Outstanding baked goods. Lucky enough for them to be sold at the Saturday Sale flea market nearby.

It is the sort of landmark that promises something memorable, or at least something sweet. Inside, the place leans heavily into its role as a stop-off for visitors. Shelves are filled with faux-Amish goods, hex signs, and a cheerful assortment of bric-a-brac, along with shirts that seem very proud of nearby towns with names that invite, shall we say a certain kind of humor. It feels less like a bakery and more like a general store that wandered into a theme. The people working there are genuinely kind, and generous with samples, which is always a wise and welcome strategy. We tried a bit of the shoo fly pie, and in the past we've tried some cookies, root beer, and ice cream. They were all perfectly fine. Pleasant, even. But they did not distinguish themselves from the many other places in Lancaster County offering the same treats with equal or better competence. Nothing here is bad. In fact, it is all quite enjoyable in the moment. But it is not something I would go out of my way for again. Far less so when the tourist busses are around. It is a place you stop at because you are already there, because the windmill caught your eye, because someone offers you a sample and you say yes. Three stars, for doing what it does well enough, in a place where "well enough" is abundant.

I haven't experienced that at other tourist traps, it's kind of odd. I'd say this is worth checking out at least once if you're in the area, but unless you want cheesy stuff it's a pass. Also I didn't really see any shoofly pies for sale (I might have missed them though).

I like tradition American pretzels better. The donuts were good- much better than a national donut chain. But, some of the groceries, particularly Giant and the Acme have vanilla cream donuts that would compare to these donuts. The vanilla frosted donut had a different cake flavor/consistency than most bakeries. I would recommend this donut to try. The pies did not come in individual slices- so I did not try the pie. My husband is a butter cookie fan at other bakery. He said they were too buttery. The bakery was clean, and the woman behind the counter was really quite helpful checking on an ingredient for us.

There was a lady working, and I am *assuming* it was her store. The young staff persons kept asking her questions about how to ring people up, etc., so it felt like it was her store. She and the younger staff were really kind! I purchased a cheesecake and some cookies. Everything was excellent! They also had some seasonal cookies like St. Patrick's Day, and a king cake for Mardi Gras. Everything was tasty, the staff was friendly, and the prices were decent! There was not a huge selection of goods, and this could have been because of the time of day I was there, but I'd like to go in and see the cases more filled. I'll definitely be back!

I have to say I was disappointed. We got a set of sticky buns with walnuts and a small cherry custard pie. I am sad to report that though they were very fresh, they were both pretty tasteless. I am a very good baker and I can make some killer cakes, so let me tell you this place makes the absolute best coconut cake I have had in my entire life! I mean, I can't even imagine a way for it to be improved. It is a coconut walnut cake. The regular coconut cake is good, too, and very very fresh-tasting and has a much clean taste that you don't even find with homemade, but the coconut walnut cake is outrageously wonderful! It's not just a plain yellow cake like their regular coconut cake. the batter is different and, as good as I typically am at tasting and guessing ingredients, I have NO idea what the difference is with the coconut walnut cake batter, but it is divine! Let me mention another key point--I hate frosting. Even on the best cakes, I scrape it off. I do make an exception for my mom's homemade frosting, but I'm just not a frosting person, even when it's from the finest high-end bakery out there. However, let me tell you, this is the perfect frosting! It is light, smooth, incredibly fresh, and creamy without being heavy. I actually love this frosting and I actually enjoy eating it. This place has got a wonderful thing going and I hope they're around for generations and generations. Talk about some food that makes your heart smile :). If you are anywhere near this place and can make time to swing by, do it and you will absolutely fall in love!! The only thing you have to lose is your diet :P. Guess you better run a couple extra miles before-hand, lol. NOTE: The place my dad tried their products was at the Amish market in Lowell, Maryland, which is open Thurs-Sat with very limited hours (closed by 3pm on one of those days, but it varies).
