I would like to start by saying everyone who assisted me in the studio was helpful and polite. The…read morevoice and movement professors, John and especially Onye, were encouraging and friendly. However, as the name on the door is Terry Knickerbocker, my rating is one because I can't give zero. Numerous extremely uncomfortable episodes happened during the time I was there. In some of these episodes, Terry made extremely disrespectful comments about a specific young black student. In my case, because I'm big and muscular, all the criticism was focused on my appearance and how bad my acting was, comparing me to Vin Diesel. I know the intention was to offend me, but thinking about it, Vin Diesel is at least actually acting and not coaching actors. I can't speak for other people or other classes, but as I read on the website that people from minorities have had problems in the studio in the past, there's a good chance this isn't an isolated case. Terry often demands reverential treatment but treats it rudely and impersonally. He demands punctuality but finishes class 40 minutes later. He demands that you answer his comments ( because he doesn't like feeling like an ATM) but interrupts you when you try to express yourself, and especially, like every narcissist, he will shut you down if you disagree with anything or point out any contradictions in the feedback he has given, which happens constantly because In one class he will tell you to be sweeter. On the other, he will complain that you are being too sweet. An art environment, especially for beginners, should be more encouraging, inclusive, and, why not, fun! But Terry seems to have a personal interest in making everything extremely uncomfortable, oppressive, and frightening. Terry has interests other than making the beginning student grow, as he says, "I don't like teaching, but my name is on the door." What he forgets and should be a priority is that the name on the card that keeps his studio open is that of the student. I'm still shocked at how despicable some interactions were, but deep down, I understand that all this sadism comes from a deep resentment for not having been able to have a career as an actor. But even understanding the source, I don't think it's fair that because of his inability to be an actor, he tries to kill the spirit of those starting out and still having a chance to realy make art. I understand that some people will say something different and even publicly defend Terry, most artists, especially actors and actresses, have deep insecurity and seek recognition from this type of sadistic figure or are just afraid of losing opportunities by criticizing a figure who, for them, is a gatekeeper, but, If you want to know what people there really think, ask someone personally. For me, being a veteran, having been born in the projects, the son of a black man, and an immigrant, especially as an artist who creates his own opportunities and directs his own films in his own country I don't need to kiss anyone's ring and I don't need to lie about how disrespectful, uncomfortable and counterproductive my time in Terry's class was. In short, I have never dealt with a more toxic and narcissistic person in my life.

I've been at studios that have great equipment and boasts top notch production. What good is the equipment with all these plug-ins, amps, software, etc..if the engineer can't bring your sounds the way you envision? It's like that feeling I get seeing people who can't drive in a nice luxury/expensive car. Well, I hope you got the analogy, but basically what I'm saying is that the Brewery is official. One of the few spots that can give you something to look forward to listening to when you get home (granted you finish your session before leaving). Some studios you go to simple record your vocals and call it a day. Others don't make you feel comfortable recording. But the Brewery isn't either of them. The area isn't crazy like Manhattan, and the place itself is very well put together. They offer beverages, and boast a nice iso-booth to record. Trying to book a session might get hectic, but nevertheless, its one of the few studio gems that Brooklyn has to offer. The price is kind of expensive, but I never complain if the service matches it. Plus, they have off-peak rates that you can definitely take advantage of. I plan to make this one of my go-to places for all my music endeavors. Great that you can book + pay online too. From learning script analysis, on camera technique, getting my headshots and reel, and having help getting my casting account set up in class, I found myself getting cast super often immediately after graduation from the beginner program. I now take the on going advanced classes, and all the students and coaches truly feel like a family to me. The school's coaches are all working actors themselves who have worked with some of the biggest names in the industry so they are the best to learn from. They are people that you can go to with any questions you may have as a new actor and they are always so helpful. This isn't the type of school where you eventually take all the classes and have no more to gain; the advanced classes are always growing and the coaches give us scenes and work that they know will help our individual careers. The coaches take the most amazing tapes in class for us so I have a great reel from that to use for castings. We also always have endless support, a place to film our self tapes, and help with our auditions at this school. It's unfortunate and damaging to innocent people who just want to learn. Carl Ford (Susan's son) abuses his power and harps on the student's fear of retaliation if they dare to publicly speak on it. If you haven't got your needs met as a child/young adult from your parents, haven't healed yet, and are an attractive woman don't go here. If Carl finds you attractive, your time in that studio will ONLY be about that and if you don't give him any s*xual attention, he will retaliate against you by saying your "work is sh*t" during class feedback etc. I have shared my experience with women who have went to the studio during the same year that I went there and they have had a mutual experience. Some even worse. We hear about this in the business all of the time but that doesn't make it right or normal. I've held this in since 2019 and I am warning you all (ESPECIALLY WOMEN). Do not go here. I went before their online classes. I would not recommend. If you first meet him and he compliments you physically and says you're "gorgeous", RUN! That's when the harassment starts. The studio is a casting couch. If Carl doesn't find you attractive and want to hook up with you, consider yourself lucky.

Some weeks after the opening, Carl repeatedly got verbally violent and abusive; he shouted at me broad types of insults and ended up physically assaulting me and calling me homophobic slurs. He put part of the show's team at risk, almost ruined my artistic career, and spoiled a whole production. The more I tell my experience, the more similar stories I learn from former students, especially women whom Carl Ford inappropriately treated. Artists, stay safe and away from these destructive practices. Art has nothing to do with violence.
