I arranged rental time at Michiko in late December 2024, for a studio upright piano that turned out was not in good condition. I believe this was a Kawai. Despite claims the staff made about technicians routinely servicing their pianos, this instrument was not in tune and had not been reguated so the action had what piano technicians call "lost motion," which means there is space between the end of keys and the moving parts of the action. This creates a sloppy feeling in the keys, and thus a sub-standard playing experience. Lost motion is easily corrected and this lasts for a long time so either the cause is poor technician skill or the Michiko does not pay enough to maintain this instrument. Sound from other nearby rehearsal studios was a distraction. read more

I am going to keep this one short and sweet since I was only visiting the establishment to enjoy a performance by some Japanese musicians I had met who were part of a larger collective set this evening. The collective had arranged for one of the larger rooms so they could have some audience members, the full company and be able to stream it online as it happened. Spatially speaking they had a reasonable stage that held everyone involved. A full four piece band, some singers and some traditional Japanese instrument players and a grand piano. To the other side of the room was the soundboard and a setup of chairs. They had about 20 or so chairs to sit in and the audience would be a mix of invited friends, the media and the other members of the collective. Overall a nice group. The sound in this room was wonderful and you heard everything nice and clear and it was quite enjoyable. The space itself was clean and had a number of bathrooms and a WiFi signal to login to. I asked the friendly staffer what else the venue had and they said there were numerous smaller rooms like phone booths almost that people use to practice singing only or their voiceover and podcast work. Good idea. While I don't know if I will ever be there again I enjoyed my time here and thing the talented people who are reading this Yelp should look into the place in case it serves their needs. read more

My piano teacher recommended Michiko as a good rehearsal studio to use while I was in New York, and I'm so pleased that he referred me to this place! I went approximately weekly for about 2 months, and I had a positive experience. I primarily made reservations via telephone, but you can also reserve studio space online. I only used one of their piano studios (Studio L), which I thought was well-priced in terms of rental rates (and is also the cheapest of all of the piano rooms offered). I bought and added funds to a Michiko Card, which led to a discounted rate for my Studio L reservations; payment was also very simple once I had the Michiko Card, as the could debit money directly from my account instead of me providing a separate card for payment. Due to COVID-19 cleaning protocols, there is a scheduled gap in between reservations. However, I never had a problem reserving for my preferred times, and I found the staff to be generally friendly. read more

I had to find a place to practice piano when my usual practice room is temporarily unavailable. I only need an upright piano so I purchased hour cards for 14 dollars per hour to use the upright piano studio. The price is the lowest I have ever seen in NYC but honestly the pianos were old, bad and insensitive. You cannot make different sound effect with them. Please do not expect it to be a long term practice place if you truly want to improve your piano skill. read more

Joined another artist for a one-hour reservation. Immediately turned off by the out-of-tune piano. Notified the clerk and was told that they're tuned regularly, and that the vendor had been there today, but that particular piano was not scheduled to be tuned for another week. Full disclosure: I am a serious-minded, pretty skilled pianist, and tuning is a priority for me. Out of tune pianos are not a "pet peeve" of mine, they are the bane of music. Quality pianos do not lose their tune this badly unless it has been a long time since tuning, or the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) are poor. Inferior pianos go out of tune easily, are more trouble than they are worth, and should be gotten rid of in all haste by rehearsal vendors. I would hope the clerk has notified management and the vendor called in immediately, but am doubtful, based on his nonchalant attitude, that this level of attention is the norm. I may as well have told the cat. The room lighting was very poor. One recessed ceiling light in the small room (F) was extremely dim, with very little light cast on the piano stand (which, by the way, was in disrepair and slipping around). We were told that it takes time for that light to increase in luminescence. Unacceptable. The room was also just a bit small, but, except for the unacceptable instrument and light, acceptable for our purposes with respect to size. Positive aspects: Pleasant entrance area, only one set of stairs to climb, good location, easy-to-remember name for the purposes of avoiding it in the future (Me-Cheap-O). I was going to ask the clerk to add me to the mailing list, but I decided not to bother. I am not overly negative with reviews, and always try to be fair (my 2 stars is an act of charity). I wouldn't want Michiko to suffer loss of reputation based on one bad review, but this review needed to be posted and I have stated my experience as factually as I can. read more

Came here for the first time this past Friday. It was super easy to make the reservation online (the night before) and was even able to adjust it when my teacher requested a later class time. The guy who answered the phone (believe his name was Martin) was super friendly and was more than helpful in accommodating my time change request. I ended up having to move halfway through my reservation time to another room (due to my rescheduling the start time of my reservation) and was able to test 2 of their small piano rooms. Both pianos were well tuned and both rooms were clean and comfy. Would definitely come back again. The only draw back is that it is in the middle of the theatre district so the walk there from the subway is a bit tourist heavy and chaotic as is to be expected on Fridays at 6pm. read more

I came across this studio on a directory of rehearsal studios in the city, so I decided to give it a try. I used one of the small rooms with a piano in it, and the piano was in good condition and in tune. It's a clean rehearsal studio with very reasonable prices. While the rooms aren't really sound-proofed, you won't get deafened by the people playing in other rooms, since this place is geared towards classical, jazz, and broadway musicians. The studio doors have windows to the hallway where people can see in. It didn't bother me, but if privacy is a big concern you may want to look elsewhere. Also, if you are a loud rock band, this is not the rehearsal studio for you. read more

Very nice studio. It was my first time. Very clean and friendly staff. Good grand piano too. Can't give it more stars because the PA in the room I booked had some issues. We didn't have time to move to another room, so we stuck it out. I would definitely go back though. The perks: it's in the heart of Times Square if you're already in the city. Downside if you're driving is parking and traffic. If you're driving, I recommend parking closer to 9th Ave where the lots are a little cheaper. I found one for $20 bucks! read more

From my experience, one of the best rehearsal studios in NY and for jazz/acoustic instruments, possibly THE best. Why not 5 stars? I've been a customer of Michiko for many years. I understand completely that times have change--that the 1% of NYC's wealthiest, the landowners, and landlords, have squeezed the 99% w/ nearly impossible rents; the arts, and artists, have been punished by this for wanting to keep Manhattan a creative center of the world. At issue here is: some of the staff here could lighten up with their attitudes just a little bit. As mentioned I understand it's no longer the 80s or even the 90s, when rules could be a little lax and a reasonable cancellation won't be charged. They HAVE to have a strict policy w/ cancellations, holding your credit card #, etc in order to survive. I'm saying a little friendliness and positive attitude can go a long way and I'd love to see that at Michiko. As stated, this does not apply to all staff. Beyond this, GREAT place and I'll continue to be a customer. read more

HEADS UP: make absolutely sure when booking the room that you tell them your band's instrumentation. There aren't drums in every room. I had a few rehearsals / recording session with a 14 -piece orchestra at Stage 1 and 2 at Michiko Studios. We had an amazing time there. Great staff; helpful, professional and fun people. Anything we needed, they helped us within a second. Space is clean, rooms are sound proof (not like some other spaces), instruments are in impeccable condition. I especially loved Stage 2. In my experience, the staff has always been friendly and accommodating. I'm a vocalist, and if you're a solo musician, you can rent one of their little C Studios for $5 for half an hour to warm up. These are walk-in, always open, and pretty tiny -- about 3x4 -- but very affordable. They also have gift cards where you can purchase 10 hourly rooms for 10% off. read more

Great value when u r practicing, piano, in particular. The rooms varies as do the prices. I love the proximity to work, which allows me to practice during lunch hours. Getting busy the you have to book ahead these days, and they need 24 hour advance notice to cancel. Nothing fancy, which I am happy as it keeps the price down. read more
