Dunton is magical, simply magical! It's a restored ghost town with a saloon and 14 fantastic cabins. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of them. A river meanders nearby as well as an easy walk to an incredible waterfall on property. Eric is the heart of this place (he cares for it as his own and is so detail oriented)(Emily is new and petty fantastic too). Special shout out to Holly (she made us feel so so welcome), Kelly. Alice, and John were fantastic as well. But all the staff are fantastic! This year especially. We've been several times and this was by far our favorite staff experience. Soaking under the stars in the hot springs is incredible as are the communal dinners. The road to get here can be a bit bumpy but once you arrive you quickly see it was all very well worth it. We did not spend the night at Dunton Hot Springs. Our rental Jeep died right in front of the resort. I cannot say enough about how kind and helpful the staff were in helping us get cell service and internet and a comfortable place to wait the hours it took to get a tow truck and taxi service from the rental company. They researched ways to fix our car and provided information to help us find a way to get to Durango. They went FAR, FAR out of their way to help two people who weren't even staying with them. I can only imagine how they take care of their guests. The property is rich in natural beauty, and we hope to be able to actually stay here one day. We know we'll be in the kindest and most considerate of hands when we do. read more

Come for the hot springs. Stay for the all inclusive food and drinks. This place is pretty secluded. The last 10 miles drive will be on rocky road, but it's not that bad. No cell service within an hour of the property. The staff are sooo welcoming and helpful! Service is one of the best. The all inclusive food and drinks is worth the price of the room! Three meals a day is an experience of its own. We planned our daily activities according to meal time. Love that they have daily group activities. We participated in snowshoeing and it was so much fun. They have all the winter gears for guests to borrow so, don't worry if you didn't pack it all. We stayed in the Echo room, which is the smallest and cheapest. The bed is sooo comfy that we just stayed in bed majority of the time so the size of the room didn't matter. In the winter, Echo room guest uses the steam shower located in the bathhouse to shower. All three hot springs were amazing. We pacifically chose this property for their hot springs and it did not disappoint. The library was well kept, cozy, and organized. -Wi-Fi is spotty. Works here and there, and disconnect. - If you want lunch packed Togo on your last day, gotta tell them I'm advance like at check in. - Laundry service is complimentary, but they ask for 24hr turnover. The Good: I loved the road leading to the resort...cows were walking along side of us! We had to be careful around the curves to make sure there was not a cow in the road! They were so adorable. We stopped to talk to them. They were quite curious. The food was truly exceptional. The sauces and vinaigrette's...multi-dimensional flavors that were outstanding. The serving portions were just right. No complaints. One night we had a private dinner in the tipi. It was lit with both candles and string lights. So charming. Horseback ride with Vicki was really great. We signed up for a 1-hr ride but it was closer to 1-1/2 hrs. She is a pro and delightful. I had a massage and Shantel was fabulous. Robert (bartender, sommelier, raconteur) is a doll! The Not So Good: Our cabin, New House, was both spacious and cozy. However, we were greeted by more than a dozen flies. My husband spent the first 30 minutes or more trying to get rid of them. For the price charged for the room one would think that they would have ensured everything was perfect. Nope. One of the reasons I selected this cabin is because the website said it had "TV & DVD". Not the case! There is a monitor upstairs...you cannot watch either TV or Netflix, etc. You can only borrow a DVD from them to use with the monitor. Their website is misleading and should be corrected. Service, in general, was good ... not great. We think perhaps this was due to many newbie staff...several told us they had only been at the property for a month or two. Just simply wasn't up to par with properties that have a similar rate package. When you are paying an average of over $2,000 per night, I think more is expected. And we have certainly gotten much more at other places...Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur to name just one. The atmosphere / setting was good, not great. We left feeling that it was an interesting couple of days but not one that we would be rushing to repeat. read more

We travelled here with 12 total guests for a surprise 70th birthday party for my husband based on the many 5 star reviews and their website videos and what a surprise we had! We were to stay in the Potter House Cabin. From our moment of arrival our experience was incredibly disappointing. Every request we made was given a "no". From a simple iced tea, to requesting an alternate choice of food to a request for a birthday cake..no was the answer...the chef was "too busy'. We were then shown to our cabin and had to walk a long distance. Mind you, my guests included a 76 year old with Parkinson's and 70 year old recovering from knee surgery and a newly pregnant daughter-in-law. No golf cart or transportation was offered. The cabin was old, musty, no air conditioning, no bottled water in the fridge, no ice, no sodas, no phone service...nothing! And a long walk in the dark to get back to the main lodge. and for this we were paying over $10,000 per night! I was expecting charming and rustic but not rusty, moldy and bug ridden. When my pregnant daughter-in-law went to lay down she found under her bed covers, a black widow spider and another type of spider with a nest in the bed. We knew we couldn't sleep in this place and decided to leave immediately. We were charged over $11,000 for basically nothing but a bad lunch and a nightmare. The scenery is remarkable, and clearly very photogenic, but when you look beneath the covers...this place is NOT as presented, not worth the money and NOT worthy of the Relais and Chateaux brand. read more

Did a day trip "lunch and soak" here and it was great. There are 3 hot springs: one in a bath house, one more natural pool, and the source is down a ladder. The bath house is a dream, the staff is extremely friendly, and the family style lunch is delicious. The property is stunning - the scenery, the cabins, the waterfall, the history, the dog (Eva) - everything. Felt so relaxed after soaking, wandering around, and using the Aesop products! Would only note that the drive is up a rocky dirt road - make sure you're in a car that can handle it. read more

I stayed here last fall. The truth is there is really no reason to review this place. It is so good in every way and I couldn't possibly find a way to say something bad. Everyone else (that I can see) has also given it a five, but let me try to be more specific. Management/service: impeccable. Anything/everything you could want brought to you without pretension in such a way that you feel at home. The staff was all very young and capable and willing to do any role at any time. I got advice on hikes, help with luggage, middle of the night cocktails, 8am black coffee, help with the ping pong table, and a ride to the river camp all from the same guy. They were interchangeable and really made you feel welcome. Food: Remarkable. Every meal was fantastic. I was with a wedding party where we had two sit down meals a day, and breakfast was not scheduled but come as you please. My favorite was actually the lunches - served family style - one of the meals was a salad with duck that I'll certainly remember. Drinks: they had excellent bartenders serving great classic drinks. Big self-serve bowls of punch/cucumber water etc were out at all times. The facilities - all unique. I was so jealous because we were basically not in a room because of the constraints of the wedding party and ended up in the attic with no bathroom! But I can't complain with everything else and considering I didn't see a bill. The other rooms were just fantastic decor. The grounds: set on a river in the mountains, at about 9,000 feet. Waterfall to sleep to - I didn't need my white noise app on my phone. Different hikes in every direction. Horseback rides. The hot springs were amazing and at several different temperatures to match your taste. I of course tried them all including the cold bath. Never very crowded, just a few people per pool at most or it was your own private place. They did a great job with the wedding. The place, while remote, was well connected with fast wifi wherever you needed it. I went for a hike on my last morning after everyone left from the wedding party with my wife to the Navajo Lake. Definitely a challenging/tiring hike but so worth it. Amazing views the whole way up with alternating meadows and forests with changing flora along the way. The lake in early September was cold at 11,000 feet but I had to take a plunge anyway. Only things I can say as considering are probably 1) I don't know what the bill so I assume it has to be brutally pricy. That said, I'd consider going back for a week renting a cabin with my two little girls (they didn't make this trip) at any cost. 2) I did a guided horseback ride. While fun, with my limited time there I wish I had saved the money and just done another hike of some kind. I've lived on the east coast and done some trail walking but never a climb like the one to Navajo Lake and now I have the bug. read more

This is a whole new world. Never, never, never have I experienced something like this. I would like to preface by saying that if you EVER have the chance to get to Dunton, then please, get there by any means possible. This is a small "town" just about 60 minutes from Telluride or Durango (with a nice windy road either way!) and the journey is well worth the reward waiting for you in Dunton. There are beautiful mountains, calm streams and above all the most quiet and serene surroundings that I have ever been in. I was able to stay for two glorious nights as part of a friends' wedding this past June and trust me, I owe them big time for being invited to this wedding- party of the year! Dunton features on property gourmet chefs, wonderful service 24/7, more hot springs that you possibly know what to do with, luxuriously decorated log cabins (with all the modern conveniences of course), full bar, campfires, games, a full library, yoga studio, bike trails, waterfalls, adorable marmots everywhere you look and about a ba-zillion other wonderful things that were far beyond my personal means or brain capacity to comprehend! Our group had rented the entire town for the weekend and let me tell you I have never felt more at home when away from home ever. Seriously, ever. I could get into a lot more detail, and perhaps I will someday, but as a "tip of the ice burg" I will end by just saying that this place is not to be missed. read more

We came to Dunton for our 15th wedding anniversary. We wanted a place to relax and yet be active at the same time. Dunton is the place. The food is amazing. And the desserts are out of this world. No repeats, everything made fresh. We did a half day fly fishing excursion with Brian. It was our first experience and a lot of fun. We also took the fat tire bikes out for a ride and a hike. The scenery is amazing and trails are everywhere. My husband had a wrap and massage with Ann which he reported to be fantastic. John and Patrick made us feel right at home-offering drinks, blankets around the campfire and just keeping the mood jolly. We used the bathhouse every night before bed. The outdoor pool under the stars is the best way to end the day. And we ended up showering in there as well. The price tag is a big one but worth it. There are a few things that have not been worth the price which is the reason for the 4 stars. There is a massive fly problem. My room had at least 15-20 everyday. It is hard to take a nap with buzzing around your head. We stayed in echo cabin and I loved the idea of an outdoor shower, but the shower space seems to house the neighborhood snake population. Every time I open the back door I see 4 or 5 snakes so I have not been able to use the shower. One morning we were awakened by a blaring radio at 6.30 am. The staff was getting ready for breakfast and forgot the outdoor speakers were on. Andrew approached me with an apology but it was more like an excuse with reasons for why it was not his fault. I also requested a yoga class upon arrival on Friday. I never heard back so I kept asking. In the end I asked 4 people, everyone said they would arrange it but in the end when I checked back in I was told there was no yoga. Dunton was a great vacation. Perfect for our anniversary. I am not sure I would come back but definitely a place worth trying. read more

Holy joy. Best vacation. We stayed 5 days which started to feel absurbly indulgent. The service is what makes this place the best in the country. Any thing you want at any time at all. That should be their motto. Your wine glass will always be full. They're like ninjas. Be prepared to eat. A lot. Lunch and dinner are 3 spectacular courses each. But don't worry. Between the altitude, 8700 ft, the hiking, and biking you'll work up an appetite. Props to our amazing servers: Daniel and Chad. Extremely clever renovation of an historic mining town on the banks of the Dolores River. Peaceful authentic ambiance. All inclusive price-- all meals are here. Heaven for foodies-- just had the most delicious 4 course lunch of my life-- spinach salad, roasted beats, halibut, fluffy raspberry moose. Food is not only delicious but also incredibly healthy. Soaking in the hot springs was a blast. We loved playing with the employees' friendly dogs. Next time I will request a yoga class on the platform overlooking the river. I will also request a llama hike. I heard from other guests that Dunton is amazing in winter. It's expensive but the uniqueness and the overall quality justifies the price. read more

Was here for a friends wedding and loved every minute. Beautiful place getting there in the winter can be tricky when it's snowing but worth it. Lot's of stories of people getting stuck on the way. Including the fireworks show people! Most companies hired for this wedding were late as they did not allow enough travel time in the snow.
