My experience with EatWith was about a month ago, during a trip to Spain. My husband and I were only in Barcelona for 3 days but thought that the concept sounded pretty awesome - to eat at a local's house and get local food - all of it sounded like the perfect meal to me and made me feel a bit like Anthony Bourdain. Unfortunately no chefs had signed up for the nights that we were available, but I saw that one chef's meals looked awesome and requested the date for dinner. Chef Daniel got back to me within 24 hours and a reservation was confirmed. Couldn't have been easier!
Now on to the actual dinner. We had set the dinner for a Tuesday starting at 8:30 PM, but with travelling and being on vacation, etc I completely thought that the dinner was on Wednesday night. At 9:50 PM Tuesday night, my husband and I were trying to figure out what to do for dinner when I saw an e-mail from the EatWith team asking me if I had gotton lost! We hauled ass to Chef Daniel's house and got there at about 10 PM - only 1.5 hours late! Joel, one of the EatWith reps in Barcelona greeted us at the door and walked us upstairs to the apartment where we were given more hugs and warm greetings from Chef Daniel and his wife. After profusly apologizing, we were taken to the dinner setting, which was a on the rooftop of his apartment building. The roofdeck was just the perfect ambience for dinner - it was spacious and beautifully decorated with lights strung and plants, pictures, etc. There were about 6 other people having dinner, including Guy - one of the founders of EatWith, and other diners, as well as personal friends of Chef Daniel.
Chef Daniel and his wife didn't skimp on anything or rush us through any part of the dinner at all. The others had gone through the apps and first course by the time we had gotten there, but they insisted on making sure we had our fair share of the food, which was definitely more than we could have ever asked for. We were presented with a meat and cheese board, tomato bread, chilled soup similar to gazpacho, pan seared fish on top of small clams, roasted pork with root vegetables, and a wonderful creamy dessert. Everything was amazing from beginning to end and it made is really feel like we were at a Michelin starred restaurant (did I say chef Daniel works at a Michelin starred restaurant). Not only was the food just spectacular, but the company was just awesome as well. We got to hear Guy's and Joel's stories firsthand and it was awesome to hear about their vision and inspiration. We also spoke with other tourists and locals and got some of the best recommendations.
After dinner, it started raining, so we made our way downstairs to the apartment where the wine and champagne poured freely as everyone continued to hang out. Chef Daniel and his wife were just the best hosts, making sure that all glasses were filled and everyone was comfortable. What was even more impressive was that I noticed the Chef's kitchen was tiny- 4 burner stove, small counterspace....and it was all SPOTLESS by the time we made it back down to the apartment for drinks. How he ever made all the food is just beyond me.
What was so great about the night was not just the meal but the whole experience in itself. My husband and I hands down agreed it was the best night we had on vacation. When we got there at 10, we almost expected to be turned away (or get some cold leftovers), but no. Everyone went over and above our expectations. No one made a big fuss about us being so late, everyone just said, 'It's Spain! No one eats til 10 anyway!' We met some amazing people, heard some wonderful stories, and had the best experience ever. What's even better is that EatWith seems to be expanding rapidly to other countries, so will be sure to check in to see if my next vacation can also incorporate another meal like this. read more
