I share this story with the hope that no student will have to experience what i did. I came to Uprep as a confident and open minded kid, and left Uprep as an insecure teen with the worst self esteem I have ever had. I am a pretty social person, but no matter how hard i tried to fit in, i always felt excluded. Despite my efforts to involve myself in the community, students and staff members seldom went out of their way to make sure I was included. I often resorted to hiding in the locker room because i felt so ashamed and alone. Uprep pushes the narrative of belonging so much, that when i couldn't live up to it, I felt that there was something wrong with me. I made the difficult decision to leave Uprep during the school year, not because I wanted to, but because my mental health simply could not take it anymore. Years later, I can confidently say that was the best decision I have ever made for myself. No obstacle I face will ever be as emotionally damaging as the deliberate exclusion I experienced at Uprep. Although my mental heath significantly improved when I left, I struggled with my self confidence for years after. Feeling unworthy of friendship and community is a feeling I would never wish on anyone.

We love the warm, welcoming, inclusive community from the parents to the teachers to the staff. Classes are a great size, only 1 class per grade, with 2 teachers per class pre-school through 2nd grade. We are so fortunate for the before and after care program (called xcare), which also hosts full day summer camp. For 2 full time working parents, we wouldn't be able to make it work without xcare. The academic curriculum is top notch and well rounded from the Slingerland reading program to their math and science courses to a focus on the Arts (language, visual, music). Our Spanish program makes it fun for the kids to learn. The full time counselor focuses on the kids social and emotional growth, while there is a focus on bringing Catholic social teaching to life via numerous volunteering opportunities. Our Lady of the Lake is not just our school, it's our family!

We have loved this place…read more We've been with U Co-op for the last two years, with almost a year and a half of that during the pandemic. I can't express how incredible the school has been. The most extraordinarily compassionate teachers and staff, and a parent community that has been supportive, resourceful, kind and caring. There is a warmth to the building (which we are thankfully back in - and masked) that we fell in love with from the first tour. It didn't feel cold or modern; it felt like creativity and childhood. There are nooks for reading, spaces for found art, paintings up everywhere. The teachers allow the children to follow their curiosity and even adjust the lessons to be relevant to the things that interest them. The kids are learning just as much as peers at other schools, but in a way that focuses on their self development and self esteem. This school has been a great find and has helped carry us through this difficult stretch.

They share the most beautiful pictures of his day, and I'm in awe of how much they can fit in between 9 am and 1 pm. A typical day can include an art project (my son recently made planets out of papier mache), a food project (today was sushi rolls), time romping around Ravenna Park, circle time for songs and sign language, and story time during lunch. They even take the bus and light rail to visit different parts of the city. Christi and Susanne exude this amazing calm, loving, fully present energy with the kids, always observing and affirming their budding strengths. I honestly can't imagine a better preschool experience for little ones! There is the extended day option as well, which goes until 5, I think.

Andy Smallman went above and beyond in helping me feel heard and offered suggestions for other support in the Seattle area (our son is a 5th grader and not qualified). I cannot give Spring a higher recommendation. Our entire Spring experience by far exceeded our…read morefamily's expectations. Our student came in feeling discouraged and disconnected from learning. Her experience at Spring built up her confidence and helped her develop independent study skills in a positive environment. Their approach intentionally fosters students to develop motivation from within. The teachers are skilled and patient, meeting the student where they are at and helping them discover their own interests and goals. The administration is communicative, organized, and hands-on. The head of the school, Andy, has a genuine passion for students and their learning experience. While I was a little hesitant about the non-traditional approach when I first heard of Spring, my first conversation with Andy gave me an instant wave of relief. He knew exactly how to help when we were at a loss of how best to do so. Out of the gate, he understood our goals as parents and our student's goals for herself, empathized with challenges we'd experienced, and explained how the structure and curriculum of Spring is designed to nurture students and embrace their strengths. Our student maintained a hybrid schedule between Spring and public school; we started with one class at Spring, but after seeing the improvement all around, shifted more of her core classes over and maintained electives at public school. They were flexible and helped us with all transitions, including helping with credit transfer. What I appreciate most is the shift we saw at home -- no more constant tension over homework, incentives and punishments, disciplined schedules and nagging. Spring stepped in with the kind of support I'd been trying to provide on my own, allowing me to take a giant step back, and our student to take gain independence and ownership of her obligations. We are all breathing easier! Thank you, Spring!

I asked him recently what he liked most about Perkins, and he said, "the community -- I really liked the teachers and the kids." His teachers prioritized getting to know him; at our first parent-teacher conference, we were amazed when his teacher described details of his strengths and weaknesses the same way we would have. We watched his confidence grow as he was challenged in ways that felt supportive. That foundation has truly paid off--he's thriving in middle school, both academically and socially. We are forever grateful for the love and care the entire Perkins community showed our son and our family.

Unlike many other independent schools, Perkins places a very high level of importance on building community within the school, and on the social and emotional health of each child. Perkins has a down-to-earth, kind and loving feel that runs through the faculty, staff, parent community and the kids. It's such a rare find! In addition to building a strong academic foundation for success, every Perkins student enjoys the experience of being truly known by every teacher, and most of the students know each other. This creates a truly "small town" community feel and one that is overwhelmingly positive! This school does differentiate for ability in the core subjects, and also provides enriching "specialist" subjects for a well-rounded overall education. We can't imagine our kids being anywhere else!
