These guys have a special place in my heart. Honestly, I think what I like about them is the way they remind me of my many enthusiastic mis-steps while learning to cook. Probably that doesn't sound good, but for a UMass student, this is probably my favorite place on campus to get lunch.
Food is a bit sloppy, the sort of thing you would expect from a student-run vegetarian coop. That said, flavors are bold, and where they lack polish, they compensate with enthusiasm. And, sometimes, things are really great.
I love being able to get a huge helping of kale or other healthy greens every day, and dressing them with their lemon-tahini dressing. I love being able to get a simple healthy lunch for a good price. I love a cheap meal of mostly organic and often local veggies and rice.
The rest of the options on campus all have the unmistakable greasy taint of corporate food, the sort of thing you would find in a mall or airport, so I am glad Earthfoods is around. Seriously, there was an article in the Collegian this fall about how one of the campus "chefs" found a French Meadow Bakery in an airport and said, "this is what we need at UMass". When you are hunting for new culinary ideas in airports, things are not good.
Earthfoods is not the sort of place I would recommend anyone make a trip to UMass to check out, but if you are a student in need of a quick healthy meal, they outshine the competition by far. read more
