Dr. Edward Barton is wonderful! From the moment I met him, I knew he would be able to help me. He is not your typical doctor who spends a few minutes with you and then sends you on your way with a prescription in hand for the pharmacy. No, he works in quite the contrary way. He looks at all your tests/records, listens to your concerns, looks at your overall health and then thinks outside the box to find the solution to your specific needs...how refreshing! After having been with a doctor from another practice who did none of that and put me on very strong drugs that had me spiraling downward, Dr. Barton stepped in and course-corrected. I thought Dr. Barton was good based on the tests he gave to me as a result of my first appointment... but after I saw Dr. Barton for a follow up appointment regarding some new symptoms... he never examined me. I sat across from him at his desk and he told me what is happening to me "sometimes goes away, sometimes it doesn't." Guess what... the problem got worse. He also tried referring me to a guy named Boris who doesn't take insurance and only takes cash. I found a better Neurologist who actually ran a litany of tests on me and spent a lot of time listening to me. Thanks to this new doctor, I'm going down a path to get answers and not being told to get a massage from Boris. What a lovely experience it was to have an appointment with Dr. Barton. My Functional MD sent me to him because I have ever increasing essential tremor and I am having increased difficulty with balance. We started with neuopathy in my feet in his office, and he showed me how there were many different kinds of nerves in my feet. The one I am having the most trouble with was feeling vibration. We then had a long conversation about essential tremor. The conversation was enlightening on both subjects and most enjoyable. In the end, he did not prescribe any additional medications. Thank goodness. He recommended that I visit a Medical massuse that had been trained in Russia and had all the scientific research behind his technique. Russia just didn't want to share their scientific data with the world. One visit with Boris Prilutsky and there was a noticeable improvement in my tremor. What a find. Its such a pleasure to see a MD, an in this case a neurologist who didn't hear my first complaint and catch the pill that came down the shoot. I can't wait to share this appointment with my own Functional MD next week at our appointment. If you want sound wise advice, Dr. Barton is the right neurologist to see. I was actually a little disappointed when I was leaving his office that there was no reason for me to return. (at least at this point in time, if I need to see him for a future issue I will do it in a flash.) It was an amazing experience and I am getting very good results from his advice. Dr. Barton has that perfect balance of professionalism and personal empathy. He makes an effort to be medically specific and detailed while also being relatable and very easy to talk to. I had a bad concussion and was having cognitive difficulties. Dr. Barton explained what was going on in terms appropriate for my understanding and patiently answered all of my questions. Wow! The yelp reviews do not lie. The only downside is there is a long wait to see him bc he's that good. To be honest I hesitate to write this knowing this will probably make him even busier and thus that much harder to see. However I also know it's not easy to find good doctors and so for those that are looking for a neurologist Dr. Barton is your man. He did the nerve study test on me that I read horrible experiences about and let me tell you mine was nothing like that. No pain, super small discomfort if any, and quick. I would strongly suggest to fax back your paperwork and any additional labs prior to your appointment. Unlike some doctors who do not review your records until they see you, Dr. Barton does take a look beforehand which is nice bc then it makes your appointment more efficient. Dr. Barton did a great job at making the right call for me. I love his approach in not going down a road of pharmaceuticals for treatment if perhaps other pathways may be taken. He did recommend me to seek alternative routes as all of my neurological tests were 100% healthy and I was still having symptoms. Turns out I had intercranial pressure due to build up of cranial fluid because the drainage system in my neck was badly blocked up due to many many years of hard labor, car accident, and stress in general. After one visit with where he suggested I go, my symptoms were 80% improved INSTANTLY. As far as I'm concerned that's a miracle, and it takes a real doctor to look at a problem for what it is, and have someone else take a look at more localized areas that can easily be affecting the brain.... like your NECK!! Dr. Barton is a true professional. For years I have struggled with headaches/facial pain, to the degree of sometimes debilitating my ability to function socially. Doctors had described my condition as being "in my head" or would lazily diagnose me with anxiety. Dr. Barton took my information seriously, and described a multitude of possible issues AND solutions. While calmly and patiently answering my questions, Dr. Barton was kind enough to reassure me that my symptoms were nothing to be afraid of, while also recommending/setting up an MRI and EEG to make sure that there were no structural issues. Personally, Dr. Barton helped put me on the path to change my life. Thanks to his guidance and direction, I rarely feel the headaches that plagued me for years. His kindness and ability to care is exemplified in this short story: Following our first meeting, Dr. Barton recommended that I receive an EEG. I notified him that my insurance was expiring in a few days, and that I would no longer be able to afford the medical treatment he was suggesting I follow. Without hesitation, Dr. Barton assured me that I would be able to fit an EEG into the schedule, walking me to the front desk and speaking with the scheduling department to ensure I was seen in a timely manner. I am afraid to give my opinion because the reviews are being monitored by the staff and doctor. I left a three star review so he wanted to compensate with me and wanted a five star if he gave me a referral, however I was never referred or helped until I had to call few times and ask. (This was a few months ago) It upset me because I was not being heard and just felt like a statistic. Now my condition has been manifesting. Doctor also thought I had hemifacial spasm, but didn't do testing and just recommended botox. But he did not hear me out on the other symptoms. My whole face feels tight and stiff on all sides and is numb. I wanted to explain this but he kept saying hemifacial spasm and left to his office space. I felt brushed off. I had a lot of hope, but was crushed. As of today I just wish that I was heard then maybe there was a better direction. read more

Where do I start, I am so upset with my visit to see Dr Barton, I suffer from Trigeminal Neuralgia and was hoping to find a caring neurologist to help me with me pain. I searched and found Dr. barton, he had very good reviews on Yelp and Health Grades. I have never felt so dismissed and taken advantage of. I show up early for my appointment. The Doctor calls me in to his office not and exam room, his office, I am there for a first time consultation. He asks me what I am there for. I start to explain and he keeps cutting me off when I try to explain my issue. He was very dismissive and really didn't want hear my history. He tells me about a Radiation procedure they do downstairs and that he is going to refer me there. Doesn't even give me options regarding medication ( I have been on medication for this condition for 8 years and was looking to try something new due to this medication wasn't working as well any longer). He then gives me a half ass neuro exam in his office. Then he proceeds to tell me about a massage therapist Boris who could help me. He walks me across the hall to another office and has the person in there give me a slip of paper for Boris and a referral to the radiation place. I asked if wanted to see me again, he said, no, WTF. He spent a total of 7 minutes with me. When I get home and see the referral it is blank to the Radiation place. (OMG). I'm waiting see what he charges my insurance and see what billing codes he uses, then I will update my review. Please stay far away from this man, he just wants money. read more

Again, suffering from trigeminal neuralgia is not fun by any means, but seeing someone that deeply care about your case can change a lot of things. I don't think Dr Barton is very thorough at all. I saw him several times when I was having serious neurological issues. The workup was incredibly absent of any deeper digging, probing for disorders, etc. I ended up getting diagnosed with an autoimmune neurological condition after other doctors took the time to do more than a standard MRI EEG. By the way - it takes months between appointments! What the hell? Good for everyone who had good results with Barton but in my case it was extremely damaging. He also has an ego complex, which is something I see a lot of doctors fall victim to. When you think you have all the answers, how can you find the rarer or more difficult to diagnose conditions? PASS. - - Edit: Just responding to Dr Barton. Look, obviously you do a great job for most of your patients. That's evident by all of your glowing reviews. I happened to be someone who slipped through the cracks. Just remember that for many people, you are their only hope at any given time. It takes weeks/months to get in for an appointment, get medical records together, drive to Pasadena, - all the while in the field of NEUROLOGY, many of us are dealing with a life altering/life ending ailment. You're their only hope for that period of time. People don't usually see multiple neurologists at a time. If they strike out with you, it's start all over - more waiting, more suffering. When they enter your office and you're in autopilot and it's "eh, I don't really see anything wrong. Maybe try a cranial massage. Maybe another EEG" and see you later after 10 minutes, that can really destroy someone. Especially when there are SO MANY neurological disorders today from autoimmune encephalitis, paraneoplastic syndromes, neurological complications from infections, sick building syndrome, Lyme. I mean there's SO MANY possibilities to investigate, and you're getting paid SO WELL! Don't you owe it to your patients to do every last thing you can to save them, other than the standard MRI, EEG and whatever the American medical association taught in med school many years ago? Do you realize doctors tend to play a game of musical chairs, passing patients around because they aren't in the typical realm of what's obvious or easy to diagnose? I am sure your wait times have improved. This happened during a period where you were like on vacation several times last summer or something, and then booked out for months. Like I said, I got unlucky. But after months of appointments and tests, I was basically left down sh*t river without a paddle. My mom was even there for the last appointment, because she had flown across the country and knew something was seriously wrong. And she was trying to say "hey, somethings really wrong here," but not much was offered for any additional ideas, tests and we were basically rushed out of the office after 10/15 minutes. Regarding my yelp reviews: I don't enjoy writing Yelp reviews or do it for fun. I only write reviews if somewhere is EXCEPTIONALLY good, or if I had an exceptionally bad experience. Those are the only scenarios I am inspired to hop on here and make my feelings known. And regarding UCLA neurology and Dr Carl Orfuss, lol. That doctor is an absolute shnob, 80 years old and just the rudest neurologist ever. I had 1 appointment and never went back. Updated: Lots of fake 5 star reviews. Doctor your first review of 2018 is a one star. I've used this doctor for years. Called to refill a very necessary prescription that was denied because there's a policy you must see this doctor every year which is perfectly understandable. The problem I have is the way this office goes about this type of practice. I was never advised of this and I would gladly come to see the doctor if explained to myself differently or in a professional manner. Everyone has a different diagnosis for migraines and some can't wait a month to see a doctor so they can get paid for a doctor's visit. Treat people with empathy and respect and this will keep patients coming back. I was basically treated unprofessionally by staff and never offered any alternative. Would not return or recommend this office to anyone. This doctor probably spent a whole lot of time and money to build his practice and to have it get a bad review over staff is unfortunate. Doctor Barton the first lesson you get in med school is "Primum non nocere" is a Latin phrase that means "First do no harm". This office doesn't follow this Hippocratic oath. Read his response below because it speaks volumes about his character. This doctor speaks about "Foreign graduates"???? witch doctors with one-star reviews???? I've looked all over yelp and can't seem to find any foreign witch doctors that practice neurology. His staff called me and left a voicemail to refill my medication after this review went live. So, his response is inaccurate and misleading in regards to government principles and policies. In my initial one-star review I never questioned the expiration or validity of regulations. My issues where with your staff speaking to me in a condescending manner. The medication I've been on for decades isn't a controlled substance or a pain killer. I would understand not refilling a controlled substance without being seen first. However, I was given the option on making an appointment a month away and denied a refill without understanding my ongoing treatment or lack of empathy. I stand by my original 5-star review of the care I received from Doctor Barton himself. My issues are with his staff and their mannerisms. Went to Dr. Barton based on all these positive glorifying reviews on Yelp, waited 2 months in excruciating pain for a consultation that took only 15 minutes, not once did he ask me if I had any questions during the consultation, not thorough on explaining what was wrong or what options I had, and the cherry on top of my wonderful experience was when I had no idea that the consultation was over until I was asked to go to another room (thinking he's asking me to go to another room/area so he can do some tests) turns out he took me over his receptionist to book me for a nerve test that I had to wait for ANOTHER 2 months for an appointment! Office staff was nothing spectacular and his office doesn't even feel like a medical clinic setting. Made the biggest mistake going outside of my own network of physicians thinking I'm going to some great doctor. Turns out the joke was on me. Currently waiting to see a new neurologist. read more
