If I could give 10 stars I would! Who knew that almost one year ago I'd come to meet and know the most benevolent and inspirational people I'd ever meet at Acting Out! I want to start by saying Roberta Lowe is such an extraordinary and exceptional person! A very good friend of mine had recommend Acting Out in order to help prepare my 13 year old daughter, Saje to audition for LaGuardia and PPAS high school. I had no idea that other kids had to start preparing very early on and as I have come to find out i was already late in the game... You see, I am a Registered Nurse and a single mom of three young and beautiful girls. My oldest daughter just turned thirteen and had become inspired by her best friend, Jonah Mussolino to get into acting and singing. Jonah is an up and coming child star and was featured on many Broadway shows as well as starring on a Netflix series. He has been with acting out since a very young age. My good friend, who recommended Acting Out is Jonah's mom. I was very skeptical because I knew I would not have to time to support my daughter through this. After speaking with Roberta Loew for the first time and explaining my circumstances as a single mother, she gave me an overly confident feeling that seemed too good to be true. Although it was late in the game, Roberta reassured me that she will work closely with my daughter to make sure she catches up. I thought I'd give it a try and WOW best decision ever!!! Robert Loew took full responsibility immediately and every word that she stated on the very first conversation about how she will make sure that Saje is well prepared for her LaGuardia and PPAS audition was indeed true and ultimately an accomplished goal! She knew exactly what Saje needed to prepare well and made sure saje had all the specific courses to help her. Also, because Roberta knew I worked long hours, She took on the role of a second mother and made sure saje was attending all classes and getting her work done. Roberta Loew was not playing! She was on top of it. At one point, Saje was lacking and falling behind and Roberta caught it immediately. She talked to me about what Saje could work on, and encouraged Saje to not give up. Saje built a special bond with each and every instructor she had at Acting out. The classes were small and personal. Every instructor that Saje worked with was patient and full of encouragement and inspiration. Acting Out is truly heaven sent! Every child and family deserves to feel as special as Acting Out made us feel. It wasn't about just getting the job done, it was on a whole different level! After an intense few months of preparation, Saje was ready to record. We got the opportunity to finally meet Roberta In person at the studio. She worked with Saje and did not give up until she felt Saje recorded the best clip. Roberta recorded two monologues, and two songs. We sent them in for the highschool application, and surprise! Saje made it into LaGuardia vocal, and was waitlisted for PPAS drama! Roberta Loew never seemed to have a doubt. I am truly inspired by her character! So confident and the energy that flowed through her was so strong and contagious! Truly one of a kind. All thanks to Roberta Loew and the amazing teachers at Acting Out! Each one is extremely talented, hardworking and sweet. We could not have done it otherwise! We will forever be grateful for the footprint and life lesson of compassion, encouragement and kindness Acting Out has left in our lives. IT IS LONG, BUT PLEASE READ. I walked into Acting Out, based on a friends recommendation, with my daughter who had performed in small, non talking roles in school and camp plays with the hope that she would have the chance to move to the next level, maybe she'd be a talking dog instead of a tree. I met Roberta who was warm and friendly but had a side of honesty to her that I immediately recognized and loved. I expected to hear how great my daughter was and that a gazillion dollars in lessons would be very helpful. As I sat there I listened to her speak to another parent about an honest evaluation of her child's progress. At that moment I knew I was exactly where I needed to be. I needed honesty and a staff that would understand what my daughter needed, I didn't want to be pushed in wasting time and money. At the time I didn't know how lucky I was to be there, but I felt the honesty she offered was a perfect start for me. I'd love to go into a detailed step by step explanation of the entire adventure, and if you do go there if I'm around I'd love to talk about it in detail, but I'd be writing forever. Roberta, John, Danielle and the staff there brought my daughter from a barking dog to leads in multiple shows that she used to have non speaking roles in. She was so well prepared for her High School auditions she literally had her choice of the very best Performing Arts High Schools in the city. Make no mistake, my daughter bought in and worked as hard as any kid possibly could. Her hard work was supported in everyway possible by Acting Out, from late night responses to texts, shuffling schedules, understanding my daughter thoroughly and leading her to the perfect scripts and songs that wowed them at auditions. This was absolutely CRITICAL. They understood My daughter's strengths and weaknesses and their experience and knowledge made her SHINE. My daughter sang Italian Opera, in Italian, to near perfection for her auditions. She was prepped with mock interviews, mock auditions where 3 panel judges were brought in to make the audition feel as real as possible. At one point when I was trying to schedule additional tutoring she bluntly told me that it was not needed, that my daughter was ready. Who tells you NOT to spend more money in their business? A caring knowledgeable business woman, parent and now a friend that I will proudly and forever be linked with. If your child is all in with this process, then there are no better people on the planet to put your trust in. I wasnt sure of some of the choices, but i put my trust the their expertise, and it payed huge dividends. They won over a life and battle hardened skeptical Dad who is now the proud parent of a busting with confidence little girl that has had her talent honed and put forward in an unbelievable way. Acting Out was recommended to us 4 years ago, and that's when we met Roberta. Since then, my older daughter is a part of the Acting Out family and is attending MT for vocal. She is having so much fun with the friends she has made in Acting Out and gets so excited about the shows they put on together every June. They all work so well together on them and each show is incredible. All the teachers she works with, either in Vocal, Acting Class, and or Musical Theater has made a difference in her talents, because of their caring professional teaching skills; that nurture her to be the best she can be while having a great time doing what she loves. We look forward the amazing new adventures with Acting Out for her HS auditions. My younger daughter became aware of her talented side this year, and is also a part of the Acting Out family. She started this year with monologue, vocal and acting classes, to take on the challenge of her middle school auditions, and found that she loves it all, including the friends she has made as well. She was so blessed with her teachers, they took her under their wings with so much support and love, that she passed both vocal and drama auditions. So with the 99 she received in drama, she will be attending MT in Sept for drama! My daughter attended Acting Out for high school audition prep and received offers to all of her top choices (Laguardia, Frank Sinatra) but even if she hadn't, I would write this glowing review because Roberta and John are THE BEST. I'm actually not sure how they do it, they're enormously personally invested in each individual kid in the program and go above and beyond in so many ways. My daughter, Tierney, grew exponentially as an actor and vocalist this year - honestly a shocking amount. She loved every minute of her time at Acting Out and became close friends with all of her classmates. Acting Out feels like a family, it's a family business with heart backed up by a truly thorough knowledge of craft and technique. They make sure the kids feel fully supported and cared for all the time and they individualize support for your unique kid. Full disclosure, I'm also an actor and can assure you that Roberta and John are the kind of coaches you find once in a lifetime - they're mentors. They're the kind of teachers you thank in your Oscar speech 20 years later for setting you on the path, believing in you and pushing you to the edge of your abilities. They're wonderful. My daughter has learning difficulties; needless to say she struggles throughout the year in school, and her confidence level and self esteem are low. This summer instead of concentrating our efforts into tutoring sessions during the summer, we decided to let her do something she loves. We were hesitant walking in through the doors of ACTING OUT! Myself, as a mom of a struggling kid, only hoped that she would find a place that made her happy. My daughter, being accustomed to disappointment, shielded herself with an "I don't care" attitude. My daughter attended Acting Out's boot camp for the performing arts high school auditions. John and Roberta, who run the program, offer very clear, concrete training methods that don't talk down to teen performers. In private sessions, John gave her great direction and helped her find monologues that played to her strengths. My daughter found their classes creatively inspiring and she grew as a performer. At the same time she learned the nuts and bolts of auditions and was able to tackle the process with confidence. Our daughter attended private audition prep lessons at Acting Out leading up to her audition for the screened theater program at Edward R. Murrow High School. What a great experience! She not only raised her confidence level, but developed and portrayed her character with much greater depth, emotion, and personality. Acting Out enabled her to understand her role from perspectives she hadn't thought of. Their coaching and constructive feedback was spot on and she was accepted into Murrow's program! I've always considered my daughter as very talented. We heard about the the Acting Out! school, so I brought her to Ms. Roberta for an audition. Right off the bat, I knew there was going to be no BS. She listened to my daughter sing and gave her honest feedback and accepted her into the program. I registered my Daughter in a musical theater class, an acting class, and private voice lessons. My daughter's development over the past 3 years has been tremendous. The teachers are very professional. Acting Out! exponentially grew my daughter's talents. My son has been a student of Acting Out for almost four years now and the classes have really changed his life. My son has been diagnosed with a disorder that makes him very sensitive, nervous and sometimes withdrawn. When he is at Acting Out he becomes a totally different kid!!! Not only does he become very outgoing but his nerves subside. He has also met so many kids and has formed so many friendships. The older students treat him like he is one of them. Acting out is an amazing acting school. The staff has always been friendly and professional. Roberta has always been available to answer any questions day or night. Two of my children have taken various classes there. They both love going there. We originally found this school to help prep for middle school admissions and both my children were able to get into their first choice school. Most recently we have gone through high school admissions and have been getting amazing feedback from top drama schools. My son just received an offer to LaGuardia Highschool. Acting Out is THE place to go for theatrical training in the region. And not just for the kids - Their acting class for adults was truly Transformative for me. I am a complete novice, but in just a few short weeks I learned so much. Our instructor, Katie, created a safe environment where she instantly formed a trusting bond amongst our classmates. Katie really knows her stuff. And she made us all feel empowered to get up on that stage and give it our all. Everyone in the class either had absolutely no experience or had not acted since high school or college. But by the end of our time together we all gave truly moving performances. They know how to properly prepare students for testing into the most competitive programs. Even better they care so much and it shows. My daughter Malia has been attending classes and privates at Acting Out since October. I can not express in words how happy we are with this school. Acting Out offers many things. My child was given audition preparation and MORE. The classes offer students an understanding of non-verbal communication in a group setting, the need for trust among actors on the stage. My child learned the nuance of delivering a serious piece while laughing. The groups have made her aware of interpersonal communication. The instruction here is not just preparation for auditions and performances. The children are learning to be members of a community. My daughter has been going to Acting Out for over 8 years now. She absolutely loves it there and loves her teachers. She started going because she had an interest in performing and singing. We enrolled my daughter in a cold reading class and private monologue sessions in order to prep for middle school auditions. What we didn't realize was what an amazing experience she would have in the process! This is Nicole's 2nd year and we are very happy. She loves her weekly acting class, the year-end productions are well done, school organization fantastic - overall great experience.
