We visited Dumpling King on 2/17 to celebrate the Lunar New Year and were honestly just grateful they were open. The place was absolutely slammed. The energy felt festive, but be warned: it was very cold inside despite the packed dining room. A few staff members were even wearing parkas, so definitely bring a jacket if you're dining in during the winter. I went with three friends who took the lead on ordering. They give you a laminated menu, and you use a dry-erase pen to make your selections. Overall, the food was fine. We shared BBQ pork bao and several varieties of dumplings, which hit the spot for a celebratory meal. The cucumber salad turned out unexpectedly sweet, but we repurposed the sauce as a dip for our dumplings, which actually worked surprisingly well. The standout for me was the *Wor Wonton Soup*: comforting, flavorful, and exactly what you want on a chilly night. The biggest downside was the pacing. There were long gaps between dishes, and our final three dumpling plates arrived at the same time as the check. With so many "dumpling"-named spots across San Francisco (thanks to that viral article making the rounds), expectations are high. And while this Clement Street location is convenient and lively, I wouldn't call it the best dumpling destination in the city. Still, for a festive night out during Lunar New Year, it got the job done.
Decent Chinese food with no frills. Service is always friendly and quick and there's typically a seat available even during the busy weekends. Menu is extensive and you just mark the items you want and hand the menu back to the wait staff. My favorite item of the night was the zhajiang mian. The noodles tasted as if they were freshly pulled and the noodles had the perfect bite. The sauce was flavorful and perfectly balanced with the freshness of the cucumbers. I personally felt the custard bun and sesame swirl bao tasted like frozen baos. The flavors were kind of bland. My fiancee and his mom really liked the hot and sour soup. My true rating for this restaurant is 3.6/5
My friend and I stopped by for an early dinner because she heard about this place. We had both never been here. It wasn't too busy. Garlic string beans (2/5): These weren't my favorite. Usually I love a stir-fried garlic string bean but these weren't blistered enough for my liking. Could've been cooked longer. Juicy pan fried bao (3/5): This was 6 pieces of pan-fried buns filled with kurobuta pork. The dough seemed very thick. The meat was flavorful though. Chive & pork dumplings (4/5): A standard boiled dumpling. I enjoyed it. ChongQing Style Noodles (1/5): I don't think I've ever had these noodles before. I wasn't expecting it to be served in such a thick gravy? There was so much of it, a bit overwhelming. I thought it would be a bit more of a noodle with a light sauce or broth. Flavor was okay. Wasn't much spice. Everything felt mushy. Overall, not my favorite. I've been to other dumpling restaurants that I enjoyed more. Service was fine.
What an amazing experience in New Chinatown on Clement! Unique dim sum and bao--a must see and try. You mark your selections with an erasable marker on the extensive menu--fun! We ordered: - Crab roe and pork dumplings - Goldfish dumplings of shrimp and chives - Chicken, kale, and corn dumplings - Juicy pan-fried Korobuta pork bao - Sesame balls - Roasted rice tea All for $60 with tax before tip. Very reasonable. We visited on Super Bowl Sunday and the restaurant was playing the Olympics on their big screen TV, which didn't distract from the lovely "moving" waterfall murals and beautiful decor. The service was appropriately attentive, warm, welcoming, and friendly. We were served promptly.
Cute, vibrant dumpling spot with a fun atmosphere, and their XLB is a must-order. We also tried the pan-fried dumplings, which were just as delicious. You know a dumpling place is legit when you can watch them making everything fresh through the window. The chili oil pork dumplings were good, but probably something I'd skip next time in favor of trying more of their other offerings. I can't wait to come back and explore their kitchen menu because everything coming out looked amazing. For the quality, portions, and overall experience, I think it's definitely worth the price.
We visited Dumpling King for some dinner and the service here was fast once we walked in we receded. The ambience in here is very spacious with lots of seating. We ordered five dishes and left with some leftovers my favorite dish from this place was the salt and pepper fish fillets and my least favorite was the cucumber salad. Overall, I would visit them again.
We went here for a quick date after my husband and I visited his grandma. I was craving for dumplings and the other place I wanted to go to is closed. We came across this place and we had great food! We were seated right away as it was not busy. We ordered potstickers, bbq baos, sesame balls, custard baos, pork and shrimp dumplings, Shanghai(?) soup dumplings and ordered garlic noodles and sesame chicken to go. Everything was tasty and warm and cozy! I loooved their custard baos! It was my first time trying it and it was like eating a cloud! Plus, they have the cuuutest panda design! It was definitely heavenly! I also loved the sesame balls. Very light and crunchy that we ended up ordering one more order to go. The place has a good vibe. There is a monitor with water falls streaming down that calms the eyes. They also serve hot tea on the house! No need to order for additional charge! Will definitely come back!
Stopped by with my bestie while we were walking around the area looking for something to eat. We decided to give this place a try. We ordered the Shanghai soup dumplings, Garlic Pea Sprouts, Braised Eggplant (no spicy), and Cumin Lamb (no spicy). The Braised Eggplant was our favorite. It came with wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, yellow and red onions, and green onions. The flavor was really good, sweet, slightly sour, and savory all at the same time. The Cumin Lamb was very tender with a light cumin flavor that didn't overpower the lamb. The Garlic Pea Sprouts were fresh and had a nice wok hei. The Shanghai soup dumplings were our least favorite. Even though they were labeled as soup dumplings, there were only a few drops of soup inside, and the pork filling didn't taste very fresh, so I wouldn't recommend that dish. Customer service was great. One small issue was that our plates kept spinning on the table while we were eating, which was a bit annoying. Overall, we had a good experience and I'd come back to try other dishes.
A true hidden gem on Clement! This modern, cozy dumpling spot serves absolutely outstanding food. The menu has a great variety, including plenty of delicious vegetarian options. Their vegetarian xiao long bao is hands-down the best I've ever had--hot, soupy, flavorful, and made completely in-house. Do not leave without trying the dry-fried chicken wings. They're incredibly tender, perfectly crispy, and the sweet-spicy flavor is addictive. The owner is warm, welcoming, and clearly cares about the food and the experience. Everything we tried was fantastic. Highly recommend--come hungry and try a bit of everything. You won't be disappointed!
Came in for lunch on a Sunday and pretty happy with the food here! The garlic noodles were delicious, especially when paired with the chili oil. They were buttery and very garlicky! General Tso's chicken was to die for... sweet and spicy, juicy tender chicken and a good portion size. We also ordered the vegetable soup dumplings and kung pao chicken dumplings, but these dishes were just okay. Both were quite bland and the kung pao had way too much oil. Service was quick and attentive. They had a pretty large menu which was cool too!
I've ordered takeout/delivery from here and the food was delicious, so we decided to visit them in person for a casual dinner. Lots of seating for all group sizes. The staff is quick and efficient. We didn't wait long at all before food showed up on the table. The menu is huge, and they definitely serve more than just dumplings. We enjoyed all of the dumplings we ordered: xlb, steamed pork and chive, and fried pork baos. Be careful, the fried pork ones are really hot and juicy! We took our first bites and the juice popped everywhere lol. Soup portion was huge to share and enjoy multiple bowls of. I thought the hot and sour was a teeny bit too thick for my liking, but my boyfriend enjoyed the consistency. Really nice people, great food, quick, and also in a good location on Clement. There is definitely a lot of good food to choose from on Clement, but definitely give this place a try. read more
Took a rare trip to San Francisco to hit a few businesses. I hit the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory first and then headed out to the avenues to Clement Restaurant to pick up some pastries, Ariscault Bakery, Dim Sum restaurant and grabbed lunch in the avenues at Dumpling King. I went with a friend and his wife. We ate family style and ordered Beef with string beans, chicken with asparagus, chicken chow fun and the restaurant was nice enough to make us a combination fried rice (not on the menu). The beef and chicken were tasty, good flavor and cooked just right fresh vegetables. I liked the fried rice flavor but wasn't used to lettuce in my fried rice which made it more moist than typical. I didn't try the chow fun but my friend and his wife enjoyed it. The service was attentive and the restaurant was willing make dishes not on the menu. If I'm out in the avenues again I will drop in again and try some other dishes too. For very good food, value and service drop in with friends, family or have a solo meal. read more

Come here! And I cannot emphasize this enough. COME HERE! One of my best friends and I came here this morning for dim sum and we are having the best time! The vegetarian options on their menu are astounding. Impossible dumpling! Vegetarian soup, dumplings! Also, apparently they make noodles in the house! Next time. The atmosphere is amazing. None of those Formica tables and plastic chairs. It's beautiful and welcoming. The service is prompt and friendly. And we will absolutely be back here. read more

We tried Dumpling King as it is one of the restaurants open later on Clement St, and were not disappointed. We were with my nieces, who can be quite picky and difficult to please. We ordered the salmon avocado fried rice, shanghai soup dumpling, kimchi & pork soup dumpling, shrimp & scallop dumpling, pan fried chicken pot sticker, and zhajiang mian. We all really loved the dumplings. My nieces especially loved the shanghai soup dumpling, but my partner and I preferred the kimchi & pork soup dumpling since it was slightly spicy. We also loved the shrimp & scallop dumpling, and wished we got another order since it only came with three dumplings. The pan fried chicken pot stickers were also very good, with the filling having a nice meaty and chivey flavor. I thought the zhajiang mian was pretty tasty, although my partner (half Korean) said the flavor was a bit different from a traditional zhajiang mian. The salmon avocado fried rice was the least memorable. It wasn't bad, but we probably would another something else next time. I'd do a 4.5 if I could! The place is light and bright, if a little clinical. The service was good and so was the food. It's slightly on the pricier end of casual SF dining, but not too bad. You make your choices with a marker on their extensive menu sheets. Goldfish Dumpling (Shrimp and Chive): Tender and delicious. I really like the filling on these ones. Dried Fried Chicken Wings: It's hard to top San Tung, but these are great. Big, meaty, and extremely crunchy batter. The sauce is really sticky and gooey. A bit of a splurge for 8 at $19, but good stuff. Beef Chow Fun: Solid classic! No complaints. Cumin Lamb: This was really good. Tender meat and a whole lot of onions. read more

My second time coming here post farmers market and can confirm this place is delicious! The garlic noodles and general tso chicken were AMAZING and star of the spread. We loved the buttery noodles and saucy chicken. The flavors were 10/10. Special call out for the chili oil -- loveeeeeed it. My dumpling options were a little limited due to dietary restrictions, so tried out the veggie soup dumplings and kung pao chicken dumplings. Neither were all that impressive or memorable and definitely expected a lot more given the restaurant name. Overall, great spot on Clement to enjoy a nice sit down meal. Dumplings aren't usually my thing, but I was with The Wife, and she thought it would be good. Glad I went along. There are plenty of pescatarian options, and we ordered a few. We got the vegetarian bao, vegetarian pot stickers, scallion pancakes, and scallion oil noodles. The Wife ordered the noodles, and she had to give them to me because of the spice level. No problem. I liked everything very much, and ate until I was stuffed. The bao were an interesting shade of green, and I can't really describe the flavor, which was different than anything I've had. The pancakes were like naan. Service was fast, and the total was $44.54 before tip. Quite reasonable, considering all the leftovers, enough for another meal. read more
Not too busy on a weekday night, walked in at 7pm with plenty of open tables. We ordered *pork and chives steamed dumplings *pork xiaolongbao *pea sprouts - very fresh *salt and pepper fish fillets - not as heavy of a flavor as I expected but good nonetheless It was definitely too much food for 2 people but our eyes were bigger than our stomach haha. I explored clement st with my family today, and came across dumpling king. There was no wait, but still a good amount of people! Inside looked very clean. I had trouble with one of their bathroom lights. As for the food, we ordered quite a few dishes. I really did enjoy each dish. The Sichuan spicy fried chicken is delicious, but It could be a bit more spicy! I liked the scallion pancakes because it wasn't oily! Sometimes when you order this at some places, it can be really oily. The xiao long baos and chilli wontons were 10/10! No complaints. My least favorite was the piggy red bean buns. It just tasted odd to me, and I'm usually a big fan of red bean paste! Overall, I had a great experience here! I would definitely come again if I'm in the area. read more
Dumpling King replaced a slew of restaurants that previously occupied this space. Pretty good XLBs and dim sum. Surprisingly for us as we previously tried another restaurant at this same spot serving similar items and that one wasn't as good. Our favorites on recent visit are the XLBs, the Siu Mai, shrimp and chives dumplings. Service is also good. Give them a try next time you are shopping around here. Walked by Dumpling King while we were visiting Green Apple Books. The photos in the windows looked very appetizing and after a quick check on Yelp, we decided to eat lunch here. From the outside, it looked like it might be a hole-in-the-wall, but we were pleasantly surprised to see that it was very clean inside. The menu was two different laminated pages. We started off with the cucumber salad, which came in a cute dish, and were good. Their Shanghai soup dumplings were perfect - with a thicker wrapper, which I prefer. Chow mein was decent. The pan fried chicken potstickers had kale and corn inside, which I was not expecting - while the presentation was lovely, I should have ordered the pan fried pork buns (the photo of which caught my eye). I had heard that dumplings were all the rage in SF and was not up to a long wait at a famous dumpling restaurant. Dumpling King had exactly what we wanted, without the wait! read more

It was a freezing night so choose not to venture to far from home and landed here with luck . Super busy probably because of beginning of the new lunar year of the horse . Waited not too long and the workers maybe owners had it down to clearing tables and seating guests quickly. So starving ordered the 4 dumpling with a kale w/chicken and corn , shrimp and scallop , goldfish and shrimp . The mu shu vegetable which came with some thin pancakes and a deliciously thick plum sauce. Peking ribs really saucy and nice and a good portion for take home plus a chicken soup with lamb pieces. Very clean with nice touch of decoration. Service is very tentative and fast. A big plus when you have to worry about parking at a meter. Easy menu so you know exactly what you are getting. Sao long bao - 8/10 tased good, mushy fillings rather than juice popping. Pot sticker - 7/10 fillings have more vege than meat made it kinda mushy and skin was not hardened or crunchy. Pan fried buns - 8/10 juice popping and meat was tasty. Skin was a tiny bit too thick and caused dryness Noodles - 9/10 good portion, soup is good but took over by overwhelming white pepper, still not bad. read more

Came here today to have lunch with my kids since we have to wait for our car to be done with Toyota. The foods wasn't bad at all but when I asked for a small box to go and the check I didn't expect there was going to be a surprise in the box. I shaked the container and I noticed a little black thing fell out onto my pants. I looked down just to see there was a small roach so I grabbed a napkin to kill it and called the waitress so she can see it. All she said was sorry and walked away. It's a young roach so there's gotta be more in the back. Really disappointed to see that. Will definitely reported it to the health department. read more

Stopped by one night to check out this 'new' dumpling spot, food was alright until the soup dumplings arrived. Staff was friendly and nice but service was slow and careless. Tables and chairs are not kept clean enough in between. Sat on two dirty tables, table stayed dirty the whole meal even when it was already mentioned. The crab xlb had none to minimal crab flavor. The dumpling's skin is too thick and the meat's quality overall was not fresh with an off-putting taste. The hot and sour soup dumpling was good, great flavor and consistency. The dried-fried beans had great flavor but the quality of the beans were old, grainy & tough. Scallion pancake and the fried buns were decent. read more

Clean decor and seemingly nice enough staff but the food was only ok. Ordered the ha gow, shu mai, soup dumplings, wontons in chili oil and beef chow fun. Everything but the wontons were lacking in flavor. It was just too subtle of a flavor. More salt was needed and I'm Chinese. I don't like things too salty so that's saying a lot. The beef chow fun had a lot of bean sprouts but not enough noodles. The beef was also pretty flavorless. The wontons were the best because they had the most flavor but it was pretty mild. Soup dumplings had thick skin and minimal amount of soup. Although I did see them making them in the back so at least it's made in house. Finally, they charge 3% for credit cards. Didn't see that until we got the bill. Don't love that. read more

Tasty food, nice decor and ambiance, friendly service, extensive menu. This may be the new go-to Chinese place for my family. I placed an order with the person at the register and ordered five all non-meat items to go (or so I thought) one onion pancake to eat there to test out as a benchmarker (not for me-I prefer a more egg crispy, less corn starchy pancake), I took his recommendation of the black sesame which was good as it was cute. It was all good. How a pork bao ended up on my order is unbeknownst to me. I'm not a 100% vegetarian but I don't eat most meats in the US so I was grossed out to realize I had ingested something foreign to my stomach and did not have a pleasant time digesting my meal. Thankfully I only had one bun out of the six and the manager agreed to refund the item over the phone "as a one time courtesy" lol I certainly hope that doesn't happen again! I would've definitely caught the mistake had the order been repeated back like most places do. I should've known when my card didn't go through the first time. A decent choice with good food, but nothing special to me. Maybe that's my fault for going to a place called Dumpling King and not getting dumplings but a lot of the dishes tasted like things I could either get somewhere else, or get a better version of somewhere else. My favourite was the cumin lamb, which is a dish I always enjoy. But I found it had too little lamb and was a little too salty. The garlic noodles had great texture, but was too light on the garlic. The taro puffs were unfortunately, just bland. With that said, the service was fantastic and the restaurant was clean. But in a city filled with countless Dumpling X restaurants, this starts to blend into the crowd for me. read more
