I have to say that the coaching has a lot of value. I learned a lot about strange things that I've done with my voice, like forgetting to pronounce the D at the end of 'and'. I learned how to listen for plosives and mouth noise, and also how to improve my articulation. I love the way my demo came out at the end. Every staff member you meet is very nice and helpful and they make you feel welcome. It's really a positive environment. The equipment that they use in the studio is also top notch. The website has valuable resources for people starting out. You get access to their textbook, a script library where you can practice your reads, and a feedback forum. This feedback forum is where you can send your recordings and receive professional feedback for $30. You can request feedback on your voice, or even your audio setup (e.g. How do I sound with my new Mic?). I feel like that's totally worth the price. If you don't wish to pay the $30, you can also submit a recording to your peers for feedback. Also there's the monthly audition contests. It's a great tool for getting some practice with auditioning for jobs. If you plan to be a student with Edge, definitely take advantage of the resources available to you. I think my only issue are the webinars. They are really hit and miss. The home studio webinar was very helpful. It went into detail about the different mics you can use and their polar patterns, as well as different audio interfaces, the cost of the different equipment, etc. By the end of it, I had a very good idea of the equipment that I wanted to buy. In the group webinars, they are usually saturated with people and not everyone gets to have a go at reading. I recently took a couple of webinars on Audacity and Adobe Audition. In the audition webinar, the instructor had no control over the students and they kept interrupting with their own personal questions rather than let the instructor speak. I learned nothing, when what I really wanted to know is how to create presets for voice over in my DAW. As I switched to Reaper from Audacity, I found an amazing comprehensive set of videos from the YouTuber Boothjunkie. THAT is how a class on a DAW should run. Some of these webinars are better off as a package of recordings that you can access for far cheaper, though you may find better information on YouTube that's free. I think that most newbies starting out wish they were familiar with the business aspect of things. In the business webinar I attended, I did learn about having a client contact list and that I should have some invoicing software, but nothing specific was mentioned or recommended. I also hear that a lot of people use Source Connect, but I didn't learn about this at edge and I wish I had. For the price, the webinars could and should be far more detailed. There are 1-on-1 consultations that you can sign up for with regards to learning the business side of things. I imagine those are far more helpful, but they do cost money. They also do consultations on your home studio setup. I think there's some value there if you're just getting your equipment together and need an evaluation. read more

I did learn alot from my coach, but i had trained for a year before going to them. Alot of what was taught was just read, read, read. which i understand is a necessity with everything, practice, practice! But the demo program gives you a single file of 5 to 6 reads. They will break them up for another $200+. They charge for absolutely everything and can be very impersonal. read more

This "school", like many others is just a front for siphoning money from unsuspecting folks. # As I've never heard of them, I decided to pay for their "investigative class". Due to a Convenient glitch in their website, I was charged twice. Their site charged me for an EXPIRED class from April2022. I was trying to purchase a class from June2022, DURING June2022. # Right away, I sent an email describing the issue, and kindly asked for the difference to be returned. Not only did they Refuse to refund Any money, they Insisted on selling me something else. Never even admitting that it was ridiculous to keep money their system applied toward an expired class. A GLITCH. # AVOID this Fraud "school" at all costs. Am happy to share the entire unfortunate interaction with anyone taking legal action against them. I have it all in writing. read more

The best, plain and simple. Everyone else is a coach, but Edge is a school. I wish they'd been around when I started in the business, but their amazing and huge staff has been a part of my ongoing efforts to continue to improve my craft and expand my repertoire. Whenever I'm asked where to study, where to get a demo made, my answer has always been Edge. That is in no way a slight against Chuck Duran, J. Michael Collins or the countless other excellent coaches and producers out there. But if you're at the point where you're asking, Edge is always the answer. They have experts in every field, including many you're likely not aware of and every niche you can think of (and then some). I use the term "experts" lightly - look at their credentials. Spend an hour with them. Edge is a major force for good in modern voiceover, and it's hard to imagine anyone with voiceover aspirations not benefiting tremendously from them. There staff are brilliant at helping you home your brand and find your niche. Founder David Goldberg, the one non-voice actor on staff, is a coach of the highest caliber. If you take the class for $99.00, it's really more of an audition than a training session. But it's an audition you have to pay for. If you don't sound like you are marketable (for them, I assume), then they tell you so. If you want, you can try again with a 1 on 1 session, but that costs another $140.00. So, unless you have the kind of voice they are looking for, you may end up spending $239.00, without even taking a single lesson. Plus, if you do sign up, you will spend about $2000.00 (at least) for their training. If you are a beginner, it's probably better to take voice over training from a local VO studio or even a college before you pay a ton of money to Edge Studio. They are pricey, and there is no guarantee that you will ever get anywhere. read more

I just completed an introductory session with Edge, and it was far and above what I was expecting. John, the instructor was extremely experienced and knowledgeable, and really relaxed everyone to make them feel comfortable, especially those like me, a complete novice. I am expecting to sign up for their training, but it is a bit pricey for me. However, I am quite convinced that I will be able to get some work as a result of the training, so I'm pretty confident that that will offset the cost. I would have given five stars based on my experience so far, but I will give another review after my training is completed! read more

(My first review as an Elite Yelper!) I've heard from friends enough times that I have a good voice and should look into voice acting, so after googling a few places, I decided to give Edge Studio a try. It's located on the 10th floor and it's very clean and quiet when I walked in. The staff is extremely friendly and makes you feel welcomed as soon walk in. They have a 4 hour voice-over evaluation workshop that costs $127 (but I got it during a sale for $99), and you're with 9 other people. You go through techniques with your evaluator and ask them any questions you may have about the industry. My evaluator/instructor was Kristin Price. She was very nice, funny and very insightful. Any questions the group had she answered them no matter how insignificant they might have seemed, even encouraged us to not be shy to ask. Voice acting may SEEM easy, but trust- it's a LOT of hard work. After going through some mouth exercises that felt pretty damn silly (opening mouths WIDE and saying YAW YAW YAW YAW!!!) but were effective in loosing up the vocal pathways, we each read some practice scripts from commercials in different voices, diction & speed then took turns inside the recording booth. Mind you, in the booth we did a cold reading, so we had NO idea what voice to put on until she told us. I had to read a public service script about cutting funding from schools in an slightly miffed/angry parent voice. Used my "angry black woman" voice for that one. Then we each got to hear out finished product. I thought mine was pretty good. When everyone was done recording, we asked more questions and then set up a time for someone to call us so that we can go forward with setting up lessons if we wanted to pursue voice acting. You also get a personalized evaluation via email to let you know if they think you can actually make it in the industry. They're really honest with you and let you know what did well with & what you need to work on. Sample of mine: The Good: "The fact that you take direction well and were able to apply it to your reads will make directors love you! You had good cold readings, which is great because cold readings could be tough." The Not So Good: "You seemed too careful, so work on trusting yourself and your instincts. There was some mouth noise. This can be caused by a dry mouth so make sure you are hydrated. It was clear you were over-thinking. Allow yourself to trust your own instincts and relax into the copy." If you decide to pursue lessons, they take the money you paid for the evaluation and apply it to your first lesson. Cool right? It was a LOT of fun and those 4 hours went by so quickly. Before I realized it, we were all finished and it was time to go. I think this is something I'm going to pursue. I give 4.5 stars b/c I wish we could've gotten a copy of our practice read in the booth. That would've been great. read more

I just finished the 2-demo training package with Edge Studio. On the whole, my experience was very positive. Once you're accepted into the program, you can take the Level 1 webinars at your leisure, which is really nice. I've been a musical theater actor for many years, so some of the information in the classes wasn't new to me personally, but other stuff that gets you acquainted with voice over etiquette, setting rates, etc. was really useful and informative. I really want to single out one coach there that I think is just outstanding: Kristen Thorne. She's probably going to kill me for mentioning her because she's crazy busy, but if you get the chance to work with her, believe me, it's worth it. She has big time experience in post-production and she knows exactly what producers, engineers and clients are going to ask a voice talent for. Her classes and coaching sessions flow easily and seamlessly, are very specific and loaded with great info on how to give a client what they need with your voice. Kristen really gets to know you personally and chit chats enough to make you comfy, but it never takes over the session. Her directions are clear and concise, and when you hit it, she'll let you know. If a direction doesn't work, she'll try something else or move on in a congenial way. Very thin line to walk as a coach and she does it extraordinarily well. She made me feel like a million bucks every session I had with her. Listening to Kristen communicate with my engineer on demo day was a treat, too. She was speedy, efficient, all while still encouraging me. I even had time for playback on every spot during the hour so I could hear exactly what they're going to sound like. I learned so much from just the terms and procedures they were using. She's such a friendly, positive presence that I was actually sad when it was time for her to sign off! As expensive as demos are these days, the Edge package is a great value, and you leave with great connections in the business. I took off one star because they are just SO busy. It's great to be in demand, but rescheduling coaching and demo sessions in the event of illness or conflicts can be difficult and it takes time, sometimes weeks. Edge is doing the best they can, but their business seems to be growing, and hopefully they'll keep finding great coaches to help with the workload. Thanks guys! read more

I attended the 1-day Evaluation Workshop at Edge Studio back in 2012 and subsequently signed up for their Training Program. No pressure involved. I had several sessions with various instructors, all of whom I found to be very competent. The training was very solid, as well as competitively priced. However, my attitude was nonchalant, for reasons I shall not go into, which ultimately, not surprisingly, put my instructors' patience to the test.. As the final, pre-demo, session was approaching, they informed me that I wasn't obliged to press on. I agreed that I wasn't ready for it. To my surprise, the studio readily refunded the pre-paid amount for the demo production. I hadn't even asked for it; assuming that that money was lost. Doesn't sound like a company purely interested in profit, does it? Dearie me, they must've been REALLY fed up with me :-) As for the studio's claim that (prospective) students can expect a candidly expressed assessment of their performance or potential, I can personally attest to the veracity of that statement. I've been praised as well as (harshly) criticized by them. Incidentally, I've recently returned. THIS TIME determined to give it my best shot! Doesn't sound like a dissatisfied customer, does it? In recent months I've been coached exclusively by David Goldberg, CEO of Edge Studio. Of course, "exclusively" doesn't mean I'm his only student, but rather that he is my only coach :-).He is considered a leading authority in the voice-over industry, and quite deservedly so. I read that he's known for his "uncanny ability to provide super-quick yet precise direction". It is exactly this extraordinary ability that struck me instantly, and is certainly a powerful reason why he is my "fave" coach. My accent is more British than American (AE), but, naturally,that's not a problem; on the contrary, Americans tend to love 'English' accents. British English differs from AE preponderantly with regard to spelling and vocabulary, the grammar is essentially the same. Both are equally "proper" provided the speaker adheres to "Standard" English. read more

So potential voice talent beware, my first encounter was and is my last! It appears there are quite a few of these studios or educational opportunities (so called schools?). I paid an amount to participate in a webinar..Unfortunately had a family emergency. I tried to call and cancel or reschedule. And here is where the BS comes in ..blah blah blah but for more money I could reschedule??? There policy isn't very friendly not even a little. Edge Studio is awesome. As a newer VO instead of spending hundreds to thousands of dollars you can take a 4 hour class where you learn some VO basics and get to go into the studio and record. They will let you know if you have a shot at this business or not. When you are part of their learning programs you are getting amazing value, and a great list of coaches to work with that are working VO professionals, and know the business well. I am working with them now on my third demo and I was able to become a full time VO over the last year with the foundation they have given me. I book VO jobs regularly now, have agent representation, and made a new career for myself thanks to the wonderful people and training at Edge. read more

When I first began exploring voiceover as a second career, I looked into a number of firms offering VO instruction. I selected Edge, and have never looked back. I attended the private evaluation and received a pretty good evaluation from the instructor. Then, the instructor told me she knew somebody that can do training for me and the staff at Edge studio will contact that specific instructor for me. So i waited .....then a month later someone at the Edge studio called me and said they are working with the instructor on the pricing since that instructor is not part of the "crew" and then i waited for ....NOTHING They gave me a HOPE and that was it. I was stupid enough to trust them. Please don't waste your time and money. read more

I attended the 4 hour introductory workshop at Edge Studio last week and was very impressed with the facility as well as with the young woman who ran the workshop. She was extremely knowledgeable of the voice over business and made the 8 of us feel very welcomed and comfortable. I especially like the fact that we were given time in the recording booth and given critical analysis of our voice over potential. Overall I got very good feedback from the evaluations when I attended the Investigate voiceover & 3 of the private sessions, but they basically judge you by how you sound in order to take a class with them. I kept getting that I sounded nasally and that it might get in the way of me being marketable. I'm currently taking voiceover classes now at another studio and they train differently. Their method is that if you focus on how you sound your gonna make it worse for yourself. That actually helped me more because I'm more focused on translating the script instead of listening to how I might sound reading it. Note I didn't even have to pay extra for evaluations before registering for the class. I just registered uploaded my headshot and paid for the training simple as that. I also think that it is more fair for anyone to learn the trade without paying for evaluations first to take classes. It gives everyone a chance to explore it that way. read more

Having going through the Edge Studio training program, I would say beware of them and don't believe much of their hype after the evaluation program. They rarely discourage you when you are going through the paid program. When it is time for you demo, suddenly they find all sorts of reasons why you are "not quite ready" and need to pay for additional lessons before they will release your demo. Some of the coaches very very good, particularly in their D.C. area. But the experience with the New York office was much less pleasant. I had scheduled over-the-phone lessons that the instructors forgot about. Some lessons were scheduled for an hour, the instructor would end them abruptly after 20 minutes. It took forever to get responses from them. For some lessons they asked for one to write their own copy, which I did, and never used it. They were always pushing additional sessions above and beyond the $2000+ I have paid for the comprehensive course. And once you have your demo.... you essentially fall off their radar. All of the encourage, "we are here to guide you", etc. that they push during the course disappears. Essentially they have fulfilled their part of the contract, and that is it. It is also interesting that after the initial audition they tell you of all the opportunities out there, but as you near the end of the program their tone changes and suddenly "this is a tough business to be in" becomes the operative word... as if they do not want to be held accountable for any of the positive "advice" they gave you. I don't regret the time, as one best learns from bad experiences. The money wasn't a concern as I am well of enough where it didn't impact me. But I would just caution before signing up for the paid program, as the value they project for it doesn't hold true once you go through the program. read more

I work for a prominent television company in LA that schedules VO sessions for talent all over the country. While Anne was pleasant during booking, that's the only nice thing I can say about this studio. She confused the day that I had scheduled the session, sending me a frantic email in the morning of the wrong day causing me to panic that I had incorrectly booked the session. Then when our talent could no longer make the session (completely out of our control) and we cancelled 20 hours in advance, they insisted on charging us for the full price (almost $400!) even though no services were rendered. Entertainment is all about the unpredictable, the inflexible do not survive! When she was following up on the charge, Anne was extremely rude on the phone. DO NOT book with these people. Virtually a horrible experience from start to finish. read more
