While there's tons of lakes in the area, not all of them are ideal for paddle boarding. Buck Lake (which is part of the Almon Recreational Area) most definitely is! They don't rent out paddle boards right at the lake, so if you don't have your own, you'll definitely have to rent one elsewhere and bring it here. We have our own, so that wasn't a problem. The Almon Recreation Area includes a paved path leading to a small beach and nice little swimming area in Buck Lake. The beach also offers a great launching point for paddle boards. The lake itself is relatively small and wake free, so, even if the beach area is busy, you can easily paddle out to serenely crowd free conditions. We went three days in a row on a holiday weekend and only ever came within shouting distance of one canoe and one paddle boat. Beyond that, we had the lake to ourselves. Just above the beach is a wooded picnic area, complete with grills, picnic tables, and bathrooms. The recreation area also includes (down a separate paved path) a pretty epic frisbee golf course that meanders through the woods as well a trail system if you're looking to take scenic hike. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail system. No pets (leashed or otherwise) are allowed at the beach/picnic area.

Visitors have access to the lake from 2 public boat landings. Fish include Musky, Perch, Blue Gill, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass & Walleye. The lake's water clarity is low. The lake is completely surrounded by beautiful tree covered rolling hills. Most of the shore is rocky & steep. But, a few areas have shallow & sandy beaches. The lake has some of the best fishing in Wisconsin. The lake holds a lot of natural structure. The DNR sank a line of log cribs to enhance fish habitats. The entire lake produces great fishing. I've landed 2 Musky's in a day on the lake. I've also have landed Walleye as big as 26 inches & Small Mouth Bass as long as 20" weighing 5 pounds plus. Walleye's are my only keepers, everything else I throw back. Fishing regulations are posted at each boat ramp landing, please read & adhere to these rules. Keep this awesome fishery strong. The lake is surrounded by approximately 50 lake houses, the majority are only occupied a few times a year. Traffic on the lake is slow, usually a handful of fishing boats most weekends. I've had it all to myself at times during the week. Our family lake house has been on Kentuck lake for the past 18 years. In all that time I've only seen about a dozen boats towing water skiers. We are predominately a nice & quiet fishing lake. Typical noises that can be heard are wind, water & the abundance of Bald Eagles soaring overhead. Just the way I like it!! You can get me out of the woods. But, you can't get the woods out of me!

Not to mention hilarious! All three cottages are warm, cheerful and charming and located below the main lodge/bar/hotel on the shores of pristine Clear Lake. Swimming and fishing is the best you could ask for on this immaculate, private-owned gem. In addition to the cottage rentals they have 6 hotel rooms. Each room is uniquely decorated in "northwoods" style (loons, white-tail deer, fish). If you are a CLEAN-FREAK this is the place for you! Absolutely spotless. At the time of my last visit in 2007, 5 of the 6 units were still 2-room "suites" with kitchenette's. Perfect for small families or couples (sigh...wonderful memories). Their Beachcomber Lounge is a local favorite. It entertains both pool and dart tournaments and offers some of the best home-cooked food in the area. Steve makes and proudly serves the best cheese-cake EVER! Come for the "local flavor", joke-of-the-day, fish tales and just downright good fun. We just happen to get #20. Uneven, no where to put your things out. To make matters worse, both sites you had to walk to your fire pit. How tacky. You could hear all conversations around you. I don't get how this campground was rated a 4.9 out of 5.0. They call it peaceful pines, there is NO peace. The boat launch is right there. Noisy from sunrise to sunset. If that didn't get to you, there is a major road with a lot of noisy traffic. We watched two sites across the way become vacant the day before we left. Check out 10 sharp, but I never saw anyone come out to the sites to check if it was ready for the next campers. Don't you think it could have been cleaned, maybe raked, something. Now the owners were pleasant, but man you talk about noise, from drilling, sawing, banging. I understand they have to work around the campground, but could the majority of the work wait until mid to late fall? We called before coming to find out if there was a place to take our dog to the water. Was told "Oh yes"! Down by the boat landing, take a right (risk your life with tree limbs). There is NO PLACE to take your dog. No beaches allow dogs. They tend to cater to the seasonal people and their cabins. It's sad that our first time will be our last time.
