I recently picked up a small Lemon cake and a Strawberry cake from Morning My Day in Silver Spring…read more I was expecting a decent dessert; I wasn't expecting to be reminded that most other bakeries have been lying to us for years. The first bite was a bit of a shock to the system. It's one of those rare "Ratatouille moments" where a flavor profile manages to bridge the gap between Maryland and the legendary sponge cakes of Phoenix Bakery in LA. It's a bit of a trick, really--making something taste like a childhood memory without being cloying about it. The Breakdown: * The Sponge: It's exceptionally light. Biting into it is less like eating a dense dessert and more like biting into a sweetened, high-end pillow. It's airy, delicate, and possesses the kind of structural integrity that only a professional (or a wizard) could manage. * The Icing: A triumph of restraint. Instead of the usual sugary plaster one finds elsewhere, this is a light, white cream. It's sweet enough to let you know it's there, but it doesn't try to dominate the conversation. It's icing with a bit of dignity. * The Verdict: This is how cake ought to be. It's exquisite, technically brilliant, and far too easy to eat in a single sitting. If you appreciate a dessert that relies on craft rather than a massive dose of corn syrup, do yourself a favor and stop by. It's a legit bit of baking excellence right here in Silver Spring

There are only two tables inside. Both were taken, but fortunately for me the two guys at the one table were leaving as I was placing my order. The two young ladies at the other table were very loud and animated when they were speaking to each other, so that was a bit annoying. Then six or seven people came in to order and he got pretty crowded in that small space. I loved my purple yam pasty. It was soft and fresh. I just wonder why my taro milk tea wasn't purple like the other one posted here. It was just OK; the tapioca bubbles were all clunked together. I had to get a straw to separate them. I will definitely return for takeout or maybe stay if nobody else is there and it's quiet

I stopped in after happy hour nearby. I've been meaning to check this place out for such a long…read moretime. I wanted a pastry for breakfast the next day. They were pretty much sold out of pastries, but had muffins, so why not. I got two. A morning glory, and cinnamon bun (not sure if this was their actual names; I couldn't read the place card. The morning glory muffin was phenomenal. It was so moist. I was actually full after eating it. The following day I ate the cinnamon one which was OK I know by now. It was a day old, but it didn't have as much flavor as the first one and the walnuts were sort of sunken to the bottom of the muffin. It still tasty, but I recommend the first one which I've included a photograph of. Come in after 4:00, and it's Buy One, Get One Free!

I'll at least give one star because it's a very cute coffee shop but I'll probably never go here…read moreagain. I ordered an iced coffee drink and a double espresso for me and my friend. When I saw that the cashier rung me up for an espresso con panna I asked her if that was just a double espresso or something else (knowing full well it was something else). She then asked me if I wanted one or two double espressos and I just said one, and she said that's what the espresso con panna is and still charged me for it. In my mind I'm thinking maybe they just ring it up as same thing. As soon as I paid, the cashier turned to the guy making drinks and asked what espresso con panna meant and he said it meant with the cream but they were out of cream. The woman just walked off and neither of them acknowledged that I had been charged more money for the wrong thing. So I basically got charged more money for the thing I was trying to order. I realize it wasn't a big difference in the cost but just put a bad taste in my mouth.

When we arrived, there were a few spaces available in their small parking lot, so we had no trouble parking. The shop is charming. They sell a few select beers and wines so it was fun to peruse them as we waited on line to order. Their menu is on boards behind the counter and they also have paper menus, which is helpful to those of us who need glasses! The staff was super friendly and helpful since I hadn't been there before. A+ to them for offering their coffee/espresso drinks in decaf! I had a vanilla latte and it had a deep, rich flavor. One of the best I've had in the area. For food, my friend had the bagel and lox and it was huge! She had to take half home. I had the garlic Boursin eggs. It was a nice pile of delicately cooked eggs, but I wished there was more garlic Boursin flavor. Still really good. It came with salad greens in a light vinaigrette, sauteed mushrooms, and avocado. Very nice dish. They have a serve-yourself water station and, though they bring out your order to your table, you must go get your cutlery and napkins. They have a nice number of tables for a small place and we were lucky to snag one. Overall, a really nice experience and I plan to go back with my husband next time.

I also had the Green Machine smoothie, which surprised me with little bits of crystallized ginger, each one delivering a lovely pop of flavor. We sat outside at the picnic tables on a beautiful spring morning, and even though I rarely emerge for breakfast, I can't deny that it was worth the early excursion.
