The other salesperson who wasn't helping me seemed shocked that I hadn't heard of it, and asked me where I was from. I told him that I lived in the city, and he followed up by asking where I get my denim. I named my go to brand and was absolutely shocked when he replied "Ew. That's so twenty years ago. The brands we have here are the top selling brands right now." Pro tip: insulting your customers is a great way to guarantee that they'll never come back. Also, the brand I referenced was launched less than ten years ago... rude and ignorant is a winning combination. I told my salesperson that I was no longer interested in buying anything because her colleague insulted me, and to her credit, she pulled me into a dressing room and offered me a 10% discount and waived the sales tax. She tried to get the other salesperson to say sorry but I wasn't interested in a fake apology. Needless to say I won't be back. The best part, I looked up the brand that the salesperson shamed me for not knowing and Urban Outfitters stocks it. The pinnacle of luxury denim, indeed.

The recipient of the gift in question seems to shop often and a lot. She seems to be great at guessing what brands people are wearing and knows styles from AX to H&M to Forever21. Yet, she enjoys receiving gifts from folks, just not from places she knows too well. So with that in mind and the help of some female friends who were already shopping, I somehow ended up here. Greenpoint Avenue isn't home to a lot of these types of businesses. This section of the Sunnyside neighborhood reminds me of the Steinway area in Astoria, except with less clothing stores and way more Hispanic businesses. Baby Blue stands out because I'm told this location is new and the clothes are affordable. Customer service was snooty to me and were generally not helpful. Maybe they thought I was some creepy, perverted male parading the store asking pseudo-superficial questions to pretend I was interested. In the end, I managed to find a "going out" top for $15 and apparently it was on sale. Best part though, was the gift made the birthday girl's night. She thought it was from one of her female friends, but was shocked to find out it was me. Ecstatic and impressed, she said she would be wearing this top soon. Her BF on the other hand asked me when I was going to start working there and I immediately became the hetero man's laughing stock. The laughing stopped as soon I as replied, "Yes, I'll get her a thong next time."

This place has been open for years, ever since I've worked in downtown Manhattan, Dijon has existed…read more(that's about 7 years now - wowsers)! And I never quite had the gall to review this place for fear of others knowing I sometimes drop in and buy what's on trend, if I like what I see. Now, after the major re-up, post-Sandy disaster, Dijon has moved one store down, and literally downsized to about half the space it used to have. The trade-off with this however, is a better organized, more streamlined store, and the shopping experience is boosted as a result. The window display is actually very inviting now, and looks like they hired a visual merchandising decorator or something. Before, you'd feel like you were shopping at the 99 cent store of clothing stores, but now, it actually feels like a boutique. Sort of. I did come in last night and buy three tops, and altogether it was less than $35. I mean, where does that happen anymore? Don't get me wrong, I love me my Forever21, but Dijon is a little more forgiving in terms of the sizes they have, being more womanly for those of us whose hips don't lie (thank you for that song, Shakira). They have name brands here, and as other reviewers have mentioned, the tags are usually ripped off or crossed out with what appears to be black ink from a Sharpie. That's cool Dijon, I ain't mad at ya. If you can get me LOFT, Banana Republic, GAP, etc for 1/5th the price, go ahead and tear up all the tags inside the clothes, I'm fine with that. Even if some items are out of season, or fit a little oddly, as they sometimes do, the store makes up for it, by trying its best to stay on trend and keep things fresh. Whenever I feel like getting new duds for a trip or vacation, I'm not against shopping here to get something that might not last forever, but is the flavor of the season and will look cute on me for all intents and purposes. They have a shoe section, which is akin to shopping at Target with how everything is laid out and displayed, but here again, they do carry name brands at attractive prices, so it's kind of pretty sweet, though the actual selection can sometimes be hit or miss. A lot of FiDi women shop here, and really no one is against saving some money, and that's why Dijon has lasted all these years. I've seen it.

It's a good place to get basics that you don't expect to wear for more than a few months (e.g. strange brands, all made in China). In that respect, Dijon/DJ aren't so interesting - there are similar shops all over the Financial District, not to mention all over this city. HOWEVER, if you have the time to hunt? De Janeiro/Dijon is a closeout clothing haven!! Banana Republic, Nine West, Gap, etc... Regular clothes in well-known brands are marked down 50-90%. Stuff may be from the previous season, or they may be from YEARS ago - as in the case of a Banana Republic blazer I snagged for $25, original price $240. From the 2010 season, but who the hell cares? If you're like me, you'll jump for glee when you see the label inside the collar markered over or cut out. Yay steep discounts! Head back frequently to check what's new in stock. Be prepared to swim through oceans of badly made clothes that are a waste of fabric.
