"Two James Hunters--one most noteworthy as a Regulator and the other a legislator--were prominent in North Carolina during the late colonial and Revolutionary periods." "James Hunter, the Regulator, was born around 1735, probably in Pennsylvania... Active in local affairs and displaying some degree of education, Hunter was at the forefront of the Regulator movement in the backcountry. He is believed to have helped write the "advertisements" and petitions, and was entrusted to deliver some of them. While he did not consider himself a military leader and is even said to have refused to assume command at the Battle of Alamance in 1771, Hunter later became known as "the General of the Regulators." "James Hunter, like many of the Regulators, sided with the King during the early days of the Revolution. He went to Cross Creek to join other Loyalists in February 1776, and then proceeded to New Hanover County. Hunter was captured at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge and paroled a few months later. Champion of good roads. Her intensive lobbying led to 1921 law creating modern state highway system. Born 8 mi. N." As is customary with North Carolina's markers, there is more information online that I summarize. Ms. Berry attended the Nash-Kollock School in Hillsborough and the State Normal and Industrial School (presently UNC-Greensboro). Following graduation in 1897, she taught for two years at the Oxford Orphanage. In 1901 Miss Berry began work in Chapel Hill with the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey, led by Joseph Hyde Pratt. She rose from stenographer to secretary for the Survey to its acting head in 1917 when Pratt entered military service. During those years Miss Berry became active with the Good Roads Association and in 1919 led that organization in lobbying for legislation to create a state highway commission. In 1921 the General Assembly created a strong highway commission, thus setting the foundation for the modern highway system. The News and Observer called her "the best woman politician in the state." Going a different direction than a statue or a bas-relief memorial, the eight monument pillars are smooth, gradually increasing in height pointing toward the middle slab topped by an eagle. All branches of the military are represented. Around the perimeter are bench-like markers donated by or in remembrance of a specific conflict, person, or event. The names of veterans from the area are etched on the slabs on both sides, but don't appear to be in alphabetical order. I guess that it makes it easier to add names to the wall. Any veteran is allowed to have his or her name added. What is unusual is the series of letters following each name, listing the conflict in which he or she served. Most are easy to figure out, but there is a separate display with the abbreviations if needed. On the day I visited, it was raining pretty hard, so I almost didn't stop. The irony of having an issue with standing out in the rain at a memorial honoring those who experienced far worse than a drenching, was enough to make me deal with it. I'm glad I did. It's a nice place.
