I went here when I was 13, now 46 it still is the same. The shoo fly pie is amazing. The homemade root beer is just as good. The souvenirs were not that expensive. The windmill is the best part. It pulls you in. read more

This was hyped so much but it was a let down. It's a lot smaller than advertised. The prices were higher than we saw in other places. The souvenirs were better elsewhere. You do get samples of pie. The root beer was ok. Honestly I would say skip this place. The people were nice though. read more

Dutch Haven Shoo-Fly Pie Bakery - Bakeries Near Me - Ronks, Pennsylvania

We stopped at Dutch Haven after lunch across the parking lot, drawn in by the windmill, which stands like a beacon for travelers aong Route 30 and the mildly curious. It is the sort of landmark that promises something memorable, or at least something sweet. Inside, the place leans heavily into its role as a stop-off for visitors. Shelves are filled with faux-Amish goods, hex signs, and a cheerful assortment of bric-a-brac, along with shirts that seem very proud of nearby towns with names that invite, shall we say a certain kind of humor. It feels less like a bakery and more like a general store that wandered into a theme. The people working there are genuinely kind, and generous with samples, which is always a wise and welcome strategy. We tried a bit of the shoo fly pie, and in the past we've tried some cookies, root beer, and ice cream. They were all perfectly fine. Pleasant, even. But they did not distinguish themselves from the many other places in Lancaster County offering the same treats with equal or better competence. Nothing here is bad. In fact, it is all quite enjoyable in the moment. But it is not something I would go out of my way for again. Far less so when the tourist busses are around. It is a place you stop at because you are already there, because the windmill caught your eye, because someone offers you a sample and you say yes. Three stars, for doing what it does well enough, in a place where "well enough" is abundant. read more

This is tourist central, which is fine, but the crowds are bad. They have plenty of fun items for sale but somehow the vibe is totally joyless? I haven't experienced that at other tourist traps, it's kind of odd. I'd say this is worth checking out at least once if you're in the area, but unless you want cheesy stuff it's a pass. Also I didn't really see any shoofly pies for sale (I might have missed them though). read more

Such a cute gift shop and bakery in the heart of Amish town Lancaster. The bakery was stocked with sweets, homemade root beer and pretzels. A staff member greeted us with samples of their famous shoofly pie which was warmed and tasty. The cashier was friendly. They have something for all interests in the gift shop. Nic naks, clothing, Amish goods, furniture etc. read more

Stopped here when in the area for a mini weekend vacation with my daughter. They sell all kinds of souvenirs, cookies, pies and what they are popular for- shoofly pie which is a pie made of molasses. I got a blueberry pie and shoofly along with some whoopie pies to take home for my parents. Staff are friendly and helpful. Prices are decent for the fresh pies that are made there. read more

Nice place to visit to get a good slice of shoo fly pie. It's really good here. The service is friendly. They will give you samples of pie heated in the microwave with the whipped cream. It was excellent! Lois was great and really put a lot of whipped cream on the slice I bought. It's not so easy to find something to do on a Sunday in the area, so this is a great place. You can find souvenirs, cookies, lemonade, and homemade root beer. It's a fun place with a big windmill. Lois was really nice and gave me a booklet with information on what else is open on Sunday. I visited Dutch Haven expecting a more authentic "Dutch" experience, but it felt very generic and more like a themed imitation than anything genuine. The atmosphere didn't really deliver on the Dutch concept in any meaningful way. The pretzel was especially disappointing--dry, bland, and honestly not enjoyable. It felt like it had been sitting out too long. To make it worse, it came with plain yellow mustard, which just added to the overall lack of effort in presentation and flavor. For a place that leans into a Dutch identity, I expected something a bit more thoughtful and distinctive. Overall, it came across as underwhelming and not worth the stop if you're looking for something authentic or high quality. read more

My favorite bakery in Lancaster. The shoo fly pie is absolutely delicious. Upon arrival into the store they hand you a sample & ask if you want whipped cream. They sell it by the slice or as a regular pie. I also saw pumpkin & apple pie for sale. We had fresh warm homemade pretzels there that were delicious as well. Employees are extremely friendly & welcoming. read more

I was in Amish Country and decided to stop by this spot on my way to lunch, and I'm glad I did. While wandering around the shop, the elderly shopkeeper suddenly approached me with a small sample of shoo-fly pie, which was so nice of her. I was happy to get a chance to try it without having to buy a slice because I'm not much of a pie person. However, the pie tasted good, like a brown sugar sweet pie. I ordered an Amish root beer as I was curious about how it differed from commercially canned root beer. It lacked carbonation, had a stronger bark root taste, and wasn't too sweet. It's actually quite good. Overall, check out this place if you are in town. They have a lot of Amish souvenirs. read more

I will travel from New York to get a freshly made Dutch Haven Shoo-fly pie. And yes, I know they ship them. My wife and I are staying in Lancaster. There are certain things I want in Amish Country. Besides the homemade Jams and Jellies, I want some of their famous Shoo-Fly pie. Now when I write reviews, I get asked about the things I write about. Now if I'm writing about having a B.E.C. in a New York Bog-a-da, some ask what does that mean? I'll do better on explaining when I'm at a new region. A shoo-fly pie, think of a pecan pie without the nuts. A heavy use of molasses along with cinnamon and brown sugar is what elevates a shoo fly pie to rock star status. It's the heavy and warm ingredients which makes a shoo fly pie. And Dutch Haven Shoo Fly Pies makes a kick ass Shoo Pie in Lancaster Pennsylvania. (Can I say ass??) My wife had a small basket of jellies and a jar of chow chow. I'm waiting and looking at the pies and the gentleman behind the counter gives me a piece of pie? I ask for another fork and thank him for the hospitality. I pay for my purchase and grab a box of pie. We go outside and enjoy our slice of deliciousness. It's not only the crust but the brown sugar dusting on top of the pie makes for one tasty treat. Are you going to trust a delivery service to get you a slice of heaven? It's available. But for me? I love the ride to Lancaster just to get my shoo fly pie fix read more

Well we had to stop in after we saw this over the top windmill! The inside is very knick-knacky and they also sell fresh baked goods. I came to visit family in Lancaster and when asked for food requests I replied Shoo Fly Pie. I was taken to Dutch Haven as the best around and I tasted why. This was not the one I remembered as a kid in Central PA, although I think this was better. The filling is thick but still the right amount of runniness and the fine crumbs sprinkled on top were fantastic. The shop itself has some gift items like shirts, pins, Knick knacks, hex signs, etc. I picked up a couple plus some Whoopi Pies to try later. read more

If you've never tried Shoo-Fly Pie this is a good place to start. They offer the "wet bottom" type which is, in my opinion, better than the "dry bottom" version. The difference - a moister pie. Other pies we have tried at other establishments have been over the top sweet - they got theirs right ! Didn't really look around in the store but it has other bakery offerings as well as the usual tourist stuff. Worth a visit. read more

While in Lancaster my husband had to try this raved about "Shoo-Fly" pie. Upon entering we were greeted with a small slice of pie. You can't stand there and eat it, they make sure to tell you to walk away from the pie area to try out the sample. The shoo-Fly pie is very good. It has a strong taste of nutmeg and sorta like the flavors of a sweet potato pie. I honestly don't like pie but my husband does so we had to try it. Although they didn't seem Amish at all, they were somewhat pleasant but definitely more overpriced compared to other local shops. All in all it was okay, I felt a little sense of uneasiness but that was expected given others previous reviews. I purchased 2 pies and a few items and left. I wasn't hanging around long enough for attitude lol. Good Shoo-Fly pie I must say but I likely won't be coming back. read more

We stopped in and were told they were in the process of closing. So, their gift shop items were on sale. We found a few things to purhase and then decided to grab two pies to go. The pies were good. Better than the dark gummy versions you find at many locations. We took the pies home warm, gave one to my parents, and we all enjoyed them the next day and the next day and the next day. Not too sweet, just enough molasses flavor to the authentic, tasty pie crust, dusted topping, just the right consistency. We were told the day we were there was the last day but it appears they are still open. read more

What a cute spot with friendly service, a fun store, and a yummy shoo-fly pie. Also, the restaurant is so cute from the outside, with a big windmill. There's outdoor seating so you can enjoy your pie with some sunshine as well. I enjoyed the shoo-fly pie very much. I did not, however, love the root beer. It tasted very different from what I'm used to for root beer, which I understand might just be an Amish thing to make it this way and while it may be good to many, it just wasn't for me. I saw a few reviews about rude service, but I didn't have that experience at all. They were very nice and gave me a sample of the pie before buying any. I think this is definitely a fun stop. read more

The Shoo Fly pie was good and that's where it ends. The male and female shop keepers are two of the most unfriendly customer service, nay, PEOPLE I've ever met. The store sells authentic junk! I guess I should've known by the tourist trap visage. I was looking at the "authentic" Amish straw hats but saw the "Made in China" tag. What a joke. No indigenous or hand made goods. The apple pie is school cafeteria grade and the root beer gross. Not worth patronizing. read more

"Shoofly pie is a molasses pie or cake that developed its traditional form among the Pennsylvania Dutch in the 1880s, who ate it with strong black coffee for breakfast."―Wikipedia Shoo-fly pie is def an East Coast thing (mostly central PA), and not something a lot of West-siders are familiar with. I have been eating quite a bit of it on my recent visits to PA and I like it quite a bit―but it is important to note I do like the taste of molasses. Dutch Haven is the preeminent place to get some Shoo-fly in this part of the country, as they are located in a very touristy part of central PA along with a bunch of other Amish tourist-traps. However, despite the appearance of a tourist trap this place is anything but one! Immediately upon entering we were greeted with a small sample of their famous Shoo-fly pie by the friendly shop-keeps, and it was delicious. Which was good because that was exactly what we came for! Before purchasing said pie, we did admire their selection of gifty "antiques" and tchotchkes and were surprised at their very reasonable prices.Pie was a very reasonable $12/10" and we grabbed one and were on the way. Dutch Haven's Shoo-fly might be my favorite rendition of this Dutch classic, as the crumb was soft and not sandy as some can be, and I loved the good strong molasses flavor. It is odd that they don't put any extra molasses in the pie beyond what's in the brown sugar, but it didn't lack for flavor. Also, it is worth noting that based off the ingredient list for the standard Shoo-fly that theirs is VEGAN due to a lack of eggs and butter. This is also probably what makes their pies shelf-stable and capable of being shipped worldwide! Highly recommended when visiting Amish country to stop-into Dutch Haven for some pie, good prices and some friendly service on the side. read more

Very friendly staff, I just wasn't a huge fan of the shoo-fly pie. Neat little shop full of all kinds of souvenirs.

Shoo fly pie. This is why go here. Don't bother with notions and bad t-shirts. It's the pie they are all about and all about it they should be. There was someone esle in there with a stroller. We both didn't like the streto-typing inside. Love the shoo fly pie here, it is so delicious. It's perfect with a dollop of real whipped cream. Been coming here for years, and there is plenty of parking. 10/28/2023. They are OPEN with the original owners and the ORIGINAL SHOE FLY PIE. I personally visited today. They are trying to be more open hours but currently have limited staff. I have been a frequent visitor for 60+ years even when they were a restaurant back in the early 60's. You can stroll through the store and find a tourist souvenir, if you'd like. I am happy they are making a go of it. If the pie is not to your liking, no problem, all food is not for everyone just don't be a hater to the staff. read more

Dutch Haven Shoo-Fly Pie Bakery is two stores rolled into one. One being of souvenirs, oddly referenced by the Amish as being "tchotchkes," along with all sorts of jellies, honey, apple butters and varying preserves with the other being a bakery. The key item of the bakery is, of course, the Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch and locally famous shoo-fly pie. If you've never had shoo-fly, you should and this is the place to get yourself some of the best. Shoo-fly, a molasses based pie, comes in two versions, the "wet bottom" and the "dry bottom." The only differences are that the dry bottom is fully cooked with a cake like consistency while the wet bottom has a top of crumbs with the bottom somewhat without a true crust leaving it with a thick sticky gooey consistency. Both are good though I must confess I personally favor the wet bottom. The shop is well arranged, orderly, and spotlessly clean with a super friendly as well as informative help staff. So besides being the place to pick up your shoo-fly pie, it's also the place to ask about anything local or to get any information you may want about the Pennsylvania Dutch Country or the Amish. On the funny side, it's rather hilarious to see Dutch Haven with a Dutch windmill on top and everything about it indicating Dutch when Amish and the Pennsylvania Dutch are all actually German and really have nothing to do with the people of Netherlands. Seems the whole "Dutch" thing just got going as the rest of us either couldn't pronounce the word Duetsch (meaning German) or somehow mistook Duetsch for Dutch; but then I even note that my spellchecker is making the same mistake. LOL! read more
