy and convenient way to travel from LIsbon to Belem (which I highly recommend visiting for a day). read more

Very unpleasant driver but I enjoyed the ride. The tram is old, in wood, very traditionnal. We feel 50 years before ! We drop off at the top to look at the wonderful view. Sounds like a nice experience. It's really not. We bought the 24 hour pass. Started at 10:30 Waited 45 minutes at the first stop. Took the tram up to st. George castle. Walked around for a little bit, did not enter the castle. Waited 15 minutes and took the tram down past commerce square to Chiada. It took an extra 20 minutes while we sat and waited for the tram 2 cars in front of us resolved an issue. Walked around Chiada and Commerce square at fast lunch and souvenir stop. Walked back to the closest tram stop. Waited 15 minutes. Took the tram to the last stop which is the halfway point on the route about 40 minute walk from starting point. Told to "get off" by the driver. They empty the trams here and you que up again to take the tram back. If you don't have a day pass you pay again. Wait only 5 or 10 minutes this time. On our way back it's now 4:15 and I'm sure we are still 20 minutes from the stop point. I say ride it for one ride at some point. Use the other public transport available or other options don't waste your day. read more

The best way to get a feel for Lisbon in as quick a time as possible. Feels like traveling back in time as the tram itself is so old fashioned, but that is probably why the tram itself travels at an ideal speed for hanging out of the windows taking pictures. As Neil says, its better to walk back down through Alfama after getting the tram up to the castle, you can explore in a much better frame of mind while heading down steep hills rather than up them read more

I took Tram 28, because there were many good reviews, but found the experience to be very unpleasant. We took the tram on a national holiday on Saturday, so I'm sure it was busier than usual. We took it from the martim moniz stop (that's the first stop) and the line was very long, so it took probably 60 to 80 minutes to just get on the tram. Bus driver typically loads around 30 people per tram, so it became a problem when 200 people are waiting in the line that day. Even when I passed by on Friday afternoon, the line was probably over 50 people, so I would say it's definitely not worth waiting that long for. On the tram itself, it's very uncomfortable and crowded and really doesn't give you a good experience unless you have a seat and is not squeezed by other commuters. As for sightseeing, I couldn't really see that well standing up the entire time and trying to avoid getting sneezed at. As for going up to the locations where it went, I think most of the buses went to the same locations and were no where near as crowded. I actually walked to Castelo St Jorge which was not that hard, so I think you can certainly get to many parts of Alfama without this tram. So I think it does not make sense to take this when there is a line or if you are younger and have no trouble going up and down the hills. read more
