If you don't plan ahead or know exactly what you're looking for, it's hard to choose a winery to visit when in wine country. There are so many and they all look beautiful and sound delicious. There was nothing particular that led us to visiting Dutton-Goldfield besides driving by and thinking it seemed like a lovely place to sit outside and do a tasting. We were happy we ended up there! Dutton-Goldfield is all about Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, but they have so many variations I think most any wine-drinker would find something they're into. For instance, I rarely select a pinot noir when it comes to red wine. I prefer something more full-bodied. But I tasted some Pinots here that I really liked that were darker and heavier than I expected. I was also into their pinot noir rose. Just let your server know what you like. We didn't get any food but it does look like they offer small bites during some hours. read more

Had an absolutely amazing visit to Dutton-Goldfield on a local friend's recommendation to add it to our weekend Healdsburg-Sebastopol itinerary. In a sea of vineyards and great wines, the entire experience stood out, in no small part thanks to the fantastic staff member, Barbara, who was an absolute delight. She was so knowledgeable about the history of Dutton-Goldfield's vineyards around the bay, and so welcoming, that my boyfriend and I joked multiple times when she went back inside to get the next pour that we wanted her to adopt us as grandkids. We went on a Saturday afternoon and were surprised that the tasting room was entirely empty - it was like having a private tasting to ourselves, on their gorgeous, relaxing patio. The charcuterie and cheese board that we ordered was par excellence, and the mix of wines (a Guwertztraminer to start, a crisp chard, and a variety of pinots and syrahs) was excellent. We had done a tasting earlier in the day at a gorgeous outdoor vineyard known for its sparkling wines that had a very friendly staff but very little in the way of wine education, and it made the experience at D-G stand out that much more. The combination of flavors + knowledge + hospitality made it a no brainer to sign up for a membership, and text all of our friends to tell them it was a must visit for future trips. I can't wait to come back, and to be a part of the D-G community over many years to come! read more

We visited Dutton-Goldfield Winery on an early Friday the morning and had the whole place to ourselves. We were hosted by 2 lovely ladies who shared the history of D-G and how they played a huge part in the development of the surrounding area and wineries. We tasted several wines, starting with a Pinot Blanc! What a lovely white wine. This was an easy "Add it to the order" selection. We then tried 4 additional Pinot Noirs. Each was unique and delicious. A bit more divergence in the group as to favorites but the box was filled with 6 bottles in all. The patio was peaceful and private. The staff was so friendly, engaging and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend any fan of Pinot to visit. read more

Amazing surprise! I had never heard of Dutton Goldfield before, and were invited to join friends to a tasting that they had received as a gift. Excited to return to get back to Russian River Pinots, and they did not disappoint. Their tasting room is kinda quirky - we sat in a nice courtyard on a beautiful afternoon, but while it's enclosed, it's right on the corner of a street, and there's car noise. And the Pinots are great! They get their grapes from vineyards scattered from different hillsides around the valley, and they did not disappoint. Since then, started finding them in stores back home (who knew?) and they've been great there too. Love them - two thumbs up! read more

I've tasted a couple of times at Dutton-Goldfield Winery and really enjoy this tasting room and their wines too! Dutton-Goldfield Winery tasting room is located in Sebastopol. It's a large green building that you can't miss! There is ample parking behind their building. When you walking in the main doors you will first notice their beautiful patio with a fountain in the middle. Then you will see the main tasting room, which has an expansive bar area as well as a couple of seating options. The tasting room is nice and bright with natural light. The patio is a nice spot to taste and feels very serene. They have a great selection and tastings are $30 per person. The tasting includes a selection of 5 wines. They also have a couple other tasting options including a Wine and Cheese Experience and a all Pinot Noir tasting! I enjoy their Rose and the Pinot Noir's, which are excellent too! I highly recommend stopping in when you are in the area! read more

They have a medium sized patio and indoor space on a relatively quiet street corner in Sebastopol. It's wine tasting room, not at a vineyard, but the patio area was still very quaint and nice and a lovely place to sit and try some wines. The service was great and they're very dog friendly. The wines were quite nice with mostly pinot, but a variety of substyles and flavors in their pintos. read more

"DG" is a nice winery to check out some examples of well-balanced pinots, chards, zins, and even some darn fine dry gewurztramiiner (try it -- you'll like it!). The vineyards that DG sources fruit from span a variety of AVAs, including Sonoma Coast, Green Valley, and Marin. If you're a pinot fan, you definitely should check out the winery. To be completely honest we picked Dutton-Goldfield Winery for a tasting because they were part of the Visa Signature Wineries that offered a 2-fer-one tasting of their wines. As it turns out we did not use the offer because I purchased 4 bottles and with that tasting fees were waived for my wife and I. "Elite tip" check in on Yelp and you receive 10% off all purchases. Bingo, in the end, the Cheap Pete side of me was satisfied. Ok, now to the wines! Dutton-Goldfied is mainly a Pinot Noir house but does make an incredible Riesling and some very nice Chardonnay's. The Dutton Family own and farm a very large vienyard and the fruit from the vineyard is well respected in the wine industry. This is apparent when you perform the Five S's of wine tasting. Our favorite was the Redwood Ridge Pinot Noir. This pinot displayed a bolder style that I tend to like and as a bonus this happened to be my wife's favorite she tasted that day. Tasting outdoors has its ups and downs but I can't fault the winery for that. All in all our tasting at Dutton-Goldfied was enjoyable and deserving of a 4 star review. read more

If you have a dog and want to be able to sit INSIDE a tasting room with your pet, this is a great spot in the Sebastopol area. My SO and I decided to take a day trip with our greyhound and chose this place because of its dog-friendliness and because they have a sushi pairing menu. While the sushi itself was pretty standard (lots of rice, not a lot of fish), we liked that they paired the sushi with both reds and whites, and enjoyed the experience. Overall, the thing that stood out most about this place was the wonderful service. The staff who helped us was wonderfully informed about the wines we were trying and also did a good job of guessing what other wines we would like. The venue itself kind of felt like a corporate chain hotel (eg Courtyard Marriot?) so I wouldn't come here if you're looking for rustic charm or architectural interest. BUT if you want thoughtful hosts who can engage both you and your pup, this is an excellent spot. read more

We stopped in to this tasting room based on a recommendation from another winery. I admit I had never heard of it beforehand and we ended up buying a case of wine! We were lucky that it was a quiet afternoon and were able to do a tasting without an appointment. Barbara was very friendly and knowledgeable. The tasting room is both modern and cozy. We tried a wide array of both white and red wines and bought the Cherry Ridge Vineyard Syrah, Walker Hill Vineyard Chardonnay , Deviate Pinot Noir, Fox Den Vineyard Pinot Noir , Redwood Ridge Pinot Noir, Morelli Lane Vineyard Zinfandel , Green Valley Vineyard Gewurztraminer and the Chileno Valley Vineyard Riesling. We walked in, 3 people were walking out, just a nicely dressed guy who asked us if we had a reservation. We did not. The gentleman said sorry, we have 5 people coming in and I'm the only one here. Make a reservation to come another time. A fifth-generation farmer, Steve grew up with a love of driving tractors, and without any doubt about his future career. His father, Warren Dutton, had begun growing grapes in the western reaches of Russian River Valley in the mid-1960s, at a time when most people thought the area was too cool to grow fruit for quality still wine. Steve started working with his father when he was five years old, and joined Dutton Ranch full-time in 1987. Today, along with his mother and brother, he manages the family business, which has grown from its original 35-acre home shop vineyard to over 80 separate vineyards comprising more than 1,000 acres throughout western Russian River Valley. Dan entered the University of California at Davis, graduating with an M.S. in Enology in 1986. He gained knowledge on the job with stints at Robert Mondavi Winery and Schramsberg as well as winemaking in Portugal for two years. He found his passion in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, first as the winemaker at the Burgundian-focused La Crema Winery, and then at Hartford Court, which was created under his direction. Dan's appreciation for the beauty of the extraordinary landscape around our home is reflected in his winemaking. Together, they founded Dutton-Goldfiled in 1998. Their wines are very reasonable. Price ranges from $28 to $72. Many of their Pinot Noir sells out just after its release. Visited Dutton-Goldfield yesterday for the second time. Single vineyard pinots make up the majority of the winery's production, and they are excellent. Vineyards are both local (Russian River and Green Valley of Russian River AVAs) and farther afield on the North Coast. However, what I loved from Dutton-Goldfield on my first visit 3 years ago and what I enjoyed on this second visit were the white varietals: Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling. Winemaker Dan Goldfield makes really lovely dry single varietals of each of these. My favorite remains the Gewürztraminer: so light colored it's almost colorless; super fragrant, floral, grape & lychee on the nose; and light and dry on the palate, with a pleasant mineral note. We had a lovely tasting seated on the patio, but there is also a spacious tasting bar and seating inside. We'll be back for sure. read more

Yo, I love this place so much I made an actual commitment and became a member. I can't even commit to eating breakfast everyday and that's like a thing, according to my doctor. Dutton wines are just a dream. I'm a big, bold red kind of broad. I'm the type of gal who sidles up to the tasting room and demands red pours only. This is also a taste thing, white wines taste bitter to me. Also, friends don't let friends drink Chardonnay. But I've not had a bad sip here and I trust them fully. Dave is our favorite, he's always very gracious and he always remembers my favorites every time I see him. The tasting room is very homey and comfortable, I love all the little tchotchkes you can pick up as well. They make great gifts, especially the kitchen towels. Now the wines. Devils Gulch is my favorite, as is the Deviate. That's a really special blend and I highly recommend it as a gift if you're looking to impress someone. This is the wine that when they drink it will let them know that you KNOW your stuff. I really like Angels Camp too. So, Dutton is a hefty portion of my obnoxious wine collection and I'm not ashamed to admit that. I know what I like and DG is it. read more

We had very recently heard of this tasting room from a friend when we just happened to drive by on our way from Bodega Bay last weekend. Actually, it was Labor Day. Robin was our server and you wouldn't know it was her third day! They are dog friendly which is always important to me because we don't like to leave our baby girl, Madison, alone. She was even allowed in the tasting room, not just the patio! We ended up buying 4 bottles of wine to take home and they waived one tasting fee. Stopped by Dutton-Goldfield Winery at the recommendation of 2 other wineries we had visited earlier that day.....& we had been specifically advised to seek out their Gewurztraminer Another winery had given us a coupon for a free DG "reserve" tasting & we tried to use it but were told that "reserve" didn't mean what we thought it did & we were allocated their "regular" lineup. The nice girl helping us looked embarrassed since she had played up the "reserve" list - but the guy working there made her change the coupon - boo on you! Recommendation that maybe you should not publish coupons if you don't intend to honor them? Just saying.... Well, we told her to forget the coupon b/c we really wanted to taste the reserves & good thing for them b/c we ended up getting more than a few bottles that day & surpassed their "Buy $X.xx and get the tasting fee waived".....so why start us out w/ such a bad 1st impression? Dutton-Goldfield is one of the best pinot noir producers in California. Their chardonnays are also superlative. Their wines are from growers in the Russian River area, so although rich and concentrated, they also have a bit of elegance that some pinots from the hotter parts of wine country lack. The place is easy to find. It's a big green warehouse, just off of the Gravenstein Highway (Rte 116) on the east side. The tasting room is basically a room in a warehouse. Sorry, folks, Dutton-Goldfield is about the wine. If you want to sit in a million dollar boutique and sip mediocre wine, there's no shortage of that stuff in this part of the world (hint: drive over to Napa). The staff at Dutton-Goldfield are fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and down-to-earth. I stop at this place every single time I'm in California, and I like seeing the familiar faces--people who actually recognize me, too! After a quick lunch at Bill's Deli & Grocery on Gravenstein Hwy in Sebastopol, we headed across the street to the new Dutton-Goldfield tasting room. I visited Dutton-Goldfield at their shared location with Balletto Vineyards last year, and loved the wines. With the proximity to Merry Edwards, this was a great chance to pop in for a quick visit to taste through the new releases. The new facility serves the dual purpose of being a tasting room and their warehouse storage facility. It's a nice open space with a contemporary feel and artwork on the walls. While we were there, winemaker and co-proprietor Dan Goldfield was blasting out some Stevie Ray Vaughn tunes to test out the sound system. Dutton-Goldfield is a no-frills tasting experience; just extremely solid wines served at the bar- perfect for a drop-in tasting. The Wines- -2008 Gewurztraminer, Green Valley- Peach cobbler and crisp citrus fruit, with honey and heather notes. Nice and refreshing with good aromatics---good to very good---$25. -2007 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay, Russian River Valley-All barrel fermented in 40% new French oak with twice monthly lees stirring, 100% malo. THIS IS SERVICE ONLY. DID NOT TASTE WINE. (One employee made this review what it is) I hate, hate, hate doing this but it has to be said. We had a large group and had called two weeks ahead to make an appointment. The service prior to walking in was always super polite and professional. Let me take fault for something here: the winery asked if we would call if we were running late, so I did. Or at least I thought I had. I did call Goldfield winery, told them we were running late, gave her my name, and the lady politely told me not to worry, we had plenty of time. (our appointment was at 1:30, I asked to move it to 2pm. she said "absolutely") Granted, I made a huge fail, but wouldn't you think that this would have happened before? Turns out, I had accidentally called Goldfield Vineyards, although I am a little annoyed the woman acted like she knew what I was talking about and told me to come at two. We didn't have an appointment there, at all. We found this all out because we, being a bit earlier than we thought (I called at our first stop, but our second stop was much quicker), dropped by Red Car Wine Co. who happily took us in for a short tasting. We then walked over to DG at 2:05. Thinking we were five minutes late, we were quite shocked by the hostile attitude at the front desk. First, we were ignored. When someone did help us (manager? not sure) she was openly hostile to me and my sister. She told us we were super late for our appointment. I told her I called, and she said, "that's impossible, our phones have been working all day." Wow. I'm sorry. OK, OK, I had called the wrong vineyard...but still, it was an honest mistake. And even so, we were 35 minutes late and the tasting room had a grand total of four other people in it. She said they had a wedding party coming in at 3:30 and they couldn't accommodate us, so, even if I had called and pushed it back I would have been rebuked, right? Or, was that "can not accommodate" a "WILL not accommodate."? Great business strategy. Anyway. my sister got right to the point. Can you guys take us, even though we are late? Response: no. All right. So we didn't get to sample your wine, but boy did we get a whiff of the attitude! There is NEVER a need to be openly hostile with potential buyers, unless they are hostile to you, and even then... I felt like I was in the principles office. I'm sure this review will evoke a response from the winery, but, if you see my other reviews it will be clear that I'm not some nasty irresponsible person going around trying to slander companies. Like I said in my Red Car review: customer service distinguishes companies that make wine to wineries that sell wine. You lost my service, my rec, and the rec of the 13 people I was with. No offense to the yelp gods, but I tend to look to Wine Enthusiast discussion boards for winery recommendations over yelp. So I checked out those discussions when my hubbie and I were planning a wine-tasting trip to Sonoma County and found that Dutton-Goldfield was virtually on everyone's top 5 list and then yelped it and read all the great reviews here. After going, I understand why. Let's begin with what everyone goes to Healdsburg/Sebastopol for: the pinots. Dutton-Goldfield had four or five pinots when we tasted there, and they were all unique and delicious. They varied from the lighter, fruit-forward classic pinots to the richer, almost-cab pinots. All of them were good, but I particularly liked the Devil's Gulch, which was on the richer side of the spectrum. Their whites were delicious as well, I particularly liked their chardonnay. And the tasting room was just lovely. It would be a beautiful winery to have a party or special event. The staff were really friendly and knowledgeable as well. When we get our dream house with a wine cellar, I'm signing up for their wine club. read more

What a fun winery! I came here with a big group and Sarah was such a wonderful host. She was informative, friendly, and even treated us to some exclusive wines in honor of our friend's birthday. I absolutely loved the Sanchietti Pinot. The Pinot Blanc was also really light and refreshing, surprisingly so. They served shrimp crostini that was absolutely delectable and flavorful. I've had the Dutton Ranch Chardonnay and I like the fact that it's more in the style of a Burgunduy than a California. When I first started getting into wine CA and Italy were all I knew and the ways wine were produced were also very specific in my mind. I have driven by so many times, but I am usually saturated in pinot when I do. I finally had a chance to stop and had the reserve tasting. All of the wines were deeply flavored and elegant. The gentleman who poured for me was friendly and gave me an informative lecture on the pinot clones in the Russian River and the Green Valley. Dijon 667, Dijon 777, which are California-style and the Pommard, which is less fruity and more tannic and acidic. Wine nerd alert! Most of the wines have nice reviews and 91 scores and up from the wine magazines, but most of the wines are over $55 dollars. I have been finding strong pinots in the 30s this season, so I would rather stock up on those. They have two amazing chardonnays, the Rued and the Walker Hill, which scored 95 and 94. You don't often get to taste wines that are that well reviewed. I liked the Walker Hill a little better as it was a touch dryer and I bought one for, gulp, $50. incredible experience! walked in with a complete set table for our tasting, with customized menus that had our names printed. it was our first tasting in the area (out of towners) so we didn't know what to expect & this exceeded our expectations by a lot!! it set a high bar for the rest of our tastings. Megan was so accommodating & knowledgable. she gave us plenty of maps & brochures for the area & gave us recommendations for beaches, restaurants, & other wineries. we even got to chat a bit with one of the owners that was just stopping in. their Rosé is the best i've ever had!!! read more

I came here the first time on a recommendation from the nice people at Iron Horse. We were looking for good wineries to visit in the Green Valley area and this one was highly regarded for Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. Dutton-Goldfield makes phenomenal wines... my favorite of which is the 2009 Rued Clone Chardonnay. This is THE chard that made me start liking California chardonnay. It's so un-like anything else I've ever had. It's full & round with mouthwatering acidity, abundant fruit and just enough oak. No butterball palate dud here. They have a great Syrah & lots of delicious Pinots as well... I recently joined their wine club and this month they sent Pinot Blanc! The club is really a great deal. You get a discount on all wines, comped tastings every time you visit, first dibs on new releases and you always have the option to opt-out. This is really a great place worth stopping at if you are in Sebastopol looking for well-made, delicious wines! read more
