Crave a great Day's Inn or Motel 6? Keep going. A spacious resort with tennis courts and a huge pool. Don't get out of the car. Want to stay in a small, unassuming farm house in the middle of nowhere? If not, let me tell you exactly what you're missing. Once you enter this tiny (3 bedrooms!!) farmstead, you enter an absolutely magical world. The proprietors, Skip and Patty, are not just world class hosts -- they're world class people! Interested in everything, self-deprecating and witty, great fun, they fall all over themselves to make you welcome -- not as valued guests, but as valued friends. Patty can cook up a storm (breakfasts included), and my 4 day, 3 night stay here included savory omelets with fresh fixin's from the farm, and to-die-for blueberry pancakes. Boy oh boy can that woman cook. I arrived with a really bad back, and Skip came up with all sorts of fun and novel ideas to turn me back into a vertebrate. The rooms were simple but lovely, but the biggest surprise of all was the chemistry. Between Patty and Skip, a retired police lieutenant. Between them and their guests. Between the guests themselves. Think Tajikistan!! The other two sets of guests included a fun loving Indian from Calcutta who arrived by motorcycle with his mainland Chinese girlfriend (wife?) and a husband-wife team of Canadian scientists (the wife was a Vet specializing in wildlife, on a brief exchange program with nearby Cornell, and the husband a biologist, specializing in the study of Arctic mammals, filled with stories about wolverines, caribou and bears.). In the morning, I'd wake-up early and sit around talking with Patty and/or Skip. Then the other guests would tumble out of their rooms, and it would be one big party. At night, everyone would return from their day's adventures, laughter aplenty, and we'd sit around laughing and talking, until one by one we'd head to our rooms --with the luckiest guests heading back last, so that they'd have some additional face time with Skip and Patty. Need suggestions of what to do, where to go, where to eat? Count S&P in! Need a Chiropractor? They won't rest until they've found one and gotten you in. What a wonderful experience, which I hope to repeat in due course -- and hope that you will have the chance to share, too!

To keep it short and sweet-if you are traveling in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, be sure to check out The Herb Cottage Bed and Breakfast. While the area is known for it's wine tasting, I must add that the gorges and waterfalls In Montour Falls and Watkins Glen(2 minutes away)are truly something to behold, and not to be missed! You've never seen anything like them. After a day of doing either, I found this bed and breakfast with it's enchanting decor, and artisan made soap delicately scenting the house, to be such a relaxing place to come back to. The owner Carolsue is the warmest, most inviting innkeeper and will ensure you have a relaxing, well fed, informed, and most pleasant stay. Think of her as family, only family you REALLY want to visit. She also makes homemade popcorn for you at night. I found myself looking forward to it... Sigh... We stayed in The Sage Room, which seemed like it was out of my fantasies of an airy, Victorian dream-spacious, tidy, and oh so comfortable. It's not a ship but it's the kind of place you are welcome to come and go from. Or stay on "deck" that day. So comfy it's hard to mention all of them. Cozy corners in and out. Even a basket of blankets at the front door if you are chilled. The lights on all the exterior lines of this beautiful Victorian lead you up the hill to home after a dinner at a local restaurant. And your take-away (or home-prepared food) is welcome in the guest frig. Guests congregate on the porches, in the gazebo, in the spacious game room, library, jigsaw puzzle room, and on the lawns all day. So much comfy seating at all times. (I think there are over 100 chairs of all kinds in this inn.) Four more amenities that also stand out are the different coffees and snacks you are welcome to all day and night; the USB connections in all guest rooms; the puzzles, games and books to convince you to relax; and the automatic lights throughout the common rooms that stay on until 1 am. The cottage was immaculate, roomy, comfortable, with AC, wireless (it worked on my laptop), a hot tub (which my husband used--bad back), and many other ammenities. The inn keepers, Bea and Sterling, were gracious, friendly, funny, very knowledgeable about the area, and extremely helpful. Breakfast each morning was served at 9:00--juice, fruit bowl, coffee, fresh muffins/banana bread/blueberry scones, and a delicious entree such as oven baked french toast with apples and nuts/crepes with strawberries/yogurt fruit parfait, served in the main house in a lovely bright eating area with a beautiful view of the well kept lawn (recently, a doe and her two fawns walked right by the large windows). The location is about 15 minutes from Ithaca (great restaurants/Taughannock Falls, farmers market), about 25 minutes from Watkins Glen (falls, boat cruise on Lake Seneca), and about an hour from Corning (Corning Glass Museum). We also were very close to and rode through some beautiful wine country and had lunch one afternoon at the Thirsty Owl Winery and Bistro--amazing. If you are expecting a sterotypical B&B, this might not be your cup of tea, but we loved it. It was clean, comfortable, quiet, and homey. I herewith quote Sterling (the owner): "We are not quaint, charming, or historical," but I have to disagree--it was quaint and charming and we did get a lot of historical information from the owners. I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed. Great place to stay if your children are students at Cornell or Ithaca. They also have single rooms in the main house.

I've been to B&Bs before and I can assure you this is not what you expect from a Bed & Breakfast…read more First of all, the "decor" is stuck in 1980. There is nothing warm or inviting about it. You walk into an outdated paneled kitchen and living room and you immediately feel like you are in someone's home. It is not a welcomed feeling. There were no snacks offered, limited drinks (only pre-sweetened iced tea) and the breakfast was just acceptable at best (one pancake rolled up with jam inside). The bedrooms are upstairs (again - dark paneling) and it feels more like a rooming house than a B&B. The separate "cottage" is actually a mobile home unit. The "jacuzzi" is a very small, portable soft sided hot tub. I can't imagine how the other reviewer used her laptop because we had absolutely no service on our computer or I-phone. Nothing quaint or cozy anywhere - my suggestion is to spend a little more and stay elsewhere.

Only a 10 minute drive to Watkins Glen and 16 minutes from the festival, walking distance to wineries and breweries, and only 1 hour and 20 minutes from Rochester. Second, this place is gorgeous. The farm house is on eight acres of land and still has many of the historic early 19th century features and charm, but with modern amenities like new bathrooms and WiFi. Each room has so many period details and charming features. Third, it's got everything you need for your stay: firepit with lots of wood and marshmallow sticks, fully stocked kitchen with some dry goods, bathroom with a hairdryer and fluffy towels, lots of indoor and outdoor seating, and more! We were also greeted by an amazing selection of local snacks like cheese, meat, juice and more. Finally, it's a cozy place to relax and refresh. The beds (there are 5 of them, along with 3 bathrooms) are super comfy, there's AC to keep you cool, and the front porch gives you a view of the lake. Excited to visit again!
