Our experience with Seattle Learning Center has been extremely positive. From the very beginning, the staff made our family feel welcome and supported. The teachers are caring, patient, and genuinely invested in each child's growth and well-being. One of the things we appreciate most is the balance between education and play. The daily activities are thoughtfully planned and help children build important social, emotional, and academic skills. Communication with families has also been excellent. Staff members regularly share updates about daily activities, progress, and any important information, which helps parents feel connected and reassured. SLC has created a positive community amongst the families. Both of our kids attended SLC from 2020-2026 and we have been incredibly happy every step of the way. The teachers are so nurturing and engaged. They work to build a community amongst families. They take them on field trips and to the park and pea patch. My kids have learned so much and were more than prepared for Kindergarten. The classes are small enough that every child is cared for and they also have plenty of opportunities to develop independence. Our daughter attended Seattle Learning Center on Boston St. in Queen Anne from Nov 2022 to May 2024, and we couldn't have been happier. The staff is incredible and they truly care about the kids. We loved how the kids were outside every day, rain or shine, often going on neighborhood walks and getting plenty of fresh air. The center also organized regular events that involved parents, creating a great sense of community. One of our favorite features was the Parent Date Night. Finding high-quality childcare is really hard. When my husband (he posted his own review to share his perspective) and I were informed that there was an opening at the SLC Montlake location, we were cautiously optimistic. The center is well-reviewed, close to our new home, and it had the critical characteristic of having an opening. In retrospect, I should have been more weary given that every other established childcare facility we visited was at capacity and/or had a wait list, and this one had two open slots. I'll start with the good: the teachers were all very nice to us and flexible about helping our toddler transition into her new care environment. I think there is probably at least one really talented and caring teacher there. The first red flag: During my early visits (as part of our transition plan and during the first few days at drop off or pick up when I would stay longer), I began to worry that while the kids seemed to be safe, I didn't really observe the teachers actively engaging the kids in meaningful ways. I've had the privilege of seeing high-quality, play-based education at my older daughter's former daycare and current preschool, and this seemed far from it. The kids seemed fine (i.e. clean and fed), but bored (toys and books were sparse) and hungry for deeper engagement with the adults. Nevertheless, I was willing to suspend judgement and give it a shot. The second red flag: we were warned at orientation that biting was a fairly frequent occurrence at the school. I have an older child that's been in group care and the idea of biting being an issue is not news. But when we inquired about the frequency, we were essentially told that while a biting incident does not happen every day necessarily, it could be several times a week that there is a biting incident. This is not consistent with what I've heard from other parents and the many other preschools and daycare centers I've met with over the years. But again, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt even though my mommy spidey-senses were telling me this wasn't going to be a good place for my daughter. Lesson learned: always listen to your mommy spidey-senses. Our toddler seemed to transition fine initially and had the usual crying at drop-off during the first few days, but was napping well, and adjusting to the routines. We noticed, however, that almost overnight, our toddler's behavior changed. She went from a happy, independent, and precocious toddler to becoming uncharacteristically aggressive. She began hitting and kicking every member of our family; pinching people; and biting toys and books when upset--all new behavior that started within days of joining SLC. She also became extremely clingy and a generally very unhappy person with near constant whining or crying at home. It was a really tough first week, but I figured hey -- it's the first week. Maybe this is part of the process. By the end of the second week, her behavior had gotten markedly worse. She stopped sleeping at night; she was pushing and hitting our older daughter with no provocation; she was waking with what seemed to be nightmares and was punching me at night. My toddler's behavior at home became untenable and unrecognizable. We decided we needed a meeting with her caregivers. In the process of trying to coordinate a meeting and watching our formerly happy and independent toddler turn into a crying, violent, and clingy creature at home, my husband and I stopped to reflect and made the decision to immediately pull her out of SLC. The dramatic and intensifying shift in our child's behavior seemed to go beyond the usual adjustment pains; it was the biggest and most important of red flags. We still don't know what was behind it. We had hoped to have a conversation with SLC. But once we gave them notice of our deciding to leave the facility, communication basically stopped. We had hoped to have a conversation about whether it seemed appropriate to still bill us for a whole other month since our daughter was only at SLC for 11 days, and we weren't exactly taking up the slot of another paying family, but communication at that point was nonexistent. To be clear, it's not that we were unwilling to pay for a full other month; it just seemed worth a conversation, alongside a discussion of what might have caused such a dramatic shift in our daughter's behavior. After a week or so of no response (except for receiving our final bill via email), my husband finally got a call from one of the co-owners, who focused the entire phone conversation on payment and contract, instead of addressing our broader questions and concerns. As a working mom, pulling your child out of care without a back-up is a really tough decision, but there is no question in my mind that it was the right one. Our experience with management in the aftermath affirmed my suspicions that facilitating learning and providing high-quality care is not this center's first priority. read more

My son started at SLC Montlake when he was four months old and was there for two years. The only reason we moved on from SLC is the Montlake program (at least at the time, possibly different now) only went up to 36 months, and the Queen Anne location wasn't feasible for our commute. I didn't know what to expect from a daycare, having no prior point of reference. But it didn't take long to fall in love with the staff at SLC. It truly felt like family, from the big hugs he'd get as soon as we dropped him off to the funny stories we'd hear at the end of the day. My son still talks about his teachers at the "old school," even a year into his new daycare. The first thing I noticed about SLC was that they are pretty informal. I must admit that I at first interpreted this as being disorganized. I quickly learned, though, that they had their sh*t together. I always got pictures of my son's activities throughout the day (a good mix of free play and guided sensory activities), and his teachers took careful accounting of what he was eating / drinking / expelling out the other end. I never had any doubt that he was in competent, loving care. Being the mother of a big eater, I can't write a review about SLC without mentioning the wonderful food. The cook, Marissa, provided a wide variety of healthy foods to the kids. (And, the staff was very careful not to introduce new foods to the infants unless the parents said it was okay.) Marissa would even, on occasion, saute some mushrooms especially for my son, as she knew it was his absolute favorite food. I appreciated that the staff helped the kids learn to drink from cups (not sippy cups) in the toddler room, and even bus their plates after meals. Another thing I liked about SLC was that the staff - including Lily, the owner - had a really solid background in child development. SLC even put on occasional parent education nights. As a new parent it was really nice to get some above-and-beyond guidance on how to ensure we were providing consistency for our son whether at school or at home. There are so many other things to say about SLC, but I don't want to go on forever. So, I'll just say that I feel really lucky that we got into the program when my son was so young, and we continue to think of the teachers and other parents there as part of our extended community. read more

I was an SLC Montlake parent for 52 continuous months, from when my first child was 12 weeks old to when my second child was a few days shy of three. This is probably a record. :) (Side note: That means I wrote checks totaling over $100K, but that's childcare! :) ) Our family continues to go back to visit teachers and attend good-byes and holiday parties. How could we not? Our early years of parenthood, the amazing adventure from infant to kid, is completely inseparable from SLC. Seeing the anxious look of new parents at their first dropoffs was always just an amazing reminder of what a journey it is. The loving, safe, nurturing, thoughtful, kind, clever teachers at SLC were there to help us, reassure us, root us on, give us advice, and 100 other things. It's a small place happy to make adjustments for each child -- not many places would have endured our commitment to cloth diapers as just one of many examples. Another example that comes to mind is that when it was time for our kids to transition to the toddler room, the teachers spent weeks doing it gradually and thoughtfully. The community is great too -- we're still friends with several other families we met at SLC. The scramble for daycare, particularly infant daycare, is of course crazy in Seattle. I recommend SLC Montlake to every expectant parent I know, understanding full well that this is a momentous decision, nothing like recommending a plumber or a car model! (This will sound ironic, but I would never rely on yelp for such a decision!!) read more

We sent both of our daughters to the Seattle Learning Center Montlake location starting when each of them was about 6 months old. We loved the size and family feel of SLC: the way we got to know the other parents and kids, the infant and toddler room teachers, the other staff in the building. We also loved how the toddlers and infants got exposure to each other all the time -- in larger daycare there's never any interaction between the two, and the graduation from infant to toddler room is much more jarring. When our older toddler got into a pre-school near where we work and live, we were extremely sad to have to move our younger daughter out of SLC before she could experience the toddler room. (We moved both girls to keep our commute sane.) The only silver lining to having left SLC is that some of our daughters' favorite teachers are now occasional babysitters. We still go back for the SLC summer barbecues, brunches and fundraisers to see the teachers and other parents. We miss SLC! read more

Seattle Learning Center is an absolutely amazing place for infants and toddlers. What they need most at that age is precisely the loving and caring environment that they will find here. The teachers have really created a community feel: going trick or treating together, having potlucks, etc. It's such a wonderful community that we often go back for events even now that our child has moved onto other things, simply because we miss the teachers who became like family. And while the teachers love the kids and are often engaged in activities with them, I always appreciated how much they encouraged the kids to play with each other (even as babies), intervening when they needed to to encourage respectful play (as much as one can with teething babies and toddlers throwing tantrums). I noticed a couple of reviews from two parents of the same child, who seemed to have had a bad experience. I'm so sorry that it didn't work out for them, I know how difficult childcare is. And I just have to say that this was completely opposite of our experience of SLC. I always felt reassured leaving my infant son (who started at only 4mo old), knowing he would be loved and taken care of while I was at work. I always found that the teachers took extra time to try to work out concerns with us and were completely understanding of us crazy parents. If I ever sent an email after hours (which was typical with my own work schedule), I was always surprised to see a quick response even late in the evening. Transitions are difficult for babies and toddlers (and parents), but I just can't imagine any place to be better at helping kids at these ages get through these transitions. I couldn't recommend this place more highly! read more

We love SLC Montlake. Our son started there when he was 8 months old, and we plan to keep him there as long as they let us! I was the typical nervous first-time mom and the initial transition was typically tough, but the teachers were terrific about keeping me informed with compassion and competence. I can't say enough good things about every single teacher; we love each of them so much, and more importantly, they truly love the kids. Plus they have very little turnover - we've only had one teacher leave in the 10 months we've been there - which is huge in daycare land. They only hire the best and it really feels like a community. My two kids went to the Montlake location, and we LOVE it. Each morning starts with big smiles as my daughter is getting so many hugs and kisses from the family-like staff. The teachers are energetic, loving and warm. I'm so lucky to send my kid to a daycare that is full of laughter and positiveness. During the day the kids are encouraged to explore, play, develop social skills, be independent and spend time outside. The home-made, healthy, delicious food is just the icing of the cake for us. We are an Italian family and we relocated to Seattle from Italy in January 2019. Our younger kid, 3.5 years old, attended SLC in Boston St and we could not have been happier. All the family-like staff has been amazing and caring with him. Our son had a very smooth transition, even if he did not speak English at the beginning. Teachers and staff have been incredibly patient and helpful, filling the communication gap with love and hugs. In a few months, we have seen our son grow, get confidence with other kids and with the new language, while at the same time being always happy every morning to go to school. When my daughter started at Seattle Learning Center, adjustment to her new schedule and being dropped off every morning actually went pretty well. However, almost immediately, our previously happy and independent toddler started to exhibit troubling new behaviors at home. She stopped sleeping well. She became extremely clingy, never wanting to be set down or left alone. And out-of-the-blue she started hitting. I wanted to believe that all of this behavior was a symptom of first week jitters. But as we entered the second week of care, everything got much worse. I started to pay greater attention at pick up and drop off, and noticed a few worrying things: Teachers mostly "managed" the kids. I did not see much proactive engagement with the toddlers. Staff were rarely down at the level of the child, engaging with them, and fostering learning or play. I saw my own child ignored once after she made multiple direct requests to a teacher. On two occasions I saw one particular teacher abruptly steer (grab and rotate) a child after a first attempt at verbal direction was not successful. Outdoors in the yard, staff mostly sat while kids milled around. When a kid approached and engaged with a teacher, the child was usually directed away toward playing with the other kids. At no time did I see a teacher embrace an opportunity for excited play with the kids. (This is particularly perplexing, given that one of SLC's core values is physical fitness. What better time to be physically active than at play in the yard?) At the end of week two, I was very worried that SLC was not a good fit for my daughter. I tried to urgently arrange a conference with the teaching staff, but they were unable schedule a meeting within a few days. Home life was in unsustainable disarray with all of my daughter's new sleep and behavior problems. And although there were some positives within the classroom environment, the overall picture I was getting was negative. So I decided to pull my daughter out of SLC after just two weeks, despite a hefty cancellation fee and challenges with finding short-notice replacement care. Upon emailing notice of our immediate withdrawal, I got a cordial but short email, effectively saying "Ok, thanks. Best wishes!" No request for an exit interview, or even an informal email soliciting feedback. What I did receive was a very formal email from SLC's billing person, notifying me that final fees would be withdrawn immediately (instead of on the first of the month, per our contract). I waited 24 hours for any other messages. Nothing. In the hopes of getting some additional communication (and a few questions answered), I drafted a lengthy email to the person I had dealt with the most throughout our enrollment. Nothing. I waited almost a week, and then followed up with another short message asking for a response--from her, or any administrator at SLC. Nothing. Out of desperation for some sort of reply, I emailed a third time, stating that I would put a hold on my bank account (possibly delaying final payment) until I heard back from someone at SLC. After a week of non-communication, the threat of a delayed payment got me a personal phone call from the co-owner in one hour! The call did not go well. The co-owner started by focusing on payment and our contract. I redirected him to my actual priority--the communication problems over the past week, and our desire to have some sort of follow-up. I still hoped (and assumed) that he would show concern that a client family had a bad experience. His response? "There is nothing in the contract about communication." When I expressed shock at that reply, he suddenly conjured an explanation that the administrator I had emailed a week earlier was "out of the country". While I cannot prove that this was a lie, I can say that my email to the administrator was sent the very next day after she emailed me. She had made no mention of an upcoming absence. I received no out-of-office auto reply to any of my emails to her. And if the owner was telling the truth--no one was apparently reading the main enrollment inquiry email account in her absence. Pretty hard to believe... I did finally get some follow-up from two previously uninvolved staffers. But it was too little too late, and honestly I still don't have all of my concerns addressed. My child had a bad experience at SLC. If the problems stopped there, this would still be a 3-Star review. What takes this to a 1-star review is my experience after care ended. The tone deaf and unprofessional treatment went right up to the owner. And bad values and practices don't just waste time, cause frustration, and leave a bad taste in the mouth; they likely trickle down to the care that the children receive. read more

We sent our son to toddler room at SLC Montlake for nearly two years and couldn't have been any happier with the care he received there. The classroom was warm and welcoming, and my son had a blast playing with his friends outdoors. I can't say enough about how caring, attentive, and responsive the teachers were. We love SLC Queen Anne. We moved our 4 year old from another local daycare center because we heard such good things and wanted to be on QA hill. She is so happy in the preschool class and enjoys all her friends. There is a strong community among the families attending and I love how the preschool teachers have a creative curriculum and take them on field trips locally. We can't say enough good things. At the beginning of the year, we enrolled our 2 1/2 year old at Seattle Learning Center on Boston St. and we are so lucky to have found such a caring, friendly, supportive environment for our daughter's first school. Many reviews here mention the family-like staff, which is a great description of the people who work at SLC. Within a week or two I was on a first name basis not only with my daughter's teachers and the school administrators, but other teachers and staff at the school also. This review is actually for the Montlake center of SLC. I highly highly recommend Seattle Learning Center, so much so that both of our young daughters go to SLC. Any parent can tell you that finding childcare is a daunting process. When it was time to look for daycare centers I figured I had to temper my expectations between what I hoped for, and what was offered. We had our sights set on bright horizons, and on paper, they sound great. They have 2 trained chefs on staff, as well as a very structured program. However, it was a very cold and sterile environment. I did not see one hug being given, not even one high-five. During my orientation at bright horizons I saw 6 infants strapped to a huge stroller waiting in the lobby for almost 15 minutes. No one engaged the infants or talked to them. The minder of the stroller was standing behind the stroller talking with the reception staff. I tried to push my worries aside because everyone says bright horizons is the best childcare. I had huge concerns as the south lake union center had construction right next door to the center and the children spend time outside everyday. Also, the bright horizons on west 8th in downtown Seattle was a bit rude to us and I was hung up on twice when I called them. I still tried to push my fears aside and push forward with bright horizons. By chance my husband found Seattle Learning Center on yelp and we figured since we already waited 4 months for bright horizons to have an opening we might as well look at other places as well. As luck would have it, SLC was just opening their Montlake center and luckily, we were able to attend their orientation. From the moment we stepped into the center we knew this was the place for our daughter. You could feel that the teachers genuinely care about the children. When they ask after my children you know that they have genuine interest and aren't just being polite. They may not have the trained chef bright horizons has, but they have a accomplished care taker and grandmother, Marissa putting love into every single one of the meals she cooks there. In the infant room, where my older daughter started out and my youngest still resides, they have Miss Marissa, Miss Camille, and Miss Jackey. After my youngest was born I felt quite overwhelmed with going back to work and having two young children in daycare, but everyone in the infant room made my transition back to work very easy. In my grandmother's day, she still had community and family around her to help her raise her children. In today's modern world, I lack that familial community, but SLC was able to recreate an urban community for my children. When I drop off my youngest in the infant room I feel as if I'm greeted by my sisters. If my baby is crying the come over to hold her so that I can leave for work. They sing my baby songs, hold my baby if she's sad, they know what toys she prefers, and they make sure she's developing appropriately and enforce tummy time. Every single day that I drop off my daughter in the infant room, Miss Jackey, Miss Camielle, and Miss Marissa make me feel as if I'm dropping off my daughter with her favorite aunts and grandmother. My older daughter is in the toddler room, and Lily has done a wonderful job staffing the toddler room. Miss Meghan and Miss Allison always stop whatever they are doing to greet any toddler that comes to school. They start off with a welcome song, then spring into art time, which my daughter loves. They then go into circle time to sing songs and read books. My daughter might be the most eager for circle time as she runs to get a circle mat every single day. I don't know how they do it, but at daycare, they're able to get my daughter to eat a huge lunch and enforce her to sleep during nap time. What I like most is that Miss Meghan has started to work with each toddler one-on-one. At 20 months of age my daughter has a ton of words, she can put on her own coat and shoes, she is pretty good at potty training, and shows great strides towards empathy. Watching her grow at SLC gives me the confidence to say that she will be ahead of the game when it's time for pre-school and kindergarten. SLC really does deserve more than a five star review, it really is as good as it gets! This center recreates the loving community that you hope your children grow up in! This is a truly wonderful daycare. Our son has been both at the Montlake location from 4 months of age to 20 months and now attends the Queen Anne location in the Sunshine room. The care that goes into hiring the teachers is obvious - they have dedicated, sincere and loving staff who truly care for the children with kindness and patience. They focus on play and the education here is equally focused on building interpersonal and motor skills. We feel like our son is in a very special place with caretakers that are invested in his development. I highly recommend both locations! read more

We have two boys who have both been at SLC Montlake location since they were 12 weeks old. My older son (who is now 2.5) even asks to go to daycare on the weekend! My younger son, now 11 months, is thriving there as well. In both the infant and toddler rooms, the teachers make the kids feel at home -- providing a loving mix of affection and education. The kids are stimulated, happy, encouraged to learn, and allowed to be themselves. The classroom and outdoor spaces are small and cozy. To my sons, these areas provide endless entertainment with their friends! Deciding where to send your kids for 8 hours a day can be challenging and fraught with anxiety. I am so happy to have my kids at SLC! I feel confident in the my children's care, safety, and development. We were also initially hesitant to send our children here due to the negative reviews but we gave it a chance and have had a great experience at this center. Both kids are excited to go to daycare everyday and they love their teachers (and I think it is mutual!). The center maybe doesn't appear as sterile or organized as a larger center like This (I could see this bothering some parents) but our kids are safe and happy here. read more

This review is for the center on Queen Anne. My child has been there a year and now goes to another school. The teachers for the 2/3 year olds were great - lots of fun projects and tons of interactive play. Our problem started with the PreK classroom. Tons of turnover in teachers. Lack of learning all together. My child never learned anything more than what I was teaching At home. Emails are sent home about the curriculum but there is no evidence whatsoever that students were taught any of it. Parents are left guessing if their child is really prepared for kindergarten. Which is awful for the steep price. The worst are the "bland" teacher/parent conferences that evaluate everything you already know about your own kid!!! I took the evaluation binder to my child's new school, and they bluntly told me it was a waste of paper with no facts of child development or learning abilities. And no mention of what the child will need to get ahead. Just no facts. Overall, this place ended up being a very expensive daycare for 4yr olds and we ultimately had to leave. The director is nice! And lunches/snacks are very good. They do a great job on vegetarian lunches. But spend your money elsewhere. There are definitely much better facilities where there is a solid curriculum and your child will be prepared for kindergarten. read more

Our daughter went to Seattle Learning Center in Montlake and we could not be happier with our experience. The teachers were so friendly and loving to our daughter. What won us over on our tour was seeing teacher Gerelyn out in the yard with kids climbing all over her, it was clear to see how much they loved being in her company. Our daughter also loved playing with Teacher Betina who would sometimes lay with our daughter during nap times to keep her company as she decided napping was not for her at a very early age. Marissa always greeted us at the door with a smile and great conversation while she was preparing breakfast or a snack. Our daughter grew so much in her couple of years at SLC, she even came home and started taking her plate to the kitchen when she finished dinner (to my surprise but she learned it at SLC) and made her first friends there. We were excited to find a daycare in our neighborhood and feel so lucky to have also had such a wonderful experience. read more

Seattle Learning Center has been a great gift to our family. I am so thankful there is a safe, fun, educational place to take my 3-year-old son. It is a wonderful environment for learning and growing. He especially enjoys the P.E. time where they do an obstacle course and practice martial arts moves. The teachers are very thoughtful and always quick to give me a report of how that day went and how they see my son improving. This experience has given me (and my son, though he may not know it) more confidence for when he goes to school. read more

Our 2-year-old loves it. It's a very bright, very spacious and very safe environment for the little ones. The teachers are loving and attentive. They even ask for feedback which is extremely nice. You feel that they want you and your child to be happy there. They take them for walks but they keep them very active when they are inside. If you are looking for half day child care that follows the school calendar, this is the place! The two teachers are fabulous. Ms. Lily and Ms. Lindsay have much experience and both have higher education degrees in child development. Both teachers always took the time to discuss my sons development on a daily basis when needed. My son who started at two loved everything about the SLC. They mix up the activities, give the kids lots of exercise and are extremely supportive. I have to admit I was amazed when my son was 26 months old and broke out into the ABC's and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. We had not been practicing either song and he knew them from start to finish. I highly recommend SLC to any parent looking for half day child development. The current space is open, safe and extremely light which I found to be different than most of the child development centers I visited. They also have quick access to SPU's track for outdoor exercise. The kids are always given breakfast, snacks and lunch too. An added bonus was that Ms. Lily posted weekly pictures of the children on her secure site for us to enjoy and download. Our son has attended SLC for the past year and we absloutely LOVE it! The staff is enthusiastic, educated, and truly have interest in the children's learning and development. Lily, the owner of SLC, is an organized leader and runs this learning center with the children in mind. What I love most about her is her interest in continuing education with respect to early childhood development and teaching methods that she then educates the teachers on. Finally, and most importantly, our son loves his days here and talks enthusiastically about his teachers and his friends. Every day he comes home, he is full of new knowledge and excitement. We are expecting our second and can't wait until they are able to attend! Oh, one more positive that I really appreciate about SLC is the sense of community; 4 family potlucks a year, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Mother's day and Father's day celebrations and regular parent teacher conferences keep us very involved with SLC despite being busy working parents. read more
