It's within walking distance of a Deen supermarket, the train station, and the town of Zaandam, which has plenty of cafes, bars, falafel/currywurst/broodje shops, as well as nice views of the water. We got a suite at the hotel, which provided adequate space for 4 adults. The A/C was a little difficult to configure, as was the safe, but there was a kitchenette equipped with silverware, plates, mugs, and a large table to sit at. The bathroom is considered huge for Europe. Breakfast is 10 euros p/p at the hotel, and I think it's worth it. It is served in the restaurant downstairs, which is cute and airy, and there's a solid variety of food offered. The breads are freshly baked and the espresso machine makes great coffee!

It's spacious,…read moremodern, and offers a decent value if you are willing to sacrifice the convenience of being in Amsterdam - comparable to Amsterdam but larger rooms. Rooms: Spacious rooms that looked like a normal US hotel room - office desk, closet, room to walk around all sides of the bed. Thermostat on wall to control temperature. Multiple TV stations in both, English and Dutch. Bathroom: Some rooms come with the transparent glass door that offers minimal privacy. Our double room had the glass door but it was frosted and the walls were painted white, but our suite room had a glass door. The shower had a glass door with a dark laminate tile that gave a modern, upbeat feel. Train station is about 5 min walk and it costs 3.60Euros and 15 min ride each way into Amsterdam Central Station. Bar is available on the ground floor and elevator worked which are big ++ for us.

About a week before our planned trip we got word that a very close family member in portland oregon was dying, so we had to go there and postpone our trip to this hotel. I contacted the hotel, again through hotels.com, with new dates for the reservation and requested that they change the dates on my booking.. They responded by saying that because I had booked a non-refundable rate they would not be able to either refund or simply change the dates on my reservation.. I did not want a refund. I just wanted the new dates. but it seems that this hotel. It's more interested in getting my $800 without having to provide any servives. Things happen in every one's life that make changes like this necessary, especially the deaths of a close family member. If the rates for my suggested new dates were higher, than simply tell me what the difference is and I will pay that. But don't just flatly say no to any options. This is not the way to run a good business. For that reaon I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone.

    ### AVOID THIS HOTEL! TOTAL SCAM!…read more We booked two double-bed rooms at the Zaan Hotel Amsterdam **a month in advance** and paid upfront, only to arrive and find out they gave our rooms to someone else. We had a late check-in after a long flight from the U.S., arriving at 11 PM, and they had no suitable rooms for us. The hotel is supposed to be a 4-star establishment near downtown Amsterdam with a rating of 9.2, but it certainly didn't live up to that. Instead of the two double-bed rooms we booked, they offered us a single-person room at the same price we prepaid. They refused to offer us another similar accommodation or a refund. We spoke to Anthony at reception, who was unhelpful and unapologetic, leaving us stranded with nowhere to sleep after a long journey. The hotel was already mad expensive, and we paid $1,000 for our rooms. This is clearly a scam. Save your money and avoid this hotel at all costs. They overbook and then don't honor their commitments, leaving you high and dry. Terrible experience. Absolutely do not come here!

Amsterdam is the dream city to visit for anyone new to Europe (speaks english, clean, easy to…read moretravel, one united system of bus/train/tram, and 20 mins from all the fun great things to do in the countryside like windmills and fishing village). This hotel is 1 stop down from Amsterdam Centraal. It is in a quiet, chill, and restful spot. If you're someone who's been doing heavy traveling and want a tranquil stay with modern and nice amenities, I highly recommend this place. It was the best hotel I've stayed so far in Europe and I intend to stay in Mercure hotels going forward. Location of this hotel is literally across the street from the Sloterdijk station. Very safe walk even if at night. There's a SPAR along your way for any last min essentials. Highly recommend the day passes to travel out to fun areas. The staff were very kind and friendly. Front desk is smooth, mint water, gave out cookies and rubber duckies for Christmas, fruits to snack on. Front area has 2 computers to use, nice electric fireplace. Building is tall and modern. Only thing is, it seems they are still under construction for the other half of all floors with rooms. I am not sure why, so it can be a little strange. Rooms: Large and spacious and modern. Some people will complain it's dark. I agree- the rooms are painted black and purple tones and feels dark. However, the closets have lights, the shower is luxurious (cloud shower), beds are super comfortable and compared to most European cramped hotel rooms, this feels luxurious and almost like American. Cleaning: If you actually leave the little note out there telling them your room really doesn't need to be cleaned, you can get 5$ a day off the Skylounge in coupons. I thought that was super neat. On my last day I had accumulated 10 $ and got to try their excellent Taglatelle pasta. Food: there is breakfast for about 22$ a person- a little pricy but compared to other continental breakfasts I've seen, they have a larger spread. They have fresh juices, herring, all kinds of cold cuts, fancy seating, great coffee machine and just a great spread. I highly recommend it if you are a big breakfast eater and are about to go out for the day and need a fuller meal.

I have waited a bit to write this review. I visited this hotel the first time around a week after…read morethey opened and that experience was not the best as they were perhaps not really ready to open at that time but it is a totally different experience after that. The hotel is in a convenient location for me when I travel for business to Amsterdam. As most of the business I do is at the airport I have often stayed there but after several visits per month for many years I was sick and tired of the airport hotels so this is easy access being next to Sloterdijk and also makes it easy to go into town for dinner. After the chaos of the first visit the service has been really good. Always friendly and fast at check-in and they keep track of loyalty benefits and special requests. The elevators at this place are a bit weird (no buttons in the elevator so need to select the floor outside) but now seems to work. They have a very small gym but I have never seen anyone else use it. The rooms are a bit dark but that is more a decoration choice and it works ok, just a bit weird with portraits on the wall staring at the bed. Everything is new and works well. They have the essentials so safe, mini-bar, TV, iron and ironing board. Free wifi is reliable and reasonably fast. The restaurant at the top floor is decent and prices are acceptable. Good selection of beer (some local craft ones) as well as ok wine selection. Food is not amazing but good enough for a hotel. The atmosphere is nice and there are plenty of seats. Breakfast is also served there and it is a nice and fresh breakfast.

I picked this DoubleTree because I wanted to use my Hilton points while staying in Amsterdam last…read moremonth. This DoubleTree was a lot less expensive than the DoubleTree near the Centraal train station. The reason? This NDSM location is a bit removed from the city center. You have to take a free ferry to access the NDSM Werf (Wharf) area. Luckily, the ferry has a large indoor section, because the weather in Amsterdam is often rainy and/or very windy. The staff at this DoubleTree was fantastic. They were always willing to provide extra DoubleTree cookies from their cookie warmer when we requested them. They also provided extra towels, bar soap, and wash cloths when we asked for them. We had a first floor room right behind the front desk, which was super convenient for entering and exiting the hotel. It was very quiet and we slept well. The room came with an extra roll-out bed. The hotel restaurant ("Brooklyn") served delicious lunches and dinners. It was a great choice when the weather was bad and we didn't want to venture out to the other NDSM restaurants (there are several nearby). We did not try the breakfast buffet, since it added a lot of cost to the room. Instead, we had coffee and pastries at a nearby NDSM coffee shop ("Carroll's"). We would definitely stay at this DoubleTree hotel next time we visit Amsterdam.
