Food boxes on the dresser. These were left behind after the room was "cleaned".

I stayed in room 156 from May 11-12 (Sat-Sun); check-in/out times are 3pm/11am, respectively. I arrived at around 4:30pm and checked in with Amber. They had gotten my reservation correct (non-smoking, balcony, two full beds). I was told one of their housekeepers was out and the remaining housekeeper was behind schedule and Amber wasn't sure if she'd gotten to my room yet. I told her that I understood and I went up to my room. It was obvious the room hadn't been cleaned and from the looks of it the previous occupant had issues. The floor was COVERED in food crumbs. The microwave had bits of food on/in it. There were two large trash bags next to the dresser filled with all kinds of food-related garbage, plus a couple of food containers on the dresser. Curiously, there was a box from a bar of "Dove" soap IN THE DRESSER. The table had something spilled on it and there were stains on the seats. Both beds were unmade. There was trash on the nightstand, and in the nightstand drawer there were ten pennies, a half-drunk bottle of Pepto Bismol, and a partially used box of anti-diarrheal pills. The coffee pot had cold coffee and used grounds in it. There were no towels or washcloths. The sink had soap residue in it. The mirror was covered in speckles. The bathroom floor had a squashed dead spider right at the doorway and bits of unidentifiable "stuff" on the floor around the toilet. There were LARGE amounts of hair, soap scum, and dirt in the bathtub and on the shower walls. The two light bulbs in the ceiling were both splattered with something dark. There were no hotel consumables. I understood the reality of only one housekeeper so this didn't bug me. I went to the office, confirmed that the room hadn't been cleaned, and politely requested that it be cleaned next. Amber was understanding and immediately went to find the housekeeper. I sat outside to wait. A few minutes later Amber returned and told me my room would be cleaned next. About 45 minutes later Amber told me my room was ready so up I went. SOME issues had been resolved but MANY had not. The room was generally tidy; things were where they were supposed to be, the beds were made with fresh linen, the trash was mostly removed, the floor had been vacuumed (except around the edges and other tight areas), and there were fresh towels and washcloths. But EVERYTHING else remained. I returned to the office and asked Amber to have the bathroom cleaned. I showed her the pictures and she again went to get the housekeeper. A few minutes later the housekeeper arrived at my room, looking inexplicably terrified. She had inadequate cleaning supplies with her but got to work. Ten minutes later she asked me if it was suitable. Most of the hair and dirt was gone from the shower/tub and she had rinsed out (but not WASHED) the coffee maker, but there was still a lot of obvious issues. Rather than continue to hassle her I let it be; I could deal with the rest on my own. More discoveries: Although the TV is HD-capable, the cable TV connection is SD only with no channel guide. The AC unit wouldn't turn on, but I discovered a thermostat (which appears to do nothing) and a light switch with a label that says "HEAT". Turn it on and the outlet for the air conditioner powers up. The light above the sink turns off and on all by itself. There was a towel rack outside the bathroom but there's no bar for the towels. The heater below it was hanging off the wall. The deadbolt on the door was misaligned so it was impossible to deadbolt the door. The lamp on the table near the air conditioner was unplugged. I awoke at 8:30am and took a shower. The water pressure is TERRIBLE, barely more than a trickle even with both faucets fully open. The shower drain was not working well; by the time I finished my shower the water was ankle-deep. The hotel offers a free breakfast which included a small pastry assortment, fresh waffles, cereal, coffee, tea, and apple/orange juice. I didn't sample the coffee or tea but I soon learned that the fruit juices were being watered down a LOT. The hotel offers free wifi but I did not use it. So, what's GOOD here? The beds are clean and very comfortable, and the hotel was quiet. I was expecting traffic noise and screaming children (and adults) at all hours of the night, but got none of that. Although the water PRESSURE is poor, there's plenty of hot water. Amber was exceptionally friendly and helpful, not just to me but to others that were coming and going. Although clearly overworked, she always had a positive and professional attitude even with patrons who were (IMO) a little too "abrupt" with her. No pun intended, but Amber is the jewel here. She was always dealing with patrons, answering phones, stocking the breakfast area, giving driving directions, checking people in/out, looking for housekeeping, and probably fifty other things that I didn't see her do, all with complete professionalism and courtesy.

There was a sleeper sofa in the room, that reeked of urine. I'm not sure if it was coming from the mattress section or the cushions on the couch or what, but it was pretty much nothing that we would sit on. Speaking of not sitting on it, there was dust on the armrests like they don't have vacuum attachments or something. Cobwebs on power cords and curtains. Mildew or mold in the shower between the tiles. See pictures. Water would leak from the shower, under the wall, soaking the carpet 3 ft. Into the carpeting by the side of the bed. To the point where my girlfriend's shoelaces were wet in the morning. Luckily she didn't have a bag on the floor.. Very loud creaky ceiling. I think most hotels use concrete floors but this one has wooden floors and between the footsteps and the creaking, it was hard to get to sleep. Could also easily hear voices from upstairs. While we were down at the pool, our key became demagnetized for some reason, and when my girlfriend went to the desk to get it reprogrammed, the lady, Darlene , gave her the third degree about asking for ID and everything which of course was in the room that we couldn't get into. And then finally reprogrammed the key but like it was a chore and she was doing us a favor. Handicap spots are on the side of the building but you have to wheel around to the main entrance because there's no cutout in the sidewalk to get up to the side entrance. Breakfast. I knew it was posted on the wall and they offered things like pancakes and bacon or omelets and bacon. But Saturdays and Sundays it's the exact same menu. Scrambled eggs and sausage links. You would think they would split that up. Mix it up for weekend travelers. Will not stay there again.

Thank you. Enjoyed the pool, no one was there at the time I went for a swim, which was great. Overall I'll definitely consider staying again.

There was an ice machine and soda machine by the office, though the credit card machine was not working so I had to get change at the front desk. The TV remote was absent and there were no extras at the front desk so no tv for me. Entrances to rooms are interior. I was on the second floor with an outside door to the building near my end if the building. Someone had propped open that door late at night and I closed it. A complimentary breakfast continental style is included. I would have rated 4 stars except for billing. I prepaid with Expedia and the online checkin process was great, providing a pic of driver's license, color, make of car, all things to speed up the checkin process and it did. HOWEVER, next day I was charged not only thru Expedia, but by Days Inn. Not cool at all. I called the hotel. They directed me to their 800 customer service number. First call to them and I was disconnected. Not cool at all. Next call they told me I needed to call Expedia. WTH? Not cool at all. So, I called Expedia. They indicated a refund was made and would take up to 5 days. Still not cool at all. Last time I ever pre-pay for a hotel. Period.

Don't get me wrong, it's expensive. But for once I felt like I'd gotten my money's worth! Everything everywhere was meticulously clean and well-kept. Our room was spacious and bright, with a private balcony and chairs, a couch and coffee table, and a full table that allowed us to take comfortable advantage of the room service breakfast. Potpourri sachets in the closet, free water bottles in the lobby, free coffee stations on each floor, and chocolates every night on the pillows--details, people! We also enjoyed the indoor pool and hot tub, and of course the gorgeous patio and firepits overlooking the lake which was 80% of the reason we booked here. All of the staff we encountered, from the front desk to the housekeepers, were very friendly. I did think it was a little strange that the fitness center was in a whole different building and you have to walk across the parking lot to get to it, but hey--you get your steps in. The hotel is also very centrally located. On the water, of course, but next door to Seneca Harbor Station from which you can book lake cruises. It's also less than a mile from the entrance to Watkins Glen State Park and hiking trails and only a 5-10 minute walk from most restaurants. We did most things on foot. When you do get back in the car, there are multiple wineries within a 15-minute drive. The only problem the whole visit was the hotel internet, which was terrible every day. You could make do in the daytime, but at night, when everyone was back in their rooms after the day out exploring, it was slow to the point of unusable, and I ended up turning on my data hotspot to even be able to check my email. I would not suggest bringing time-sensitive work with you, and you should not expect to be able to stream videos on your devices. Just disconnect, you'll be less frustrated. There is an onsite restaurant and bar, and while it's nothing mind-blowing, it is a nice option to have (and is one of the few "higher end" type places in Watkins Glen). Menu includes a few of the standard local wines, which was nice!

Both are well connected to the local food and wine scene and they introduced us to a couple of the vineyards that are within a ten-minute drive of the Inn and pointed us to an amazing restaurant in Hammondsport--again a short drive from the Inn. Although we didn't have enough time to get there, the Inn is also right next door to a brewery and distillery. Our weather was less than ideal, but it didn't matter. We spent a couple of hours one afternoon hanging out in the historic cupola room with complimentary hot drinks and cookies. As history buffs, we were impressed that the Inn is on the National Registry of Historic Places and was also a stop on the Underground Railroad. It was a perfect environment for the family to catch up before another lovely meal in the Hammondsport area. The Inn offers a full and hearty breakfast each morning--enough food that you may want to skip lunch. They are also more than accommodating for each member of our family's varied dietary preferences; both the vegans and carnivores left the table fully satisfied.
