Great campground! Clean, pretty quiet, plenty of shade spots. BIG bear boxes. Fire ring with cooking grate. Clean restrooms (no showers). This is a really nice campground. It's pretty, set among trees with a rushing stream. There are lots of birds and chipmunks and cute ground squirrels. The sites are all set well apart with plenty of privacy, and almost all of them have a great flat spot for at least one tent. Since the bathrooms and dumpsters are central, there's no worry about picking a site too close to them. The sites across from the stream are situated so that if you camp there, you won't have people walking through your space to get to the water because they'll walk around on the paved area. There's running water and flush toilets; the bathrooms were very clean when I was there despite it being summer with a lot of campers. The hosts drive around frequently and the campground was really quiet at night, so I think they would enforce quiet hours if anyone got rowdy. There are bear boxes. Reserved sites are clearly marked well in advance. The Rock Creek area is easy to access. Four stars instead of five because: it's low elevation, only about 7,500 feet, so don't stay there in the midst of summer heat. The recreation.gov website where you make reservations is not user friendly. And mainly, people leave too much trash in the sites. I don't blame the hosts - how are they going to have time to go through every single site and clean? I picked up a bag full of plastic, old fishing line, a used sponge, etc. left in my site by previous campers, the top of the bear box was sticky from some nameless substance they had spilled, and even worse they had not cleaned up after their dog, so that joyous activity fell to me. I don't know if that's typical of every site, but be prepared for the people before you to have lacked responsibility. read more

We had reservations to stay 2 nights. Got to our site and it was so uneven there was no way our rv would level. If we had stayed I probably would have fallen out of bed that's how bad it was. Reservations state absolutely no changing sites. We ended up coming back to Bishop and staying at our regular place -Highlands RV Park (a 5). We were so disappointed. A shinning gem in a beautiful majestic place. Couldn't find a campsite in Mammoth and finally found one near Tom's Cabin and could not be happier. Very spacious, wooded and is right next to a babbling brook. Great place to camp. read more

It had been over 10 years since my family and I had camped at French Camp. Since then the campground has made vast improvements. They have bear lockers installed on each campsite. This is very helpful as it is an obvious deterrent from bears, but more importantly the overly friendly chipmunks. The chipmunks have no shame in their game, when it comes to raiding food that is open, and we lost a bag of hot Cheetos that we forgot to put away. The cleanliness and upkeep of this campground is impeccable. Using the bathroom, when camping can be a bit of a nightmare, but that is not the case here. The campground manager, Chuck, goes around to each restroom and cleans it on a daily basis. Rock Creek offers a great opportunity for fishermen of all levels to grab a decent catch. The Creek is regularly filled with rainbow trout, from a nearby hatchery, so it's fairly easy to catch something, if you go when the creek is restocked. Lastly, the campground manager, Chuck, is awesome. When we first arrived at French Camp, he pointed us in the direction of the best spot for our group of 8. After we got there, he noticed that we didn't have any firewood, and dropped it off to our site at a bargain. He was extremely helpful and knowledgable of the area and pointed us in the direction of the best fishing spots and hot springs. Can't wait to go back next year. read more

Great camp site! The campground manager is a great guy. We accidentally ran out of firewood late at night and he was nice enough to help us out. The bathrooms and facilities are kept in pristine condition. There is a creek nearby that you can fish in. The location is right nearby the tom's place resort, close enough where if you forgot something at home you can go pick it up, but far enough where you are undisturbed in the great outdoors. Also just down the road is another lake full with fish and the mosquito flats trails which is a must hike. But really the reason this campgrounds gets 5 stars is because of the manager, I have been to campgrounds poorly maintained and its a downer to drive out and be let down like that. Chuck, definitely by far does the best job I have seen so far and I am going to comeback every year I can. read more

Ok, we've been camping here for at least 10 years now. According to the on-line reservations all if not most of the campsites were full/reserved. Got to our site with absolutely no shade as it was clearly visible to trees had been cut down. Camp sites throughout appear to actually get smaller and smaller from year to year. Its becoming more difficult to park vehicles with a limit of (2) now & smaller driveways. We even had difficulty finding a location to pitch a tent. Entire camp site was less than 1/2 full compared to last year in June when we visited. Arrived to campsite with campers still on site. Apparently, French Camp is acting like other resorts where Check Out time is til 2pm? Since when do camp sites do this? Most travelers/campers are on the road in the wee morning hours, we like to take advantage, arriving at our destination early & set up camp asap. This time we had no place to hang out but to wait til our site was open, which meant driving around in circles with a trailer. Truly disappointed that this is now a policy. Not sure we'll be staying here anymore.... read more

We planned our yearly trip a little too late and didn't get the sites we wanted at East Fork, so we stayed at French Camp. I'm actually glad that happened! Perks to being at the bottom of the hill is you're alot closer to the other lakes! Rock Creek had the slowest fishing we have ever experienced in the years we've been coming, so being closer to the others was a god send. Less mosquitos, clean bathrooms at all times of the day, not crowded like the other campgrounds, quiet, and we had a baby bear come through! The creek that runs through the campground sounds amazing while you're falling asleep. We plan on staying here from now on, instead of East Fork or Rock Creek Lake. read more

Camped here as a last resort because everywhere was filled up. Was here in August and the campground was maybe only half full so it was pretty quiet and felt kind of secluded. There are trees throughout the campground but they're smaller trees that don't always provide the best shade. The sites that are closest to the creek seemed like the best because there were more larger pine trees and you could see and hear the creek a lot more. This campground is pretty close to 395 so we could hear trucks and loud cars at night, so I recommend sites that are farther in at the south end of the campground. Overall the campground is really well maintained and the bathrooms are clean and stocked. Would camp here again if I had to but not my first choice. read more

We've stayed here before but usually in a small group of 4 or 5. On 8/7 my cousins and me reserved 3 sites and were very happy with our selection. We reserved sites 27, 29 and 30. We actually put 3 tents on site 27 with 2 people each. Just a word of caution, there are scorpions in the area, we had a few under our ground cloth when we were packing up. Don't know how poisonous they may be, just be careful. Our camp host was Chuck B. and he was the friendliest guy, or gal for that matter, that we've come across at any campground in quite a while. The site is removed enough from the highway and the road that you don't hear any vehicle traffic. If you are fortunate enough to stay here, try and get the sites closest to the creek and you'll have it lull you to sleep every night. Now why didn't I give it a 5? Too many rocks, you're in a canyon and it is nature. That's nit picking, I know, but everything else was great. Added bonus is that you're close to the Tom's Place Resort where they stock supplies, have a nice little restaurant and a small saloon. read more
