You would think saving money on a room would sacrifice on something.... I wasnt expecting much but got so much more. Not only are the rooms cheaper then most they are large and clean!!! I cant say enough about the people that work there. It felt like home away from home , about the most polite and friendly people I've met on my travels. I'm not just saying that it's really true. They go out of there way to help you and make easy for you. I saved a ton of money on a taxi! they drove me everywhere I needed to go! gave me info about the history of sitka. showed me around, brought and picked me up at all times and places. even let me have a really late check out because of flight times at no charge. I really cant say enough good things about this place. when I return to sitka I will 100% stay here again.

The Sitka hotel has the charm and quaintness you would want and expect when visiting Alaska. Our…read moreroom had a small kitchenette which was nice to have. The location was perfect. We enjoyed how close it was to restaurants, shops, marina, parks and the beach. I would recommend staying here!

Upon arrival, the employee, instead…read moreof saying something like "Welcome in, have a seat in the lobby, but I can't check you in until 3PM"...they stormed past us and yelled "no check in until 3!" Okay, I didn't have a problem with 3PM, I just need to store my luggage for an hour. I put my luggage in their closet, came back for it an hour later, and it was gone. The employee left and wouldn't help find it. No one returned to the front. I called the desk, hoping to lure the employee. No luck. It took my friend, a local, calling to get them to come help, a half hour after this luggage search started. It was a mess. Finally located my luggage an hour later. And to make matters worse, our room wasn't ready for check in until 5PM... That's two hours late from their reservation guarantee. At this time, there were around 6 upset guests still waiting with us. The room itself was fine. But not worth the $230 a night. I only stayed one night and will not be back. The behavior from the employee was baffling. This review doesn't encapsulate every single interaction I had with them- that would be a looong and unhappy review. I can give it two stars rather than one due to the prime location.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience with this hotel -- specifically with the…read moremanager, Nick Lavender -- was upsetting and unacceptable. I left two very expensive items in my room after checkout: a pair of AirPods and a white noise machine. When I realized this, I called the hotel the next day hoping to retrieve them. Instead of showing any concern or willingness to help, Nick was immediately dismissive and defensive. I asked if he could investigate with his housekeeping staff, and he outright refused, saying he "trusts his staff" and doesn't know me, so I must be lying. I explained that I had only been at the hotel and my brother's house -- there was no other possible location where the items could have gone missing -- but he insisted he didn't believe me and made no effort to even pretend to look into it in an investigative manner. When I asked for the owner's contact information to escalate the issue, he refused again and said he wouldn't allow me to "bug him." The complete lack of empathy, accountability, or basic customer service was honestly shocking. I understand that things get left behind sometimes, but the unwillingness to investigate or even acknowledge the possibility of wrongdoing by staff is deeply troubling. I feel violated and disrespected. If you value your belongings and want to be treated with decency, I strongly recommend staying elsewhere.

They have s nice big fridge in the room, no microwave. Stains all over the furniture, again the furniture is ancient and they obviously don't clean it. On the plus side, they probably have the very best location and views in Sitka and the best restaurant, compliments to the Chef. The staff are very friendly and accommodating and there's a very homey atmosphere.

This hostel has many positives: - friendly staff…read more- fantastic prices (mixed dorm is about 10 TIMES cheaper than a 2-star hotel in town) - solid WiFi - welcoming environment However, a few things keep it from 5-stars: - The hostel is closed from 10am-6pm. This makes logistics very cumbersome if you're traveling with heavy bags. You have to plan your whole day around what you wan to have access to. - The hostel is closed for the night at 11pm. Want to go for a night hike, get into town, and have a burger and a beer? Good luck. I had to run to get back to the hostel before the 11pm lockout. - Getting a reservation is more difficult than it should be. You can't do it on the web. You either have to do it via email or phone. I HIGHLY recommend doing it on the phone. - no real "common area": there's not really a central location to hang out with fellow hostelers. Yep, there are a lot of hoops to jump through if you want to stay here, I'd say they are largely worth jumping through, though.

The beds are comfortable, the place is clean and the best place to "get your feet wet" at a hostel if you've never stayed in one before. I tried others around Alaska and they were okay but this one was by far the best. Walking to the downtown area is a short distance. The hostel has wireless but if you don't have a computer the library will let you use theirs for up to an hour. Washer and dryers are available as well as a kitchen and breakfast room. Fortunately, I met people from around the world and we all became fast friends. There were some college age hostelers and many over 50. It was a great mix of people and backgrounds. This hostel does not allow drinking or smoking. There is a curfew of 11pm with a lockout during the day and you'll sign up for one chore. No big deal, it just helps them keep the cost down and the cleanliness level up. They are open year round. It was cleaner than the hotel I stayed in over in Ketchikan for a fraction of the price. If you're going to Alaska I highly suggest you make it a point to visit Sitka. If you wish to take the economy route, like I did, this hostel was a great "first" for me! I hope I'll be able to return again in the years ahead.
