I would leave zero stars if I could. I placed an online order for a fairly expensive bottle of bourbon I've been after. They asked for my address and zip code to form a shipping and total price quote. I place my order and minutes later I receive a cancellation email stating that it's illegal for them to ship spirits. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to remove the shipping option if that's truly the case. Either way, no sincere apology, nothing but a headache and a large sum of money tied up likely for days. I have been going to Eastside Cellars for about 6 months now. This is a wonderfully curated wine store; it carries wine from small producers and from many regions not just the famous ones. The staff is deeply knowledgeable and I have always been pleased by their recommendations. If you visit this store, take a moment to speak with the staff and tell them what you like or what you are cooking and watch them guide you to a wonderful bottle. The store also has a wall of "interesting wines," which either come from lesser known regions or are made from lesser known grape varietals. Made a pit stop here on the way home for some alcohol for an impromptu drinking session. My friend and I wanted Skyy vodka, but they only had flavored Skyy. We opted for the Skyy Blood Orange and a bottle of Svedka. The two guys working there were really nice and friendly and mentioned that the Skyy was on sale, which was a nice surprise. Great shop, (some) great prices, great service, educated sales staff who care about what they do. What more could a person want? I'm pretty comfortable around wine, because I worked in the trade for years, but I understand how it can be intimidating. Don't be afraid to ask questions...these people are excited about what they do, and they'll talk to you! I spend some time in NYC every year, and because I live in Texas, where wine distribution is pretty much a terrible monopoly, when I go to NYC I like to check out wine shops and pick up things I can't get back home. Eastside Cellars was a great find! I'll never understand people like Sally H. who give the lowest possible rating and engage in name-calling. I get the impression that it's the way the salesmen looked that caused her to do this, and not really the wines. Maybe the "no name" wines are expensive (not my experience, by the way), but the "with name" wines are definitely not overpriced, and there's always a deal to be had. read more

This is my new favorite wine store. They have the most extensive collection of wine geeky bottles that you don't see everywhere. They have the classics too. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. They don't just know about the wines, they often know about the winemakers. Oh most importantly, they are not snotty about it like other wine stores. I've never had a bad recommendation here, so tell them what you like and let them guide you. read more

I haven't had a wine from there I didn't like. It seems each bottle is hand selected, and most wines are from biodynamic vineyards, which is a huge plus. Abigail's wine shop is under new ownership and what a great difference that has made! I stopped in to get some wine for company that is coming tonight, but wasn't sure what to get. The staff made some great suggestions and I got to taste their featured wine. I ended up getting a bottle of that (a Portuguese red) and some Skinny Girl Margarita (it's difficult to find in the City). The cashier was very friendly (she had blonde hair and glasses) and she even had a biscuit for my dog. What a good (re)discovery! read more

a nice friendly liquor shop on the upper east side, 1st ave between 90th and 91st street. the place is compact and well organized with a large assortment of wines , spirits and all other booze that folks enjoy. the staff are friendly and helpful especially for folks who are clueless about booze like me. i needed a few bottles of wine for a dinner event i was invited to and the worker set me straight with a couple of top notch selections at really fair prices. when i happen to be inside getting some wine they had a table all set up for some free wine tasting from the france region and i try a bit which was not bad at all. a decent liquor shop for the locals in the area . read more

I have been purchasing wine and liquor from Eastside Cellars for almost half a year now and have never been impressed with their selections or their suggestions. I am not a picky wine drinker, however, I did grow up on the central coast of California, and have a true passion for good wine. Tonight, I purchased a bottle of wine that was suggested by a seemingly knowledgable and confident staff member, and unfortunately, found this wine to be oxidized. Like I said, I am not a picky wine drinker, but I do know when a bottle has turned based off of its vinegar-y taste and smell. This was also confirmed by the 5 people I was sharing this bottle with. 30 minutes after purchasing, I went back to the store and apologetically informed a staff member (who didn't sell me the bottle) that I believed the wine to be oxidized. He then smelled and tasted for himself and concurred that although this wine was "racey" to being with, it definitely did not taste normal. He politely started looking for another bottle to exchange, until his colleague came back into the cellar. Unfortunately, his colleague (who sold me the bottle) was not remotely as friendly or accommodating as he was. I understand returning a bottle of wine is uncomfortable, but this woman made this experience SO unfortunate. Without smelling or tasting the wine, she condescendingly told me there was no way that bottle could be turned. Without looking at me or stopping to have a genuine conversation, she went back to the fridge, grabbed a different bottle, and shoved it at me. She didn't apologize, she didn't listen, she didn't ask me what I would rather have, but she DID create a hostile environment. Feeling incredibly awkward and uncomfortable, I then apologized to HER, saying I have never returned a bottle of wine before in my LIFE, but this was truly un-drinkable... Instead of listening or looking at me, she defensively told me I was free to go and that I could leave her store. I have worked in customer service, and know that this is not the way to approach an uncomfortable situation! She made me feel stupid for coming back into the store and stupid for attempting a dialogue with her and her fellow employee. I left the store stunned and, quite honestly, heartbroken. I love supporting local wine shops, but will never again purchase wine from an establishment that condones this type of behavior towards their customers. Let alone, a loyal customer who has purchased wine from them countless times. Mr. Wright is an avenue away, and well worth the walk! read more

Today I decided to take to Yelp to see if there was an answer for my frustration with Upper East Side / Yorkville liquor stores. I can say that I'm thrilled to have stumbled upon Eastside Cellars, and will now make it my go to wine and spirits shop. First off, the Eastside Cellars layout is appealing. Upon walking it it is wide open, well organized, and clean. It is easy to find the section you are looking for - but hard to choose from all of the excellent options. I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff who were ready to help me find what I was looking for. We migrated to the whiskey section, where we discussed various Bourbon's and Rye's. After a few tastings, I found the perfect bottle I was looking for, and left happy. I signed up for their email list to keep in the loop about upcoming tastings, sales, and other special events. This is much more than a corner liquor store, it is a destination and note able upper east side fixture. I am looking forward to my next trip. read more

Hipster "friendly" salesmen selling no-name, overpriced wines to the unknowing. Many wines selling for $20-30 that are worth $8.

The new management has done a great job of bringing in high quality product at a great price. The store is much cleaner and the staff is much friendlier. If you were turned off by the previous management, give it another shot, you won't be disappointed. If they don't carry your favorite brand, just ask, they are very receptive and willing to please their customers. read more
