Had a late dinner here w/ friends at around 1am on a Tuesday night! The place is an American & Mexican fusion place w lots of great eats to share. There's more of a focus on drinks here and so the seating is pretty limited for dining so we ended up at a small table below the stairs. The service was pretty good and the food came out fairly quickly. Shrimp tacos- Very good. Probably my favorite dish we tried. Lots of flavor & shrimp was cooked perfectly! Did not end up trying the lamb tacos but my friends said they were really good. Chicken & waffles- great batter / skin on the fried chicken but was a little dry on the inside. Waffles were solid but kinda dry & tasted like baking soda Samosas- good!!! Very good serving (3) and each one was fairly big. Came to East Bay Spice Co to meet up with a friend whom I hadn't seen in awhile. Despite being located on Oxford St, a block up from Shattuck where all of the main foot traffic is, this spot was still quite busy when we arrived around 6pm after work on a Wednesday. There are some outdoor seating options available, bar seating on the first floor, and some limited tables available inside on the 2nd floor. We managed to snag a table at the corner upstairs, but it was extremely rickety and definitely needed to be balanced better. Service can be a bit slow here, and they don't have a ton of appetizer options. We wound up going with a selection of tacos and a plate of samosas. The samosas come 3 to a plate, and are fairly large and definitely delicious. We really enjoyed all of the food we ordered, and definitely wouldn't mind trying some of the other menu items next time. Metered street parking is available, but can be difficult to find due to the location. Bar is located just a block away from the Downtown Berkeley BART station. So public transportation is easily accessible. read more

Wow, I'd pinged over here during my time in Berkeley without thinking too much before, but the two drinks I had on my last visit were amazing. One of the reasons I was not too attached previously was that the downstairs bar area is tight and as others have said, once a crowd starts to build up, things slow down fast. To credit the bartenders, there's only so fast you can make premium cocktails, though this place did have at least one "I'm going to intentionally ignore you as long as possible" bartender, an attitude I see pretty often in the Bay Area bars. It must be hard for anti-capitalists who are forced into the system by their need to raise money for Burning Man. Anywho, the Royal Charter was out of this world good and the Gumby Buck was no slouch, either. Both drinks were distinctive, well balanced, refreshing, and packed a firm but not overpowering punch. We came here on a weekday evening for dinner. This is a quaint store on Oxford St. The bar is downstairs and there is limited tables upstairs. When we arrived, there was relatively little wait and we were seated promptly. One thing to note is that you can't move the tables so there's not many options for larger groups to sit. The food and drinks took a while to be served. I ordered the The Original Tikka Masala Flatbread with Chicken and the Samsara. I liked the Samara - it was light, delicious and not too sweet and overall a great drink. I didn't like the Original Tikka Masala Flatbread with Chicken as much. The outer pizza crust was burnt making it a bit difficult to eat. The pizza was also not very consistent, as the middle of was flavorful, but the outer parts were a bit more bland. The establishment has 2 floors: the bar on the bottom and actual seating on the top floor. But I think you can also order food downstairs at the bar. We were disappointed in the service. It took us 15 minutes until a waitress helped us out. The girl who helped us out seemed like she was in the bar, but checked upstairs to see if everything was okay. She was sweet. But the upstairs waitress never helped us out On the other hand, the food was great! I've never seen chicken tikka masala served in a deep bowl, but my friend loved the flavor. Told him to surprise me with a drink with whiskey and he made me a real tasty drink. For food I tried the samosas and the tiki Marsala flat bread both were very good. I've lived in the bay my whole life and didn't even know this spot existed! I ordered a mango daddy as my drink and it was very heavy on the mezcal taste but was good. I ordered the vegetable curry and it was decent. I wish it had a bit more flavor too it, even a bit more salt would have helped. As a vegetarian, it could have been a bit more satiating. The portion size was pretty good. My partner got the tandoori street tacos and said they were very good. The overall atmosphere of the space was really cool and cozy. WATCH OUT. I gave them my card because they said they needed a card and an ID when I ordered to keep my tab open. They kept the card the whole time I was there. This was a card I never bring out and I never use it anywhere. I didn't even use it to pay I paid in cash. The lassi come home is essentially an alcoholic mango lassi and honestly very dangerous because I could just keep drinking this. The royal charter intrigued me because it had chai syrup, and it does not disappoint. Would not hesitate to recommend either of these, and I think you can't go wrong with any of their drinks here. The front door of this place is broken which was odd, and it was incredibly dark inside. Darkness can create a certain ambience, in this case it was too dark to even read the menu.
