The instructor, Suri, was often harsh and made my child feel singled out in front of the class. She frequently corrected my child while overlooking similar behavior from other students. My child was consistently placed in the back, while other students were given more freedom and attention. As a parent, it was upsetting and disappointing to witness this treatment firsthand. Every child deserves to be encouraged and treated fairly in a learning environment. Because of this experience, we will not be returning to this studio and cannot recommend it to others.

I'm glad I decided to try something new and I am confident in the knowledge and expertise of this halau.

This review is based on our INDIVIDUAL experiences from 2023-2024 due to how & what Kumu (teacher)…read moreKāhealani did or FAILED to do which led me to reluctantly pull my 2 young multi-ethnic kaikamāhine or daughters (my maternal & paternal ancestors are Kānaka 'Ōiwi or Native Hawaiian) out of her Hālau the day before they were supposed to perform on 11/3/24. We appreciated the majority of our experiences & especially that of her sister, Aunty Kālei. Throughout 2024, went practice every month, Kumu only taught our girls (1) new song & 1-2 new chants. This is BELOW da standard for traditional Hālau's in our Native HI (mind you, I went Kamehameha Schools on Oʻahu). We feel our oldest of 2 daughters was definitely held bk fm her potential at Hālau Hula O Kāhealani likely due to frequent new enrollees each month. SUGGESTION: Have open-enrollment periods during specific months ONLY. Kumu's passive aggressiveness & terrible communication skills caused a lot of confusion & frustration for us & those who were too afraid to speak up. She not only disappointed my husband & I, but most importantly, our CHILDREN. They were proud to learn hula fm a fellow Kanaka wahine, but HEARTBROKEN to learn how Kumu treated me in recent months which lead to our unfortunate departure. Most hālau's in HI do NOT promote new students as quickly as she did the mom & daughter that we referred there - even IF you are a good dancer, but hula is more than just that. When we closed escrow on our Big Island hale (home), she didn't congratulate us nor show any support, but will joyfully announce to the hālau during Kupukupu classes on many occasions about another non-Native student/family "going to HI." Any Kanaka should be mighty proud of a fellow Kanaka who's finally able to buy back a piece of their own NATIVE 'ĀINA (land). SUMMARY ~9/2023 - Kumu volunteered me *before speaking with me,* along w a nice Asian mom to assist all other parents in preparation for that upcoming Hoʻike performance in Nov 2023. I was taken by surprise, but went along with it as best as I could. She later apologized for volunteering me when she realized how much I have to do to take care of my then 9yo's incurable autoimmune T1d (I tried my best to educate her & a few other parents since we enrolled in early 2022). It gets worse... 10/9/24 - Given how disorganized & scattered the communication was with this Hālau esp during hectic Hoʻike time, I took it upon myself to draft a Google Doc of important practice dates, the selected costume, etc (attached). I *offered* Kumu this TEMPLATE in a text msg, but she quickly declined. A few mins later, Aunty Carol messaged me on da Bando app saying, "Not to share it with ANYONE...we have people handling it." Yikes, take it easehhh. For clarification: It was NOT ever my intent to share it w all da other parents, but for *Kumu* to decide for herself IF she wanted to use my cleaner template than what was eventually provided to us parents [A for effort]. 10/25/24 - Kumu planned to have Kupukupu (our girls class) do da *balance routine on stage* during intermission for their 2nd Hoʻike that Nov. I commented on it in one of da practice announcements Kumu posted to the Hālau's Bando app. She didn't like it, but will insist it was cuz I shared my "personal info" (other parents explained their schedule conflicts w other extracurriculars on the app before, but she's left theirs as is). 10/27/24 - I replied to her DM on da Bando app expressing my extreme disappointment & her lack of professionalism (hellooo...you violated my Freedom of Speech just bc you didn't like me calling you out for da Balance Routine although I suggested an alternative song from 2023's Hoʻike). 11/2/24 - Kumu REMOVED me from da Hālau Bando app. Never called/texted to further discuss w us parents either (see attached). DENIED my necessary ACCESS to important Hoʻike updates da day before da performance. We hope Kumu heals fm whatevah internal trauma that's clearly still affecting her ability to truly engage w Hawaiians like us living in diaspora LA. We don't expect anyone who isn't Kanaka or wasn't born & raised in HI by *Hawaiians or true kamaʻāina* (not just a discount) to ever understand our experiences & the very THIN LINE between learning & misappropriating or exploiting our culture. She & our [ex] buddies ghosted us in Nov 2024. True friends don't keep tabs on you through social media & try to compete w you in any way. Aloha ʻoe (farewell)!
