Inside the building was warmer, smelled of fresh milk and cheese, it was also extremely clean! Dave took his time to answer questions, he showed us how the milk enters the small building, how the workers prepare and salt the cheese by hand, and where the cheese is stored in the walk in refrigerator (a little chilly). We were able to sample some spicy pepper jack, soft sharp cheddar, and squeaky curds! It was well worth the drive and early wake up. We purchased these 3 cheeses for $30 and learned they will keep at room temperature for several days, and we plan to put them in our carry on luggage on the way home to share with friends and family. Thank you for the wonderful experience Union Star and we are happy to know how you turn some of your cheeses yellow!

Their retail shop is small but delightful, with a local, welcoming ambiance. They offer not just cheese but Scray merchandise, accessories, and even ice cream. This shop even has a drive thru available in case you need your cheese curds on the go. The fact that you could watch the factory floor from the retail shop was a fun surprise, taking me back to my Mr Rogers show-me-how-the-crayons-are-made days. Service is personable and I could tell that the person working knew most of the regulars. I'm sure all the locals already know about Scray Cheese but if you're from out of town, definitely make a stop. You'll be happy you did.

Instead, the vibe resonates like that of a small town grocery store that happens to sell their own awesome cheeses, enough so that I still second guess if I'm in the right place, with all the beer around. And then I'm like, "relax, it's beer and cheese, you're definitely in the right place, in more ways than one, guy!" And then I'm like, "Guy? That's not my name!" And then I'm like, "Why am I arguing out loud with myself in the middle of a cheese shop??" And then there's no way in heck that I can transition from the awkwardness, darn, and I gotta leave now, once again. My favorites are their string cheeses and the aged cheddars. The cheddars come in many years of age and are priced quite reasonably. I would personally not go above 5 years as hard limit and maybe 3-year as a soft limit, but then again, the state of Wisconsin kicked me out for not being Wisconsiny enough, so take that recommendation under advisement, and maybe you need to go for the 7-year or 10-year. Fresh curds are really good, too, if you're lucky enough, but usually we're coming through late and they're gone, boo hoo. The Asiago is also priced well and delicious. I get the sense that they know what they're doing here! Anyway, it's one of our favorites. Grow old, get out of the road, and stop in!

We were in Appleton and I realized they had a storefront so we stopped in. The store is small but has a selection of cheese, milks and local products as well as Lamers merch and some souvenirs. They sell servings of ice cream and have a couple of tables where families were enjoying their treats and visiting. We got some milk, cheese and chocolates. I'm looking forward to picking up some of their heavy whipping cream and half and half, all of which all of which are made from their rBGH-free milk. Good stuff from Wisconsin!
