I was craving your basic Chinese American style takeout, but felt disappointed by the options when we have so many better restaurants in the Hillcrest area... like Dumplings N More. We got the scallion pancake, pork and chive dumplings, lamb and chive dumplings, Dan Dan noodles, and golden dumplings for dessert. Everything was really good! I remembered being a little disappointed with the soup dumplings last time so I am really glad I changed up my order. I just love their Dan Dan noodles. It's definitely my go to dish from here. The flavor is perfect and they make great leftovers too. I love that they package the noodles separately when you order it for take out so it's fresh when you assemble it at home. Both dumplings we tried were really good. The reason I went from four to five stars when updating my review. Omg the LAMB ones are some of the best I've had in San Diego. Easily. Unfortunately the pork were a little less flavorful, but I think that's just because the lamb outshined them and I would have liked the pork ones more if I had eaten them first. The lamb were just too good, definitely the star of the dumplings I've tried from here. They both had a good bit of juice in them too, not all dried out like other restaurants dumplings I've had. Really good stuff! Scallion pancake, can't go wrong. They have a good one here. Cooked well. No complaints. The golden dumplings with condensed milk reminded me of a bag of "Chinese donuts" that I've gotten from Americanized Chinese restaurants in the past. Really good, best when eaten hot and fresh. The condensed milk was new and very appreciated. I liked them a lot. Kind of reminded me of beignets so I kind of want to add some powdered sugar next time I get them for take out. Came here for an early dinner with a friend, and I was happy we did. Our waitress was really sweet- everyone was.. The service here is really great. The ambiance is.. well, nothing fancy, but comfortable. Basic, but clean. We had a booth, so it was comfy. Highly recommend the green tea matcha with boba, half sweet. The beef with broccoli was yummy- I like that they didn't overcook the broccoli. Could've been a bit more beef though. We loved the shrimp and pork dumplings. This review is for the takeout experience. Ordering online was very easy and the food was ready within 20 minutes. Parking around the restaurant however is hard but if you go with a buddy, then you can pick up your food. We got a whole spread of options, including dumplings, smashed cucumber salad, garlic green beans, beef noodle soup, and beef chow mein. The smashed cucumber salad and garlic green beans were huge portions and very flavorful. I could eat multiple plates of those - they really knocked it out of the park with their veggies. We also got the pork and chive dumplings (steamed) and the chicken and corn dumplings (boiled). I think I prefer the steamed dumplings over boiled, but it's nice that they provide different way to enjoy your dumplings: steamed, boiled or pan fried. The only dish that didn't quite hit the mark for me was the beef noodle soup. The noodles and beef weren't exactly what I was expecting compared to an another beef noodle soup place with braised beef & tendons. Instead, it was thin slices of beef. The shu mai were very good too and loved the cucumber salad. 10/10 would recommend this place for a cute little date night. We're always in this area but we rarely just walk around and after a little cafe date with my Fiancé, we were looking for a place to eat and this came up near by. It was a Monday evening so parking wasn't as hard to find and we parked about a block down. If you do come on a weekend and have trouble finding parking you can always park at the lot where the old RiteAid is, you just have to pay a little more. This restaurant has been here for a while but it was our first time dining in and we were pleasantly surprised. There's nothing super fancy about the place but I kind of like that because I never quite paired dumplings and fine dining together. When I think of dumplings I think of a warm cozy meal in comfortable clothes, so I like that this place doesn't require you to be all dressed up. It's very casual but clean. The service is great, they're very kind here and attentive. We ordered the Mapo tofu, Dandan noodles, Pork Xia Long Bao which is the soup dumplings, and Spicy wontons. The Mapo tofu was steaming hot and full of flavor, the tingling and numbing sensation from the Szechuan peppers is my favorite because it lets me eat more spicy food haha. The Dandan noodles were really savory and had a rich peanut butter taste but they didn't over do it. The Pork Xia Long Bao's were great, they had a good amount of soup in them and there was a slight sweetness to it which I wasn't used to but didn't mind. Yum, every bite was exquisite, best were the pan fried pork ones, the rainbow dumplings were very good, 5 different kinds and colors! (See pic). Dumplings N More a Chinese restaurant in Hillcrest located on Fifth Street only offers indoor seating and parking is a challenge but I suggest the pay to park at the lot where now closed RiteAid is. Fifth Street in Hillcrest has lots of eateries, many I simply have avoided because of the Lack of Curve appeal. There's a bus stop outside, the sidewalk needs to be power washed and the area in general tends to attract homeless and/or trouble makers. A few weeks ago, after visiting a the Blue Stocking bookstore, I stopped and peeked inside Dumplings N More restaurant and saw available seating next to the window. I stepped inside and was immersed greeted by the female hostess and she let me choose my seating, the booth by the window with my pup Fendi. This restaurant has been at this location for over a decade. Despite its longevity, the restaurant is not fancy but the interior looked clean, simple with a hospitable staff. Service from the hostess/waitress and server was pleasant, helpful and attentive. She was knowledgeable about the menu items and contents of the dishes. Because this restaurant specializes in dumplings, that's what I ordered along with other foods. I specifically requested 'No Pork' in any dumplings and this restaurant was very accommodating and honored my request. The multi colored dumplings were presented nicely and were very tasty. The steamed shrimp dumplings aka 'Har Gow' are always one of my favorites and these were delish. The garlic green beans were good but not as snappy as I would have liked. The Emerald Tofu soup with tofu and slivers of Napa cabbage was light, flavorful and a perfect starter. Took a group here after the college kids moved in the dorms so the families can get to know each other. It was great for a group because you can scan the menu and put in your order and then easily pay per family. The staff were super nice and accommodating the group. Came here on a rainy day, because the other restaurant we wanted to go to was closed for the holidays. We chose this as the backup restaurant since we are traveling and have a toddler with us. XLB and dumplings is always a hit with kids. We had hopes and were excited to give this place a try. However, once the food came, the disappointment only built from there. Our first dish, Mongolian beef, was extremely salty. My wife ended up, washing the meat in her hot water cup to remove some of the salt in order to feed it to our child. Second dish XLB, and the soup and meat in the dumpling was also, you guessed it, extremely salty. My kid who usually eats 8 to 10 of these only ended up eating one and a half pieces. Finally the veggie, stir fried broccoli, i'll let you tell me how it came out (hint: also extremely salty, to no surprise) We ended up eating about 1/4 of all the food we ordered before throwing in the towel. I have walked by here a million times and always wanted to try it, I'm glad I finally did! I came on Christmas day and it looks like a lot of other people had the same idea in mind as it was busy. That being said the staff was so incredibly friendly and were doing their best to keep up with all the orders while checking up on me which I really appreciated. I've had a few unfortunate experiences where I've been sitting somewhere for ages with no idea what's going on so despite how busy it was they were handling it as best as possible. And the food sure was worth it! The salt and pepper wings were crunchy and flavorful. I also really liked the custard buns. I'm not big on coconut so I was a little hesitant but it was a very subtle flavor that went really well with the warm custard inside. I actually washed off the sauce. The wontons themselves had an odd texture to them but the flavor was OK. Soup dumplings - the skin was a bit thick but OK flavor. She ignored our table when we tried to get her attention. We also waited a long time for an extra dish that never came, and when I asked to cancel it because it was getting late, her attitude was very rude. What was uncomfortable was noticing that she was very friendly and attentive to a nearby white table while being dismissive toward us. As Asians who have lived in the U.S. for many years, we unfortunately recognize that kind of treatment. In the U.S,tipping reflects service,if you make customers feel welcome, we're happy to tip. Today I had their $13.99 lunch special and it was excellent! It was the lunch special board outside while I was walking dogs that made me think I haven't had Chinese food in a long time. Be careful of their front door because it is super heavy and it closed on the back of my healing hurt me and I remember that from the last time I went as well they really need to get that fixed before somebody gets really badly injured. I got the walnut shrimp with fried rice you have a choice of fried or steamed and then you can choose soup or veggies chose the veggies but I thought it was going to be veggie soup so I was a little bit confused when I looked in my container and it was broccoli I'm like oh I love broccoli so that was fine. I basically she pointed out that there was a spicy sour soup and then the veggie and I thought it was veggie soup so that was my bad. So I never write a review that fast unless I'm really impressed and that was the tastiest broccoli I've ever freaking had and it just looked like steamed broccoli! It had a sauce on it and it was so good I ate all my broccoli first. In fact it was so good my dog who hates veggies ate some broccoli. The walnut shrimp was really good and crunchy as well. The fried rice was typical fried rice nothing special but Lee was more impressed with the place the second time around with the lunch. We had a very frustrating experience here. When we arrived, we asked for paper menus instead of scanning, and the menus we were given had different prices than what we were ultimately charged, which was already concerning. Service was extremely poor. It took a long time for anyone to take our order because the staff seemed much more focused on to-go orders than the tables in the restaurant. After we finally got our food, no one checked on our table even once. When we wanted to order more egg rolls, we literally had to yell "excuse me" across the room to get someone's attention. We also made it clear from the beginning that we were two separate groups eating together, but when it came time to pay they refused to split the check according to what each group ordered. Instead they said they could only split the bill in half, which makes no sense. I ended up putting the bill on my card so my friend could send me their portion. While I was paying, I was prompted on the screen to add a tip, so I selected one even though the service had already been pretty bad. Only after looking at the receipt did we realize they had already added an automatic gratuity to the bill for a party of 8, even though there were only 7 people total (including two toddlers under 3 who only shared appetizers). This was never mentioned to us at any point. When we brought it up, the staff acted confused and went to talk among themselves. The server then asked which gratuity I wanted refunded, and I said both. After another discussion in the back, they came back and handed me cash for only one of the gratuities, but the additional tip I had been prompted to add was never refunded. Between the incorrect party size, undisclosed automatic gratuity, double tipping prompt, inability to split checks properly, outdated menu prices, and lack of service, the entire experience felt very misleading and poorly managed. Parking in Hillcrest is at a premium, and I had to park in the Rite Aid lot at $6 an hour, a rip off. The entrance and interior is nondescript. We grabbed a booth. On the tables are QR codes to scan and look at the menu, as well as order. My son ordered for us, two orders of 9 dumplings of different proteins, including shrimp, beef, and lamb. We also had a seaweed salad, which wasn't bad. I'm not a dumpling guy, but they were tasty. The people were cordial and professional, but we really didn't interact with them much. Because I'm not into this kind of food, I wouldn't come back, except if my son wanted to return the next time I'm in town. After a quick yelp search we found ourselves at the door step of Dumplings N More. We had a VERY picky child who had declared he would eat nothing before we walked in. Much to his surprise he loved the crispy chicken and chicken fried rice. We ordered chicken noodles, hot and sour soup, rainbow dumplings, and soup dumplings. The chewy fresh dough, the well seasoned filling and then, the heat of the sauce, so delicious. I tried Dumpings N More last night with my husband and baby, the whole experience was amazing. I drove by this place so many times but I always thought it was an American Chinese food place, because it was not at convoy and their name highlights dumplings. But I was totally wrong, their dumplings, wonton and XiaoLongBao probably are the most authentic and delicious in San Diego! I am very honest to say that, and they are ten times better than Din Tai Fung. Also they look amazing as well, I had the colorful dumplings with various flavors, each one is fully stuffed, the skin is thin but hold the stuffer very nicely. The colors of the dumplings are made from real food, all hand made, healthy and tasty. Xiao Long Bao totally passed my expectations, the juice inside is made of real pork jelly, so it's not only juicy but also has that kind of sticky and flavorful taste, it is amazing. The chicken wings make my husband so satisfied, it's very crunchy outside and juicy and tender inside, it is also very flavorful, my husband said it was even better than his fav chicken wings spot Bonchon. The spicy wonton is great as well, the sauce they used makes me think of Malatang's sauce, I can literally dip everything in it, it is made from both sesame and peanut butter, that's why it is very flavorful and delicious. The dessert buns are cute and yummy as well, the lava stuffer tastes so satisfying and they look very nice when you opened it. We also had a cumin lamb, but we are too full to eat a lot of that, I just had a bite, the cumin flavor is strong and there are tons of lamb inside, with the price you paid, it is very worthy. I have to come back here, this restaurant becomes top 3 Chinese restaurant in my opinion. I want to try their giant steamed bun and Tan Tan noodles the next time. Two words! Ice Slush, yes it's almost a 6 dollar drink but it's damn worth it! I recommend the pineapple strawberry flavor. It's got great refreshing and slightly sweet, very enjoyable! We ordered chicken fried rice which was cool. Spicy wontons were NOT good! I've had so many spicy wontons at different places. This spot does not make them spicy + it's in a thick paste instead of in its traditional broth. Very strange taste, again different than any other place we've had. Definitely not going back.
