The people at this market are friendly and I like them. I don't know the reason, but all of the fish tanks were empty with no fresh/ live fish and the shelves were beginning to show some bald spots... sort of like me. Anyway, their ATM/Credit card reader was down so I didn't get to buy everything I wanted. I found out about this market from my mom's friend who had served up some really unique snacks at her house. I asked where to get them and she told me the Eastern Market on 23rd. And so I went... I recommend picking up some of the Japanese Rice Crackers in any of the flavors. You can ask the cashiers where to find the senbei and there's an entire isle devoted to these snacks. I enjoyed the togarashi (red chili pepper) senbei, but they come in all flavors, shapes and sizes. Very addicting and terrific to satisfy that crunchy, savory and umami craving. Definitely look for them... The other items I specifically came here for were the Croley Foods Buttercream Crackers. Again, ask the ladies at the cash registers as a lot of the products are not in English. They will gladly lead you to that section and answer any questions that you may have. Great customer service... I picked up all of the Buttercream flavors that they carried here [including the Buttercream Original, Ensaymada, Ube and Leche Flan] in this particular brand and absolutely love the thin, crisp, lightly sweet crackers. I highly recommend them and having them in-stock in your pantry for whenever guests drop by to eat while sipping on some coffee or tea. Overall, the store is very clean and they do offer a ton of hard-to-find Asian snacks that are high quality and very unique. They are pretty organized and it's like a treasure hunt discovering new and interesting products. It's a great resource for those who frequent Asian markets. Definitely go here. read more

With the help of this well stocked Asian market -there's not much you can't try to make at home. Pad thai, bulgogi, dim sum, miso soup or a crunchy katsu, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean... they have it all. A large selection of fresh produce and seafood. read more

This market is pretty decent, but there is still room for improvement. The space is quite large and it appears that they plan on adding some more prepared food items soon. The cashiers speak Mandarin and sometimes you will hear Cantonese with the customers. Sometimes in the front of the store you can find fairly fresh packages of roast duck (1/2 for $9.50), which my Mom loves. She re-heats it in the toaster oven to make the skin crispy. I recommend calling head to make sure that they have it in stock because they sell out quickly. There is also Chinese baked goods from Orlando on the same fixture, since they are sealed in plastic they are still soft. In the back, there is soy sauce chicken that is made daily. The produce is not the freshest, but I come here specifically for the Snow Pea Leaves for under $2 a bag to stir fry with garlic. There are seafood tanks in the back of the market and the prices are fairly low. They will catch the clean the fish for you at no additional charge. I hope to try their sliced conch in the future. As far as a Chinese grocery in the area, this is the largest and the prices are decent. I hope that their business continues to grow and they can add more BBQ items. I definitely recommend coming here over Chung Ching because of the cleanliness factor. read more

This is a fairly new--or at least recently relocated--Asian market in Gainesville and also one that is decently large and actually feels like a lot of the Chinese grocery stores I went to when I lived near Chinatown in San Francisco. They carry Japanese, Viet, and Thai products, but their main emphasis is on Chinese foodstuffs--especially Cantonese goods. To that end, they have an extensive seafood selection including live crabs and bass. This is something which is quite important to most Cantonese and Hakka Chinese: if you go into a proper Cantonese seafood restaurant in California, even, you'll note the presence of large tanks of live fish because freshness is essential to the Cantonese. The butcher department and produce section at New Asia are both also pretty impressive and it is really quite hard to imagine any common Chinese foods or cooking goods which you wouldn't be able to find here. The staff are also very friendly and helpful, though beware, on some days it gets pretty busy and check-out lines can be long. read more

If there's an option for 0 star, I will go for that for sure. Bought a gift card like 1 or 1.5 years ago and didn't visit there for a while because we need to take care of our newborn baby. I went there today and was told I cannot use this card anymore. They changed system and all money in the card became in vain. When asked if there's any way to honor the gift card purchased, they responded rudely to me saying "Why you didn't come in the past year?" and told me totally my fault not visiting the store. WOW and I thought the Asian Market at 34th and Archer was nice. This place has two or three large fish tanks where you can get fresh live fish. You don't see that anymore. Large aisles full of different items I haven't seen at other Asian stores. The only thing I have to ding them on is their prices. Most of the prices we saw were excellent, but when we came to the coconut milk aisle they were twice the cost of publix or the other Asian stores ($2 versus $1 elsewhere). My overall rating of this place would have been 5 stars if not for this pricing issue. But it's a solid 4 stars. You have to visit this place, it's just a great experience to browse the different foods and listen to the music. read more

This was the first asian market that I went to when I first moved to Gainesville 4 years ago but over the years the place has really down graded. The place is not as clean anymore as it use to be and their customer service is not very pleasant either. The cashier overstuffed my groceries in one bag and packed my glassware with food items that would crush easily. Come on guys! Couldn't spare another bag?! I looked inside the bread cabinet where all the delicious sweet buns were and there was flies inside the packaging. But on the brighter note they do have some items (iike tripe!) that I cannot find at the korean market or any other asian supermarkets around. read more

A newly opened place for Asian groceries. It looks clean, spacious and everything is organized. This is a good place to come to and search for stuff to make since everything is organized unlike Chung chin. The vegetables are cheap but not as cheap as chung chin. For those that like fresh fish, or crabs. They have tanks with fresh tilapia or other type of fishes that might be in season. They have a small section of BBQ stuff and chinese bake goods. I'm not sure when they get their shipment because it is best to buy it when is fresh. I also like that they have a section with lots of snacks, drinks, and frozen food. This is my 2nd favorite asian market in gainesville aside from chun ching. Good things about this is that it is cleaner than chun ching, but their vegetables are not as fresh and not as cheap. I like that they have the live fish and fresh seafood. They are much more organized and neater than chun ching, and their food storage is probably safer in regards to keeping the meat at a cold temperature (would question some of the stuff at other asian markets). As far as bakery goes, I think since this market isn't as popular as chun ching, their barbecue and bakery does not have as much of a variety as chun ching and not as frequent deliveries. read more

This is probably my favorite Asian market in Gainesville. It's not the cleanest one, but it is not the messiest either! They carry more Taiwanese food products than the others, which my family appreciates. They also have Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese products as well. I enjoy their large seafood section. This is definitely the most impressive in the Gainesville area. I'm not sure what day they bring in the bakery goods, but they have Chinese bakery goods and cake rolls for sale. If you spend over $100 (My mom goes crazy, when she visits), they'll even throw in an entire case of aloe drink or soy milk. The employees here are nice. We have come to depend on Eastern Market for our leafy vegetables, which we load up on every week. They also have a great selection of sauces and dry goods, like instant noodles, dried mushrooms, and huge bags of rice. We have bought some seafood here, and it smelled and tasted very fresh. (They have tilapia and a few other types of fish live in tanks, and a lot of other seafood displayed nicely on ice.) Another thing we buy often are the dumpling skins. Since we make our own stuffing, we have never sampled the many types of frozen dumplings, but the choice is amazing. Lately we have bought some bowls and other nice kitchen stuff, and I bought a good quality divided hotpot (stainless steel). Of course now we buy hotpot goodies too from the frozen section, and the authentic packets of spicy hotpot sauce. (LaoGanMa is medium hot, but better is the "Sichuan Flavor Hot Pot Seasoning" brand in a pretty package but not much English.) As other reviewers have said, this is an extremely clean store, and everything is easy to find. All of the staff is friendly, and most of them speak English well. Some pretty good cooking tips available here too. As for the prices, sure you have to pay attention on a few items, but I don't think you can get a better deal on fresh greens anywhere in Gainesville. read more

I shop here often and i find that if your come in on the right days they have plenty of selection. Sanitation is not the best I have seen. They usually have inexpensive live Maine lobsters and i have actually been able to order 2.5# lobsters for a very reasonable price (well compared to Publix!). Smells like fish. It has a big fish tank with small tilapia that you can buy fresh. So fresh they are swimming! It has exactly what you would think it has. It's an Asian market. Shortly after moving here, I became obsessed with figuring out how to cook proper Chinese food (fueled by Fuschia Dunlop's cookbooks mostly to start). Eastern Market is well organized and has a good selection of everything you need to furnish your pantry as well as some basic household goods. Also I have had surprisingly good luck with their fish. The fishmonger is friendly and seems skilled and all the fish I've bought has been fresh and good quality. Sometimes I feel awkward and out of place and I shy away from asking to find an item I'm looking for, but the staff is always extremely helpful when I do ask. The baked goods that they carry are always (reasonably) fresh and delicious. They now carry Kewpie mayonnaise, too! The store is clean and very organized. The staff are friendly and all when you need assistance but when you return items they are not as friendly. They were quite rude to me. I know it's a bother for them to do returns but at least be professional and treat your customer right. I will be going back to Chun Ching to shop for everything I need plus it's way cheaper there anyway. (as good as it gets... for gainesville) i lived in seattle for a bit and lurked around chinatown a few days a week. asian markets are just the best. they always have something new and unique, and it's usually far less expensive than regular grocery stores. eastern market has a massive produce section. their seafood section is even larger, and occasionally they will have live razor clams or conch or snails. they always have cuttlefish. they have squid, both cleaned and not. they have a massive tank of swimming tilapia. it's... you just have to go. if you appreciate fresh seafood -- asian preparations or otherwise -- then you should check out easten market for that alone. it changes around sometimes, so don't count on one thing always being there. it's very organized, being a new storefront. there's no mystery about where anything is, and that's the most obnoxious part about asian markets in town (cough chun ching). i got a cute little hand-painted bunny ramen bowl. they have really unique tea cups, too. read more

While this is my alternate asian market in Gainesville (because of location) - it is probably the biggest in terms of square footage and probably items as well. Focusing on Chinese foodstuffs they have an extensive frozen section (dumplings, different types of buns, etc) and the biggest instant noodle section by far. If you are fiending for a marathon of trying new instant noodles, this is the place to go. Spices, seasonings, sauces, noodles, snacks, etc - they have it all. The place is pretty clean as well. Not too fond of their produce or their seafood, as I am not really sure of how fresh it is but they have that too - this also goes for the few "bakery" items and pre-packaged roasted duck they have. The prices are a bit inflated but that is to be expected since its vendors aren't local. You have to find out when they receive their shipments of Supply in order for you to get the freshest and newest items and groceries the next day. Vegetables are always a hit or a miss; typically unimpressive. This is probably why most Chinese now visit Lucky's next door since they have a better selection (an observation). I REALLY dislike having to show my ID when using my credit card as this is typically against merchant provider agreements. No, there is no "per-regulation" that I show my ID despite their sign. Accept it as cash or just ask for cash period and don't take credit cards. I only go here to get my Chinese wife Korean ramen she likes... otherwise, I'd forget this place in a heartbeat. read more

Went in to buy some ingredients for an asian dish. As soon as I walked in, I noticed that all the employees were staring me. It did make me feel a bit uncomfortable but it didn't bother me that much. I walked through the store and picked up some stuff and it seems like the store was organized and clean. They had a lot of snacks and frozen food. They also had cute spoons and kitchen ware.
