Best sunsets! What a great place to go for family recreation! Boulder built a huge rec center right along side two beautiful ponds and a huge trail! Located east of foothills off baseline, you can start north off bobolink trail, or drive down to the rec center. There's a large building but numerous trails to walk as well! There are numerous soccer and football fields around, and basketball and racquetball courts. Many volleyball fields and tennis courts too! There's a big dog park as well with a cool little pond beach. I enjoy this park a ton for sunsets and casual walks, as well as time trial runs. This is a must do park! read more

I am writing more about the outdoor recreational areas. There is a spot for just about any sport. Tennis courts, paddleball walls, playground, and large open fields for other options. A small pond and great view of the mountains. Ample parking lots. Think of it as an athletic center. read more

I used the indoor facilities at this rec center in the past but currently I am using the multi-use paths around the center and community park to bike. Some of my other favorite rides in Boulder have been affected by the heavy rainfall this spring which led to underpass closures and muddy conditions so I headed out to more open, drier territory, though there was a small flooded section out here too. The paths are mostly paved but there is a nice section of gravel and chip stone alongside the extensive playing fields. There are currently summer soccer camps, Ultimate Frisbee classes and tennis lessons going on. Lots of participants and all seemed to be having a good time. There is ample paved parking adjacent to these fields. There is a nice little lake here and the path around it joins with the path around the fields and this section is part of the Boulder 360 bike trail which encircles the city. The designation is painted on the pavement to follow. There are some Canada geese around the lake, currently with goslings in tow, so be watchful of them and their droppings. Super fun rec center. But we came just for the pool. If you pay to get in the Boulder Creek reservoir save your receipt because it is also good for any of the 4 rec centers! We chose the East location because of the positive reviews. My kids had a blast. It has a Jacuzzi, several lanes for lap swimming, a big waterslide, a basketball hoop, a lazy river, a bubble bench for massages & a tot area. We played for a couple hours it was all so fun.... all except for the grumpy teenage life guards. They were the only negative part! But the park, lake & view of the mountains were amazing! read more

Pools vary, and lap swimmers can tell you about some pools that are no fun, like the basement pool in Denver where you can't breathe because there's little ventilation to dilute the chlorine fumes. This one's really nice, with few of the typical problems at a public lap pool. Dressing rooms are clean, and the pool has a view that looks like you are in a Swiss Spa. No creepers. It does, however, have a chronic problem with lifeguards sitting in a soundproof booth facing AWAY from the pool while one lifeguard tries to cover the kid pool and keep an eye on the lap swimmers. I have actually had to send out another lifeguard from the booth, as one guard was trying to look back and forth covering children in two pools while two others sat inside doing nothing. read more

The huge slide in the pool is tempting, but I have only come here for meetings in the back room. The room has large windows on one side of the room which streams in natural lighting and outstanding views of the Flatiron Mountains, which is a great way to impress clients and guests. The Boulder Rec Center is an ideal place to have a meeting or presentation because the facility is easy to fine, parking is free and plenty, and the cost of rental is cheaper then a room-with-a-view closer into town. There is the downfall of there not being any walkable restaurants or cafes... Say, if you were putting on an all-day seminar, but get the meeting catered or charge an extra $5.00 a person and order subs, and this will keep the guests onsite and comfortable. The building is a green gem in boulder, and is LEED Certified under the US Green Building Council... If you are expecting a place to rival a private, expensive club, you might be disappointed. But for a city rec. center, and for the price, it's really a great place and a great deal for the money. Mornings are not crowded, and there are abundant machines and weights, it's relatively clean, the staff is nice, and they have an excellent spin class in the mornings. I have been going there 3 days a week now for a couple years, and I am quite pleased. If you are looking for a scene, the latest in high tech , or exorbitant fees, look elsewhere. But if you want a family friendly place to get serious about fitness, and where everybody knows your name, this place is it. read more

I've been here a few times to take advantage of the dog park. The off-leash area for dogs is fantastic and spacious. There are three separate areas for dogs to roam around -- the side of one area is adjacent to the pond, so the dogs can cool off and play in the water. My dog isn't much of a swimmer, but I was happy to see him brave the edge and get his feet wet! Whosagoodboy?!? There is plenty of parking and the playgrounds, tennis courts and recreation fields seem to be fairly wide open when I'm here. It probably doesn't get as much traffic compared to other parks in Boulder, so if your motivation is to be social and meet dog owners/park-goers, you might want to check other parks. The trails at the edge of the community center are great and have beautiful views of the mountains! read more

We just came for the pool and we loved it! I hate cold water so I loved that this pool felt like a bath. My 7 year old loved having a water slide all to herself for hours. My 2 year old was able to swim in the shallow end and use the pink slide by himself. Though the pool area was a little dated, the locker rooms were very clean and nice. This is really a cautionary tale in reference to the dog park at East Boulder Community Center. It is very nice! Great views... water for the dogs to swim in... conveniently located... However, I was led to believe that the park was fully enclosed. I had a greyhound at that time -- greyhounds generally need to be on a leash if not in an enclosed area. They have very high prey drive and can travel up to 45mph, so if something catches their eye, they can be in the next county before you can say, "Come!" The fence that goes through the lake is not safe enclosure, it is not even a fence really. It is more like a bunch of low buoys or something. I can't remember precisely because all I can remember is my heart sinking as my dog headed straight to the water and popped right over it. The guy next to me turned and said "Sometimes they do that." My husband took off running through the bushes, jumped the fence, and grabbed our dog who was meandering through the shallows on the other side of the fence. So if you have a greyhound, or an escape artist of another breed, beware. read more

You're not likely to stumble upon the East Boulder Community Center by accident, but no matter how you find it, it's a great place to spend an afternoon in Boulder. It's also a good place to get your exercise in if you're not into the mountains. While I am into the mountains, I'm also into biking or jogging the few miles from my house to here, a community center tucked away in a sleepy neighborhood that hardly feels like Boulder. They've got an AMAZING dog park here, tons of tennis courts, hand ball courts and wide open fields to kick, toss or throw the projectile of your choice. It's also a nice place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon and just hold hands, stare at the geese (or ducks, I'm never sure which) and sit on a bench watching the sunset behind the mountains. read more

This is a nice full service facility. I use the pool 95% of the time so can mostly comment on that. There is 8 lane 25 yard pool, a hut tub and a separate leisure pool with a fun slide! The lap pool is usually kept at around 78F - which is nice and comfortable for swimming laps. I usually swim with the Masters swim group (http://www.bamswimteam.org/) MWF at 5:45AM. They have a coached work out, lots of lane mates to keep you motivated and plenty of other work out times if you aren't into pre-dawn swimming. Come and check it out. read more

Laughably bad pool hours. They have this great pool for kids that is open a few hours a week for anything other than lessons or old folks swim. No time on Saturday. 2 hours on sunday. 2 hours a couple days during the week, from 5-7pm, right during traditional dinner hours. No kidding. We used to go here all the time back in hte day but now it's literally next to impossible to find any time to use it. What a shame. Don't bother. read more

This Rec Center (when did they become "Community Centers"?) just might be the best of the three in Boulder. Inside they have a huge pool area (lap pool, kiddie play area, slide, hot tub), several basketball courts, multiple dance studios, a nice airy gym, and a rock wall. Outside they have tennis, handball, volleyball and basketball courts, and a dog park with water access. The only thing I don't think they have is a jungle gym outside. There's also a nice seniors activity center on the west side of the building where old folks can hang out, play games and do crafts. You can rent the rooms over here for parties and events as well. read more

Don't think there is a reason I could talk bad about this place, other than it reminds me I can also just go into the woods without boundaries, as well. Community center is great...dog park is great MINUS the humans! Plan on getting dirty...it is a dog park , remind you. Not a church! Dont wear your finest attire. Expect a dog to maybe even jump on you or splash you...there will be dogs of all kinds and dogs of all ages. Remember that YOU and YOUR dog are NOT the only dogs in there. RESPECT that...if you feel entitled and your dog is perfect...Probably should google perfect dog park for perfect people. Or just stay home. read more

The workout area is much much better than either the North or South Recreation Center. Easy access to the gym and the space there. Much more room than North or South. If you want to lift and can go to either one of the 3 go to East. As far as equipment goes there is nothing special here but not much lacking if you just want the standard workout. North workout area is VERY cramped. And South needs to update their equipment for sure. read more

Will not be returning. I was feeling anxious about finding a new fitness center, and I thought I would try my luck here as I have had good luck with community centers. The weight room and facilities were everything I was trying to avoid. The weight room was cramped, cleaning supplies were unavailable half the time I was there, the area is carpeted (as opposed to cushioned, etc., for joint impact and hygiene reasons), there is no area to stretch so visitors have to find a corner of a busy hallway, children were running around everywhere, and machines were so limited that there are sign up sheets. After all this I was ready for a hot shower, but the women's locker room was crowded, dirty, and there were no private showers (and all the shower heads were occupied). Needless to say, the endorphin gain was overshadowed by the stress of this facility. Avoid. read more

This is a review for the pool: The life guards are rude, and I'm not sure how effective, as many of them usually wear street clothes, including shoes, while on duty. While waiting between lessons, they constantly correct my older and able-bodied swimming child on her ability to use the lap swimming equipment, or have access to the lap lanes. I am tired of my children being barked at, and do not plan on signing them up for more lessons here, nor renewing our $800 family membership. read more

I used to really enjoy the pool, but with the locker room redo they have reduced the number of large family/handicapped changing rooms to two and i have had to wait 40 minutes to use one. It can take a long time for a family to pee, shower and get dressed. We now go elsewhere. read more

A lovely setting in the far south-east reaches of Boulder, this community center has a lot going for it. We haven't had a chance to use the outdoor space yet, but the pool is fantastic. My kids love the lazy river and the bubble bench and the mountain views from the pool windows are quite dreamy. The giant water slide goes really fast towards the end - definitely packs some excitement in to the experience. I have also used the exercise facilities here and while there are not a ton of machines, there were enough to keep everyone busy but not overloaded. I have to take away one star because the family changing rooms here are not that great. The space is really small and if possible, it's much better just to use the regular changing rooms for you and your kids as there is much more space to get to lockers and more than one toilet. North Boulder Rec Center has much better family changing rooms....but no lazy river! read more

A friend offered to give my kids pointers on breast stroke for a couple of days at the East Boulder Community Center pool. She is not a swim instructor, just a fellow mom who wanted to help-out. The first day, there were no issues and fees were charged only for those swimming or using the facility equipment (makes sense). The next day, the staff suddenly would not allow our friend in without paying the daily fee, even though she wasn't swimming or using the facility herself. Not a huge deal; she paid the fee and came in. About 20 minutes later, a lifeguard tells us that "lessons" can only be given by their own instructors and we couldn't continue in the future. Huh? No one can get advice on their swimming technique at a public pool? You'd think the recreation department would be in favor of kids swimming and being open to improvement. There were no issues raised the day before, but we only had two sessions planned anyway. Between their inconsistent, absurd policies, and the nickel-and-diming this place engages in (Charging for towels? Why not just check them out with an ID like at Bob Berger?), I'd recommend people check out other pool options. The Lafayette Recreation Center isn't far away and is a National Gold Medal Winner in Parks and Recreation. The Lafayette Aquatics Director has since told me that as long as no money is being exchanged for the "lesson" (it wasn't), then they'd be happy to have our friend help my kids at their pool. The City of Boulder could learn a thing or two from Lafayette about building community and running an excellent facility that looks out for patrons. read more
