We made an appointment and only had to wait a short amount of time to get called. The lady who helped us was kind and thorough.

Parking is a bit of a pain but, once you find a spot (if you get desperate, just use a parking deck) and enter, take a number, and have a seat in the clean, modern seating area till your number is called. Bring a book and keep in mind that, if you come during your lunch break, you will most likely spend your entire break here, so plan accordingly. The folks who work in the water management office are nice enough, but they only kind of want to help you. In fairness, if there were a lobbyful of disgruntled customers there to argue about their bills, I might be reluctant to help them, too. My recent three visits were about attempting to bypass the $50 setup fee for our switch from a billing company to city water after our move from an apartment complex to a townhome. The water management office needs a really specific letter from your billing company to do this. It must be on letterhead and state that you have paid all of your bills on time, including the dates the service started and ended, and that you have paid your last bill. This was a challenge for me to procure, because I had been paying my bills to Vertex, a billing company, not an actual service provider, and they do not provide letters. Vertex sent me a detailed list of all the bills I've paid (on time) since we began working with them in 2004, but this was not sufficient for the City of Durham. Vertex doesn't, however, provide letters on letterhead because, again, they are just a billing company. I then got a letter, on letterhead, from the property manager at my apartment complex, but all they were willing to say was that I paid my last bill. That letter, even combined with my billing statement from the last six years, was not sufficient documentation to get out of the setup fee. That, in my opinion, is pretty lame. The City needs to have in place provisions for people like myself, who have been working with a third-party billing company for water services. All that said, it is really convenient to have auto billing---although they advise against it, so you can review your bill to make sure you don't have any leaks, etc.---so bring a voided check with you to set that up. You can also pay online if you prefer that. Bills are bimonthly, however, which is why I prefer autopay, because I'm afraid I'll forget.

I live in Massachusetts and visited a friend in Charlotte a few weeks ago. He'd wanted to visit…read moreStagville Plantation for a tour, so we took the drive. The woman who guided the tour was wonderful. I wish I knew her name - if she gave it, I didn't hear it. She started off by telling us that she would talk a little bit about the property and the buildings, but would focus mostly on the slaves who were held there, and what their daily lives were like. At no point did she seem like she had memorized a script. She spoke intelligently and knowledgeably, and really gave us a feel for what Stagville's enslaved people endured. She welcomed questions, and was very clear about what she knew, what she didn't know, and what she surmised. There were 2 people on the tour who, if I had been the guide, I would have wanted to slap. However, our guide handled their questions with tact... Our guide spoke about children being born into slavery on the plantation, and she said that the moment a baby drew their first breath, they were a slave. She said they were put to work at age 7, working from sunrise to sundown. Then she asked any children aged 7 or older to raise their hands, which they did. The guide said, "You would have been put to work at the age of 7," and one boy, around age 8 or 9, replied, "But I'm not black." (Yes, I wanted to slap him.) The guide replied, "No you're not. But I'm telling you about this so you can use your imagination to see what life might have been like." The second person I wanted to slap was a woman, probably in her 40s or 50s, who asked, "Were the slaves treated well?" (Do you see why I wanted to slap her? Does she not understand what slavery was?) The guide replied that she should be able to tell from the information being given on the tour, but that we would get back to that question later. Near the end of the tour, the guide asked the woman, 'What was your question again?" and the woman replied, again, "Were the slaves treated well?" The guide asked other people taking the tour for their opinions, and everyone was pretty clear with their responses. The guide handled it like a champ. All in all, this was a very informative, well planned tour about a horrible time in our history. I would highly recommend it.

Highly recommend going in at 1pm where there is a tour. If you go alone without a guide all you see is the buildings and just grass... I…read morehad to especially jump through some hoops when I wanted to research some journals in their Rare Books archived collection. I was a grad student at a different university -- so using the library required some form-filling. You have to lock your backpack away in a separate room and can only take pencil (no pens!), paper, and a laptop with you into the study room. My journals were old and stiff, so they gave me special paperweights (they don't look so 'special' -- more like felt blocks) to weigh them down with. Luckily, my materials weren't so old that I had to be supervised while reading them or use 'special' tweezers to turn the pages. If you take a moment to soak up the room, you can't help but be awed (I'm an admitted book geek, but still...). The room itself is beautiful, but there's also something thrilling about being in the presence of so many rare and ancient tomes locked away in cages. There are also underground archives, and the contents of these unseen rooms hearken a scene from The Historian (or, for you movie-going types, National Treasure). Of course, Wilson has other rooms that are less intimidating! Check out the NC writers section, which is set up like a museum.
