Stopped by here well on my Sunday walk and I ordered an egg and cheese on an everything bagel it was bad the bagel was a little bit more chewy than I like but unless it was bad. It's not the best I've had but definitely not the worst. There's no indoor seating but there's outdoor with umbrellas which was great for a nice morning like today. As far as service it's pretty much walk up and order and wait for your order to be called no frills and simple. When I think of quintessential New Jersey bagel spot -- this is it. "Hole in the wall" (check), has been around for years (check), where the locals go (check) and has REALLY. GOOD. homemade, fresh bagels (check). What more could you want? I often call ahead to place my order -- especially on a weekend morning, at peak busy. My go to: bacon, egg and cheese on a jalapeño cheddar bagel -- SPK (salt, pepper, ketchup). The space inside is super tiny inside, but everyone working there works hard to get people in and out quickly -- plus the teeny-tiny inside adds to the cozy, nostalgic, small business feel. Several tables with chairs and umbrellas to sit and enjoy when the weather is nice. DB also has lots of other delicious deli/lunch items (haven't tried many yet bc I'm always craving my regular order) and some sweeter breakfast treats. We've lived in this town for 24 years and have been getting bagels here for at least that long! lol Are they out of this world crazy good? No. Is the service the best ever? No. Are they conveniently located with easy parking? Hell no! But....their bagels "get the job done". They are good - no doubt. Certainly better than the chain down the road with chewy under-cooked cardboard facsimiles. And better even than whatever ever imported cardboard the chain on the highway with the big green star has. I got a dozen bagels from here. They were not good. The cinnamon raisin bagel was so lacking in flavor that it was inedible. It was a weird sensation eating something I couldn't taste. I wondered if it was me, but then I drank something and was able to taste that just fine. Then I tried a sesame bagel. It also lacked flavor (but wasn't as bad as the cinnamon raisin). Maybe they need more salt? More cinnamon? Bake a little longer? I don't know. These are small, mostly pale, flavorless bagels, closer to the bag of Lender's bagels you can buy from the grocery store than they are to something you would get from a Bagel Shop. If you like Lender's bagels, they are cheaper at the grocery store. If you want a proper bagel, there are much better bagel shops around. read more

Just moved to Dunellen and needed to find a bagel place and this is it! They are very friendly and the ladies that answer the phones/take orders are very nice. You can just tell it's a good local place. I've had a few orders where I've asked some special requests/modifications to things and they get it right every time. read more

The young lady didn't know how to make a destroy sandwich she cut the end of the roast beef .and put the cheese she wanted on the sandwiched to unwrap my sandwich to ask for mayo and gave her the yellow cheese back didn't give me the Swiss cheese.i will stick to just the bagel and cream cheese. read more

You walk in and you definitely get the neighborhood feel. As I look at the menu and bagels, people come in from time to time to get their "usual" favorites from everything bagel with cream cheese to pork roll egg and cheese on the bagel of your choice. First impressions; the pork roll, egg and cheese was pretty good. I went with pumpernickel and them bread did have that fresh texture, the scrambled egg was also cooked well. WARNING: This establishment is has a problem with people of color! My boyfriend and I, and my mother, on separate occasions have gone to this bagel shop called Dunellen Bagel and had the same experience. The moment we walked into the door it was like we were walking in invisible as if we were unwelcomed. I've gone to this place in my youth and I was really hoping the tense air we were feeling was not what I believed it to be. But as we walked up to the register we were greeted with nothing as the woman at the register didn't even look us in the face since we walked in. We waited five minutes. All the people who were working in this shop and not one of them wanted to take our order. In fact they all were making sure we knew that we were not welcomed. My boyfriend spoke up asking them, "Hey can someone take our order?" Absolute silence. We received our answer. I've never met more disgusting & hateful people in my life! The shop was very rundown and uncared for much like their customer service. We left and my opinion of that shop changed drastically that day. Then my mother called me this morning about her experience. She waited 5 minutes for the same people to stare at her as she walked in ready to place her order. This time there were other customers in the shop with her so she waited until someone was available to help her. She told me as she stood there she noticed that all of the people working were deliberately ignoring her at the register. She even had to speak up to them and upon asking can I place my order a staff member just looked at her and asked is there anyone here for pickup. The staff member walked past her to make coffee returned to the register put on her gloves and went back to the grill never acknowledging her. My mom called me today to say "you were right and I'm sorry we experienced this when you did but we won't be going back." If you want to be treated less than a person, then this is the place for you! If you want to see grotesque behavior of individuals who handle your food, even if it falls on the floor, then this is the place for you! I don't know where they believe we are, but this is NEW JERSEY. If they can't respect the people that live here, then they shouldn't get the honor of being supported! If you are a person of color and want to be treated with good customer service this is not the place for you. I went to Dunellen Bagel a while ago and they refused to take my order. I was waiting for 5 minutes and there was no one else in line and they didn't seem busy either, matter of fact the staff recognized me but instead of saying hello or saying they will be with me in a moment they proceeded to ignore me until I had enough and decided to leave. They also had a lady as the cashier that was around that did nothing to help as well also just to clarify they were not overwhelmed in any way. I never felt so disrespected at a restaurant before and for that reason I will never go back to spend a dime on their establishment and anyone that has had this experience before I will tell you to spread the word. Food is good there but the customer service there with most of the young "ladies" there makes it NOT worth it. Along with rude service the atmosphere isn't welcoming at all. If I'm not waiting 10-15 minutes for a order I already placed 10 minutes ago I ALWAYS get looks from other customers as if they're confused on to why am I there. For instance my pregnant fiancé was just there and a older man bumped into her belly not excusing himself to pay for his order. Basically he put his back onto her stomach without saying a word. Not good, sorry. Walked into the place and was not acknowledged for five minutes even through the guy in front of me had already placed his order. Called in a Taylor ham egg and cheese spk on an everything bagel. Bagel was undercooked and had way too much seasoning. Also the sandwich was not split (never have I seen this before in NJ). Can't seem to figure out why people like this place so much. I guess it's because they make their own bagels, but I've had much better in-house bagels before. The sandwiches are overpriced for what you get. I ordered a pork roll, egg, and cheese on a bagel. I got the equivalent of one medium egg and one slice of pork roll on a mediocre bagel for $5, and they didn't even put my salt, pepper, and ketchup on it. The line was insane, so I'm sure one more bad review isn't going to affect their sales. But I would not recommend this place to anyone who wants an authentic New Jersey breakfast sandwich. Dunellen bagel is exactly what you need weekend mornings! It is cheap, delicious, and run by local people - love it! I am obsessed with the everything bagel, with egg, cheese, and pork roll! Its bagels people, NJ knows how to do them and this place is no exception. Do not be surprised if you see people waiting outside, but that has more to do with the small space inside! This is a hole-in-the-wall CASH-ONLY bagel shop - EXCELLENT breakfast sandwiches and service, but standing room only and can get really crowded on nice mornings and weekends (we're talking lines out the door). They make the bagels in an oven that's within view of the counter and cook the breakfast sandwiches to order. Seems like most of the employees are high school girls which might mean you'd expect lousy service, but they are really efficient; quick and accurate workers. We used to live in the area and went here about 5 years ago and it was an average bagel shop, not necessarily the most glamorous, but it was convenient and Ok enough. We stopped in today to get the kids bagels and ordered 3 plain bagels, 2 with butter and one with cream cheese. The butter wasn't smeared on, there were a few chunks of butter so half the bites was simply a dry, plain bagel and other bites was a butter sandwich. The bagels weren't cut in half again and no napkins in the bag. The staff was nice but young, lacks quality control and oversight. I've been coming to Dunellen Bagel since I was a kid and always make sure to stop in when I'm back home visiting. They're bagels are delicious and you can never go wrong with one of their sandwiches. I'm not a huge coffee drinker so I'm not sure what they're coffee is like. The service is always good, the guys who own it are really nice. So unhappy! I grew up eating Dunellen bagel and it's always been one of my favorites, but I went there today and there was a bunch of teenagers working which is fine but they seemed busy and distracted by one another. I ordered a BLT on a bagel with mayo and a bacon egg and cheese. When I got home the bacon on my BLT was burnt to a crisp, and just crumbles of bacon. At this point it didn't even taste like bacon it was so burnt, and there was no mayo on the bagel either. I understand they were busy and that's completely fine, but that was just unacceptable! I will say tho that when ever I go in there and the two brothers (who are adults) are working everything comes out perfect! Its a nice bagel. No the top of the line but a very pleasant and suitable bagel. The coffee is William Law and its excellent but weak. It gets crowded and there can be a line. Everything is fresh and good. There are numerous bagel shops around the area. Bagels 4 you in Warren is a bit better and has a greater variety of quality stuff. read more

They are very unsanitary, most of them dont use gloves when handling the food . i seriously wouldn't recommend it . And as for the one person working i seen wearing gloves , that person did not change them after cracking a raw egg. Continued using the same ones to handel the bagel . They were also handling money and then touching the food which is also very unsanitary. read more

I just opened the bag of breakfast that my fiance brought home....its sunday work 6 days a week 45 hrs, hr commute each way, so sunday bagel is a very important enhancement to that 1 day off a week i get. Ordered - egg on bagel with butter, 2nd item, bagel cream cheese with also butter. Guess what. Dry egg on dry bagel, no butter on 2nd order either. By the time i opened the bag and saw basically food comparable to dunkin donuts i was so disgusted with the stupidity of these stoner counter employees i took matters into my own hands. I buttered the bagel with egg, rewrapped it, and put it in my toaster oven...because they also forgot to toast it. Sorry guys, but your competition, bagel bazar is just as careless.
