This is an absolutely wonderful place to stay if you love an old timey kind of stay. No TVs in the…read morerooms, marble slab walls and older fixturing in the bathrooms, a lovely upstairs library, an incredible sitting area downstairs, and a grand dining area are features of this 1930s masterpiece built by a business tycoon on his own property.
There is a guard house on the way in; tell the guard if you're staying at the lodge so you don't have to pay admission.
We have stayed at the lodge twice, both times in a queen "water view" room facing the spring. In these rooms, you can see the water, but at some distance across a lawn. Other rooms have a variety of bed configurations... but all are upstairs, in the 2nd floor. The first time we stayed here, 2 years ago, there was an old wood-paneled elevator, so getting to the 2nd floor with luggage wasn't so difficult. That elevator is currently being refurbished... so pack lightly if you go before September 2026! Also, even after getting to the 2nd floor, be aware that some rooms require going down some stairs from there.
Our room had a large closet, period furniture (dresser and one nightstand), small desk, and ceiling fan). There were few working electrical outlets. The one under the window had an expander that did most of the room's work. There was a hairdryer, iron, and small ironing board in the closet.
Complimentary coffee is available until 9 am upstairs, but it's weak. The coffee in the dining room costs $3, and is just as bad.
Staying at the lodge entitles you to use the state park facilities. You can swim in the river's clear spring water, jump from a variety of platforms, hike on the premises (there are many trails to explore), and make reservations for a one-hour boat ride along the river.
Our most recent visit was, unfortunately, at the start of spring break. When we returned after visiting the nearby St Marks wildlife refuge and lighthouse, there was a long line of cars waiting to get in. We waited in that line for about 25 minutes! Finding parking once in was not easy... and the beach area was crowded. I imagine the summer months might be the same. Our first visit there was on weekdays, when things were very calm.
