We recently had a furnace and water heater installed by Edwin Stipe and, based on this installation, I would never recommend them to anyone. Here's the story: Several years ago, Edwin Stipe replaced our A/C. We were happy with the install, and happy with the technicians who have been inspecting the unit as part of the service plan. This is why we chose Edwin Stipe for the furnace and water heater install. Tim Fleischood of Edwin Stipe came to our house and made recommendations for the work. It sounded reasonable, and based on past work, we went ahead with the job. One of the problems I had with the old furnace was the filter was located inside the furnace and it was always collapsing. Tim said no one installed the filter in the furnace anymore, and promised it would be on the outside in the ductwork. Installation day came. The workers were friendly and respectful of our property, donning booties to keep the floor clean as the brought equipment and tools in and out of the house. This is where the positives end. When the installation was complete, I discovered the filter was installed inside the furnace, just like Tim said it would NOT be. The workers said it would be OK and the filter would not collapse. I grudgingly said OK, and they left. When they left, they said someone would contact me for the permit inspections. The A/C was running and after a couple of hours I decided to check out the filter. I had to remove 4 or 5 sheet metal screws to access the filter (ridiculous!) and the filter was indeed collapsing. Looking at the installation, I noticed, among other things, the gas to the furnace was off. WTH? Clearly the furnace was never tested, and no one said anything about returning any time to turn on the gas or testing the furnace! There were also massive air leaks in the duct work where they had installed a transition piece for the new furnace. I contacted Tim, explained my frustration, and he said they would return. The same tech who did the installation returned (I hope he never returns again). He told me (believe it or not), it doesn't matter if there are air leaks because its in the house. What?? He had absolutely no answer as to why the gas was left off and asked if I wanted the furnace tested. Uh, yeah! The tech turned on the gas and ran the furnace for about 30 seconds. He cut a very jagged hole in the side of the ductwork, mutilated a filter because it didn't fit, and cut a piece of exhaust flue in half, straightened it out, and screwed it over the filter. I was livid! It was the worst hack job I've ever seen. I contacted Tim (yet again) and sent him a picture of what was done. He promised that someone would come out fix everything. A few days later, another installation team came out and installed a proper filter holder. They left and I thought all was good. After a month and a half, I contacted Edwin Stipe to ask if a permit was applied for, because no one had contacted me for an inspection. They said they had mailed the permit information to me and I would have to contact the township for the inspection. OK, but it would have been nice if they had told me that in the beginning! Well, today were the inspections, one for electrical, one for mechanical. The electrical inspector noted that the top of the 2 foot conduit was not supported and it should be. He said it was sloppy work and he would talk to the installer. He didn't fail it, since I said I'd support the conduit. The mechanical inspector noted that the exhaust for the water heater should have a minimum of 3 screws equally spaced at each exhaust joint. Of four joints, only one had enough screws holding it together. He gave me the option of him failing the inspection or I could add screws. I promised to add screws. As much as I would have wanted Edwin Stipe to return and complete the job to the point it could pass inspection, I really didn't want to schedule them to come out yet another time, and have to reschedule the inspection. Plus, I'm not really sure they would have done it correctly. So, zero communication, three visits to complete the installation, sloppy work, and an installation I had to complete in order to pass inspection. Would I recommend Edwin Stipe? Do Not Recomens! My wife and used Edwin Stipe for a/c and heating needs. We signed up for the service plan to have it checked once a year to service our system and make sure everything is working correctly. The service man came out and stated we needed a new upstairs heating and a/c unit. We just had the blower replaced three years prior. The gentleman told us the unit is getting ready to expire and he recommended a new a/c and heating unit at the cost of $16,000 to $20,000. We got a second opinion. Thank God we did. The unit is working fine. The gentleman that came out said there was a wire that powered up the unit was very loose and could cause the system to eventually not work. He repaired the connection. To date, we have had no issues with either one of the a/c or heating units. Note: the gentleman that came out to service our units were highly recruited by Edwin Stipe to work for them. People, beware of the scams that Edwin Stipe uses in increase their new unit installs to increase there total sales for the year! read more

Save your money, these guys aren't worth the money! The actual repair men are great, but the management is beyond poor. It's obvious they have no idea how to run a business or support their customers. Paying for a service contract and they can't come to fix the heat because they have only one service guy working nights. They can't send him on more than three calls a day and he's already hit his limit. So now my family is supposed to sit in the cold until "sometime tomorrow afternoon" when it's 10 degrees outside. AVOID!!!!!!! I saved myself $9.8k by NOT using them!!!! My rental unit heat wasn't working. The air was blowing, but it wasn't warming. I called Edwin Stipe and they quoted me $2,500 to replace the heat exchanger and blower switch. Then they called me back about 20 minutes later and said the parts were no longer made, so they would need to replace the entire unit for $10,000. I told them I wanted to think on it fit a few minutes. They called me back a few minutes later saying they "found a coupon for $500 off on their desk". Clearly lots of sales tactics going on here. I got a second company to take a look and for an easy $250 they replaced the blower switch the next day and the heat is fully operational. And just for fun, I had that company quote me a brand new system to see how the pricing would compare and it was $5k -$6k depending on which unit I wanted. My rental property had no heat blowing out of the vents. Inside temp was 56 degrees. So I did a google search, called and left messages for 5 companies, then hired the first two companies that returned my call. Actually, only 2 companies returned my call. Edwin Stipe was first to call. Their Tech came out and diagnosed that my "older" system needed an entire replacement. That Tech dispatched a second person to arrive later that afternoon to work up the $14,500 estimate that was presented to me later that night. Luckily, right after setting Edwin Stipe's appointment earlier in the day, a second HVAC company responded to my voicemail. I advised them I had already made an appointment prior to them calling back. But after the total replacement quote I figured I'd call the second company back to get another opinion. The cost for each tech to come out was $99, so I'm $198 in expenses so far, but the second tech was able to fix my heater with a new $42 thermostat. Shame on you, Edwin Stipe. Conduct an honest business and train your employees better, and then hold them accountable. read more

Had an issue with a job performed and reached out to speak with a general manager specifically asking the heating manager not to contact me as the issue was in part with his recommendations and feeling taken advantage of. Not only did he contact me but proceeded to treat me horribly and then after hanging up CALLED MY WIFE. This is not okay. I reached out again to speak with a general manager or owner. Was contacted by both. I was assured multiple times there is absolutely no way their technicians made a mistake and there was nothing they would be able to do to help resolve this situation. The initial contact was polite and they responded within the timeframe promised. The work was completed is short order and to satisfactory standards. Their pricing is within the market going rate for services in this area, so there aren't any savings involved in using them, though I'm not sure there aren't discounts they run on occasion. Providing me with information on savings is the premium that is my fifth star is such circumstances. Providing me with good services, at going rates, within the time frame promised gets a solid four. read more

About two months ago. I got a phone call from a woman at Edwin Stype asking if I would like to have my central air conditioning unit checked and cleaned before the season. They were running a special for $59. My system ran perfectly fine the entire summer before, but I thought this was a good deal to get the system checked to make sure there were no problems. So the appointment was made and the technician came on April 24th to check the system. Because it has been so cold and rainy, we did not turn our system on until last night. Today, there is water dripping from the plaster ceiling in my bedroom (the system is in the attic right above it), and there are water bubbles in the paint of my wall below where the crack and dripping water is. I called them to find out about having someone come and see what's wrong and they tell me it will be $200 for them to come out and then additional cost to fix the problem. They were the last people to touch the system before we used it and I told them I don't understand why I would have to pay that charge if they serviced it. At this point, it sounds extremely suspect that they called me for this appointment, they were the last ones to do anything with it before it was used, but they are not going to stand by their inspection and charge me over $200 for a system that worked perfectly fine before they touched it. Now I have a crack and water coming into my bedroom, ruined paint on the walls with wet plaster behind it, and a system that will obviously be serviced elsewhere. Also, cost me less than what E.S. was going to charge me JUST for the technition to show up. UPDATE: Another company came out to find out what was wrong with my system. The water trap in the attic part of the system was bone dry. Should have been caught by the maintenance check up and wasn't. The outdoor part of the system had the could completely clogged with dirt and debris. Again, should have been checked and cleaned up with the maintenance check up and wasn't. UPDATE: Edwin Stipe has stood by their work and made this situation right. After this incident, another technician came to the house, took pictures of the damage and reviewed the entire system. He agreed that the problem was somehow overlooked during inspection and made a report at the following staff meeting. It was determined that they would have someone repair the ceiling and walls from the water damage and reimburse me the money I put out to have the issue fixed then the first technician did not respond to my call and did not give us the full information regarding the company policy on payments and the source of the issue. This may have taken this entire situation in a much better direction. I am happy with how Edwin Stipe has handled this situation but wish it never had to come to this. read more

This is my second review of Edwin Stipe. We have used them to service our furnaces and air conditioners for the last few years. The have also done some minor plumbling for us. I have always been happy with there work. However our ac and furnace needed to be replaced and I chose Edwin Stipe for the job and I am very disappointed. If you saw my first review, they actually installed the wrong unit that was too small for my house. They discovered the error and had to come back and put the correct unit in. This unit was not cooling a part of the house as it was supose to. I called and they sent a service man over. He informed that the ducting was not correctly installed and they would have to schedule someone to come and make the repairs. A week later, I got a call from them that they would need to schedule the repair. This was a 12K job that was handled very poorly. We are now up to 5 visits to get the unit installed and working correctly. I don't intend on using them again. I would not recommend them for big jobs such as this. read more

In the end, she was able to convince me to work out a plan with Edwin Stipe. I've changed my rating from 1 star to 3 stars and will update it accordingly after the work is performed. 6/20/18 - 1 Star - Called me the day before coming to perform major work to confirm my appointment. Called me about an hour later to cancel because, in so many words, had no idea that I was on the schedule. The earliest date they could reschedule was two weeks away. It's not even worth getting into how much this impacts me, except that it does and it's a huge issue. Unacceptable. read more

Really appreciate having such a responsive, reasonably-priced plumber in the neighborhood. I've had Edwin Stipe out twice in the past six months or so for different problems. You know the wrenching feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you get when you need to call a contractor but have no idea or frame of reference on what to expect for pricing? Well, Edwin Stipe put my mind at ease. First, they were able to come out the same day, which seems to be more of a rarity these days. Second, they were clear on the phone that there would be a $79 service charge for coming out. This is understandable, so that they aren't having their plumbers diagnosing problems all day only to have customers say, "Nah..." So I expected to pay the $79 plus whatever additional charges might be incurred for the work. My problem turned out to be a very minor problem (minor for them...it would've taken a lot more brainpower for me to figure it out). In light of this, the plumber said he didn't want to charge me more than the $79. That's the way to make a long-term customer! read more

The work done by Edwin Stipe is great but the pricing for small jobs is unreasonable. Replacement of the foam sleeve on the AC compressor line was $150 ($89 for coming to my home and then $60 for the $10 part and 5 minutes labor). Originally, the bill was $210 but I disputed the bill and negotiated it down. I am just writing this so folks are aware. In the end, I should have researched this more as a DIY project. read more

I contacted Edwin Stipe to fix a running toilet in a rental property several months ago. They first charged me an exorbitant amount for the job, then agreed to charge only the service fee because it was what was supposed to be a simple repair- replacement of a flush valve. However, this repair turned out to be too complicated for the two plumbers who were sent out to the house, as my water bills never returned to normal. I assumed it was a different problem. I had another (competent) plumber come out to diagnose and repair the problem and sure enough it was the same valve in the same toilet that was supposed to have been fixed. I am convinced that the plumbers from Edwin Stipe did not do any actual work at the house. read more

Edwin Stipe was quick to respond to a call for a leak in the ceiling. However they charged $1200 for replacing a T section of PVC piping (2 hour work) which sounds way too much for the work involved in retrospective. I feel dumb I did not take the time to gather other estimates at the time and fell into the trap of 'we can fix the problem right now'. The quality of the work was surely there, but I still feel that Edwin Stipe took advantage of the situation and charged me way more than what other plumbers would have charged for the same job. Learnt my lesson the hard way, and will certainly not call them again in the future.... read more

What henry S fails to mention in his comments to my initial review is the following: Between the installation and the call in 2010 he references, I had at least 10 service calls for various issues. Plus factory reps, and finally the other company because his technicians were clueless as what to do next. He also fails to mention that this is a gas furnace, and the back up to my heat pump, a gas furnace being used consistently only needs to be cleaned every two years, and we had two mild winters. I am not disputing that I probably should have had it looked at once between the last time they were here and when this issue happened, I had that conversation with the GM and he agreed with me. BUT, that does not negate the fact that how the venting was run and the way the condensate was being collected was not installed correctly to begin with. As soon as the other technician walked in and looked at the unit, he made that comment. Had it been done the right way, I would not have had the "acid water from combustion" running through the furnace. And when you eliminate that, you eliminate the entire issue that caused it to rot out. Henry is correct, I do have the pictures he mentioned, not only showing how the unit rotted out but also how the venting and the condensate were set up. So if any qualified HVAC technicians or dealers want to see them and make a comment as to what was done and how it was the source of the issue , please by all means. And contrary to his claim that no one looked at the unit, I had the doors off multiple times because they taped down the door switch when they installed it so something would continue to run. If my home lost power I had to start taking off the doors and flipping switches to try and "reset" the unit. You don't think if I noticed it rusting I wouldn't have called?? So while the easy answer is to blame the customer, the bottom line is that it wasn't done right to begin with. Had Henry done the right thing and at least showed that he cared a little bit and admitted that there was some fault on their end by contributing something to the new furnace, I would have been satisfied. Rather he chose to wash his hands of it, and as I said I would, after being strung along for 7 weeks with promises that something would be done, I vow to let everyone I know that they should not do business with this company. read more

I can't say enough positive remarks regarding the service we had from all of the staff we dealt with at Edwin Stipe from the day the first call was made, follow ups, sales, installation, office staff. When it was time for our third call regarding our furnace, we knew that we would immediately call Edwin Stipe. I knew that I could trust them and that they wouldn't force a repair that we weren't ready for. If the need arises in the future we know that we will call Edwin Stipe without hesitation. I contacted Edwin Stipe to take a look at my HVAC unit because my house wasn't cooling. Although I filled out the online form on their website, I never heard from them. After a few days of waiting, I gave them a call and an appointment was scheduled. The guy arrived promptly and asked me a few questions about the problem. Without even turning on the system (I shut the power off a few days earlier), he determined that the problem was the fan on the outdoor condenser unit. Without taking anything apart and even trying to fix things, he immediately determined that the fan motor needed to be replaced. Here is where this company left a very bad taste in my mouth. After about 15 minutes, he gets off the phone and tells me that the replacement motor is going to cost $800. That's right, $800. He says I can pay half now and the other half upon completion. I think about it for a few minutes and decide that I'll go ahead. I give him my card and while he's getting things ready, I look up the part number for the fan motor to see how much it costs. The motor that Edwin Stipe was going to sell me for $800 sells brand new online for $165 with free shipping. I showed this to the repair guy and asked him how they can charge $800 for something that sells for $165 and he told me that he didn't set the prices..and that the company has to pay for the vehicle, gas, uniforms, etc..all this BS. He said he'd call the office and see if they could lower the price..after about 5 minutes, he said they'd lower by $75 and also replace the capacitor, which according to him, sells for like $200. A quick search online revealed that HVAC capacitors sell for $20. In the end, I politely declined and told him that I'd buy the motor myself and replace it myself. I still got charged $214 for the dispatch and diagnostic. It's a shame that this company tried to swindle me by charging so much. I understand that businesses need to make a profit from the parts they purchase and resell, but $800 was a little out of control. I would have gladly paid something extra, but not $800 extra. Never. In the end, I ended up taking the fan and motor apart and got it loose by jiggling it a little bit. If they had taken the time to actually try to repair the problem instead of just trying to sell me an overpriced replacement part, I would have written a different review. Now because of this one negative experience, I will never even consider contacting this company for any work on my home. I also won't recommend them to my friends and family. read more

Have used Edwin Stipe for as long as I've lived in Easton. Their technicians are first class and seem to know what they are doing. About 7 + years ago, we purchased a new heating system from them which has malfunctioned since day 1. They came and tried everything to fix it but nothing really worked. We asked for a replacement and they kept telling us they could fix it. Well, here it is many years later and it is still turning off, for no good reason. The last time it shut down for no good reason was a week ago, while we were on vacation, and upon returning home, the heater was not working. No problem, we just had to reset it. We were fortunate that the pipes did not freeze while we were away. We called Stipe, because we pay for their monthly contract, and in the past they asked that we let them know of any issues with the heater. We have never been charged in the past for them to come and check it out, especially since they have never really been able to fix this lemon of a heater and keep it from shutting off whenever it feels like it. We know how to reset it and were able to get it working again. This last week, they charged us a dispatch fee of $59 plus a minor diagnostic fee of $121 for less than an hour spent "diagnosing the system". I asked why the charges since we pay a monthly fee, they said that the monthly fee only covers the yearly cleaning. As I said before, the technicians are good, however, we were never able to get Stipe to stand behind the heater they sold us which continues to shut down at least 2-3 times per winter season. My recommendation is that you do not purchase a Peerless heater! read more

I had a tech here for 15min and was charged another fee on top of the almost $100.00 for diagnostic. The price of any work should be discussed before they perform it. Edwin Stipe cleaned my oil burner last year and treated me well. When they proactively called me to setup a new appointment, I thought it strange, but gladly agreed. They even called me the business day before to make absolutely sure that I would be at home and if the appointment was still a go. When the repairman hadn't showed up 1 and a half hours late, I decided to call and see if anything was the matter. Not only did Edwin Stipe apparently stop servicing Oil Burners, the scheduling person also completely forgot to call me to cancel the appointment. I was upset because I had taken a vacation day from my job to be home for the furnace cleaning, only to be told : " We don't do that anymore. Oops. I forgot to call you.". I was extremely annoyed that they had wanted my business so bad, but completely dropped the ball. I should send them a Bill for my hourly rate, times 8 hours just to prove a point.
