This place was so cute! We walked by while browsing around but it hadn't opened yet. When we got there about an hour before Closing we asked if we could still sit and paint and they let us! Basically we had to work with the time that was left. We picked simple items, a planter with faces and a small dog. We were able to finish right at the end of the hour and the employee was able to have them glazed and ready for us the next day at 12:30 since we were leaving. They are so Friendly And personable in there and I'm super excited to visit again! Hopefully with more time :) Also! Make sure to book a reservation! This art studio cultivates such a creative and playful atmosphere perfect for all age ranges, from kids to grown @$$ adults. The foam jigsaw flooring lends itself nicely to a playful yet creative mood and the large round tables and ample sunlight optimize the environment. Having taken ceramics back in highschool, small thin brushes are worth their weight in gold as they help you get into the fine details of your craft. Luckily, this studio has an abundance of brushes of all sizes to choose from and encourage you to use as many brushes as needed for your art creation. Big ups for that. Overall, this definitely a must-try experience if you're visiting Idyllwild for the first time. The price and wide selection of ceramics to choose from makes for such an enjoyable experience in which, before you know it, 2 hours had passed by. Was out here on vacation and we decided to try this place out. Super fun! You get to spend a few hours painting/decorating ceramic pottery items that they have on the shelves to choose from. You select what you want and they have the prices on the items. Prices seemed pretty fair to me. They have lots to choose from. Bowls, platters, cups, ornaments and lots more. I did a bowl. We picked ours up the following day, as they have to put it in the kiln for you. Ends up having a glossy, nice finish. They have a wide variety of paint colors to choose from as well. We got drinks as well which was fun. The lady working there was so helpful and fun! Located in the main plaza area on the 2nd floor. I wished they opened a little earlier though. This place will remind you of color me mine. Where To start, located in Idyllwild, on the 2nd level of the shopping center, is where you'll find this shop. It's across the street from the Red Kettle. Plenty to chose from and varies in price. I seen some items as low as 6 bucks and as high as 25. Really cute items. Lots of paint colors to choose from. Be careful with the colors you pick. Just because it looks light blue when it's cured it'll be a darker blue. They have small tiles underneath the paint color so you can see what the finished color will look like. I really enjoyed painting here. The reason for the 3 stars, my husband made an appointment for 3 pm. When we entered it was packed with several tables on reserve. We thought oh great, they reserved a table. Nope. It was for a party of 15. We had to find our own table and lucky for us 2 people got up to leave otherwise we would not have gotten one. Also, the girl that helped us just said to pick something and have a seat. She didn't say to us that she would bring us everything we needed to paint so she got mad at us for already having paint and brushes on our table when she came to us this was only AFTER helping the party of 15. Mind you we cane before that large party. Not to mentioned she didn't tell us it was $2.50 every 15 min you stay painting your item. My friend overheard her telling someone else so at that point we kind of rushed. So after an hour and 15 for me and an hour for her we paid $55 bucks which isn't too bad but I wanted to give my item a bit more detail. If you're there for the weekend, I highly recommend you go there either Friday or Saturday and pick up your item the next day. It takes 24 hours to curate. What an experience! We're "way too old for art" right!? Naaah! Zara, the new owner, is such a joy and had such passion for art and children. Ignore the older reviews regarding children. She'll come around, give tips and pointers and makes the experience so much fun. We came for a 30-something birthday party, brought my 3 year old and had a large group of about 8 people. My son really enjoyed all the "extras" - she has toys, puzzles and play doh for days. At the end of our time there, she told him to keep a few, he was ecstatic! There's even a service for a small fee, they will paint the "eyes" on any creatures you get. Awesome! Also, bonus, bring your own wine! She provides the glasses. Definitely coming back. If I could give zero stars I would. A business is supposed to honor a price when they display it. Not only did the employee and store manager not honor the pricing on our items but they were rude, sarcastic and extremely unprofessional. Furthermore, they tell you to come back at noon the next day to pick up your cooked item but they are usually LATE. It is not uncommon to see people waiting in front of their "closed" door after 12pm. Had the owner of the shop had the decency to return a call after leaving two messages, I might have given more stars, but she made NO EFFORT despite knowing what the issue was. The truly worst part is when people simply don't honor their word. Customer service is important but more so is knowing that a business is not price gouging you. read more

We stumbled upon this place very randomly and thought we'd give it a shot because we were just kidding time anyways and it was a great idea! It is a super chill environment. We saw people around us sipping on wine also so that's a bonus for some! You pick your pottery from the displays and paint away. The lady who helped us was nice, not enthusiastic but just nice. Payment is depended on which pottery you select and an hourly fee of $7 (or 7.50). The hourly fee is an extreme downside to this place. I noticed you can easily kill an hour here when you start painting and get really into it and someone might even decide they want to do more than one pottery but because there is a fee per hour that could limit someone from getting another pottery. This place should consider doing a "Studio fee" that is a flat rate of $5-10 and let their customers stay for as long as their hearts want to paint! Coming in as a group of even 3 and having to pay an hourly fee per hour is pretty sad too. I totally get it goes into labor, workers...etc., but I would expect them to at least get proper brushes every few months. We had okay brushes and I was definitely able to get the job done with the variety of brushes but I would just expect them to change out the old brushes where the bristles are clearly overused. I had to really hold some of mine while painting to make sure the bristles won't fly out from the sides and get paint everywhere. Besides that fee, this place was a good find! It's a great place to come for a girls day, date, hang out, really anytime. After painting your item you have to keep your work at the studio to be glazed overnight and you can get it shipped for a fee ($8.50 and higher) or you can pick it up after they call you to tell you it's ready. You can walk out with a piece and everything under $20! That is a pretty chill, cheap and fun outing! read more

The business owner's response to my review on yelp was very professional, but she did send me a text message today, which pretty much stated my review was an attack on her business and that she had no desire to accommodate my party or myself going forward. I was honest on my review and did even state that I had good experiences prior. While I understand things can happen, a courtesy text or call would've been appreciated after they had to close. They did have my information because I had a scheduled appointment I personally booked with my cell phone number. I felt the owner took my review overly personal and her text response definitely showed that, and while she did again apologize for the inconvenience she didn't seem to take into account our predicament, as I had made the drive with other family members in multiple vehicles over an hour and half to get to her business to only be met with a closed sign and no notification about early closure. I feel if she would've reached out to me with more compassion versus just telling me I wasn't welcome there would have had a better outcome for both parties. read more

What a great experience!! My Husband, 4 children, and myself decided to take a break from the snow and paint. We had seen this shop earlier in the day and the BYOB had this wino sold. We were able to make an appointment via text and come right in. The owner was wonderful, so helpful and just an overall joy. Under New Ownership!!! My family and I come to Idyllwild every year for a week over New Years. We have been doing this for 15+ years. Part of our tradition is to spend one day at Earth 'N Fire every year. We have created many, many items over the years. Last year, 2018 was the first year we didn't get to enjoy our tradition. The shop was run down and it just seemed as if no one cared. We decided to try again this year in hopes things had changed. To our surprise they had. As of April 2019 Earth 'N Fire has been under new ownership. They have many new pieces of pottery, new bowls, new palettes and turntables. Not to mention the new owners are absolutely awesome!! I had one of those experiences when you walk out and go... "I can't believe that happened!" So during an extremely hot weekend, my family with 2 kids decide to check out some things to in the little town. I called this place beforehand and asked in a joking way if this would be a good place to go to to escape the heat since we have a 6 months pregnant woman and a 1 and 2 year old. The lady on the phone actually discouraged me from coming in, saying "we don't have air conditioning, it's very warm in here, so I wouldn't recommend it." Coming from a history of family business, I was surprised to hear this. Don't you want customers? We went into town anyways for coffee and I asked someone else what family friendly activities there were to do, and they brought up this place again, which happened to be around the corner. So I poked my head in and lo and behold - there's an air conditioner! And the place is almost empty. So I call over the family to come to paint for an hour. Everything was going well, although they seemed friendly with the kids, I could tell it was through gritted teeth. They commented that they should not hold the brushes so I just let them squeeze the sponges with water. They seemed very concerned about the "mess" which was literally just water ON the table, just splashes nothing else. When we came to check out, the older lady seemed very frazzled. We asked to split the bill but she literally put her hands to her head and said "ahh... I can't do this, can you just put it on one card?" Sure, no problem. So we charge it on one card, but later when we go home I realize she overcharged us. I had said from the very beginning the 1 year old and 2 year old were not painting (how can they?!) but they charged 2 more charges of $6/hr. I already had asked this before and they said of course they wouldn't charge the kids. But I'm sure since the lady was frazzled, she just miscalculated, right? Honest mistake. So I call back (VERY nicely, might I add) and the lady on the phone is huffy and puffy. She said "you should have told us" and I said "I did." Okay, so as an adult you can just chalk it up to miscommunication, right? Which is what I said, "ok well there's just a misunderstanding, can we clear it up when we come tomorrow?" She was still huffy, but said yes. When I come in the next day to pick up the art, she is again frazzled and says "now let me take your card so I can refund your money." I assume she looked at their copy of the receipt and found the mistake, but when she gave me my card back she had only refunded me $6. I said, "oh no, this is wrong. We were over charged $12." She got ALL huffy again and said she didn't understand. I literally had to physically separate the items and say "THIS is person #1, THIS is person #2, THIS is person #3. There were only THREE adults. See?" She finally got it but was so angry that she just grabbed my card and said "OKAY, let me do it AGAIN.." And I SO NICELY said "oh, I'm sorry (why am I apologizing!?) I should have confirmed before you took my card before" and she said "YEAH you should have." WTF.... seriously!? I was just trying to make things not so awkward. The worst part is when she came back, she pretty much threw my credit card back to me on the table like a snotty little kid. My 2 year old who says "I'm sorry" and "thank you" has better manners than this. I was kind of stunned at how mad she was for HER mistake (she has the copies of the charges herself, it should have been HER responsibility to clarify and make sure she did it correctly. Not my job, lady.) After all is done, I asked "great! Is there a bag I can take all this?" (STILL BEING A NICE PERSON.) She nods and says very snarkily "That's what we do, isn't it?" I get that she's so mad that she's just taking it out on me like a teenager, but that's when I realized that I was being treated like crap. She bagged the stuff (I'm surprised she didn't just crush it all in front of me) and I said thank you, and left. After all that I realized she never apologized for the mistake or said thank you. a.) Telling people to NOT come to your store...?? b.) Telling me that I should have told them that we should only get charged for 3 adults because only 3 adults are present...??? (isn't it obvious? who are you charging? ghosts?) c.) Treating me like it's my fault, but as the worker shouldn't you make it as easy for the customer? Why am I doing all the math and double checking? So... 1.) Don't come if you have kids, seeing the other review above made me realize they want a very easy atmosphere and cannot handle any sort of obstacle 2.) Double check your charges BEFORE they charge. 3.) Or just give them a calculator because they apparently can't do basic math. 4.) Unless you are a mom of toddlers and are used to seeing tantrums, don't be surprised when you witness huffy and puffy attitude I still give it an OK review for the actual store, it was a pleasant atmosphere with AC! read more

This is a fabulous little shop. I just visited and was able to chat with the owner, Eddie, for quite some time. He was super helpful and really sweet. You get to pick out pottery to paint, but Eddie offers to paint eyes or text and things for you if you so desire. In fact, he offered to ship my painted pottery, because it wouldn't be ready by the time I was leaving the next day. There are lots of things to choose from including items like coffee mugs, intricate dragons and simple penguins. The prices are reasonable, so it's a fun way to spend an hour or two being a little creative at the top of "the fort", windows open, a nice breeze while you paint. My only complaint about Earth & Fire is the hourly $6 rate while painting. I have a family of 5 painters & we would have painted multiple items each if it had not been for the hourly rate. So instead we each painted one item & left after an hour. Other stores that we have painted at charged just for a "studio fee" of $7-10. My suggestion would be to reduce or limit the fee if more than $100 is spent on pottery! We would come and paint all day every wknd if that were the case. My three boys and I love to head up to Idyllwild to escape the desert heat and always end up here. It's such a wonderful activity for the whole family. The staff and owner are just the sweetest women and so helpful. They are so patient with the kids! We have made at least a dozen creations and have had them shipped as well as had them held for pickup. They are always accommodating to whichever is most convenient.
