My family had a small gathering at the restaurant in the supply closet also known as the party room. I can say with utter certainty whoever is managing the place does not have the first clue as to how to run a restaurant and the 2nd star comes solely from the fact that the food is decent for what it is. There was about 15 of us and we ordered in 3 groups at slightly different times. There was literally no rhyme or reason to how the food came out of the kitchen. My part of the group ordered the loaded fries, a pizza, a tuna melt and southwest salad. When ordering we were told that they might not have the loaded fries so we told them we would have the seasoned fries if they didn't have them. So then comes food delivery. After about 5 minutes the tuna melt came out. About 5 minutes after that the curly fries came out. 5 minutes after that the pizza came. That makes some sense. Well we eat, enjoy ourselves and are starting to pack up and 30 minutes later as we are finishing the salad shows up. WHAT? Then 5 minutes after that the loaded fries as we were getting ready to pay and walk out the door. Their reasoning for having the salad and fries (which we thought we weren't getting because we got our alternate) come out as desert, they said they were busy. So a pizza comes out in 15 minutes but a salad takes almost an hour? Then the salad which is described as having chips on top, comes out with fried wontons on top. Maybe I am missing something but the other ingredients were Southwest U.S. not Southwest China. I apologize if Wontons are not real Chinese or if they originate from another region. When I called them on it, they said well it said chips. I pointed out that every other place in the country would have put corn chips if anything but he didn't want to argue the point. The pizza is good, but the last two times I've ordered, they mess it up. One time I ordered half olive and half pineapple and I got home and they forgot the pineapple Last week, I ordered plain cheese, and asked it to be cut into squares for my little kids. The guy cut it like normal, glanced over his shoulder at the ticket and then looked st me and said, "that's okay right?" So I said, "no, I have little kids. They don't hold big slices of pizza." I drive here from Naperville, where it is very very hard to keep kosher. I was quite pleased with my pizza. And YAY salad bar! They lose a star because of the atmosphere. Our table needed cleaning and the way the tables were arranged was kind of strange to me. I felt like we were practically on top of the people at the table behind us. I live downtown and keep a kosher home. I had a gathering at my house this past Saturday night and wanted to serve pizza. I went up to Skokie on Friday afternoon and ordered 7 pizza's to go. The next evening, they were warmed to perfection and served with salad. My guest loved the pizza and most were really surprised that the pies were kosher AND from Skokie (no offense to you Skokie peeps). Frankly, I was skeptical about a Kosher pizzeria (pardon my Goyish prejudice) but EJ's serves a good pizza, as well as calzones. The crust is thin and crisp, but still has some flexibility and nice chewiness. The toppings are high quality and fresh. If you're looking for a Chicago Style pie (thick and heavy as a manhole cover) you won't find it here. But if, like me, you like pizza simpler and easier to digest and NY style, then you won't be disappointed. read more

I was interested in ordering from them for the first time. I was trying to order for myself, my husband, and our son, and wasn't sure about the portion sizes since I've never been there. The pastas come in "half sizes" and "full sizes" according to their menu, so I called and asked a very simple question: "Do you know if the full size pasta is more of a 1 person dish, or a shared dish?" and the girl who answered the phone sighed and mumbled, "I dunno." She didn't follow up with any other helpful information. It was such a strange response and incredibly bad customer service. A better approach could have been something like, "The full size is good for one person, and the half size is a nice side dish," or "The full size can be shared by two adults if they also share a salad or something else," etc. I could go on with a dozen better responses than a grumbled "I dunno." It's really not hard to be kind, helpful, and polite. If that's the care they put into their customer service, then I don't have a lot of confidence in their food. read more

I went on Sunday for an early dinner. We ordered pizza and soup. The slices of cheese pizza were pretty good and I would definetly go back for more. I was glad to see they gave us slices off the fresh pie, and not the old dried-out looking one below, without even asking! I'm sorry to say the butternut squash soup was not good at all. After we tasted it, it simply went uneaten. It tasted like some weird, very sweet, thick chicken soup. The other major problem was at the register. I realise they have only been open a short time but the register was a backed-up mess. We stood waiting to pay for a long time. Our dinner was sitting on the table, going cool while we waited some more. Finally, we just sat down to eat and paid before we left. By that time, the soup was on the cool side of room temperature and the pizza was on the warmish side. I am not a fan of food being reheated in a microwave so we decided against anything they had in the trays behind the glass. I will go back, like I said, for more pizza. It's really good! We called and asked for Deep Dish Pizza with pepperoni and the response was no, that's it's no, then when questioned she replied with we are a Kosher restaurant. We then asked what we could get is cheese so again we said can we get a deep dish cheese pizza. We then ordered Cesar salad and the reply was no, no salad on weekends. At this point we should of just said thanks but no thanks. We picked up our thin crust cheese pizza not deep dish and will never return. I give them a 1 star for answering the phone. read more

If you are looking for somewhere to eat with the absolute worst service across 4 continents EJ's is the place for you. RUDE SERVICE IS NEVER A SMART BUSINESS PLAN GUYS!!! The one younger girl behind the counter is short tempered. And the older cashier (mid 30's) is so lost to the concept of service. I mean I don't usually go after people for the kind of job someone has but come on. Lady, you work as a cashier in a Kosher pizza restaurant. Drop the attitude. We were talking to a family at a table next to us who was telling us that EJ's used to have a very friendly staff and manager but that lately it's changed and NOT for the better. We were talking about how bad the service was from that woman. The attitude and lack of basic customer service she has is STUNNING!! The tall pizza chef was making a new pie and we asked him for some slices from that pie when it was done. He was great and said of course. We sat down expecting it to take a good 10 minutes because he had just put it in. A minute later, maybe less, our table beeper went off. I thought it was really fast. When I came up to get our food and saw the pizza they gave us I was confused. This was not that new pie that was still in the oven. This was from something that looked like it had been sitting out for a few days. I asked her if this was from the new pie that the chef put it and she said yes with the most condescending attitude. I tried to be polite and asked her how that's possible, since we were ordering less than 2 minutes and the chef had just put the pie in the oven and said it would take 10 minutes. I also pointed out that the pizza she had given us was clearly NOT fresh from the oven. She shot back in a very confrontational way like she was in a bad mood that we give our slices in order and you get what you get, NO SPECIAL REQUESTS is what I believe she snapped at me. They were not busy, there were 2 small tables eating in the main room and my friend and I were going to sit in the back where 1 other family was sitting eating. There was an older nice lady behind us in line who heard this womans response and told me quietly that the older staff was much better and how she used to call in and order cookies for her grandchildren but that lately the service has gone down hill. While helping another customer with a salad she was almost yelling at them and telling them how she had other things to do and was rushing them. I have never been to a restaurant, not even a simple pizza shop with such lousy service. Even the other tables were talking about her. Why is it that kosher restaurants always feel like they can treat people like scum?? This lady works as a cashier in a pizza shop and is giving customers an attitude?? She ruined our entire experience there and I will be sure NOT to give them any more of my money or business. If you can't treat your own customers with respect, I for one will NOT continue to support such a place. Talking down to a customer who asked for something is WRONG and for some reason the Kosher places are the worst. And this woman (mid 30's, average height around 5'7" and shorter black hair) was just horrible. The food was good, but we (as well as the other people we were eating near) were so disgusted by the way this woman treated people that I wasn't even paying attention to the food. And NO food is that good to go back and be treated like that again. If a person like that works there, it's clear they have no interest in keeping their customers and no interest in practicing customer service. New manager, a complete fool. The place was very busy and there were a few girls helping customers and doing everything. The new manager was standing there watching from behind the counter with her arms crossed. Meanwhile everyone else was running around like crazy. A customer asked her if he could order a salad (I guess he saw a worker behind the counter not doing anything and thought she could take him). She said she doesn't really make salads. Then she stopped one of the girls and asked her what she was doing. The poor girl looked at her like she was kiddjng. The manager asked her if she could make a salad. The girl told the manager she was doing way too much and would make it when she finished with the people she was helping. The manager then walked out from behind the counter, sat down and went on to her computer. How does a manager of a restaurant not know how to make a salad??? She seemed so lost and with a line of customers she was so flustered till she just walked out and sat down while everyone was running around like crazy. Very funny. read more

I live in California. I called EJ's and asked if they deliver. The answer was no. I asked about getting a cab, which evoked curiosity. I explained my sister-in-law was having chemo that day and her family needed a meal. He thought, then offered to make the delivery, requesting that it be delivered before the height of their rush. I was amazed at his compassion. The meal, pizza with special grilled vegetables (chemo patients cannot eat raw vegetables), soup, and a pasta dish was reported to be delicious! I ordered garlic knots and eggplant parmesan. The garlic knots were barely edible but the eggplant parmesan was inedible, the first bite tasted freezer burned and the second tasted like a tablespoon of salt (and I'm not usually a picky eater). My husband ordered a salad and a vegetable stromboli, the salad was ok but when the Stromboli came it had no vegetables in it, when he asked about it the woman behind the counter was completely unhelpful and just kept saying things like "I didn't make it" and "I don't know if there are vegetables in it or not" (there were clearly no vegetables . In the end we just ended up leaving after giving them back the cheese stromboli and throwing away the eggplant parmesan. I don't plan on going back. read more

Delicious! I had the grilled salmon with a side of grilled veggies and pasta primeva. My dinner also came with a choice of soup or salad. I choose the French Onion soup. My daughter had mac and cheese and slice of cheese pizza. My partner had eggplant parmigiana and a slice of pizza. We all drank sodas. The pasta pimevera was excellent. The veggies were still fresh and bright green but had been cooked. The sauce clung to the noodles and was not made with too much cream, but instead had body because it was cheesy. The Mac and Cheese was outstanding! Dense thick white cheese clung to the noodles but did not over power. The pizza was reported to be a tad on the sweet side, but very NY pizza like and good. The grilled veggies were tender, juicy and carmelized, but not overcooked. Perfect. The French Onion soup was dense and full of onions. Shredded cheese was served on top and there was no bread (or croutons as another poster reported) but so thick that with some bread it would make a meal all on its own. The eggplant was reported to be outstanding if a bit on the acidy and bready side. The fish was grilled to perfection but since the restaurant has a lot of the food pre-made and reheats your order in a microwave the fish was served room temperature so that the grilled veggies and pasta were not overcooked. Next time I will know to tell them to re-heat the pasta and fish on separate plates. But this is a minor problem and one that I am sure they will have worked out soon. This place serves average New York style pizza. You can't really tell that it's kosher (other than the lack of sausage and pepperoni pies), but that's really the best thing that I can say about it. As a Jew-turned-atheist, the kashrut status of a restaurant does not earn it points from me, but from prior experiences, I think this is pretty decent for kosher food, and is reasonably priced (unlike the egregious Taboun down the street). For the less-observant among us, EJ's a serviceable option if you're in Skokie and craving a slice of thin-crust for a late-ish night snack and don't feel like driving to Gigio's in Evanston. read more

My coworker took me here for a salad lunch and I've been hooked ever since. This is where I go for a big salad for lunch or dinner. I just love that you choose what you want from a great selection of ingredients (and they pile it on). Then they will toss it for you with your favorite dressing. The place is not much to look at. But it's a pizza joint. So what. You aren't there for the pomp and circumstance. But when you are hungry, it fits the bill. The pizza is as good as Kosher gets. Plain or with veggies (which is my favorite), you can't go wrong. One size fits all. So don't fret over a sm, med, or lg. It is what it is. Which makes it much easier to order. And the Garlic Knots are "heaven in little bites!" Just enough flavor. Not too much grease. Just a little hint of pizza without all the cheese. Dip it into some sauce and you are satisfied. Partner it with one of their AMAZING fresh made salads from their large salad bar and "voila" , lunch is served! We don't go here anymore. Sure, the food is good, and you can actually buy pizza by the slice, but... Aside from the floor being so greasy it's slippery, they don't believe that construction dust gets from the dining area across the counter into the cooking area, so they never put up a curtain while doing some very dusty construction. My family and I have eaten at EJ's many times over the years and the service is always the same - bad. It doesn't matter if you are part of a large crowd of about a dozen or just three of you. For some reason they are incapable of bringing out the entire order at the same time. For the larger groups, by the time the last of the food has arrived (after us asking for the rest of it over and over), the first person has finished their meal. Last Sunday only three of us ate there. First they brought out my grandson's mac and cheese, Shortly thereafter it was my husband's calzone. But where was my pita sandwich? The cashier didn't care and the gentleman I talked to said it would be soon. When I asked why the order wasn't all together, he said because different people make different things. WHAT? What does THAT mean? Every other restaurant in the world can send out the entire order together, but not EJ's. It was a good ten minutes after the mac and cheese arrived until I finally got my sandwich after asking at the counter for it several times. Yes, EJ's is a kosher restaurant and I feel that they treat their customers like they know they HAVE to eat there. Well guess what EJ's! I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on! read more
