Highly recommend going in at 1pm where there is a tour. If you go alone without a guide all you see is the buildings and just grass... Wish we knew ahead of time a bit more of this laidback type historic area where we met only one person in charge and she's already occupied with 2 other ppl explaining its history behind a desk.

I looked forward to the tour of the plantation but what I received was a very woke diatribe about "enslaved" people and "enslavers". History, like it or not is giving the facts and not trying to use words to be politically correct. The blacks here were "slaves", NOT enslaved people. The owners were "masters" and NOT enslavers. Let's keep the politics and liberal narrative out and just give the facts. Also, they only accept cards and no cash. Cash is legal tender everywhere....but not here. I was terribly disappointed with the whole experience and left early. I was looking for historical information but what was given was a liberal sappy "victim" story. We can't change history whether we agree with it or not. No one is saying slavery was good but it is still a part of our history and should be told accurately.... Skip this place and find a better plantation where they are interested in giving factual information. There was little about the running of the planation, life in antebellum NC etc...

It's just that YouTube and the like have made us more aware of it, and yes, it's getting worse. But anyway. My one and only experience with the Durham Police was a negative one. I got thrown out of a Harris Teeter just for using my computer in there, which I've done at a dozen other Harris Teeters (all of which right after shopping there, and totally legally). Some other people were not thrown out, and they were also hanging out and being loud in the same part of the store. It was quite surreal and bizarre and hardly ever happens to me. Naturally I gave the store and the security people a one-star. Then the cop they apparently called or alerted was in the parking lot watching me and looking me up on his computer and shining a light in my car window while I was looking up directions. I was one of 40 cars in the lot, but the only one that just got wrongly told to leave the store, and the only one with NY plates. I noticed that he was acting like he was going to follow me. Checked out my license plate and whatnot. I did absolutely nothing to warrant calling the police and I wanted to complain about the treatment they had afforded me, but he gave me seriously creepy vibe - like he was looking for a reason to bust me, and very bored - definitely not your friendly officer on the Block, so I just got the hell out of town, didn't notice him follow, and will be careful when coming back to Durham.

Don't expect Durham Police Department to help with cybercrimes. Wouldn't even call a bank in NY and…read morefollow up on a scam.

The place is pretty easy to find and parkinng was definitely not the worst. The Good: This is the first time in my life when I went to a courthouse and it was a fairly enjoyable experience. Its spacious on the inside, well kept, secure, and modern. The most unexpected thing there was that everyone was really friendly and helpful. Not one person there from the security to the parking garage attendant seemed disgruntled. I went there to have my fingerprints taken and I had made an appointment online. Not only was the lady at the window and the lady who did my prints very friendly, but I was actually seen on time! Unbelievable. Friendly staff AND timely service at a government facility? That's new to me. If you have a choice of courthouses in the area, I would recommend this one. Plus some nice local shops are close by if yo u have to wait for someone or something, you can grab a nice coffee or whatever. The Bad: You have yo pay for parking. $2 for the first hour and $1 for every additional hour up to $10 max.

In May of 2023 I received a letter from DMV stating that my insurance with Nationwide had been terminated and I had to have Nationwide send an FS-1 form to NCDMV or pay a 50 $ fine. I called DMV in Raleigh and was told that the previous owner of my car had been terminated from Nationwide and DMV was going by my VIN # and that was the mix up. She instructed me to have Safeco send an FS-1 form to NCDMV and it would be straightened out soon , just I need to follow up. My former insurance sent the form 7 times and I followed up with 10 phone calls and 4 personal visits to DMV on 55 hwy in Durham (My plate was revoked on 6/12/23 ) I was treated horribly at NC 55 DMV and I was told every time that either the dates were wrong on the firm or they hadn't received it. I finally got frustrated and called the Governor's office which gave me no sympathy whatsoever until I threatened to take this problem to the media . The Gov's office gave me the NC Liability Insurance commissioner's # I called it and it was the wrong #. I found him on social media and called him. He sent me a text asking me to pls email him all the facts and information I had and he could forward the email bc he was on vacation. I did email him along with a photo of my tag and my duplicate ins card from my former policy. The email got forwarded to research for liability insurance fir NC. Ms Wanda was very nice and immediately figured out the problem. She followed up with a. Email and a phone call stating that it was obvious the letter should have gone to the former owner of my vehicle . Ms Wanda questioned why this was not brought to her desk by the subordinates at DMV when I presented them my information. Thank you Ms Wanda you are the best,
