Used to go here for my birthday every year, when it was on the other side of the building. And if it was 10 years ago, I'd review it at 4-5 stars. But now, they charge for everything, ($7 for lettuce that used to be free and comes with the meat everywhere else for free!), and the meat just isn't as good as it used to be. Galbi is too smoky, especially. The sides are just bland now and arent as numerous as they were as well, just four sides, and the Japchae is just meh too. I feel for Memphis if this is the only Korean place in town. They started vacuuming the place after the business opened for lunch. If I were the owners I would've come early to do that. 18% gratuity automatically added to the bill. And they calculate the amount based on the total with tax included so you tip on tax. Not cool. Paper plates and cups used. No lunch specials. The side dishes were just pathetic. We ordered two meat dishes so should've gotten double orders of each side dish but only got double on the rice. At first I was sad but after tasting the side dishes I really didn't care because we wouldn't have eaten them they were that bad. The broccoli could've been ok just plan and if they didn't pour all the spicy ketchup stuff on it. There was a dish that tasted like mashed potatoes. Kim chi was ok. The bean sprout dish was meh. Just shy $50 for two meat dishes. When you cook the edges is hotter than the center. Pork belly had zero flavor. Water is Kirkland bottled water. The owners seemed nice and I want them to succeed. I've been three times practically in a row now. Next time I want to try the gaegogi if they have it. Everything has been so good, and the waitress running the lunch shift has always gone out of her way to take care of me. She knows that menu and she knows those dishes. My favorite thing so far is that Korean fried squid. Finally something I can taste! I spent three days in bed with a stomach bug and that was my first real meal. It was just what I needed with the protein and the spice level to cheer me up. And the vegetables helped bring me back to life. What an excellent meal! Then I had the bibambop. It too was excellent, but I found the dish to be too big for a single serving. Especially for lunch. It was nearly $20 too. I felt there should be a lunch portion. It would be perfect for two people though. My third time I had the Haemul Pajeon which they call Korean Pancakes. You can get with or without kimchi and I decided to have mine with. It also had some octopus and squid. It was pretty good, but it wasn't like I expected. I thought it should have a sweet element or at least be served with a sweet sauce. It was served with soy sauce instead. Very good though. It did not disappoint. I love the vegetables. I loved eating in Korea when I visited 20 years ago. This is as close as I'll get to in Memphis. This is the only Korean place I have been to but most of my friends say it's the best. I have been multiple times with large groups and small groups but I never kept track of what I liked so I made sure to this time! They have grills at some of the tables so you can cook your own meat. I thought that sounded like a bad idea (because I was worried I would forget about it) but it turned out well and we had a lot of fun. My favorites ended up being the two types of Korean beef, Galbi and Bulgogi. The kimbop was my favorite appetizer. I didn't like the dumplings or the pancake but there wasn't a specific reason beyond personal taste. The beef tongue creeped me out even though it was flattened and you couldn't see the tase buds. The taste was also just too much for me so I didn't eat more than a bit. They also have private karaoke in the back with a nice variety of songs in a bunch of different languages. It costs a bit but the privacy is worth it. I have done it a few times for some birthday parties and stuff. You can also order food while you eat though all I remember us getting was the kimbop. This place was pretty good, not the best Korean place that I've been but it's hard to compete with L.A. and ATL Korea Town. This is the first Korean restaurant I've been to where you have to pay for side dish refills, they usually come free with the meal. As far as the taste of the kimchi, it tasted like it came out of a jar and the other side dishes were lacking in flavor. Not surprised though...most Korean restaurants are like this unless you go to a heavily populated Korean community. These are the main reasons for the 4 (really 3 1/2) star review. For my meal I had the kimchi beef short rib hot pot and black bean noodles (jajangmyeon). Like i said earlier, not the best that I've had but still really good. The hotpot was great...had a lot of flavor and they didn't skimp on the portions. The black bean noodle was also very good and had a lot of flavor...bad thing about it was i couldn't find or taste any pork bits (might of been a veggie dish) and this meal usually comes with pickled daikon radishes which I did not get. Well... Let's start with COVID-19 protocol. I give them 5 stars! All the tables are well spaced. Wait staff was wearing a mask and gloves. But didn't seem wait staff was changing gloves after touching bunch of stuff. But better than most. We also had to sign tracing log sheet. Which we were gladly fill out. Now to the food. Not good. Side dishes (5) are so so and cheapest dishes you can think of. Bulgogi was meh. Beef seem over seasoned as in it's been sitting for a long time. Bibimbop had GROUND BEEF and barely any!!! I messed up and went to the wrong location. The other restaurant (Midtown?) didn't come up in Waze, so I assumed that this was the place I was supposed to meet my cousin. He quickly course-corrected and met us at this location. The 2 star rating doesn't reflect the food...which was fine...not the best Korean food that I've had but certainly not the worst. The service was abysmal. When we walked in, there were only about 4 tables occupied with several other tables that needed bussing. The young man that greeted us was very flustered and ordered us to sit down and wait...because there weren't any tables available. That should have been my first clue...this is a pretty large restaurant and there was almost nobody there. But, in his defense, he really was the only one working there. I don't know...maybe he was working the kitchen as well?? Anyway, we were eventually seated at a table that had a bbq built in (which is what we wanted...but we didn't have a chance to request it due to the way we were brusquely "greeted"). We were seated and said that we were waiting for a third person. Instead of asking if we wanted water or to maybe order appetizers while we waited, we were ignored for about 30 minutes. Several attempts to make eye contact were made to no avail. Once my cousin showed up, it took another 10-15 minutes to get things going... but we were finally able to order food and drinks (all at once since we weren't sure that we'd ever see him again). The dumpling appetizer was good and the food that we prepared at the table (grilling) was fine. The service was really awful. I've been to DWJ 3 times, twice in their previous location in the same strip mall and once and the new, smaller locale. Both times were consistent: the food was good, but the service was abysmal, and the prices high. Korean restaurants aren't exactly common in the area and the food is good (in my limited knowledge of Korean cooking), so I'd be willing to forgive the prices a bit, but they actually went up between visits, and coming here always means waiting a LONG time, regardless on how full (or empty) the restaurant is or what time it is. I feel like the issue is simply due to lack of staff. I've never see more than 2 staff members in the restaurant at the same time, and I believe sometimes is just 1 person cooking and taking orders. You'll get to the restaurant and see most tables still full of plates. Is not great. Food wise, I had the bibimbap, a seafood soup and multiple appetizers. Everything was very good, but not worth the 50 minutes wait or the chronically empty water cup. read more

After trying the only other korean bbq restaurant in memphis, my dinner companion and I made our way to DWJ last week to try what DWJ had to offer. It is located in a strip mall type of building with plenty of parking around. Upon entering this restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised with the prompt greeting/service and the clean and nice interior. We were seated in a private booth with a countertop grill upon request. The prices are similar to that of the other korean bbq restaurant in memphis. The service here is more of a business patron-server relationship, rather than a personable hospitality type of feeling (but this isn't a bad thing! They were nice enough and very prompt and professional). My dinner companion found the food here better than at Asiana Garden. One thing to note is that refills of their sides are $1 each (but you should be there to eat the BBQ, not the sides...). Not sure of what the other reviewers experienced, but we found the cut of our meat just fine, and we got everything that we asked for. I found at least 4 other tables were occupied by korean patrons, which is always a good sign for a korean restaurant. I can't say that this restaurant is better or worse than Asiana Garden, but I do know that I will be back for my next korean BBQ craving :) read more

Disappointing! I went to this restaurant for Mother's Day with a friend and service was horrible. As we walked in, it was pretty empty and we requested to sit at a table that had a grill so that we could cook the Korean BBQ. Once seated,we placed our drink orders and reviewed the menu. We all got our drinks and ordered our entrees. It took about 20-25 minutes to get our food and when we got it, it was cooked. We clearly stated we wanted to cook it ourselves. Hence asking for a table with a grill. The server just looked at us and didn't say anything. Plus we had to ask for additional aides when the menu clearly states 3 sides per entree. Overall, the dinning experience was terrible. Food wasn't great as I have had better Korean BBQ. Plus service was absolutely horrible. I really liked my meal at Du Won Jung. There were just a few issues with the service and food that are keeping me from rating DWJ a little higher. I came here with my mom and brother (Louie W.) for lunch early on Thursday. I mention the day and time to account for the spotty service we received. The place was pretty empty -- only two or three other tables were occupied during the time we were there -- and the host/server seemed to spend a lot of time out of reach. We had to stand around awkwardly for a several minutes as we waited for him to notice us and give us a table. We ordered from both the lunch menu and the dinner menu. From the lunch menu, my brother ordered one of the bulgogi combos. From the dinner menu, I ordered dolsot bibimbap for myself and haemool jungol or the table to share. - Dolsot bibimbap: A hot stone bowl full of rice, seasoned veggies, and beef, with a fried egg on top? I meannnn I'm not sure how you can mess that up. DWJ's iteration was very good, although I think I would have liked that egg cooked just a touch less to maximize the creamy, eggy goodness of it all. The overall flavor was really nutty -- tons of sesame aroma. Yum. - Haemool jungol: A bunch of seafood and vegetables, simmered in a super spicy sauce and served piping hot. Sounds tasty, right? It was. My only complaint was that a lot of the seafood clearly came straight from the bag. Given that the dish cost over thirty bucks, I was expecting everything to be fresh. There WAS fresh crab (halved, still in the shell) and shrimp, and the mountain of spicy sprouts made me incredibly happy. I just question whether that $32 price tag was justified. My brother's combo looked good; there was plenty of food, although all the side dishes that came with it were repeats of the appetizers that were brought for the entire table. There was a bit of pineapple that would have been a nice semi-desserty touch, except it was completely unripe. That's nitpicky of me to mention, I know, but I wonder why they didn't just serve a fruit that's in season. Weird. DWJ is probably the best option for authentic Korean food in Memphis -- I don't know of any place else with a comparable menu. We have a lot of Korean restaurants here in Toronto and we eat Korean food at least once, if not twice a week. Needed my kimchi fix, so off we headed to DWJ. Spouse had the kimchi-chigae, I had the cham-pong. Chigae was good, kimchi was definitely good - other panchan offerings, so-so. Cham-pong was ok, not enough gochu and not enough seafood. We were driving through Memphis and wanted to stop at one of the best bibimbap restaurants there. This one was one to stop at. Well, maybe five years ago it was. We should have known by the paper sign on the door stating they no longer serve sushi...or the fact that there was no bibimbap on the menu we were given....or the fact that no one was there at lunchtime ... that it wasn't going to be a stellar experience. We ordered the bulgogi. Not much else on the menu. It was ok. Nothing spectacular. Run of the mill. Definitely not somewhere to drive out of your way to or ever come back. The staff was friendly....the place itself nothing to write home about. Oh and rd bathroom was filthy and had no toilet paper in the stall. I came here for lunch and I haven't been here in over 5 years. I was meeting some friends and one of them wanted to come here. I got youkkgaejang which is spicy soup with glass noodles and some vegetables. The price point for lunch was really great, however the amount of food that they give is not good. They also give side dishes but if you want more side dish, you have to pay a refill fee of .65 To the average person this might not sound too bad. But because I am used to going to lots of Korean restaurants in other cities, this restaurant has a lot to catch up to. The taste in the food of what I've ordered however, was honestly good. I just finished the review for Asiana Garden, and it's hard not to review DWJ together. As of January 2013, there are only two and a three-fourth Korean Restaurants in the City of Memphis. There are Asiana Gardan and DWJ, the two full Korean restaurants. The 3/4th are Kwik Check/Crazy Noodle, which is half a Korean restaurant, and some ghetto market place that serves Bi Bim Bop in Orange Mount with the final quarter (and yes, I've been there!) Like Asiana Garden, due to the lack of other Korean restaurants, DWJ automatically gets a three out of five stars. But I gave them 4 stars because I cannot give them 3.5... The Korean BBQ is magnificent. Way better than Asiana Garden. The soups here are great. But kimchi here are not as good as Asiana Garden, nor are their other dishes. It would be a 4-star place if they could make better kimchi. Unlike Asiana Garden, where there is nothing I would recommend people to avoid, they are a few items here that I've had that I would avoid. Jap chae is one of them. Avoid it. I heard about Du Won Jung (now DWJ) from a fellow hiker whose boyfriend is a Korean American. I have been here a couple times since then and finally got around to write a review. My constant dining companion is pretty stubborn when it comes to ethnic foods, he knows what he likes and he sticks with it. I, on the other hand, always want to try something new, so when he quickly decided on ordering his favorite Korean dish: Bulgolgi, I was still debating if I should go with the pork belly, or grilled eel. Then came our waitress, and I opted for none of the above: seafood noodle soup it was. The cute waitress smiled approvingly and I guess I made a good choice, despite the fact that I am not really a seafood person. We love Korean food for those little side dishes they automatically serve before main dishes arrive. They are mostly plant-based and pickled: different kinds of kimchi (napa cabbage, daikon radish, cucumbers, etc.), sweet potato shoots, seaweed, bean sprouts, mashed potato, whatever. Each restaurant has its own selection or rotation, normally around 6 to 8 dishes for one meal. I consider DWJ's selection just average and none stood out. Interestingly I noticed they have a refill price on the menu, which is the first time I noticed on a menu from Korean restaurants. We never asked for refills, so I do not know if other Korean restaurants would charge for that too. Our entrees arrived. Bulgogi is thinly sliced ribeye steak marinated and grilled Korean style, served on a sizzling hot plate. We both agree that DWJ's version is very good. My bowl of noodle soup was steaming hot and looked impressive: egg, squids, a couple clams(or mussels) and thick udon noodles. The broth is probably bonito based, which is a stable in both Japanese and Korean cuisines, but it's a bit bland to me. Squids were a bit chewy and rubbery. Egg was perfectly runny in the middle. I could tease my hubby all I want for always ordering the same thing, but clearly his choice topped mine this time. Well, I won't tell him that a CNN Go readers poll in 2011 ranked Bulgogi as number 23 on World's 50 most delicious foods, while my favorite Korean food Kalbi (Korean grilled short-ribs) ranked a lowly number 41 on the same list. That's a bit embarrasing for me considering I am more of a foodie between the two of us. Korean food actually is known to be quite spicy, and DWJ does offer a lot of spicy items, though neither one of us chose anything spicy this time. They also have the tabletop grills that you will find in most if not all Korean restaurants. Like their neighbor across the water, Korean eat sushi (they call it Gimbap) on a regular basis, so it's more natural for me to see DWJ serve sushi than a Thai place. Like all the Korean restaurants I have been to, it's very clean, and spacious too. Service was warm and courteous. I do not understand what kind of bad night a previous reviewer had, but DWJ is in a safe area along the busy Hack Cross Road south of Winchester, tucked away between a stand-alone AT&T store and a stand-alone Buffalo Wild Wing, next to a UPS store and a Lenny's Sub Shop. read more

You get a bang for your buck and the food makes DWJ my go-to Korean restaurant in town. I often get either the hot pot on a cold day or daeji bulgolgi on any other day. Their hot pot serves up to 2-4 people and is a bit on the pricey side but it is all worth it! Their beef is my absolute favorite and I always get to take a bunch of leftovers home because I can never finish the whole thing. The best part about this location is that the side dishes are automatically included so basically I get unlimited potato salad and kimchi, if I bother the staff enough lol. read more

The server is super attentive and will get you things you did not even ask for-such as extra napkins, plastic utensils and styrofoam cup with lid for toddler, etc. He also wipes down the high chair with a Lysol wipe before bringing it to the table-warms up my little OCD heart LOL! Now this is my go to restaurant for Korean food here in Memphis. I did a review on Asiana Garden, so it would only be right to review DWJ too. My favorite dishes here- Eun Dae Gu Jim (Spicy black cod with radish and vegetables) which is the BOMB here, but it's not cheap... It costs about $18. Daeji Bulgogi (Spicy pork), which is delicious. Their Kalbi (Marinated short ribs) is good too. They give you lettuce and sauce to eat with the BBQ which is soooo good and healthy. Their Bi Bim Bap (Mixed rice with vegetables) is delicious as well. Dak Galbi (Spicy chicken) is pretty good here. Soon Du Bu (Spicy tofu soup) is ok. The broth kinda lacks flavor, but it's ok. Their Kim Bap- (Korean style sushi) is pretty good. The only dish that I really don't particularly care for at the restaurant is the Ojingo Bokum (Spicy Squid with vegetables) which happens to be my all time favorite Korean dish. It has too much juice in it or something. At Asiana Garden, the dish seems to be grilled and the sauce sticks on the squid and vegetables. At DWJ it's too wet and runny for me. Service... They have always been nice to me, (As I'm a regular customer and I've been coming here since they opened at this location, and when they were at the other location accross from McDonalds which is now Cocktails bar. I'm used to Koreans as my whole family on my mother's side is Korean, so I guess it doesn't bother me as much as it would someone who hasn't been around them. They will check on you and refill your water or banchan. Now, they are slow... and at times, extremely slow, so don't expect speedy service. I took away a half star for that reason, but good food is worth the wait to me. I had one bad experience with an older waiter with glasses that overcharged me, thus taking away another half star. I paid it, and the next time my kids and I wanted Korean, we went to Asiana Garden and regretted that decision quickly. At DWJ, we ordered 2 Dak galbi's, 2 Daeji bulgogi's and he charged me $15.99 for each entree which is crazy because all the times that I've been coming here, they charge $13.99 for each of these entrees. It's not a big deal, but to charge $2 extra per entree was really offensive to me. It''s not like it didn't know the prices... LOL. He charged $2 for extra rice, when it should have just been $1, as each entree comes with a bowl of rice. It was 5 of us, so if you do the math, he charged me an extra $1. I just took away from the tip I left him. The total bill was $72. I still left $7 dollars as a tip which was about 10%, but I shouldn't have left that. THE WORST SERVICE EVER!!! Enter the restaurant, I'm the only one in the place. I'm seated by an extremely "bothered " young woman who sat me down and left. I mean it - left until I flagged her down and interrupted her very important texting. I then was successful in ordering a bibimbop and a bottle of beer and water if it wasn't a bother. Now for the best I've seen.,. She brings me a bottle of beer with a bottle opener! Leaves it on the table for me to open and she's gone - again! This is just precious. Anyway, back to the food. Korean bbq (at the table) is always nice tho' an order of two meats to grill will be too much for just two people. They grill it for you (in the kitchen) if you only order one meat so I usually don't bother. Get more people to go, get the tabletop bbq and if you like spicy food and seafood, get the soon doh bu - it's a spicy seafood stew. No need for reservations. There are always lots of tables available. It's a big place and almost never packed. They have a sushi bar as well but I've never tried it. The only complaint I have of this restaurant is the free appetizers that they provide don't match up to those in other Korean restaurants I go to in the bigger cities. :) read more
