I dig the vibe here. They have a DJ every night that starts at 10PM. This past Saturday, they had a DJ that did a great job of feeling the crowd. The energy is always good. The theme is very much hipster but they are friendly people. The dim lighting adds to the ambiance. The sandwich station is a plus. They use Boar's Head deli meat. $6 for a regular. $9 for large. We tried the Italian and it was good, if I was more intoxicated it would have probably blown my mind. Drinks-wise, you can get drunk for cheap or you can opt for a craft cocktail. They are equipped for both. Happy Hour: Monday thru Friday noon till 8pm. All draft beers $3, all well drinks $4. They also have $6 beer and shot, all the time! 1. "Patriot": mug o' Coors banquet w/ shot of Four Roses bourbon 2. "Federale": can o' Tecate w/ shot of Sauza Silver tequila Bartenders are friendly. Despite them usually having a good crowd, I've never had to wait more than a few minutes to get someone's attention over the bar. Nuvo Burrito has been replaced! The owners of Duke's made some renovations to the place which I think were really smart. The bar is along the back wall and curves up to the steps to the entrance on Clearview. The top floor next to the entrance is where the deli sits. I suppose I am explaining this backwards, but c'est la vie! They slice Boar's Head meat right onto your sandwich. As a huge fan of the traditional deli, I respect Duke's model. I got a half-sammie, I probably should have done a whole, but you live and learn. Plus, I like that they offer half-sammies. Sometimes I'm not that hungry! The bar has a good beer selection and a great liqueur selection. It was bumping (music and a crowd) on the Saturday night that we stopped in. We also went around 4pm on a Wednesday and it was pleasant. There were a few people in there, but it was by no means packed. We were able to relax and have a conversation as the music was pretty low. FYI - seating is sparse. It's not really their fault, it's the space. They have seats at the bar, but otherwise it's standing room only. On the deli side they have a few tables, but not a ton. I guess Duke's finds a way to marry deli sandwiches and a speakeasy bar. It's kind of odd if you think about it, but it works. I gave Duke's three stars because it's new and I'm weird about sandwiches. I don't like eating them for dinner. It's a lunch item!! So while it's not totally my jam, it is A-OK! read more

This unassuming bar has amazing sandwiches (and beer). We arrived at Duke's late in the evening after our flight to Nashville and was amazed to discover that this bar could serve really delicious panini-style sandwiches. I ordered the 2:17 special (yum) and immediately regretted getting just the regular size because my sandwich was so tasty. We hadn't eaten anything since breakfast so ended up ordering another round of sandwiches (and beer), which left us feeling content after a long flight. Most kind, welcoming and friendly ownership has been a staple in the community for half a decade now, consistently participating and supporting local events and charities all while keeping their staff as employed as possible in the pandemic. This weekend I was happy to see them enforcing all health and safety measures and therefore protecting the same community they've been a staple in for years. After eating dinner in East Nashville, we were looking for a place to grab a drink or two. We found Duke's on Yelp and decided to give it a try. It's a small bar next to Marche. There is a small parking lot and by some luck there was one spot left when we arrived. It was a Saturday night around 9 so of course it was pretty busy. It's a pretty small bar. But I liked the vibe of the place. Simple in a great kind of way. Super hipster crowd (not saying this in a negative way, just the best way to describe the crowd). I think most of the men had longer hair than I did. At least none were in a bun. The bar menu is nothing fancy but I usually just drink beer so it was perfect. $5 for a draft beer?! Yeah, I'm down with that. And it was good beer. After grabbing our drinks, we went to the back area where the sandwich place is. We again were lucky to find the last 2 seats in the whole place. While we didn't eat, the sandwiches looked great. Nice idea to have food available all night. Liked the music choice. Quiet enough that we could still have a conversation. I wish this bar was closer to where I lived. I would be coming here a lot more. It's a fun go-to bar with a nice comfy vibe. I'll have to go back to try the sandwiches! read more

I used to like this bar and come often, but I'm absolutely never coming back. Like many people on here have noted, the staff (especially the sandwich staff) treats you like you're a horrible person for even being there. I waited 45 minutes for my sandwich and when they brought it out it was wrong. I mentioned what was wrong and the almighty sandwich slinger looked at me like I was a jerk. Got there at 2 am, we were told they were too busy to make sandwiches and wouldn't take our order. Not the best option for late night eats.

I'm giving them 1 star, not because of the food, but because of the way I felt when I walked into this establishment. The sandwiches that I ordered were good but the vibe was very awkward. This was in July and I haven't been back since. It was a little late on a weekday, maybe around 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m. I was hungry and wanted something good that wasn't considered "fast food". As soon as I walked in I went to the bar, not knowing that they didn't take food orders there. The brunette bartender saw me standing there for about 5 minutes but continued to talk to a man and didn't acknowledge me until there was a break in their conversation. Even then I had to get her attention and she wasn't even friendly. -__- I asked her could I make a food order and she said "Oh, you have to go to the back." So at this point I'm hoping that this doesn't set the tone for the rest of my time here. Boy was I wrong. So I start making my way to the back and all I could think about was how uncomfortable I was feeling. I usually don't feel out of place anywhere but it was the total opposite here. People were staring at me like I had two heads. I was the only person of color in the establishment and even though I'm fine with that, I couldn't help but feel like everyone else in the place wasn't. So I get to the food area and the man that was making the orders didn't greet me with not even half of the enthusiasm as every other person. I was watching very closely and making sure that I was not overreacting about the situation and unsurprisingly, I wasn't. I paid, got my food after about 15 minutes and darted out of there. Sorry Duke's your sandwiches were good, but not enough for me to return after that extremely uncomfortable experience. read more

I really wish I could give this place a good review. I've been here 4 times and it's been the same situation every time. The sandwiches are good and the ambiance is cool. But, the bartenders on the other hand are less than desirable; completely rude and slow as hell. They seemed to be more interested in chatting with their friends and look at you like you're putting them out if you want a cocktail. As a long time bartender, I give a lot of slack because sometimes places can be high volume or very busy. This is NOT one of those places; no excuse. I've given this place multiple chances because I live in the neighborhood, but every time I go here, the bartenders are so rude. Last night I asked if they had White Claw (I know, how basic of me) and the bartender laughed in my face and walked away without taking my order. She was so incredibly rude. Bartenders were extremely rude from the start. My two friends and I had terrible experiences and were treated poorly on three separate occasions. I got the vibe that if you are not a regular then they have absolutely no respect for you or the business you are giving them. Pro tip: don't try and order two drinks at once for you and a friend, the female bartender won't give it to you (?). As a Nashville native turned New Yorker who has been to thousands of bars around a much bigger city, I have never experienced such a poor or more unwelcoming, incompetent bar staff, especially at a hole in the wall dive bar that has nothing necessarily exceptional to write home about. read more

Over the past few months, Duke's has become one of our go to places in five points. However, just six months or so ago, I did not know it existed. My husband & I were just looking for a parking spot one night and ended up parking right in front of Duke's. We saw people going in. We both looked at each other and said, "What is that place & how did we not know it existed?" I have lived in east Nashville for years and been to Marche 1,000 times (which is right next door, basically sharing a building). Anyways, while I may be late to learning about the awesomeness of Duke's, I am on board now. It is affordable, with good cocktails and a nice beer selection. The deli sandwiches are delicious and for only $6, you really can't beat it. I love the Italian, but have tried 3 or 4 and really enjoyed them all. The bartenders have always been super cool and friendly. This is coming from a girl who doesn't drink beer and often feels intimidated going into what I perceive as a dive bar where I kind of assume they don't have anything to offer me. Yes, I am high maintenance and like a good cocktail or glass of wine or nothing at all. (Don't worry, my husband constantly reminds me how much cooler and cheaper I would be if I would just drink a beer.) But, with a full bar and a knowledgeable bartender, I underestimated this place. I have had several very well made cocktails and guess what? They didn't cost me $12! For $8 or so, I've had some delicious drinks! It really is a bar that has something for everything. Stopped by Duke's today for lunch. Really like the vibe/location of the place. They have a small menu consisting of simple sandwiches with fresh ingredients. It is SUPER affordable. A regular sandwich with a side of chips will run you just $6. There was only one gal behind the counter who was taking orders and making the food, so it took a little longer than expected. She was very nice so it didn't bother me at all. Definitely give this place a try if you're on the east side. read more

MIXED. I came here by myself and ordered a seitan sandwich and was up all night sick. Honestly I feel like this was my fault though. The sandwich was so dang good, and those chips were so dang greasy!! I was trying to eat like a normal dinner, when honestly it should have probably been hangover food. It was really, really heavy. It was also really, really delicious. The reason I think I overdid it is because I got halfway through the giant sandwich and I was like, you know what? This is good. We're good here. Let's wrap the rest up and enjoy it tomorrow. BUT I KEPT EATING IT OMG. It was just too good. I literally wrapped it up, drove off, and then unwrapped it in the car. Emotionally, I felt like a horrible human being. And then, yes, physically I felt terrible. I overdid it. I brought a friend back a week later for drinks, which were delicious. Duke's is a clean, non-smoking bar with cheap food and drinks who makes a good cocktail. Contrary to the opinions of some other reviews, I believe this is just what east Nashville needs. This is an inexpensive bar that seems to know what they are doing when it comes to making cocktails and are not charging $13 for them. I paid $8 for a solid Negroni. Good start. Duke's is a non-smoking establishment, which is a huge win. I love 3 Crow if the windows are open and really don't care that BTE is a full of smoke, but the non-smokers really need some options and Duke's delivers. The dining area is pretty small and all they serve are deli sandwiches but it's a good deli like you would find at Kroger. They have about 6 options that come with chips but they will go off the menu for you. Guess what!? Also reasonably priced at $6 a meal. This place is a nice change up in 5 points. read more
