First time here, didn't realize how close it was off the road. Amazing gift shop. Very clean restrooms, they offer rooms to rent as well as a wedding venue. Kid and animal friendly, trout stocked lake. Breathtaking views. Easy access for someone with disabilities, can drive almost all the way around the lake. Very clean, quiet, and felt very safe. Picnic tables available as well. Highly recommend and would return. Camping spaces available as well but did not see any campers. read more

it's a campground. I've reached the point in my life where a four-star hotel with no mini-fridge or in-room dining counts as camping, but every year the extended family makes a boys-only trek to Convict Lake and this year, my sixteen-year-old wanted to go. made reservations at the earliest opportunity, first thing in the morning six months out. post Covid doesn't seem to be as crowded but wanted to make sure we had a place to pitch our tent. more than a dozen "boys," tequila, beer, and other party favors made for a marathon week of fireside chats and beer pong. I'm always looking for an excuse to cook for friends. BBQ'd ribs, seared ahi, double-cut pork chops, bone-in ribeyes, and heaping plates of Korean-style short ribs: nobody went to bed hungry (or sober). Convict Lake was base camp for lots of other adventures: trout fishing in the nearby lake and streams, day trips into Mammoth for Mexican food, jujitsu sessions, and restocking depleted supplies of ice and beer, and hikes to the high lakes that surround the campground for overnight sleepovers. we even had several party crashers including Bambi and, one particularly rowdy evening, a bear. maybe next year, I'll find a nearby four-star hotel and leave sleeping on the ground to younger folks with less grumpy backs. read more

I love it here. I have been for the past 2 years and I'm headed up in July for my 3rd year here. My family and I stay for about a week and we are in love. The lake is always so gorgeous (cold and refreshing but beautiful). Renting out boats is always so easy and the dock hands are super nice and kind. The store is the best place for merchandise, fishing equipment, and food! Unfortunately there are no showers, but you can buy tokens to shower with and buy minutes. The showers are nice. The couple reasons why I gave it a 4/5 stars is number one is the bugs in the bathroom. When no one cleans it out you have to literally keep your eyes on the ceiling and stuff so you don't get attacked or bit up by bugs. The next thing that scares me is bears. They're always there, they live there. There are about 2-3 in the area, and just make sure you put everything in the bear box. Everything. Toiletries, food, snacks, everything. We had a bear encounter last year but everyone ended up being ok. The last thing is lights throughout the campsite and facilities. Some of the bathrooms have no lights and there are no lanterns throughout the campground at night so you are holding a flashlight in pitch black making sure no beats are around. Beautiful lake! Camp sites and restrooms are clean. There is plenty of room between spots for privacy. The lake has boat and kayak rentals. The ONLY disappointing thing was the HOST. He is rude, unfriendly, and unapproachable. If you ask him any questions or ask for any help, he will give you the worst attitude and rudest answers. I've never come across a host who was that unfriendly and just a downright unhappy person. read more

Amazing stars.. We stayed in spots 58 & 59 this was at the end the good things was we had kids that were loud but since no one was around we didn't bother anyone with the loud kids. The down side was we got a lot of wind. So make sure to tie down your tent we didn't do a good job and when we came back it was flat We arrived early and they let us set up camp before the 2pm. The site was clean and ready. The site is right by the stream you can hear the water at night and the fishing we got a couple of hits. This was memorial weekend we booked on line to secure a spot but when you book online you need to stay 3 nights or you can take your chance and grab a spot which there was a few spots open.. which was a shock since it was the weekend. The camp manager was super nice drive around a few times to check on things bathrooms were clean and well stocked. The fire wood was $8 at the site and $7 at the store. No showers here but you can go to the store $3 for 3 minutes the more tokens you buy the better deal you get plus they have washer and dryers for $1.50. If you don't want to cook you can buy from the store or restaurant. The lake is beautiful gets crowded even with all the extra parking. They only thing is we need more fish it was fished out. read more

Had the BEST time camping here! Our friends got married at Convict Lake, so we decided to make a camping trip out of it. We only had a 3 month notice for the wedding, so it was a little tough to reserve a campsite. I basically just kept checking the online availability every few days until a spot finally opened up and I snagged it! We ended up getting spot #57, which ended up being the best spot in the camp! It fit our 34 foot trailer perfectly, and I loved that it was at the end of a little culdesac so we had alot of privacy. The camp sites are huge, and you can easily fit afew tents, or an RV plus a tent if needed. There was also a creek right behind us so we got to listen to the water flowing at night. It was so peaceful! The check in process was super easy, you literally just drive in and go to your spot. You don't have to sign in or check in with anyone. They put your name/info on the campsite number so that they know who it's reserved for. They don't have any hookups, but there is a water spiggot at the entrance when you're driving into the campsite so you can pull over and fill up the water tanks for the RV, for no additional cost. They also sell bundles of fire wood if you need it. We saw 2 camp managers camping there on site, but they mind their own business and keep to themselves which is nice. You get that true camping experience here! NO CELL PHONE SERVICE. Just a heads up, you barely get any service here.....it's almost impossible to send or receive text messages, but we were able to make/receive phone calls. So just keep that in mind if you are trying to meet up with people. They have a little bridge shortcut from the campsite over the the resort area where they have public showers, a laundry room, restaurant/bar, and a little market. The market actually has quite a large selection of stuff in case you forget anything. They have alot of wine, beer, and some food items, medicine, toiletries, clothing, etc. The showers are a bit of a walk, so I would recommend just driving over to the shower area. They were actually pretty clean, and your'e in a private room that you can lock which is nice. Lots of fun stuff to do around here! It's a quick walk to the lake and you can walk around the entire lake. They also have boat and paddleboard rentals at the marina which I highly recommend. It's also a short 15 minute drive to Mammoth if you want to explore the town. read more

In love with this campground! I have gone to Convict lake a couple of times and have always wanted to stay there. We got last minute passes to Bluesapolooza in Mammoth and needed a place to stay so this was my go to campground. The campsites and bathrooms were super clean, I was impressed. One of the site host was super helpful, since it was last minute we couldn't get reservations so we had to do walk ups. When we were looking for a second site for the second night he pointed out which were leaving and even raged one for us while we were packing out stuff up to move since other people were trying to snag it. The campground it's self has an amazing view and isn't too far from everything. read more

I really liked this campground. There are many camping spots (70-80?) but well spaced out and we did not even notice our neighbors the entire time. Our spot (#53) was by the creek and I had the best sleep ever each night. The creek sound was so loud I did not hear my friends waking up in the morning or moving around in their tents. (I find this very soothing. I realize others may not though). The only issue was the space to pitch our tents was really small. I have camped a lot over the last 4 years and this is the smallest space I have seen so far. We had 6 humans and 1 dog (3 tents) and had to do some crazy maneuvering to fit all 3 in the space provided. Other campsites looked better though, so I would call and ask before reserving a spot with 3 tents next time. Other than that, views were incredible, site was clean and level, 10 minutes from downtown mammoth, flush toilets were clean and we had a great time . I would definitely stay here again. read more

Stayed at space #43. Staying October 18th - 20th. We came in right before it got dark. Bought firewood from the camphost. 7 dollars cash only. Since we were late arriving we couldn't take showers because they require a token. The store was closed that sells the tokens. 2 tokens for 5 dollars. 2 tokens will get you 6 minutes in the shower. The campground restrooms are clean and flushing toilets with a sink. Bring your own soap and towel to wash hands. Great place to rest and shower. We traveled up to Lee vinning,June lake and mammoth Lakes. read more

Convict Lake Campground is awesome. You can find sites that have a bit of privacy, always nice fellow campers, clean bathrooms, and a variety of ways to enjoy nature. My kids and I spend our mornings fishing the creek, hiking and hunting for rainbows and browns, then retreat up to the lake for a cool plunge and relaxing in the sunshine. The 12k ft mountain peaks that spill down to the lake as a box canyon are astounding to behold. Convict Lake Campground is the one place that my kids and I feel closest to nature and each other. It's a very special place for our family. read more

Great place to go camping with family and friends! And the fishing isn't half bad either! I actually prefer to stay at this campground over Brown's Owen's River campground based solely on the fact that Convict Lakes campground actually has trees for shade!!! The water at Convict Lake is crystal clear and almost glassy smooth! Can't wait to travel up that way again sometime for more camping and fishing! read more

We stayed in 3 cabins during December to go snowboarding, they need to upgrade all mattresses in beds I stayed in my own cabin for 2 nights then I joined my family in there's on the 3rd night and everybody in the whole family was complaint about how they need to upgrade the mattresses. Also the wifi can use a upgrade too. My family stayed there prior to when I got there in a 3rd cabin. : ) read more

The campground host here is a thief. He stole three bundles of extra firewood from our campsite while we were still loading up our cars to leave, then denied it to my face when I asked him. He also tried taking our camp chairs and we had to take them off his golf cart. The location is nice, but I'd expect the people in charge to have more decency than this. read more

Had the most amazing time here at convict lake..! My fiancé and I took our engagement photos here..!! We weren't able to get a spot at first but bill, which is one of the camp host, made sure we were able to stay and get a great spot.. he was more than helpful..!! I'm all about customer service and bill was amazing! The camp is great... bathrooms are really clean. Beautiful views.. and friendly deers..!! We will definitely be coming back...!! Thank you all! 5 star campground with -5 star camp "hosts". Been camping here for 40yrs and was married on the lake. Never had a problem with camp host until this year. Apparently management has been transferred to a private company recently and it shows. Denis the camp manager is a piece of work. Major attitude problem and on a power trip from day one. The other toilet attendance on a power trip names are Patty and Rudy. Some of the nastiest people we've ever had the misfortune to meet. Proceeded to trespass on our camp spot and yelled at my wife saying " we are the worst campers they've had and hope we never come back"??? Who acts like that and why are they in a position of dealing with the public? Couldn't get a hold of anyone from the Forrest service or anyone in authority over these out of control "hosts" to make a formal complaint. To bad a beautiful place is spoiled by nasty ugly people. Hope they aren't back next year. read more

Can't believe no one has reviewed this gem yet, maybe because it's a little unknown. Located a couple miles south of Mammoth, turnoff is across from Mammoth airport. Convict Lake has become my happy place. Beautiful lake, gorgeous scenery, roaring creek, fishing, hiking, and if you are looking for some peace and quiet, this is the place. It is not overrun with tons of people. The campground is set back off the lake(you can't see the lake from campsites, but lake is still within walking distance). The terrain at the campground if quite different from around the lake, but that is what makes this place unique. Each site has a nice flat pad, table, fire ring, and bear box. Sites closest to lake have no shade. Sites further back are set next to the flowing creek that you can fish out of. Bathrooms are kept pristine. They are even lit at night. Only negative for us, generator hours are 6:00am-10:00pm. Didn't enjoy hearing those things so early in the morning and so late into the evening. You are out in the middle of no where(feels like it), so their is really no cell service, but the night sky is worth it!! read more
